Broken Vessel/Lost Kin is easily my favourite fight from the base game. And the music is so intense; sinister but also melancholic. That silent nod of acknowledgement that we get from his spirit is our reward for bringing him peace.
@@namelessdragon330saying "them" sounds a bit off for a singular person especially i am not a native english speaker And the vessels probably wouldn't mind being called anything
@@Oncomishere I didn't say "them", I said "it", as that is the pronoun used in the game itself. And the Vessels may not mind, but I and a lot of other people do. Stop making excuses. You're setting the precedent for yourself here: If you won't use the right pronoun here, when it's easy and not a big deal, you get used to doing that, and then what happens when it's someone you know? When it is a big deal? I know I'm being harsh, and I do apologize. All I'm saying is... It's a good habit to get into, using the right pronouns. Yes, even if it sounds off or weird.
I have never noticed the little White Palace melody before, it's a little nod to something that the vessels were meant to do. I love this theme and is great that you finally made a video on it, THANK YOU SO MUCH
Let's goooo! Broken vessel has such a solid theme, where it's both knightly but also wrong, and sad, in a way, that really fits what's going on in the fight
This is easily my favorite boss of the base game. I'd already felt uncomfortable with how deep I went when I came across it. And then seeing the orange corruption climb into the shell and puppet it around. I was thoroughly uncomfortable and disturbed fighting it
These connections you pick up on are so cool. Musicians for games these days really do a great job of telling the story of the characters/areas in their themes. They're so much more than just melodies.
What always stood out to me about this is the instrumentation, it uses different pianos and different strings than the rest of the OST, they sound old and worn
Broken Vessel was probably the most impactful boss in the game for me, thanks in no small part to its music. The question who are you and what are you doing here lingers over the entire early game and really comes to the forefront when you stumble across broken vessel and see that he’s literally just you. And then on the first listen during the fight it was so obvious that the boss theme was just a soulless resigned version of the main theme that you just have to accept that you two are one in the same. Then it becomes the entry point for other lore questions, like what does it mean that it is a vessel? What does it mean that I’m just an empty container to be filled with some substance? 10/10 moment where the boss design, music, and story all come together to really get the player invested in what is happening.
I really like you pulling up the other songs this song references, helps show off how they are related. Also its actually pretty sad that broken vessel has white palace and sealed vessel references for "deep lore implications". Makes me appreciate the song even more! Coincidentally enough was listening to Hollow Knight sound track when I noticed this in my feed
I’d never really noticed the ties to Sealed Vessel and White Palace before! One of my favorite theories surrounding the Broken Vessel is that it was the Pale King’s original child who attempted a self-sacrifice to seal the Radiance away (before the whole chucking unborn children into an abyss thing), so those references would make a lot of sense for this theory, implying both that the Broken Vessel may have once resided in the White Palace and the similarities between the Broken Vessel and the Sealed Vessel’s failed attempts at sealing the Radiance. It’s only a theory, but I still think it’s at the very least a fun head-canon
The Broken Vessel is one of you siblings, one of thousands. While you managed to survive, this vessel got taken over by the infection and is now forced to fight against you. The leitmotif of the main theme represents the Vessels, wich includes you, as well as the Hollow Knight and all your other siblings. The White palace theme is there, because all the Vessels are the children of the pale king and the white lady, who ruled over Hallownest from the white palace The themes are so soulless in this rendition because the Broken Vessel got taken over by the infection, and everything that it used to be got taken away. Now it's just a mindless husk attacking its own family
3:20 I feel like at this part the melody is is stuck at the beginning of the main theme, perhaps showing that Broken Vessel got stuck soon after escaping the Abyss. It's as if the song couldn't be finished and is just stuck in a loop (8:48)
Broken Vessel is such a tragedy, just like so many others in the game - but every one of them has its own feel to it. Man, I'd love to see Wandersong or Chicory on this channel, too bad I am not on the patreon.
this is one of my favourite boss themes in any game. The strings play unsettling chords in a strange rhythm that we're not used to. Its so satisfying to me I also love the section at 5:22. Reminds me of something even bach would do
This is a very insightful return to a HK theme. I love it when the music tells a story; and "the main theme(character), but empty and dead inside" is exactly what this boss fight is.
The white palace melody is in fact the king's and is present in the theme of all his relatives , white lady (queen) , hornet (princess) , vessels (offsprings) and even in the white defender's ost dunno if you noticed but if sat on the throne right after you got the king soul charm a melody that I call 'Royal hollow knight theme' start
I'll honestly choose this guy over THK every time. It doesn't get the glory or aclaim of its big sibling, yet it managed to fight its way out of the Abyss all the same, mandible and nail. Probably my favorite theme in the game too. Captures both the horror and sadness of the Infection, but still manages to be weirdly militaristic.
But.. what about all the other vessels who also escaped the Abyss? Do *they* not deserve the same just because this one has a boss fight and the other ones are just background elements?
It was so cool to see you break this one down, especially all of the "droning" parts. It's one of my favorites. Never noticed the White Palace and Sealed Vessel connections; they just make the track better. At some point, please do 'Haunted Gods' from the Hollow Knight DLC OST. It plays for Broken Vessel and a small number of other bosses during the boss rush mode
Never noticed how Broken Vessels brings in those elements from the White Palace and Sealed Vessel. Also, next song you do on Hollow Knight I highly suggest to be Pure Vessel
So what you refer to as the Main Theme is the leitmotif for the Vessels. It's used for the player character, the Hollow Knight, the Broken Vessel, the Perfect Vessel, and Birthplace.
When the infection gets to you, you loose yourself and is just an echo who you once were. Repeating the tasks you had before over and over again like a mindless zombie.
I really like the man on the internet broken vessel version because the lyrics also put a meaning behind the song, which is kinda lore accurate. :D (there are some weird stuff, but it's the story of the broken vessels)
he did a video on the best track for the best character in the best area of the game :D its so surprising how much of broken vessel's character he unpacked from just the song, pretty much all of it lines up perfectly with the lil guy. it really inspires someone like me who wants to develop video games and make their soundtracks to pay more attention to how the tracks line up with the character
All vessels are sons of the king and the broken vessels is one of the few that escaped the abyss and that could have take the place of the sealed vessel
Well, since you're literally fighting your own brother who got corrupted by the Radiance just like for Sealed Vessel but this time it doesn't contain the Radiance itself, and also since it's the first infected vessel you see during your playthrough, it has that creepy theme. The White Palace's theme is present in a lot of musics, here it's because the Vessels are directly linked to the Pale King, and the area where you fight Broken Vessel is near the White Palace and the Abyss.
1:40 to be fair, this is a more distressing scene than any before. This isnt a living creature corrupted by the infection. This is(usually) the player's first exposure to the Pale King's attempts of making a vessel and failing. And proof that the radiance can possess anything with a mind to break...in this case, broken literally. It makes seeing the void's "floor" all the more impactful for the attentive.
Oh boy, another Hollw knight theme ! I never noticed how good and tense this music was, and how much it referenced the other themes related to Sealed vessel. This is why i love those videos, allowing me to rediscovered and love even more the themes i already like Btw, this short part, just before it's looping... it made me think a bit of how the music grow wild against Sealed vessel, just before it break the chains. Another reference ? Maybe a "for this broken one it's over, but next time you hear it, it will be against the true one" ?
I really think how you explain and show the musical references and components. I was able to easily understand and follow along to what you were saying even though I am completely musically inept and party tone deaf.
I feel like video games are uniquely positioned to make powerful use of leitmotifs. A well done soundtrack alludes to itself throughout whenever the world lore and situation calls for it. Every theme for every area and boss fight that pulls from the main theme and its variants fit into each other. You know a good soundtrack when it you can find thematic similarities to melodies that all help tell the game world's story entirely through the music. The main theme, the White Palace theme, and the themes of the vessel fights are all part of the same whole to tell that story. Here's hoping you look into Risk of Rain 2 sometime, especially "...con lentitud ponderosa", and would love to see you check out some themes from Lost Ark like Astalgia of Phantasm.
Hi Davi! Been rewatching your content recently, and figure I should give you a big recommendation. Please make a video one the Undertale fangame, Undertale Yellow’s song, A Mother’s Love. It’s so beautiful, sad, and emotional, then gets super hype with a still emotional part, referencing hopes and dreams from Undertale. Also, if you want another song reccomendation, not sure if you already covered it, but the song from Undertale, sharing the same name of Undertale, is great. I really hope you consider these!
4:30 "and all that remains is that mindless, insistent, soulless movement" I love how the music captures EXACTLY what the boss is, Christopher Larkin truly is a great composer also this is my favorite OST in the entire game, so I really appreciate this video, thanks
The thing about the Broken Vessel theme is that it lacks resolution. Both musically and lore-wise. It's as if the failed Vessel still yearns to fulfill its purpose, even if that yearning is nothing more that a vestigial remain of what it onces was. Of what it could have been. That's why Larkin included those incomplete fragments of Sealed Vessel. Both as forshadowing of the real thing that is barely containing the infection... and to portrait one of many failed attemps by the Pale King, a warrior that once had a purpose. But none remains for him. Broken... broken... cast aside... condemned by its father as a failure.
People have mentioned it here already, but broken vessel is indeed just 1:1 the player character, but unfortunately he didnt have quite the same luck to fulfill his purpose
SPOILERS: The reason it is such a simplified version is because it is an infected vessel that is stuck carrying out the last things in its memory before it died as that is what the Radiance does. It reanimates the corpses and makes them carry out their last jobs/purposes in life over and over, the same can be seen in Sealed Vessel how it is too far gone to be a complete vessel (hence the non-resolving main theme) but still carries the memories of what it once was so it still knows what it is (hence why we here the main theme at all; it is a representation of them remembering their past as vessels as the main theme is agreed upon to be the melody of the vessels).
Hey, Vasc, I'm a big fan! Love your Hollow knight music breakdown videos and I gotta say that I am impressed by how you are basically able to get to the heart of the song if that makes any sense. Lore spoilers I never realised how well the song fitted the broken vessel, it's everything the vessel could've been (which is the Hollow Knight, and thus the references in broken vessel's theme to the sealed vessel theme), but hadn't achieved (explaining the distorted and broken mood in the song). It made it out of the Abyss, like three others (you, the vessel in Hornet 1 arena and the Hollow Knight), but didn't make it that far. As to the hints of White Palace theme, the Hollow Knight was raised in it. The birthplace and end of Path of Pain both show that. It's where it learned to fight before being send off to the Black Egg. It all ties up, everything in this song is a reference to something else and yet also made its own thing with lots of lore attached. I feel like a lot of songs and themes in this game have that
Oh nice. I remember that Broken Vessel was one of my favourite fights in Hollow Knight, cool fight, and iirc the first dream version boss that I beat, if not the only one. That victory was very satisfying fight, which is pretty good cause it's not like I like that much Hollow Knight's fights. That's it. ¡Adiós!
I suggest listening to some of the Dead Cells soundtrack. It gas some bsngers man... I recommend Clock Tower and Arboretum since I feel they have a lot of depth
He knows the terms, he uses them occasionally in other videos. He usually likes to dumb things down for people like me, though, who do not know what most of these things mean
The Sealed Vessel part is especially interesting, because if you pay attention, it's as if it's TRYING to complete the main theme of the game, while failing It represents the Vessels still retaining SOME control against the infection, trying to fight back against it, but it always holds them back. In the same way, it is represented in music by the Radiance's theme playing on top, as the main melody attemps to play. It's a fight of the Vessel and the infection, perfectly illustrated by music.
The fact the song gets "repetetive" might want to underline the insane amount of vessels that were created just to be thrown away because they weren't perfect.

One of the lucky vessels that escaped the abyss, but not enough to escape the ancient basin
Still waiting for a video about some MSC from "Grounded"😁

Could you please do a review of “Dark and Endless Dalek Night” from “Doctor Who?” I honestly think that you’ll enjoy it.
I think you mean to say leitmotif or recurring riff. Rather than just reference to use as a term I mean.
He knows the terms, he uses them occasionally in other videos. He usually likes to dumb things down for people like me, though, who do not know what most of these things mean
Hey tey hear Hornet boss fight or Mantis lords boss fight they r so beautiful
Oh, darn it, I'm kinda late...
Well.... 1 hour gang here 😅
Great video as always!
The Sealed Vessel part is especially interesting, because if you pay attention, it's as if it's TRYING to complete the main theme of the game, while failing
It represents the Vessels still retaining SOME control against the infection, trying to fight back against it, but it always holds them back. In the same way, it is represented in music by the Radiance's theme playing on top, as the main melody attemps to play. It's a fight of the Vessel and the infection, perfectly illustrated by music.
The fact the song gets "repetetive" might want to underline the insane amount of vessels that were created just to be thrown away because they weren't perfect.
can you please check out undertale yellow? Its a fangame with music quality on par with the original if not better
