It is kinda unfortunate that in order to properly criticize someone in a minority group (for reasons other than just plain bigotry, don't be a bigot obviously) they have to piss off their own minority group first. Like, I get why people would be hesitant to criticize such people, but overcorrection can be just as jarring. I remember this being the case with James Somerton, there's a reason he lost his career after a bisexual man called him out. It kinda gave the OK of "oh, I can hate this man, and not be seen as homophobic!"

She strongly dislikes Asians, blacks, and Muslims. As you read her tweets they get worse and worse. It's incredibly sad and nasty.

Genuinely informing, the issue(s) with E P is that as mexicans we
1.- Spoke of how Gascón was not a good fit for the role because when she worked in Mexico pre transition she was AWFUL with everyone because she felt superior just for being a Spaniard (which ultimately led to her departure cause no one wanted to work with her)
2.- We outspokenly said that the film was really offensive because it ridicules the country (director didn’t film here because he didn’t find stereotypical places lol) AND glorifies the narcos by saying if they are regretful enough then all sins erased and you can become a saint😋 (like WTF there are states here ‘kidnapped’ BECAUSE of narco) and nobody listened.
3.- Trans community all across the world didn’t considered Gascón a good representation because the role took many steps back in to what the trans movement is.
4.- Imagine a director that doesn’t speak your language or respects it because he thinks it’s synonym of underdevelopment and poorness, doesn’t research a THING, doesn’t even cast natives and glorifies the reason of violence being nominated for an ACADEMY AWARD.
Ultimately it’s sad that no one listened the comments of Mexico towards the film, cast and director and it took (what in Mexico we already knew about) Gascón racist behavior to explode for everyone to even see an issue :/

I think I’m Still Here picking up so much traction everywhere the last couple weeks threw Netflix into a spin. I’m Still Here had a genuine chance of toppling Emilia Perez in International Feature Film which was considered a lock, and a defeat in International Feature Film would mean most certainly a defeat in Best Picture.
You can see that a lot of crap was being thrown at every other film except Emilia Perez at the beginning of the season (its worth noticing the campaign manager for Netflix worked for Miramax for years), up until Gascón decided to attack I’m Still Here out of nowhere. What followed up is honestly she got the whole country of Brazil mad, and as that tweet says: the easiest way to end your career is to piss off brazilians.

It makes me sad that no one cared abt what Mexicans had to say abt this movie. THEY had their culture being represented there and THEY expressed their discomfort, and yet no one gave a crap. It also pisses me off that us Brazilians tried our best in general to never talk crap about the cast, only the movie and sometimes the director, for the same reasons Mexicans did. And then she turned on us, accusing us of hate speech when that's what SHE did in her accounts. It felt like a betrayal to me tbh, especially after Fernanda was so nice about the whole thing and tried to uplift her many times.

Here’s the thing, controversies or not, Emilia Pérez never should’ve come close to the oscars or any awards season for that matter. Maybe except Zoe Saldaña as she was the best part of the movie. But aside from her, every other nomination this movie got was not worthy, that includes Karla Sofia Gascón. It has a poor script, a very problematic message, terrible songs, I mean really, can you take that song about transitioning seriously? And from what people who speak Spanish have said, is offensive to their culture. And now with all the controversies about this movie coming out with the director of the film basically insulting Spanish people saying they are poor, and now with Karla Sofia Gascón being revealed to be an abject racist and terrible person who happens to be a trans actress, it only makes this situation even worse.

As a gay Mexican man who loves cinema, I feel the need to say that Emilia Perez depicts Mexicans in a poor way. The director (Jacques Audiard) didn't bother to learn about Mexican culture and even said spanish is a language for the poor. And you all have to know that, here in Mexico, Karla Sofía Gascón is not disliked for being trans, she is disliked for being racist and a hypocrite. Here in Mexico we already knew how she was because of a movie called Nosotros Los Nobles, and that's it. Here (before transitioning) she was known as a mediocre Spanish actor who talked trash about Mexicans (ironic and ungrateful since she developed her career in Mexico). At this point, it feels that there IS an agenda with Emilia Pérez but what for exactly? There has been respectful representation in cinema of the trans community (Hilary Swank and Felicity Huffman come to my mind) and the Academy lost the opportunity to nominate Daniela Vega for A Fantastic Woman. Overall, Emilia Perez fails to delve into the problems it supposedly explores. Just so you Americans can fully understand Mexico's anger towards Emilia Perez, imagine that a German guy decides to make a movie about 9/11 (a sensitive topic just as narco is a sensitive issue for Mexicans) with Greek actors who don't speak english properly, and is about Osama but he discovers she is trans and is a musical and at the end it doesn't matter all the lives his attack took, because now Osama is a trans woman and we all sing happily.

Heres what I think was happening: Emilia Perez is clearly not winning "Best Movie" but they had the "Best International Movie" award in their hands already. But "I'm Still Here" getting that "Best Movie" nomination and such good critics raised a red flag for them. Can you imagine the second most nominated movie of all time losing even the "Best International Movie" for such a small movie like "I'm Still Here"? What a fiasco would that be for "Emilia Perez"! Thats why Netflix started this false narrative that Fernanda Torres and her team were attacking Carla Sofia Gascón, since there were actually a lot of brazilian and latin people in general creating negativity all over the internet about Emilia Perez. But NEVER Fernanda Torres herself nor her team, actually the contrary, Fernanda always says how much she loves being nominated among such rich and diverse group of actors. @chirisici 5 днів тому +1

I'm trying to understand what was so disrespectful about his statement about the Spanish language. He said that Spanish was the language of the poor and of immigrants. People who find that offensive must believe that being a poor person or an immigrant should be a source of shame, or a kind of insult. It's not. Almost all of Audiard's filmography deals with immigrants and impoverished people - they are literally the heroes in his movies. And Spanish IS the language of the poor and of immigrants. That's objectively true. It's a language of so many other things, but he wasn't being inaccurate when he said that - his interest is in telling that story, whether they are Tamil immigrants, or Arab prisoners, or working class French youth. Poverty is nothing to be ashamed of. His intentions were good - I doubt he would spend years on a film project just to hurl insults on his own narrative landscape. It's ridiculous to think that.

I think the Hollywood media was largely ignoring that a huge part of the hate for the film was based on the fact that it is played in a racist imaginary Mexico where not even the actors speak proper Spanish. Can you imagine if some French director made a musical on 9/11 with people that barely speaks English, recorded in Europe and without Americans in the team? With a lot of offensive clichés on American people? Absurd as it is it wouldn’t be as bad, because it would be lacking the racist component on their view of Mexico. Gascon tweets just made all these problems impossible to ignore. She is Emilia Perez in a nutshell.

I'm picking Fernanda Torres, for three reasons - many feel like her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, should have won for "Central Station" ahead of Gwyneth Paltrow, so it could be a "make up" Oscar for that; second, Demi Moore has had so many Razzie nominations and not-as-good performances that some voters might not be willing to overlook that. Third, I think Mikey Madison doesn't have the name recognition of the other two just yet. This will obviously help her, but Torres and Moore have done it longer.

As a Brazilian, I have to agree with the "lack of celebration." The film I'm Still Here with its Oscar nominations turned this awards season experience into a historic and collective feeling for the Brazilian nation. Moreover, seeing Karla Gascon nominated and being aware of the entire community she represents is beautiful!
However, what could have been historic, beautiful, and festive has become toxic and sad. Following the campaigns and news related to the productions has become uncomfortable-where’s the celebration?! I think Netflix’s race this season put Karla in a punching bag position, and unfortunately, it’s been up to her to endure it to the limit. I like her so much, gosh...
That said, I'm Still Here will always have my support. This film represents so much for my country and the world, valuing the memory that political society and citizens are forcing us to forget. We will continue to resist and remember what should have been overcome long ago.

I kind of agree. I feel like this is a year they wanna be seen as "progressive", despite nearly every Progressive out there saying how distasteful this film is. At the same time though... it's made by Netflix... and I just think if the Academy were finally gonna give Netflix a chance, I don't think this would be the one to do it. Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know. I just feel like they'd see this, realize it's a Netflix movie, and think "Oh... nevermind, I guess". But it also just depends on the precursors as well. CODA won because it was getting awards from WGA, and I believe PGA and SAG for ensemble awards. Like it basically crawled its way to the finish line because movies like Power of the Dog, Dune, and Belfast were losing steam as the Oscars got closer. If Emilia Perez wins any Ensemble or Cast awards, it can pretty much be a done deal. We just gotta wait and see. I mean who knows? I keep thinking about the substantial chilling effect that Black protests against Spielberg’s The Color Purple had on its Oscar campaign in ‘86. It went 0/11, which was a scandal, of course. The odds Emilia Perez goes 0/13 increase by the day.
The biggest and most fascinating question of the year remains:
Does the Academy take what will likely be their only opportunity and award Avatar’s female lead / love interest?
Or do they anoint a Global Pop Superstar “Academy Award Winner” at only 32?
Frankly, I’m hoping they reject them both and give Rossellini the Jamie Lee Curtis treatment, (although I do believe Grande would be a deserving winner).
Big hugs, Brian. I hope you’re feeling better today. The KSG of it all has been very hard for me as a queer person. Not only the events of these past weeks, but remembering how quiet all these people were when, say, Mel Gibson was nominated for Hacksaw Ridge a few years ago.

My issue with the Brutalist AI isn’t the degree to which it was used as much as the how and why. I’m actually LESS bothered by the generative AI because the images were then given to actual artists to make the final product we see in the movie. The AI used to tweak the performances wasn’t about “audio levels,” it altered vowel sounds in the accent for the portions where they spoke Hungarian. Because the accent is hard. If AI is used, I mind less when it’s used to make up for lack of resources, more when it’s used to make the final product to compensate for the shortcomings of the artists. Just live with there being slight imperfections in the accent like most every other movie ever made where someone is doing an accent.

I think Anora is a bit silly to go after because of the intimacy coordinator because she was offered one and turned it down, because she had worked with the director and director's wife well before the scene was shot -- the intimacy was coordinated, this isn't a situation where an actress had sex scenes sprung upon her or changed by the actor taking advantage. I'd always advocate for someone to be on set and be separate to the director, a more neutral third party, but ultimately she felt safe enough to turn it down.
With regards to Emilia Perez, it should not have been nominated for this many awards. It was controversial before it was nominated simply due to the portrayal of trans issues and mexico. If it had just got music, sound or one acting nomination it wouldn't be under the scrutiny it is now.

The problem with the intimacy co-ordinator not being used is even if she felt she was not pressured the publicity of it re-opens the door for others to be pressured. There’s a reason they are supposed to be mandatory now, it’s way too easy of a situation to coerce or pressure people into doing things they uncomfortable with, it’s also a hard situation to advocate for yourself in because of all the studio and filming pressures. It sets a bad precedent. It’s also inherently unprofessional, it’s not just about actors comfort, it’s about having someone there to advocate, maintain boundaries, make sure proper barriers are used, and ensure that none of the actors or people working on the set take end up in a compromising, uncomfortable, or otherwise bad situation in the course of filming these scenes. You may go into the scene comfortable but then something happens and now what? Do you feel you can speak up? The reason it’s a big deal is that it has ramifications beyond the film. They basically spat in the face of people that worked really hard to make sure the coordinators are present to prevent situations that have occurred in the past, whether or not the people involved claimed to be “comfortable” at the time of filming. Now other sets can point to this movie and go, “well they didn’t use one, do we really need to use one? Nudge nudge.” It might seem nominal when you only look at the film but it’s introduced a recent precedent, a fissure, in a system that’s inherently meant to protect people in their job and is still just becoming recognized as a necessary industry standard. Her saying she was comfortable shows a professional naivety towards why a co-ordinator is there in the first place, it’s like someone deciding they don’t need a lawyer to represent them in court they’re going to represent themselves.
This isn’t to discredit her comfort, I don’t wish her to feel bad, but it was very unprofessional from everyone involved in this scene/movie (in front of and behind the camera) to not insist one was there.

Madison is in the right line of work for her personality whereas someone like Blake Lively is not. I get what you’re saying though and think for bigger productions it’d perhaps be wise to make it mandatory. Madison wanted to be authentic and it’s almost like her version of method acting, but a different actor may feel in hindsight they were taken advantage of. Free Mikey though.

Excellent comment!!❤ Intimacy Coordinators are a must regardless of how many sex scenes there are in a film or TV production. Secondly, I encourage those people arguing against having an Intimacy Coordinator to read the backstory to what happened on the set of Last Tango in Paris and a certain scene that involved SA.
The lead actress in that film is still traumatized decades later. Safety and Consent over anything, imagine if there was an Intimacy Coordinator on that set back in 1972, smdh😒🤦🏾‍♀️.

Hmm. My take on this sitch in general is that given all the negativity and hostility in our culture in general these days, it’s not surprising it’s rubbed off on the Oscars to this extent.
However, I can’t justify Gascon’s hostility or that shown towards her. I also think Anora should have had an intimacy coordinator, but that’s really water under the bridge, as is the Brutalist/AI flap. Did those issues REALLY affect the quality of those movies? If not, let it go.
To me, the dumbest controversy is the liberties taken on Dylan’s bio in A Complete Unknown. Every biopic ever made, since the beginning of cinema, has taken liberties with their subjects. The classic case was the Cole Porter biopic with Cary Grant, which didn’t even admit to a hint of his homosexuality. So it’s time to stop obsessing about this stuff. I think Unknown is perfectly worthy of a nomination.
It is kind of funny that Conclave seems to be the only scandal-free movie, the dubious Rossellini mom notwithstanding (and I guess certain religious orgs weren’t thrilled with it either, if one considers that scandalous). Maybe it’s time for Ralph to even things out by having another mile-high assignation with a stewardess (JUST KIDDING; I think he’s fab).
Anyway, Brian, glad you did this. I knew there was a reason I liked you.

I am not Mexican. I support trans people. And I think vehemently that EP is a terribly made film. Except for the solid Saldaña performance, there is nothing else worthy of ANY award. What were those voters thinking?! The screenplay is ridiculous. A murderous cartel boss wants to be a woman. Huh? After a while he wants to see his reluctantly exiled family back. He does. (Though one of the kids says he smells like papa, he remains auntie. Huh?). Wife falls in love and takes the kids. Kidnaps back and forth. Emilia starts up a non-profit with drug $ to help people whose loved ones have been butchered, murdered, disappeared by him and his cartel. WTF? Penultimate scene: everybody but the lawyer and the kids die. (But not before wife recognizes EP as her husband and loves him/her again. Soap opera? I’m not even going into the lawyer’s role in all this. O dear.) But the most preposterous scene has got to be the parade honoring EP. The people marching down the street with the iconic Mexican brass band behind a huge statue of Emilia like they traditionally do-get ready for it-with a statue of the Virgin Mary. The music (yes, this movie is supposed to be a musical. Whaaat? ) This is a terrible movie. And notice I’ve not mentioned the hateful actor who plays the supporting ( category fraud) role. Isn’t it sad that the first trans actor to be nominated for a major role turns out to be such a POS giving a comparatively mediocre role. If she shows up for the ceremony I’d be very, very surprised.

I’m 56. I’ve watched every Oscar ceremony since 1982, when Henry Fonda and Katherine Hepburn won for On Golden Pond. I’ve followed the Oscar horserace for 43 years. And the last few years, it’s been nasty. This year is the nastiest, but they’ve all been nasty, because I remember what it used to be like. And the problem is social media.
