What is Resilience and How Do I Improve it? | Kati Morton

  • Resiliency is defined as “the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties or toughness” but when it comes to our psychological health it’s a bit more than that. It’s about our ability to manage any crisis or upset and get back to baseline quickly, meaning that life’s ups and downs don’t throw us off for that long, we have tools and resources and we can bounce back quickly.
I have often used the poker chip analogy to describe resilience, if you don’t know what I’m talking about, I have shared in other videos how we wake up with a certain number of poker chips, and stressful or difficult things cost us some of those chips. Others prefer the spoons analogy, but either way we are talking about resilience.
And I know you are wondering how we know what our resiliency is or how good or bad we are doing with it, and the way to find that out is to notice, or even think back to the last crisis we had and think about how long it took you to get back to feeling like yourself. Was it a quick turn around? Or did we struggle for weeks, months, or even years? If we bounce back easily, we have more resilience, and if we struggle to move past it, we have less. But no matter how much resilience we have we can all benefit from more of it...

The best bridge statement I’ve found is the premise that “if I were such a bad person, I wouldn’t be worrying about becoming better, so I’m actually nice for trying”. It’s an universal truth and it can be quite relieving and motivating!

That part about talking to yourself more like a loved one would, that took me many years to get. When you're used to hearing bad from most others, it's how you begin speaking to yourself.
Of course, there are others who seem to have no issue with this at all. They never think ill of themselves.

I've been journaling off an on for the past year and last night I had what I call a "butterfly moment" as I was writing in my journal. A butterfly moment, to me, is a major a-ha moment that dramatically shifts a person's thought to the core that their perception is forever changed for the better. In that moment, all the stress I had been carrying for months -- just lifted.

When I set goals I alsways get cynical comments from my family and friends like: "Ha, you always make plans that never work out!"
it makes me cringe cause I know it's true and I find myself giving up on almost all of them right away.
I stopped telling people what I'm up to and for some reason they don't like that either.

I started grad school a month ago, and I had my first kind of breakdown over the weekend. I’m in grad school so I can get into medical school. I often feel dumber than my classmates, and not everyone is willing to help each other out.(even going so far as to try to get others to slack off by making it seem like they themselves are partying all the time.) I have to come up with better coping skills, and this video is a good one I can come back to.

    Journaling all the way! ✌🏻✊🏻
I know that since I started therapy, my resilience has gotten stronger. But sometimes I don’t even realize how well I’m doing - a crisis comes up, and I think I’m completely handling it wrong or that I’m not doing good enough. My therapist has reminded me a few times that I’m more resilient than I give myself credit for. It’s nice to have that outside confirmation and reassurance. 💛

All in all, in my program we teach the client to identify their pitfalls and create tools to pull themselves out and prevent falling back in :) I feel like its something we all need.

My resiliency was like non existent. I used to wake up and all but one or two of my chips were instantly gone from all the trauma and mess in my head. The good things didn't lift me up at all and the bad stuff brought me really low for a long time. I wasn't worth investing in or spending time or energy on things that were just for me or to care for me. An awesome counselor, some EMDR (still going) and a lot of work later and i'm getting better. All these are a good reminder, still many that I need to work on thanks :) and I always make sure to watch ads when they pop up! My little way of supporting what you do! Thank you!

I was in an ambulance a few times for mental health reasons. I am 14 and have been through a lot. One of the EMS workers told me how resilient i have been and that i just need some extra help. So i got a tattoo of the word resilience on my whole forearm over my scars to remember how i got through it. So this video really touched me, live you so much could you talk more about anorexia possible?
