I was on a Kodiak bear hunt years ago. We saw a bear through our telescope and set out after it. After about 30 minutes of hiking we saw it. It was only about 30 yards away and it turned and was trying to get away from us. My cousin fired a shot into its back with his .338...and that's when things got scary. The bear, who was trying to run from us, turned back towards us and let out the most frightening, guttural roar that I've ever heard. A few more shots and it was over, but I will never forget that roar.

That is a scary story. I think I’d rather dive headfirst into a running wood chipper than be under a wounded griz. The only time I’ve ever been scared in the woods: hiking a trail near Rainier, came across a very young black bear cub rustling around in the brush a few yards off the trail. I cleared out of the area as quickly, quietly as possible: all senses on high alert.
