I always loved how the Dirtmouth Theme was both peaceful and a bit melancholy. It really gets across how empty the town is when you first arrive in the game.
Also yeah the more I listen to your analyses the more I realize that Christopher Larkin isn’t just an awesome composer because he can write good music-he’s an awesome composer because he understands how to use music techniques to establish subconscious connections and feelings, which allows him to play on those and develop them later in the game. Honestly genius
the fact that he also does the sound design of the game is almost too much.
You know what amazed me as well ? Greenpath is like Dirtmouth's sister in music, they share the same notes but Greenpath has this playful happiness and life in it
I just wanted to say that the main string instrument here and in most other Hollow Knight soundtracks is a viola, not a violin! It's rare that violas get so much spotlight but as a violist I absolutely love that Christopher Larkin did this :) I want more people to know how beautiful violas sound.
So cool! I didn't know that
There is an emotional depth and weight to a viola's sound that violins simply cannot replicate, even when playing within the same range; I wish more composers took advantage of it. Most, when needing that extra depth, seem to skip them over and just write for cello instead.
Ah! I was kind of thinking cello, but that didn't seem right. My mom was an excellent violinist (classically trained from the time she was five years old, and highly-skilled). She would often play the low tones in that same manner, but this music didn't seem to QUITE be right for the violin, but it wasn't dawning on me why. The viola would definitely be the instrument in question. Mom did play that, as well, and once in a while she'd play cello. Our household was always full of stringed music, plus a lot of other music, since Mom and we four kids all played several instruments growing up, as well. Personally, the only stringed instrument I have played is guitar, but I also play piano, accordion, trumpet/cornet, and various other wind instruments (except I can't play flute...it gives me a headache). Thanks for that info, and for the memories! 😀
@@dylancraven3979 I agree! Every instrument has its specialty, and I think violas fit so well in warm, hearty, or melancholic roles. I wish they had more presence in soundtracks because HK is a great example of how well-placed violas can boost the music!
@@lindawingfield6522 Glad to help! Your household sounds like it was and still is lovely :)
Christopher Larkin is probably the best composer of video game music. He's just genius.. Imagine how much he has improved himself in the past 5 years. Can't wait for silksong soundtrack
Hell yeah, new Hollow Knight video.
Dirtmouth is so surprising to me because it always fits no matter the moment in the game. In the beginning it hits you with how desolate it is, mirroring the condition you find the town. But as Dirtmouth gets more crowded and warm, you start to notice how homely, cozy and familiar it is.
I still remember how I felt when I came back after a long battle to hear the ost again, it has the same effect as coming back to Firelink shrine in DS1 you immediately feel comfortated with a feeling of peace, but at the same time it still fits to the lonely and sad atmoesphere of the game
I CANNOT wait to hear more of Christopher Larkin's work on Silksong
Great video, I always love seeing people enjoy the Hollow Knight Soundtrack. This piece in particular moves me every time, it was only after listening to the OST on its own did I realize why it felt so much like coming home, even if that home is all but empty.
It should be noted that the solo part is on the viola, not the violin. The viola was central to this game's soundtrack. Outside of vocals, the viola was the only instrument recorded in studio, the rest were synthesized. And it's not just being pedantic. Pixel Partitas has a short Hollow Knight concert here on UA-cam, performing selections from the OST, and they chose a violin for many of the pieces. There is a distinct shift in tonal quality between the two. The best way I can describe it is the difference between mournful and plaintive. The viola is grounded and deep; it sounds the way your chest tightens when you are experiencing grief, a welling up of repressed emotion. The violin is brighter and more forward; it is a cry of pain, not of grief built over many years and many leagues, but felt keenly in the moment. With the violin, we are not transported back in time to what once was, remembering a society long gone, but instead are caught in the moment, seeing everything fall around us, and asking in vain why it all has to go.
interesting.
I remember when I just beat the game, when I've done and achieved everything I could or when I just miss this game, I sit in dirtmouth and just listn to the theme, to zote's speech and to salubra's blessing
It feels so good after all that work I've done, after all that effort I've put in this game and afterr all of that game rewarded me with. It feels so good and relaxing. I love this game wholeheartedly
There's a rap song named "mauvais payeur" by the Belgian rapper La Fève where he uses a sample of the Dirtmouth theme and it's REALLY good. If you enjoy rap I highly suggest to try listening to it 😁
@1DaviVasc0 yeah if you want I would like to
Hollow Knight is a masterpiece of Metroidvania games. Still hope for Silksong
Not hope, wait
One of the best moments in the entire game: you land, walk through silence, and then this music starts as you first encounter the edges of civilization.
This man never misses.
Christopher Larkin is also so great at mixing his music, no note feels too loud nor too quite, the bass is not muddied and clear to listen to, I can't say this from a lot of music but his feels perfect and just hits the spot.
The White Palace track from this game is my favorite ambient theme
Thank you, Davi! I really do like this track VERY much. Partly, I think it's because I usually take myself back there when I've blown it somewhere else in the game, and I'm close enough to just head upwards in the "tube," to find that bit of peace and comfort up there in Dirtmouth, after messing up, somewhere else (sigh). I also like the way the main theme wends its way through it, as it reminds me of the whole premise of why I'm there in the first place.
I've started watching your playthrough of the game, twice, now, and haven't gotten really far, and with all of the grandkids around (who go in and out of this part of the house pretty constantly), I keep getting interrupted. I think I'm going to start over on that series, and take copious notes...not just watch.
Again...I'm glad this track won, this time. Thanks! 😀
Once Silksong comes out our minds will be blown. It’s either going to be absolutely huge or insanely polished.
It’ll be both
If silksong comes out
This is my favourite theme from Hollow Knight.
i really love the accordion layer of this theme that plays only when specific conditions are met. as well as the version in the piano collections
Hollow Knight is one of my top 5 video game OST's for sure, Christopher Larkin knows how to subconsciously pluck at your heartstrings.
Do you think you would ever break down the themes in [BIG SHOT] from Deltarune? I think you would have a field day dissecting the co-opted themes from other songs
Great video as always! When I first listened to this track, I had no idea that it would be the most memorable music from the OST. I love the loop that gradually builds up as if recalling past brilliance and then goes back to the forlorn atmosphere.
"Listening to the music in Hollow Knight is like wandering through a hauntingly beautiful dreamscape. It perfectly captures the essence of adventure, mystery, and melancholy that defines this incredible game. Every track feels like a journey in itself, making me feel both exhilarated and nostalgic. Truly a masterpiece in video game music!"
when you are met with desolation and melancholy, but find a bit of home in it - that is Dirthmouth
Wow i cant believe its already been a year since the last hollow knight track until now
More Hollow Knight LET’S GOOOOOO, love dirtmouth it’s so quiet and sad at the same Time, it inspire nostalgia
Oh, Hollow Knight. Good game, it was the game that makes me play more good games. I didn't enjoy that much, include the music, but very good as I said. Listening to the video, the track reminded me of a track in Blasphemous 2, it's also from a city, although the song isn't similar to Dirtmouth, but I just noticed that it also start with a piano and then strings, not a lonely violin though. Cool. Yeah, good music and video. That's it. ¡Adiós Davi!
Dirtmouth was my main inspiration for not just one, but several tracks that I wrote for Revita. It's hauntingly beautiful while at the same time evoking a feeling of melancholy. What also helps is that he's not just including the ninth, he's focusing a lot of his melodies HARD on it, which just strengthens this feeling of melancholy :D
yayy didn't think you'd do another Hollow Knight one!
Hello! Good analysis as always.
Look at Midra’s theme from Elden Ring DLC. It’s amazing
Yay, i always love the hollow knight reactions!
This video represents Dirtmouth's music very well with the same gameplay, well done Davi, i miss the Hollow Knight live shows 8,)
I'm learning to play this piece on the piano now, so beautiful and touching
You should listen to some Lies of P music. I was absolutely blown away by how amazingly deep they all are, and I’d love to see your interpretation of them!
I’ll specifically recommend Why, Fascination (I like the Instrumental version), Stage of Grief/Shattered Memories (different stages from the King of Puppets boss fight), and Arm of God.
Yessssss. I’d love to see stage of grief
Love this song, thanks for the perspective! When you mentioned the violin being lonely, it made me think of how the piano is just an echo of the violin, which makes it have a stronger feeling of solitude.
The latter part of this music that's more "at home" and peaceful, and the fact that the feeling comes later, makes sense thematically, too. When you 1st enter, you feel lonely but get a welcome with Elderbug, then you pretty much move on (maybe after seeing some empty houses). After finding some town residents, you're more likey to spend more than a couple minutes there, now that you have a friendly community of bugs. I never thought of that before now...
One big reason I'm looking forward to Silksong is to witness the OST!
Back with some hollow knight I love it. Can't wait till you get to cover silk song in the meantime keep up the good work. We love Christopher Larkin lads.
Dirtmouth has always been my favourite hollow knight traxk
I actually sometimes forget about the violin part until I start listening to the song again because I'm used to getting out of Dirtmouth before it starts
I missed your Hollow Knight videos!
If I remember correctly, the entire melody to this piece are fragments of the main theme (the Knight’s theme) set to a different and more spacious rhythm. I love how instead of setting it on the 1, he instead sets that melody on the 2 and has it keep resolving to that starting note. A beautiful and calm discordance that just stays around and can’t be escaped from. I know I say this about a lot of tracks, but this one is really up there as one of my favorites from this game. So simple, so easy to listen to, and has a lot going on under the surface.
Bro?! Those last notes on the piano are the same as the last notes from "Pure vessel"
LETSGOOOOOO DIRTMOUTH FTW
You still haven't covered my favorite Nightmare King Grimm :D It hits much harder than the Grimm theme
"This is gonna be nostalgic"
Yep, that how i know a game is really awesome, when you feel that even if you discovered recently. For me, i had that feeling with Hollow Knight, and Chrono Trigger
I just discovered your channel thanks to a Hollow knight music. What I love is your simple way of explanation for some parts of the music allowing non musicians to notice and understand the beauty of a whole complex world built up by a composer. I look forward to playing more videos. One of my favourite game soundtracks I discovered recently is THE PLANET OF LANA. If you ever need a new suggestion listen to it. Greetings from the Czech Republic. 😉
Awesome work thx for video
I just started my hollow knight playthrough, perfect timing xD
Good luck! Don't lose heart, the game is amazing if you're able to give it time 👍
@1DaviVasc0 You are NOT Davi Vasc dude 😂
As always, great analysis of the theme. I think you should listen to Bayle's theme from shadow of the erdtree next, an absolutely amazing yet often overlooked theme in the dlc, and keep up the good work!
I remember when I first played this game and got to this area, I knew I had to get the soundtrack for this game
Gosh this music has no right to be this good!
I love the dirtmouth theme and how it appears on random tracks of the game
A combination of home but at the same time of despair, urgency and the feeling of being forgotten
I never understood why it's called dirtmouth though is it because the underground "shallows" people like a mouth would. The old guy keeps saying how the underground was closed off or how he doesn't understand why people go down there or how dirtmouth used to be a random village no one would visit.
You know that both Sealed Vessel and False Knight’s theme have the Main theme in them too?
Dang, 30 seconds ago for me!
Hey Davi, I suggested this in your Ultrakill livestream, but can you do a video on Tenebre Rosso Snague from Ultrakill? I would really love to see that, and I know you will find it very unique.
Hollow Knight OST is really good....
It's really hard to actively pick apart music you enjoy. You try to focus, but end up grooving to it.
yeeeeeeeeeeee hollow knight
I would say Candy Element also can provide great sustenance but then I think that if it mostly involves sugars and sucrose (going by candy), it maybe wouldn't be the most healthy sustenance
I recommend any track from the game "Gris". It is a game driven by its music, so I feel like you would like it a lot!
E também, todas as músicas conectam de alguma forma com a melodia de "enter hallownest", que não foi adicionada ao jogo oficial mas são tocadas as mesmas notas. Probably you said that in the video, I don't know.
SILKSONG FINALLY GIVEN RELEASE DATE!!!!
you cannot be serious?
me when I purposefully spread misinformation on the internet
You should listen to the "Still Alive" from Portal 1, I belive it would be pretty funny to watch you trying to understand the lyrics!
Everytime i found crazy game music i just check what this guy has to say about it, and still no Midra
Blasphemous 2 track soon please
And Hollow Knight ost is fantastic yea
Dirtmouth and Crossroads are the beginning areas of the game
They are my favourite, because these like many other zones in games make me feel homely
How did Elder bug remain unharmed during the events of Hollow Knight? Is he immune to the infection? Was it because he never left dirtmouth? Is dirtmouth a safe haven?
Essa música é muito boa véi, que jogo sensacional!
Would you be willing to go over the Silksong tracks we have so far, even though the game isn't out yet?
Second language people trying to explain their passion in English but not having the vocabulary for it is my new favourite genre of human interaction
Love it
I wanted to see you reacting to a Grounded song
Do more HK soundtracks
I'm waiting for city of tears review,
my all time favourite soundtrack
I'm not sure if the devs know, given how much noise noise noise Dirtmouth gets filled with...
❤ awesome
Hey there! 😀
Please tell me others can hear the Arkham asylum chime at around 4:25
I will say, you should try breaking down a song from a game called ULTRAKILL, the one I recommend is "The World Looks Red"
Please do Bayle the dread ost from shadow of the erdtree
Too bad MY music takes over when I'm summoned!
nice
This always reminds me of 0x10c by C418.
Hey, I don't know if you take viewers requests but if you do, could you do world 18's boss from Guardian Tales? It's one of, if not my favorite ost ever.
I don't think it has an official name but you should find it if you search "Guardian Tales vs Kaden".
And if you don't think about making a video from it, could you just tell me your thoughts about it here?
Can u check any track of titan souls?
Coming back to Hollow Knight?
Pure Vessel?
Video 3 of asking Davi to listen to some Omori musics. It's a masterpiece.
You should look up some of the streams where people ask him to listen to stuff. pretty sure he has at least heard some Omori stuff on there, though he certainly hasn't analysed them in depth.
@@Banazir-uz9zt Maybe. But I'd really like to see some In depth analysis anyway.
@1DaviVasc0 BAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
YOU'RE SO OBVIOUSLY A SCAMMER LOL. I MEAN SERIOUSLY. DID YOU THINK THAT'D WORK? I DON'T USUALLY CAP LOCK LIKE THAT BUT IT'S JUST TOO FUNNY 🤣😂🤣.
Day 1 of asking you to cover Paper lily chapter 1 ost.
hey man, can you pleased react to Midra, Lord of the Frenzy Flame OST. it is my favourite OST From Elden Ring: Shadow Of the Erdtree.
Здравствуйте. Благодарю за данный разбор. Можите ли вы разобрать музыку из игры "Asteris and Obelix XXL", "The Roman Empire"? Желаю вам удачи и до свидания.
not a big deal but u keep saying violin and im pretty sure its a viola, its ok im not a strings expert either and honestly i cld b wrong
Recommending "Nine Sols" from, well, Nine Sols, also metroidvania that came this year, and (I know that's blasphemy) - I think the game is BETTER than Hollow Knight.
The credit song? Yeah this thing hits so hard
@@quelquun2744 precisely that.
Wash your mouth.
@1DaviVasc0 you forgot to give me your telegram.
skamtebord
Insaitable - ffxiv 😱. Highly recommend but ost loop is on the shorter side.
i heavily recommend "…con lentitud poderosa" from risk of rain 2
Day 2 of asking you to cover Paper lily chapter 1 ost.
