Yeah. This one really hits because I was a young adult then, so the cast always were just kids to me. My childhood stuff like og Star Wars feels ancient even though it’s special to me. Harry Potter feels like yesterday.
Controversially, this is both my favourite book _and_ movie in the series. I think considering it was made to be a single movie instead of 2, it was condensed down quite well. I think the choice to simplify the Barty Crouch Jr. stuff was the right call, and getting rid of relatively superfluous details to the mystery was the right call. If the book was made into 2 movies, then of course the full mystery in the book should have been adapted. But as a single film, the right call was made. I also think it made sense for the tasks and Yule Ball to be the main focus, as they are the big set pieces. The maze being changed also makes sense to me, as a lot of the things Harry has to counter wouldn't translate well (the Sphinx wouldn't work in the movie, it's a pace-breaker).
You should make more Harry Potter videos. I really love Your star wars videos and i grew up with both star wars and Harry Potter. I really love the way you’re analyzing movies
Great video!!! You have often mentioned you wanting to add something new to the conversation, and you did so brilliantly here (especially with your talk of why certain changes hindered the movie). Would love to see some more of the Harry Potter series!! Good job with this one!!
Great video. Really enjoying your deep dive into the HP films. I enjoy both the film and book and appreciate how the movie condensed the plot. Plus every time I watch Voldemort's return, I get chills
This movie will always have a special place in my heart cuz it was the first PG-13 movie i ever saw in theaters by myself. In the past, I always had an adult to come along with me to see a PG-13 movie in theaters cuz they were VERY strict about the rating system of movies. I know it's not AT ALL faithful to the original book, the movie always had a special place in my heart, and I always found good things about the movie.
26:02 isnt the age rule apart from the globet rules? Dumbledore is the one that makes the ring around the goblet so minors cant put their names on the goblet
I think you're right, but also, the first rule is that (one person from each school is chosen.) And barty crouch Jr. Registered harry for a different school the "try" was never apart of the rules
I completely agree with Dumbledore new portrayal of being dramatic and very serious, I think it brings a new dead serious tone to a new chapter in the series, where we do have our first on-screen death so it compliments it setting us up for the rest of the series where it legit gets darker each book with hateful taunting of the characters and their ignorance of the future, during all of Phoenix you can just feel how much is being kept away from them for no real good reason to keep so much backstory away from the readers
As someone who is largely scriptable of the Harry Potter films as adaptations, I think that Order of the Phoenix and Half Blood Prince have a much bigger problem with leaving out key events and spending more time on trivial events. Goblet of Fire knew how to focus on the parts of the book that were consequential to the story; while I still take issues with some of the changes, it’s one of the better movies in my opinion.
With Newell, I think his problem isn’t in his talent, it’s in his attitude. He consistently seemed to have a “if I’m saying it, it’s correct, and no one else can be right, but me, ever, not even the creator, because I’m the best there is”. That really hindered a lot of things.
I absolutely loved the Goblet of Fire when I first saw the movie. I listened to the audiobook a few years later and kept thinking, 'I don't remember that.' I liked the book much more than the movie and the movie dropped lower on my movie ranking.
I like all the Harry Potter movies as I grew up watching them. Now that I am older and getting more familiar with the books, my impression on the films has changed, though not by much. I have heard from a UA-camr named MovieFlame that the Goblet of Fire is his third favorite book in the Harry Potter series, and while he still enjoys the movie adaptation, he still doesn’t enjoy it as much as he enjoys the others and I can see why. A lot of the changes that Mike Newell made are very jarring such as making Dumbledore yell at Harry about him putting his name in the Goblet of Fire rather than calmly asking like he did in the book, the first task where the dragon chases Harry outside of the arena, and so on. But, it is still a fun movie to watch, just not one I would see myself watching more than the other movies.
Put me down in the "I love it" camp. I kind of agreed with most of the changes, given the size of the book, and I didn't mind streamlining the mystery. The key thing was that the important stuff got their due. The tasks, the Ball, Voldemort's reutrn, and the general "teenage-ness" of the kids at this point in time at school were well done, imo. Truth be told, it's the last HP movie I truly enjoyed before David Yates took over for the rest.
It was my favourite film, until I read the books and it then fell to 7th. My favourite books are HBP then GoF and in the films they fall to 8th and 7th. In the new series they'll be the best series
The goblet of fire is probably the most iconic harry potter story to me, however when it comes to the movies I think both films before and after are much better
The book it’s based on was pretty much written like an expanded blockbuster film got thrown into a blender with a shonen anime tournament. There is no excuse for this movie not being better at just being *that* than it is. The source material pretty much already did the main work for them.
Bit of a hot take here but this is one of my least favorite harry potter movies. I don't outright hate it, I just don't like it as much anymore. The final act with the resurrection of Voldemort is awesome though. Ralph Fiennes is perfectly cast as evil snake man wizard guy lol
I sit myself down to have a shit, I open UA-cam to check if any new videos are out, I look at the title of this video and sit in horror as I read it. No, it can't be. That's not true I say as I suddenly feel myself age.
I'm much more forgiving to this film now, but oh did I hated it. The ending of the book was one of the saddest, but also most important part in the franchise. It basically start the divide between Harry and everyone else. It's the start of his coming of age for real.
it was always my favourite HP movie, but idk to what extent the fact that all the boys have longer hair played a role in that xD looking forward to the avatar video! please don't be too mean xD
13:09 maybe it’s jealousy because he was foreshadowed by his brothers, Hermione and Harry, his brothers achieved a lot creee wise, Hermione is book smart and Harry is famous because Voldemort failed to kill him.
Yeah I was just a kid I thought it was pretty weak but the end was legit and Daniel's acting was fantastic PLUS it WAS the movie we finally saw a duel to the death and that blew my mind we never saw it before that, also Pettigrew was a fantastical convincing actor
I just wanna say that of all the characters that "try to play crazy" Barty Crouch JR is the best I've ever seen I totally fucking buy that he is a gifted level young spoiled wizard that went dark and is psychotic from who knows what with even a snake tick to him with his tongue I absolutely buy it he looks and feels like a truly crazy person I'd expect from dark siders that are smart
Regardless of how you feel about the movie, I think everyone can probably agree it wasn’t a great idea to hire a director who had openly admitted he’d never read any of the books, let alone the one he was tasked with adapting.
Meh. A grown ass adult having not read the children’s books that all the kids were raving about? That’s not terribly unusual. Now if he didn’t go and read them once he’d taken the job, that would be a problem.
goblet of fire was my favourite movie..... until I read the book.. which became my favourite book. now goblet of fire is my 2nd least favourite movie next to half-blood prince. im not saying they are bad movies I love each and everyone of the movies... they are just a little bad when it comes to the adaptation..

So GoF is a total disappointment. Especially because the Wronski Feint should have been in The Quidditch World Cup & The First Task. Harry mastering Krum's own move to outscore him was such a good way to show why Krum was enamored with Hermione she brought out the best potential in everyone. And he wanted some of that. Ron, arc falls flat when it's just pretty smart girl that reads. And not damn she helped this amateur do what even I couldn't think to do.

20 years? Excuse me wtf
When you realise some of the Harry-aged kids are now almost 40
We are grown adults wtf
For what it's worth, always remember the main trio is roughly our age.

He prolly just meant that someone escaping Azkaban was an important part of the last film and now it's not even mentioned but idk
Ah yes, the famous 'Did you put your name in the Goblet of Fire?' One of Harry Potter's most infamous moments that was memed like crazy.
