  • In this video I show you a large print on A2 format based on a 2010 picture taken with a Nikon D700. I lost the RAW file and the only Jpeg I have kept from this time is only 3Mo and I'm still able to print a large A2 fineArt copy of it.
I raise question : Do you really need the last Z9, Z7 ii, Z6 ii ...?
    My answer is NO.
What you need is creativity and reliable camera and there is a good list of these cameras that can save you money and let you express your creativity out there on the field !
Let me know in the comment what you think of this?

I have bought the D700 in 2010, and I still use and love it. I am considering backing it up with a D3(s) or another D700. I don't need all the fancy stuff that the new cameras are offering. And for my video work, I use a Fujifilm camera. But my camera of choice remains the Nikon D700 for stills. It's just exceptionnal.

Nice video. I have a D850 but turn to my D700 and D3s often. I have no desire to go to the Z system. I am happy with the results I get now.

      I clearly understand your feeling.
I decided to stick to the DSLR system
I don’t need eye AF on 90% of the sensor as I never frame my subject close to the edge !!!
And I love soooo much the optical view finder !
DSLR are on very low prices now! It’s time to make good deals

For me new mirrorless cameras are a blessing as there are a lot of great deals on older digital cameras and lenses on the used market. It took me a litter over a year to get a used D700 in mint condition (277 shutter actuations) and it was worth the wait. The D700 lives up to it's reputation. I would like to suggest a Nikon lens to you that gets passed over because of the plastic mount. The 28-80mm G "kit" lens. This lens is remarkable for color and sharpness, and at around $40 it is a bargain gem. Nikon put their best designer in charge of this lens design to make it the best affordable lens out there at the time. It has only 6 elements, the same number as the 50mm f18 and is just as sharp. As for my favorite Nikon camera, the D300. I like that model so much that I wound up with 6 of them because of the image quality and the low price on the used market ($150 in excellent condition) I agree with you that 16MP seems to be the right size. I have several 24MP cameras and 24MP seems too much to work with for what I shoot. The 12MP of the D700 and D300 seems just right for me.

      Hi Dominic,
thanks for your comment and sorry for my late answer. The D700 was amazing at its time and I'm pretty sure it's still worth it today for a daily use without customer expectations. For a personal use it's a perfect tool, even for someone who wants to start in photography, in the DSLR word.
Like you say, mirrorless make the DSLR's market drop ! ! ! Some cameras stay at a high price like the Df for instance which I adore even more than the D700. The D3X is at the same price as some D5... but D700; D300s, even D90, D610,, D750, D810... great cameras (not all of them...) are becoming accessible.
      Don't know about the 28-80, I can't tell you.
      Have a good day

    Deal Didier!
Thanks a lot! 5years ago I switched back to Nikon from Fuji. I wanted to use my AI and AIS Nikkors from my Nikon F3 times. Now I have a Z6, which also works great with old manual lenses, but I recently bought a D700, D300 and D200. These Dslrs where the first good Nikons, and I still love the handling, and the fact, that You can use old manual Nikkors and early AF Nikkors from the 90ties: AF D 20mm, AF 180 F2,8 , AF 300 F4.
Many of my old Nikkors have a personal history to me.
    My top 5 (very personal)
    Nikkor AIs 24mm F2,8
    Nikkor AIs 35mm F2
    Micro Nikkor AIs 105mm F4
    AF D 180mm F2,8
    AF D 300mm F4
    Greetings from Vienna

    lovely video Didier 🙂
my first full-frame camera was a Nikon D700 and I paired it with a Nikon 24mm Ai-S lens. the combination was wonderful for landscapes - so organic and with a lovely softness to them. I had some really nice A2 and even A1 prints made from the raw files. 12MP is more than enough (if you're not cropping!!)

The image quality and color are excellent and I love having easily accessible buttons and switches. I am happy with the pictures it takes. Hi Maurice,
my problem is about gear Acquisition Syndrome... other wise for sure I don't need to change and play with other cameras. In one hand I love photography gear and playing with different things. It helps me learn a lot and improve my photographic skills. In the other hand I defend the concept of doing great photographs with old gear. Yes 46Mpx are great and I love my Lumix S1R with Leica SL Lenses. It's astonishing in terms of quality. But for reasons that I can't explaine, I love as much taking my old D3X and any of my G lenses or my Df with any of my Ais lenses... it's a matter of connection with your gear. If you feel the need to discover something else than the D700, investigate and find your new tool for creativity.

I am using now a Fuji X-M1, for my daily walk around camera, because of its being small , light and easy to carry. Never the less, the Nikon D700 is my all time favorite for taking great pictures.! "Oh! Ship"...LOL! Great capture and print production.
I still shoot with many of my old digital CCD cameras, some with only 2 or 3-megapixels as they have so much character and are just fun to use and they can start conversations with other photographers on the trail or street, and the camera curious public.
Some of these cameras are approaching a quarter century and back in the day we didn't think they would hold up near that long, but surprise... they are still here and still produce great pixs just like my near 70- year old homemade wood Pinhole camera I built as a kid.

I still use my D700 for portraits because the low resolution of the sensor makes no difference as my portrait shots never need any cropping. But I also still use it because the raw files have a certain quality to them, they are beautiful, it's hard to describe, something about how the tones are rendered, particularly in black and white that just makes the images better than the raw files from the latest and greatest modern high res sensors. I've only seen the same quality in the raw files of the D3, D4 and a similar quality in the Fuji GFX camera raw files. I hate to say it's a "film-like" quality, because I shoot mostly film, and the D700 doesn't make your shots look like film. But they do have a "film-like" quality to them, in the sense that there's a lifelike realness to the images. I regret selling my D4 for the same reason. So despite being 13 years old the D700 has to remain an integral part of my kit to retain the "magic". The zeiss 85mm helps.
I also shoot a lot of landscapes with a 80-200mm f2.8 AF-S ED nikkor that I adapt to a fuji X-T1. I take a kenko Pro 300 1.4x teleconverter too. I paid only $300 for that lens, and $300 for the camera. The lens is incredible, and beats the pants off any zoom or telephoto prime that fuji has ever come out with, or any nikon Z mount or other mirrorless zooms for that matter. It's all I need. For wide shots I can do a Pano, and I can swap it straight onto my film SLR to shoot film. The cheap $70 teleconverter is better than any modern or vintage nikkor teleconverter, and I've tested them all. The fujifilm X-T1 is cheap, awesome, perfect for travel and hiking because it's so lightweight. Makes up for the heavy nikkor 80-200. And makes lovely images, not quite as special as the D700, but more aesthetically pleasing than the more expensive modern options available.
We all know photography didn't get better in the last 5 years, despite the current generation having cameras in their pockets and glued to their hands their whole lives. That tells me the kit of the past was plenty good enough then, and is plenty good enough now.
Seriously the only reason to buy an expensive new camera now is if you shoot mainly video, or if you're a sports photographer that can't afford to miss a shot and can write it off as expenses. If you can't afford brand new gear, photography is a field where you are in luck.

I have the D700, and have made some amazing pictures with it. I'm using the AFD lenses which I can also use on my F100 and F90X film bodies. What really appeals to me about the D700 is the sensor noise above ISO 400 - using the in-camera monochrome profile, it has a feel just like Eastman 5222 which is what 90% of my film photos are shot on. With professionals switching to the Z mount, I have picked up used AFD lenses a fantastic prices, and since the FTZ adapter does not support AFD lenses, I will not be migrating to the Z mount for the foreseeable future.

I own the Z9 for sports/action/wildlife, but the D700 still has a special place for me. BTW: The D700 was my first DSLR which I purchased for $400 US in 2016. I don't think anyone would argue with the high resolution isn't everything for all types of photography. That said, if it fits your needs and makes you happy, by all means. @@DidierMOULINPhotography You are most welcome. To answer your question, for sports/wildlife/action the Z9 (I own it) is far better than any camera I've owned for this. The combination of shooting silently (for wildlife, golf, in houses of worship, at dance events) and black out free at high frame rates is incredibly helpful. When shooting in low light (studio or outdoors) the illuminated buttons are also very helpful. The flip out screen is underrated and has come in very handy (especially the older I get). The smaller file size (albeit compressed) is very good. Would I like a better low light, higher pixel pitch, lower megapixel camera to go along with it..... Well, I'm still holding onto my D700. I bought a D700 in 2018. Only one cardslot, no video, only 95% viewfinder, bulky, heavy, 14 years old stuff, a lot of shots, only 25600 ISO, shutter sounds like a hammer, a 100% magnification of the files on my 22" screen is the limit......Amazing! I don't miss another card slot, i make no videos, I'm used to 95%, bulky is right for my hands, weight means autostabilisation, 12800 ISO is possible with really good results exspecially in black and white, I'm not a pixel peeper, the greatest print reaches 60X90 cm (how many of us prints larger?) i like the sound of the hammer and it is going on and on, hammering all day long, but the best is: I get high quality photos due to a very good sensor and at least: to make good Photos depends on me... and a bit the lenses too😃 I feel no temptation to change my old stuff. Another fine detail: I use the same FMount lenses for D700, F4, F100, FM2, F601, D500. Ai lenses from the 1970s - G lenses up to 2017. Yes, i make b/w photos with Nikon FM2 film camera and G-lense wide open. The F4 from 1988 combined with G-lenses is usable in S-mode and P-mode at all apertures without stabilization, The F100 filmcamera from 1998 accepts stabilized G-lenses at all. So I ask: Why I ever should change?

My everyday cameras are still the M8 and M9-P.
Coming from a Nikon F2 background since 1998 and later the digital F5s since 2008 I now use all of my Nikkor lenses on a Leica SL (Typ 601) with the vertical grip I a m pretty happy with. I also had the D3 and D4 in between but was never absolutely satisfied with the feel (rubberized dials) and ergonomics (stupid positioning of vertical shutter release, D3 and menubutton, D4) of those bodies. Sure, the Nikon DSLRs are way more responsive when it comes to shooting more than one frame in a row but most of the time it is not needed. Love my 135mm 1:2 Ai-S, 300mm 1:2.8 Ai-S and even the old 50mm 1:1.4 S-C-Auto for its beautiful 14 lined sunstars to name just a few of these golden gems.

Hello and thanks for your comment. Sorry for my late answer. I understand your feeling regarding the interface. It's personal and each person has its preferences. I tried the SL2 and really didn't like it. I'm wondering even today if for the pleasure I wouldn't get a SL 601 as I love its design and it won't be for any productive work but for the pleasure to simplify the process.
I enjoy that you share your experience about the SL with Nikon Lenses. Mirrorless cameras have the advantage of peaking to help and confirm focus. Nikon DSLR's have a very well done focus assistance too. which is very efficient and work at any place you put your focus point.
Owning some nice ais lenses, I love using them with the Df for instance. And on the Lumix S1 or S1R... with the benefit of the IBIS, which the SL doesn't have. do you miss the IBIS with these long lenses you use on the SL ?

The 135mm is so short and dense that there is no need for extra stabilisation especially when using the SL with the vertical grip. I hate using peaking as it doesn't make any sense to me. I use the punch in magnification for more than precise focusing which works very quick on the SL.

      @@Funktrainer yes with a monopod it’s fine.
What I don’t like about the SL is that the magnification is done in the center .
After you can move the area but it takes time.
With the LUMIX you can select the place of the focus point easily with a part of the screen while keeping the eye in the view finder and once you ask for magnification it zooms where the focus point is… very pleasing to use and the first of many reasons I didn’t buy the SL when I was switching to the L mount alliance.

      @DidierMOULINPhotography  2 роки тому

Well this is what I heard also but honestly my eyes and my prints don’t show me any weakness in the VR version.
The higher definition sensor I have is the D810 on which I use preferably prime lenses.
The 24-70 VR is very good in the D3S / D3X / D6 and the VR is a real benefit on these old style cameras DSLR which have no IBIS…
What I know is that the 24-70 2.8 VR is expensive, but the Z lenses make it cheaper on the second hand market.
Also it’s a E lens… it will not work on too old cameras, nor on film cameras.

50mm f/1.2 AIS : superb but a little soft at 1.2 Close it a little and it works so well even on 24Mpx sensor

    Hi Didier, nice video and channel and if I may make some suggestions for you and the contents you mention;
AF of the video is a bit erratic but I can imagine this will be also a matter of camera price, as will be a microphone which would benefit sound quality if attached to you so the sound does not fade out when you lean back. A very easy and cheap improvement would be some anti reflective sound mats on the wall.
Your video frame is really too wide for my liking. I like the background but it does not give me any information. I believe a line up of your lenses (in focus (aperture!)) would be of more use to the viewer.
The prices you mention seem a bit off on today's market value 03/2022.
Most of the MF focus lenses you mention are also really expensive on the second hand market. Whether that is worthwhile is up to a beginner buyer.
I have and use just about all of Nikon's MF lenses and value them for the special effect they give.
For instance the 55mm 1.2 is horribly soft but I use that special bokeh effect to catch a certain mood. Is it worth the ridiculous market price?... again; up to the buyer.
Same for the 35mm 1.4 ; the price is just because of it's old reputation. My 3 examples are all extremely sharp in the center , so perfect for DX.
The 50mm 1.2 has horrible coma on the corners so can barely be used at it's maximum 1.2 aperture at night but when stopped down, is one of the sharpest 50mm lenses.
Most people want AI-S lenses but AI lenses in general have a longer rotational throw, so are easier to focus. AI-S is not per se better because newer...!
Using a Df camera with older lenses makes life a LOT easier. The sensor is like the D4 so more than good enough.
I still use my D3s a lot for night photography but using my D850 is not just for the megapixels alone; the AF intelligence, tracking and other features are so much better...
Am I myself, as an amateur photographer, capable to use all of the D850 to the fullest...?
    No, certainly not.
Would I choose a D850 over a D3 if the price would be the same?
    YES certainly.
Is the D850 worth the huge price difference for an amateur like me?
    Probably not.
*PS for anyone reading this; regarding older Nikon lenses; VERY, very useful info can be found on Ronald Vink's and Bjorn Roerslett websites.

Thanks a lot Peter for this helpful comment.
      I really appreciate.
For the mic, yes since few videos I test the fact that I leave my Rode mic on a stand but you are right it’s not good.
For the background I don’t have room where I can have a shelf behind me with my gear ! By the way my gear is always in a vault when not in use! Not on a shelf
Sometimes AI-S lenses have different Aperture blades count and shape. I guess it’s the case of the 28mm f/2.8
Focus accuracy and speed is linked to the lumix S1 + sigma 35mm f/1.2 which I love the effect but yes, AF is struggling when I put something between the lens and me!
I’m thinking of POV style videos but still didn’t get the chance and courage to do so…
      Thanks again. See you!

@@DidierMOULINPhotography Hi, I think you're already starting great!
Maybe check out David Saylors's channel; he does POV in a kind of very amateur way but it is kind of honest and very nice and easy to watch.
I meant the gear you review, lined up, in front of you.
The 28mm 2.8 AI-S is special in that it does not have a AI predecessor (previous AI version have a VERY different glass layout ; 7/7 , the AI-S has 8 lenses in 8 groups)
Yes some differences in between AI and AI-S versions; the famous 105mm 2.5 AI-S vs AI has different aperture blades and here the AI is much better than the AI-S version.

Dear Didier: I love your approach so contrary to marketing. I had a modern Sony APS-C camera but I didn't like the color. I got to a D700 and series D lenses it was like rediscovering myself with the best 35mm version of my time. I could put the Canon 5D Classic alongside the D700, even the early Olympus E. There's some pretty good gear out there for cheap general photography. It is true that for a very specific photograph, a high resolution, great autofocus and high frames per second they are important advantages to value. Even so, it is not impossible to achieve a good result with “old” gear either. They want us to believe that photography can only be done with the latest of the latest. I like that you can relativize it with tests in A2 size.

I feel fortunate to have 2 - D700s, and don't think I need anything else (I'm old AND "old school"). I purchased one of them almost new a few years ago and didn't want to burn it up while learning how to use it, so bought another more used one to practice on. Then a couple years ago I decided to buy a D850 - over a period of a few months I shot 49 photos with it, put it away, and it sits in the bag all the time, unused while I just continue reaching for the D700. Newer (including mirror-less) cameras with all the bells and whistles are absolutely unnecessary for fine photography.
