Why I use 5 brands of Oil Pastels

  • This a quick demonstration on why I use multiple brands (5 currently) of oil pastels for my work. Not all brands are the same and in order for me to get layers to sit on top of an underneath layer without mixing in, I need to use softer oil pastels like sennelier and neopastel on top of harder oil pastels like craypas expressionist and van goghs.
    This layering technique is how I'm able to get the look, and depth of my work.
    In this video I start off with cray pas expressionist to create that first layer. Then I show how each oil pastel brand performs and looks on top of that first layer. Thanks for watching!

    Oh! One thing I forgot to mention. If you want to get better layering results from the harder pastels, warm them up in your hand or with a hair dryer. They have more wax content in their binder and when they get warm they will be easier to layer and you can get a great semi-translucent painterly wash style effects since the pigment load is much lower comparatively to binder.

      Great tip. Thinking about what you're saying, I was thinking about bringing my craypas with me on plein air and doing first layers with those. I think they will warm up nicely in the sun.

    With the recent shock of IAPS revealing the poor performance in lightfastness of many soft pastels; what do we know about lightfastness in oil pastels? Have you performed your own lightfast tests? I believe Sennelier and Caran D'ache have ratings on each stick.

    • @raizes
      @raizes  2 роки тому +4

      Hello! You know, I’ve never done my own test with oil pastels. It’s honestly something I haven’t been concerned with. But it would be good video to make and easy to do. I could do test of the brands I have. A friend of mine in Russia did test of the mungyos and there was fading. I don’t remember the details though. Thanks for the question and I’ll do a test and make a video on it.

    I was looking for a harder oil pastel to create fine lines in my abstract paintings. Thankful that you showed me the cray-pas are harder and hopefully enable me to make the finer line marks I'm looking for. I'm not layering much, actually just staining the paper with oil pastel and blending out to the white of the page :-) Thank you.

  • @l.beukema8570

    Thank you for showing the difference. I do like to add that the outcome also depends on the paper. I myself like to work on sanded paper (Canson mi teint Touch). I have Mungyo, van Gogh and some Sennelier, but with the sanded paper layering is much easier, even with the harder and less opaque pastels. The sennelier pastels are often too soft for how I like to work.

    • @raizes
      @raizes  Рік тому +1

      Thank you! and I do agree, the sanded surface is a dream surface for Oil pastels. I like it a lot. They do however grind up my softer OP's like my neopastels and Sennelier and I end up replacing sticks far more often.

    Have you tried Crypas Specialist? Specialist is supposed to be artist grade but some disagree and are of the opinion that the pigmentation are similar. I use Specialist more because they came in a nice case which is handy for plein air work and I prefer a square shape because they don't roll about in the field and square is better for detail. I would appreciate your opinion though on why you prefer one over the other. Oh and the other brands that I use are Holbein and Sennellier. Thanks.

    • @raizes
      @raizes  Рік тому +3

      I haven't tried the specialist, but have heard good things about them. I like the idea of them being square shape. I will remove papers from my cray pas expressionist and mungyos, van Gogh's and over time they develop nice edges and sharper points. So easy to get thin lines
      Most of my money goes into the neopastels and sennelier, simply because they are the softest and give me strong color. Also heard the Holbeins' are soft too, but haven't tried those. Perhaps one day.
      It really comes down to money and what I'm used to work with.. I been working with oil pastels exclusively since 2010 and just very familiar with what sennelier, neopastels, mungyos, van goghs and the cray pas expressionist.

    Very useful ! I have Mungyos and Senneliers and some Caran d'Aches... I'm wondering if it would be better to choose Van Goghs instead of Mungyo because they have pigment information and lightfastness on them (and you can buy them open stock)... What do you think?

    • @raizes
      @raizes  7 місяців тому +1

      I think so. I've gone to Van Goghs over Mungyos simply because I can buy the van goghs open stock. I do miss some of the colors that mungyo have, but the ability to replace individual sticks outweighs that. And also, neopastels have a great line of color choices. You can do a lot of the first layers with van goghs and then layer the softer neopastels, or senneliers on top. That's how I work majority of the time.

I love the Mungyos to but as they have no lightfast rating I am uncertain about using them in works to sell. I am trying to decide on the best firm oil pastel to use for the under painting or first layers and considering the Cray Pas lead me to your video. Because my first layers may still be exposed in some areas of the painting I'm worrying about lightfastness/artist quality. Am I worrying needlessly?

      Thank you! I think the craypas expressionist are great for getting the first layers. Very affordable and they hold up great. Very easy to get softer brands to stack on top as well. Hi Jackie! To be honest, they are OK. Not great and not nearly as nice to use as the Sennelier brand. I found that a lot of the sticks were greasy and I don't really like that feel in my hands.Makes it difficult to layer on top. So I won't be mixing them in with my other OP's. I think if and when I use them again, I will use them alone or with harder OP like craypas or van goghs. I might try them for plein air and see how they layer on top of my neopastels.
      The good thing about them is vibrant, strong colors and the price. They are inexpensive.
