  • I've tried many brands of oil pastels in the last few months, and while I like most of them for different reasons, there are two specifically that I really enjoy using. I just couldn't decide which one I liked best, so I put them to the test, side by side.
This is a showdown between the Caran d'Ache Neopastel oil pastels and the Holbein oil pastels. May the best pastel win!

Really great tip about keeping the glassine in the exact same place and not moving it around. I enjoy oil pastels, but I hardly use them because I love my watercolors more. I love my Neocolor IIs, so I suspect I would like their regular oil pastels as well. Thanks, Sandrine; this was a fun video to watch!

Thank you Miranda. I know you like to have fun with your watercolors, and you always do a beautiful job with them. I've actually been wanting to play with mine more lately.

I haven't tried the Neopastels yet but I have the 40-set of Holbein and I find them absolutely fantastic. Wrapping them up with sticky notes takes care of the mess, but I readily admit that considering their steep price point, the company should market them with a wrapper. Definitely do your research for open stock merchants before buying sets. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for doing this video 😊 Very informative. I’ve binged videos about oil pastels lately and this was very helpful to see. Also nice that you took some time explaining how you use the colored pencils in the end.
Now that it’s been a years, what are your thoughts on these two brands and oil pastels in general? 😊 Anything you’ve learned that you’d like to add to this video?

Thank you very much for the video, excellent 😃🌻🌼🏵.I have a question, and it is about the shadow or brown colors, in my experience I have noticed that the shadow and brown tones of Neopasteles are very opaque, lifeless, I think they lack more pigmentation, more intensity. On the other hand, Sennelier has very bright and intense brown and earthy colors and I like that.
I ask you if Holbein's umber and brown colors are as intense as Sennelier's. In fact, I'm thinking about buying some shadows and browns from the Holbein brand to add to my palette. I would greatly appreciate your advice. Thank you

I agree completely. Both brands are excellent quality. But Holbein are just too messy for my taste. I wish Neopastels wrappers were a bit easier to peel , but I prefer having wrappers. Neopastel white is superior to Holbein. Thank you fir your comparison.

Yes, I think the Neopastels are the best all around. And they are the most versatile in my opinion.

Ironically, I always unwrap my oil pastels. I like using the side of the stick.

    OMG awesome picture.
How did you like the paper compared to some others you've used with oil pastels.
Still in beginning stages of working with oil pastels but love them so far.
In my life, I've had to go thru several courses of EDTA for heavy metal issues. It's left me leary of handling any type of pastels with my bare hands. I have used rubber gloves. I've also picked up some Windsor and Newton Artguard. Are you familiar with it? If so, do you think it could affect the colors?
THANK YOU SO MUCH for doing the comparison.
    Love your videos.

I really liked the Stonhenge oil paper. It's thick, and frankly I didn't even pay attention to it while drawing, which is a good thing. It means it worked well with the medium. In my opinion, any paper on the thicker side works well. I personally like using paper that has a bit of a texture, but not too much, so that I can add more layers. For me, any mixed media paper works. But really, oil pastel can be used on any surface.
I'm sorry to hear about your heavy metal issues. That's serious stuff! I've never heard of the W&N Artguard. Is it any good? I doubt it would affect the colors, but I'm gonna look it up more, it sounds interesting.
      Have fun with your pastels.

Wow, the Artguard sounds like a great product. The reviews are very good and it seems to work well protecting artists' hands. Great find, thank you for sharing.

I bought 3 Holbein and that issue with them not been wrapped is so annoying! I wrapped them with washi tape but I won't be buying them again. 👎
