The Sennelier have a true transparent Ultramarine... If a transparent pigment is opaque, the brand added something to the stick to make it opaque.

What a fantastic comparison video!! Such invaluable information for me who's looking to buy a set of the best quality on a budget!
Thank you for being so thorough!

Diane what a good job. It's so hard to get good info on oil pastels, especially when your new to the medium. I've heard the Mugyo Gallery soft oil pastels are a good bottom layer with Sennelier for top/ finishing touches. I have the Paul Reubens 48 and I love them but I'm just using them in my sketchbook. I'm still trying to get that painterly look. That's one reason I love your channel. Thanks again for your hard work it's appreciated.

The Mungyo and HAIYA both seem to have most or all the colors sort of white based, which sometimes is annoying. See how clear and luminous the sennelier blue is while the others are cloudy. I believe some sennelier colors are supposed to be more transparent as well. That’s the only downside for me with HAIYA so far.

Now I just need to see mungyo and HAIYA vs NeoPastel 😩

As for today.... ONLY FOUR MONTHS LATER.... The 48 set of Haiya is 43.99. Which is why I decided, NOT to buy them, cause I remember the original price and now because of the hype, they are taking advantage of the consumers and I think that is quite unfair, specially when the different in price is HUGE!

I bought a set of haiya yesterday for just over $20cad for the big set. The price varies dramatically depending on the store, so I doubt that the brand is to blame.
My second set and I love them. Great intro to oil pastels, if a bit soft. I have to use a palette knife for details.

Perhaps test all fixative types on oil pastels?

Thanks for the video. I love oil pastels. The neocolor 2 are wax crayons and not oil pastels. The neopastels by Caran D’ache are oil pastels.

I don’t think the Paul Ruben’s set you used was the macaroon one though, I believe the macaroons are all pale pastel colors

Are not Mungyo Gallery and Master's Touch the same thing (both made in South Korea), with different packaging?

Test the new Paul Rubens "HaiYa" set? Also, someday rank order all tested Oil Pastels by hardest to softest ... then cheapest to most expensive ... least lightfast to most lightfast. That would be useful and interesting.

Sorry, you already covered some of these suggestions. I commented too soon. Sorry!

Are those particular Paul Rubens discontinued?
The only ones I can find are the new version... the Haiya, which are a Sennelier dupe. While looking for the Haiya, I noticed the ones you are showing there werent available. Only the white box, but other than that, I didnt see them. And I remember seeing them at Amazon as soon as I started writing Paul R.... they came out as a suggestion..... sooooo, could it be possible they have been discontinued and replaced by the Haiya?

I was wondering the same thing. I can’t find them anywhere.

@@dianedobsonbartonart I believe that the Paul Rubens Haiya brand have taken the place of the more problematic Paul Rubens regular brand.

    "Goetz" is pronounced, "Getz". FYI.
