    I just ordered an Epi ES-335 Trad Pro (arriving today) and I've been watching your series on the 335 almost continuously all week. I don't think I could have possibly learned more from any other source. It's been the optimal primer for me. Watching some of your other videos on different guitars has been highly educational as well. Thank you so much for all the work you do, I'm a fan for life!

      @@theguitaristas I believe it is. I don't know what the difference is really, though there are four colors to choose from. I ordered the "red wine" model but the others looked pretty cool as well. Maybe there is some difference in hardware, but they have the Alnico Classic Pros as well, and I assume the same wiring loom.

      @attrition0 2 роки тому +4

      @@scottdownen2554 I picked up a trad pro, and yep they have the same hardware except they have some additional wiring: the volume pots are push/pull for coil taps and the volume controls have a treble bleed. Mine is also wine red and I love it, cheers

    • @attrition0
      @attrition0 2 роки тому +3

      @@scottdownen2554 I picked up a 2021 model used that seemed to be untouched so I don't know if it had any work done before it reached me, but I have no dead spots on the fretboard or anything impeding my play. I have my action set about 2mm on bass side and 1.5mm on treble side and it plays great. I imagine with these guitars it will be hit or miss on how it arrives from the factory, I've heard some people had sharp frets but mine are great. Luck of the draw maybe, so good luck and get a setup if you find any issues, it should play great.

    Really like and appreciate your work. I have had a Casino for about a year. All the guys who can actually play guitars and I mean play, rave about the Epiphone Casino worn in green drab. I very recently got an Epiphone inspired by Gibson 335 in cherry red another really nice bit of kit but much heavier than the Casino chunkier neck with a beautiful finish. Both played well straight from the box and you are quite right that they have different tonal qualities. The finishes are different. 335 costs about £200 more but it's great as is the Casino. Ideal for beginners

    The Casino is the guitar I wish I'd got first as a beginner. The fact that its hollow body delivers a bedroom friendly acoustic volume means that that it can be snatched up and played on the slightest whim, whereas the Les Paul copy I chose instead needed to be plugged in and switched on in order to sound "good" but even then all my mistakes and crappy tones inhibited me from broadcasting through my Peavey Rage amp when there was anyone in the house.
    The Casino Coupe I have now is loud enough acoustically to be heard but not so loud as to disturb.

    They all sound great in their own way, especially with a talented guitar player playing through them, but they all have a different timbre. I have my preferences, which lean towards the P-90 and mini-humbucker pickups, rather than the full-sized humbuckers. I prefer hollow to semi-hollow guitars, which gives the Casino an advantage, and P-90 pickups on hollow body guitars is perhaps my favorite tone, but mini-humbuckers on hollow body guitars is another favorite. John Lee Hooker's favorite was a "Blondie" Zephyr, although he was seen with a Riviera or Sheraton too. Another Epiphone hollow body with mini-humbuckers is the "Sorrento", an ES-125T type guitar, but with a longer scale length. Other Chicago blues cats besides John Lee Hooker were drawn to the mini-humbucker equipped semi-hollow Rivieras, Sheratons, or hollow Zephyr or Sorrento. The brighter sound cuts through a mix better than full-sized humbuckers, and the lows are tighter, with a more scooped sound than P-90 pickups. That was an interesting and informative comparison video, and nice playing too - thank you sir. Cheers!

    Thanks for a great video, take care.
    I did own a 1966 Gibson ES-335, it was a terrific blues machine, had it for 15 years and I sold it to a friend and a few years later I bought a 2000 Epiphone Dot Deluxe.
    With a good setup on the Dot Deluxe, the playability is almost there and the sound is good but would benefit from an upgrade consisting of better pots, new wiring, better switches and humbuckers wired with coil splitting. Always KEEP the original parts you swap.

    I think the Casino is a different animal entirely. For me, it was a great transition & education into electric guitar as an accoustic learner. The feel & sound clean was very familiar, then driven, mastering the feedback & working with the volume & tone knobs was all part of the fun. It then drove me onto 335s & Les Paul's. As I have said before, my 335 was a challenge until I undertook some tweaking, but it has now redeemed itself to the point I feel it does Tele stuff better than my Tele aswell as the rockier stuff. I could be very easily swayed to that Riviera & the Sheraton, however still trying to find a Lazarus. They appear to be like the preverbial rocking horse **** at the moment to get hold of.

    I've watched part 1 & part 2 so many times now. Thank you for the really insightful breakdown. Would it be too much to ask for a part 3- something that isn't a 335 derivative? Perhaps a PRS Hollowbody Piezo SE, Hagstroms, Reverends? No harm asking😊

    • @steves12strings
      @steves12strings Рік тому +1

      I can tell you the PRS SE Hollowbody piezo is a whole different animal, honestly. It's an excellent guitar but it plays and sounds very different to a 335. The secret to the prs is using one jack to an acoustic amp while humbuckers in another standard or high gain amp. The 335 has more bark/bite and is a bit more dynamic than the prs without the piezo in use. But man, a little piezo blended in the neck humbucker with some gain on the prs is a near perfect studio tone.

    • @mrfq_abg
      @mrfq_abg Рік тому +1

      @@steves12strings Thanks for the rundown, as i suspected the PRS would be really different, great to have some choices that aren't derivatives of the 335, as great as that platform is. Sounds like i'll have to factor in an acoustic amp if i ever break down and go for the PRS!🙃

    As a hobbyist lutherer I have owned a Dot, a Sheraton11, Riviera and Casino all MIK models. The best one as standard was the Riviera i.m.o. I changed nothing on it and foolishly moved it on because it was red. The Sheraton had lousy sounding pick ups, not a big expense to buy better pick ups but I just never liked the feel of that guitar so let it go. A blonde Casino I struggled with to make it playable but it was an ongoing struggle, not having a centre block made it very unstable, would need regular setting up, even after a fret level , new nut and Gotoh bridge I let it go. The Blonde Dot, I did some work, new pick ups, not really necessary, Tusq nut, Gotoh bridge, 50's wiring harness, fret level/profile etc, sounds great, plays and feels fantastic and very stable and will not let it go, anybody who plays it wants to buy it. I'm still looking for a blonde Riviera mik. Many years ago I had a Gibson semi from the late 60's, I cannot stress enough the value for money in these Epi's, I can only speak for the Korean models, have no time with a Chinese one.

    I have the Sheraton ii, its a good guitar not great but good, the wiring needed attention right away and the pickups need upgrading, lots of people don’t care for the aircraft carrier size head stock I like it though, all in all for less than $500 US its acceptable. Btw I remember the "stealth" one as the Gibson "Trini Lopez" model from the mid sixties. They had one in Selmer's window for months - until someone with the necessary dosh realized it was the same as the current (then) ES 335 except with diamond F holes....and actually slightly cheaper 'cos I guess Selmers were trying to move it. Gibson also actually made this model with a deep body (rather like the Barney Kessel signature). Pete - Master of Useless Info

    I got pretty into the Epiphone semi hollow and hollows lately... '20 ES-335, '98 Riviera Korean built with the humbuckers, ES-339 P90 Pro, Inspired by Lennon Revolution Casino, and an old Korean Alleykat. Each has some strong points and have reasons to stick around here in my stash of guitars I think, all solid for the price point as well. If you wanted to include another Epiphone offering you could toss in a Uptown Kat maybe? Kinda a bit different with the way they are built and the Gretsch style control layout mixed with mini humbuckers. Might be a good one to consider.

      @@theguitaristas Why thank you! I also feel you on the 2020 ES-335 (olive drab gloss finish) not really jumping out and "speaking" to me either. I really like the neck profile, the color is wonderful, and I jam on it unplugged a good bit, but I just haven't "clicked" with that one yet and I can't completely put my finger on just why (I'll watch the 335 series you did on yours there). I'm the second owner which also tells you the previous guy didn't "click" with it either (he said as much).
      The 339 is a riot, those P90 Pro pickups are pretty fantastic (Pelham blue) and I get some really good rock tones out of that guitar, the old Riviera is just a beautiful guitar, SUPER well built and sounds fantastic (Cherry color), the Inspired by Lennon Casino ("natural" refinished version) has those Gibson P90s factory which are GREAT I have to admit, that's probably my favorite to play out of the lot, and the Alleykat (Cherry Sunburst) is just kinda unique compared to the others. Different neck profile, different control layout and still a rather good sounding guitar too. If you end up with the Uptown I'm curious what color will show up :). I rather liked the green, but then saw some good pictures of a blue one online and now I'm torn.

I find things to like soundwise with all of these (and again, I could listen to you riff for hours straight), and aesthetically they all push certain buttons. Leaning towards that olive drab (which actually is available in Japan contrary to what I first thought when you reviewed it originally) but the Wolfe stealth intrigues as well.
