- In this video i show 2 pictures in large print, one on MDF and another on canvas. My point is that the larger you print, the more you naturally increase the viewing distance to the picture, and hence the need for resolution does not go up when you increase the print size.

I bought the d700 as my entry to full-frame. Best decision I ever made. Heard lots of people say "go with Canon" or "Go with Sony." I can't tell you how many times I compare images and think "Dang, my camera is 12 years old, and I would pick these images over your brand new camera." The best way I can put it is that the D700 gently caresses the light on to the sensor.

Hi. It's been a while now. Do you still think the same about Nikon D700? I do like pictures from my D700 more than the other 5 cameras I have - 2 of them being newer and double the resolution.
I don't know if i can call it an upgrade, but i really want to sell my nikon d3400 for a d700 however, im still hesitated about about this decision.
@@Lambda0 I'd say it would be an upgrade and downwgrade in some respect. Providing you have or want to buy full frame lenses. 12Mp would print A3 at 300dpi. It is a lot heavier camera. My favourite of all five i have but it is not travel friendly. My x100 is a different beast -also 12Mp, slow af, small portable. I'd say if you are not happy with pictures you already make, there is no point, but if you are and you are ready to sacrifice portability, resolution and dinymic range you will get lovely image quality. It takes CF cards.
Thanks for clearing this for me, i am happy with the nikon d3400 and all my lenses are fx so the jump to the FX world should be easy but i cant sacrifice the dynamic range on that little beast, the only point of buying a D700 was to enter the FX wold and see how useful the little LCD screen would be.
I’ve never understood why people think you need these massive resolutions to print “big”. A 65 inch 4K tv is a little over 8 megapixels.

I absolutely agree with you. I print a lot of a2 and panoramas as big as 40x120cm on my Canon Pro 1000. There is no problem using 12Mp. I have done some test with my 42, 24 and 12 Mpx (A7R2, A9, A7S) cameras. Unfortunately, many of the influencers love to stick their nose right upon the prints, just to tell you that you need whatever they try to promote.

It's awesome that we are in 2020 still talking about the D700, i think that no other camera received such attention during so long. I have mine for 3 years now and it's still perfect for my needs.

I just got my D700 off of Ebay. Everything seems to work on it. I paid $425 and I got two lens with it. 50mm and Sigma 28mm to 200mm zoom. I think I got a good deal. The camera is really heavy. It take a lot of getting used too. I know why they started making cameras lighter. But this camera is rugged and should last a long time.
@@Newrivergraphics872 Gary, you will get used to the weight, no worries. And some day, if you use the D700 a lot, every other camera will feel flimsy and plastic-ish when you pick them up. But agreed, it is no lightweight camera at all. It sounds to me like you made a GREAT deal if you got a good copy + 2 lenses for 400 USD. My experience is that a D700 body alone in good condition is around 400 EUR. So you did well - congrats!
Great video! Thanks! Mega pixel count is only one of the factors of how a camera produces a photo. The colour science and the processor etc. all play a roll. I've frequently heard how the D700 got it right in that mixture and that is why, to this day it is still one of the best cameras out there.

@@frederikboving No I don't crop heavily. Most people think 12 megapixels is Out of Date and not enough nowadays. They don't understand that D700 each Pixel Area is very large to get light comes In. The way D700 renders is very unique colors. If we compare to D800 or 810 for example which has smaller Pixel Area.
As usual great truth explained, we shoot with 24.3 mega pixel DSLR's still with our business. I have the 36mp D810 but rarely use it. I had purchased a large format printer yrs ago and agree with your statements.
Yes I am looking at the new Nikon Z6II & Z5 because of GAS but this too shall pass. I am sure we will eventually go there, the Z5 price with the FTZ adapter was enticing for me but no, not needed. I have the D700 for my own personal photography. The right tool for the job helps but when you have a good piece of gear and some knowledge about what your doing the results are obvious. I was looking at some infrared my wife took back in the day on her D70 6.1mp camera, images are still beautiful.

I shoot with my D700 as my main body and think nothing of it. It was my dream camera when I first started shooting over 10 years and 3 years ago I finally got one and it is every bit as wonderful as I had imagined. I will not be parting with it for more MP.

YES! About bloody time! I have been doing photography for years. Probably longer than half of today's professional photographers have been alive, and I am sick and tired of the constant blabbering about more megapixels! 😂
You mention the "sweet spot", where more MP becomes useless/irrelevant. I would say that is somewhere around 12-16MP. The Nikon D3 has 12MP, and takes absolutely stunning pictures.
I have now watched quite a few of your videos about the Nikon D700, and have decided to buy one.

Great video, perfectly agree! I've made test - but on Photoshop only - enlarging D700 photos up to 77 cm wide and they look perfect. I believe this is due to the fact (among other things), that it had the largest sensor pixels size ever put on a DSLR. Anyway, that's a camera I love and will keep using for a long time! I agree with you Frederik. Back in the early days of digital I did wedding and portrait work with a Nikon D1X and D100 and I printed several 24x30, 20x24 and 16x20 inch prints with those cameras ( 5.74 MP and 6 MP). I've recently gotten back into photography after about a fifteen year break and I now have a D700, D7100 and D7200. I feel sure that I'll be able to print as large as I want with those "older" cameras. :)

Yes, many will not believe that the natural viewing distance makes the requirements to resolution less demanding, and that micro contrast is more important than resolution in terms of assessing an image to be sharp! I have heard - but not tried it myself - the a billboard only has a resolution of around 1-2MB simply because no more is needed as the natural viewing distance is far, far away!
I just ordered a D700 along with a Tamron 28-75mm Nikon mount and a Nikon 300mm after shooting exclusively with a Sony A6000 and a variety of adapted lens for the last 5-6 years.. getting very excited to get back to Nikon and a full frame system
The shooting experience is so much better with Nikon - you can really look forward to that part! And FF is also a bonus - you may not notice at first, but I am sure it will grow on you!

The second photo with branches in the foreground is brilliant! It's something that's so unique and genuine. I would agree with you about viewing it as small print, as a small 8x10 I would probably just give it a glance. But as a large print it's truly art! You should look for a few quality contests that have landscape categories and submit it... you never know.

Ha-ha! Yes, the D700 is different from the other cameras in the Nikon lineup. My preferred camera for B&W and portraits.

A reasonable resolution gives several advantages. Smaller files which can be post-produced also with computers which are not build up with the latest hardware, and the possibility to use with satisfactory results also lenses which are not insanely sharp like AI, AIS and AF-D. 36 or more megapixels require a heavy investment in terms of lenses and computer in order to fully appreciate the potential. Precise autofocus calibration becomes very difficult. And at the end of the day, I'm not sure my photos would be better. So I agree with you on all the line, especially when you talk about investing in ourself, more than on the gear. Improve our technique ensures much more noticeable improvements than 10 megapixels more in the sensor. We are so obsessed with sharpness and detail, but I noticed that when I show my photos to my friends or my wife, they do not even consider those aspects.
Despite the common opinion, the ais lenses are sharper than most modern lenses and better made. These are only manual focus which again helps the skillful photographer. No one on DPReview has shown me yet pictures that are more detailed than the ones produced with a d3 or d700 and a good manual focus ais lens.Unfortunately .... otherwise I would rush to the shop and buy a d750 and new plastic lens.

I fully agree - as photographers we are often concerned about the technical quality of the images, but my experience is that the clients are much more engaged in the subject and the emotions the picture produces. The only thing that I have every noticed a client reacting to in terms of how I shot the picture was a very shallow depth of field - and thankfully they liked the way it made the subject stand out. I have never had a client complaining about too few pixels!
@@frederikboving exactly. Composition, creativity are much more relevant then resolution and sharpness! Of course producers do their own interest. It's up to us to understand if the latest technology will help us to get better results.
@@33antonius I own both the D750 and the D700 + some Aps-c bodies. Some AI-S and AF-D lenses, an several modern objectives, primes and zooms. I find the newer lenses generally sharper, more saturated and contrasty. Especially on the D750 thanks ti the resolution. The D750 also has a better high ISO performance and recovers the shadows impressively. But this does not mean that imagines are more beautiful. My wife, for example, prefers the older lenses with the D700, because of the color rendition and of the less emphasis on details, especially on portraits.l, and often I agree with her. They are simply different IMHO, and I like to have both the alternatives. I love the user experience which the D700's body layout and build quality provides, but I also have to admit that for example U1 and U2 custom settings and the more refined Auto ISO, the tiltable display of the D750 are nice to have.
@@ilmatanela1816 Your wife is absolutely right! My wife prefers my Nikon EM. Based on my experiences with the D700 I have bought a virtually new D3. Despite the fact that it has the same sensor as the D700 the results are even better. Please try a D3 and you will know what I mean....Those ai(s) lenses are so sharp and full of contrast that I would need proof to believe that there is anything better (which I have not obtained yet). Please do visit this topic on Dpreview www.dpreview.com/forums/post/64598975 which shows that even a canon 50mm is sharper on a medium format fuji camera than the expensive zoom lens.
I have two D700. 12mp is the sweet spot for me. The only reason for more mp would be cropping and I don't do much of that. I once owned a 24mp camera. Too much. What people don't know is more mp means more storage and taxing on your computer
Agreed. The more resolution the more taxing it is in terms of computing power and storage needed.
Thank you for the great episode. I totaly agree, that for the simple viewing experience 12MP is more then enough. It would be interesting though, if prints of the same size from let's say D850 would look like and if there is any difference.12MP vs ~48MP means that you have only twice as much of resolution in every dimension, so the difference should not be dramatic at all.
They say that a Billboard only has 1-2mp because the viewing distance makes more resolution unnecessary, so I think it all comes down to what viewing distance you plan to have for your images. And the larger you print, the larger your viewing distance will typically be. So I think 12mp will suffice for many appliances.

Well this is just perfect for me at this time. I have been a Nikon film nut for 40 years. I bought a DX camera 4 years ago and have not been happy and have still been using my beloved FE, but film work is expensive. So I am about to go for the D700. Can’t wait and thanks!

Thank you for this explanation. And yes, I can agree. I had let print a 80x120 poster, taken with a Fuji X-T1 which has 16Mp - it looks great. At least way more depends on the dpi. In my case we chosed 60dpi, so it turned out pretty well.

Awesome I’m about to buy one but this was the only concern holding me back as I mostly shoot landscape. Definitely pulling the trigger and grabbing a d700.
Hi Alfred! The only thing that should stop you is if you do heavy cropping or if you need to print large posters that needs to be viewed close up (large posters with ads placed inside a train or metro is one example where I think this makes sense, but it is super specialized cases). Otherwise the D700 resolution should not stop you. You may also want to take a look at the D3 if your are into fast moving subjects! All the best!

Could you make file size comparison and image quality comparison, iso/DR/sharpness between D700, D750 and A7RII 😁
Noted. It will be a challenge to compare the 3 cameras as a fair comparison would have to be with the same lens.
The viewing distance example you gave is rule #1 when discussing resolution in terms of printing. No one looks at a picture with their eyes 2 inches away...well except for the techno geeks who are more concerned with meaningless charts than actual art.

Thanks so much as I recently resumed photography after 25 year pause, due to health, & am using 20 MP Micro 4/3 which a number of posters online dismiss as good for nothing more than 8 x 10 inch print.

your point is the point!! besides de d700, the canon 5d classic is is the same boat, awesome sensor, less direct access but awesome colors, is an other old beast that must be tested, and, the best, with an adaptor, you can use all the nikkor lenses, plus pentax , contax and olympus OM lenses and old russians and sencond branded lenses from 70`s to 90`s!!!! I love both!!

Because I am trying to justify the purchase of a newer body for an amateur use and I can not find enough reasons to expend the difference between the d700 and the d4 but ISO and FPS, I just need higher ISO in some occasions, but the weight is crazy... I am considering the Sony A7sII for my markets night trips in Asia and local street pictures... I like light stuff, the D700 is light enough for me.. I love the 12mpx size, noise and colours of the old school sensors, B&W is other matter so for not huge larger prints the D700 still very useful now days in 90% of my shoots. :-)
@@jorgea.a.597 Right! The video is out now! I would tend to agree with you that the weight of the D4 is a factor to consider in itself, and here the D700 is much lighter! My love for the D4 is primarily due to its colors, but the D700 does great here as well, so I think your conclusion to stay with the D700 sounds right to me!

actually after viewing many videos on printing this is by far the most beneficial to me and i am sure to others as i was torn between choosing a z7ii and a z6ii and my deciding factor was how big would i be able to print with a 26 mb sensor or if i should wait for a 30 mb nikon

Thank you Vennie! Yes, I think 24MP is more than plenty for most applications. The only exceptions I can think of is: (1) if you want to crop a lot, (2) if your images for some reason will be viewed in (what I call) unnatural viewing distance, i.e. close up or (3) if you do some very detailed editing of your images where the added resolution helps your work. For most of us "I'll post it on Instagram" photographers, 24MP is more than plenty!
12MP is adequate if you don't crop or do a little bit of cropping, once you feel the need for heavy cropping, 12MP will fall short no matter what.
Agreed - heavy cropping with 12MP falls short very quickly.
I feel 24 mpxl is the sweet spot. I have a D810 and it's often way too much for my needs. I'm planning to get the Z6 II.

Happy holidays Frederik. Always nice to watch your casts. For your audience' information, I still use D700 as my primary camera for artistic images. As a professional photographer, I consider D700 as one of the most valuable camers to work with. You've explained the reasons why, no need to mention them. What I want to emphasize to your audience is the fact that they dont need to "follow"what companies' marketing department is promoting. Afterall photography is been here for almost two centuries and past photos justify that it doesn't matter how modern the equipment i. Photography is about how we capture the light and at this point, D700 does a pretty awesome job! Merry Christmas to all!

I bought a D800 and later a D750. Recently I got a Z7 with appropriate lenses... and still love to use my D3 and D700 and Nikkor 24-70 of wedding shoots days. I still cannot get the quality and colors of those days using the newer bodies.

@@frederikboving - Some have said that the Z50 or even the Z6 would be a better choice for the money than the Z5. The Z5 has lately been pushed hard by Nikon perhaps because of poor sales?
The Z7 does have some qualities I love. Especially for wildlife, macro work and sports. But for portraits or low ambient lighting... go with the 2008 bodies I say.
@@lescobrandon3047 Right. I think I will stay clear of Z50 (APS-C). I have felt the difference moving to FF and just like when you taste good wine, you don't want to go back to where you came from. The Z6 is tempting, but a bit pricey relative to the Z5 IMHO. I find the Z5 is a D750 sensor in a Z6 body, minus the top LCD but plus the IBIS and at a price that is very attractive. And I think the Z5 reviews were positive. Yes, Nikon is a financially stressed company. Sales are horrible and they probably will need to sell of their camera division. The D780 shows they are trying to find sales with low investments where ever they can. Makes me sad. My first camera was a D40.
The sweet spot is ~16 Megapixels. (plus or minus 4, ergo we still have 20 and 12 megapixel flagships to this day)

How was the image applied to the MDF. My hobby, Frederik, is woodworking and to combine my photography with this type of imaging would be very neat. Is it a public process or is it proprietary? Thanks for your work here. The prime argument FOR the increased resolution is what we saw in magazine reproduction. If your background isn't "blurry" but your cover image is a detail of a 1 cm bug, focus-stacked from 80 to 100 images showing every tiny hair and filling 2/3 of an A4 cover size, then in order to raster the image with the resolution needed, we would scan the image to reproduce at least 0.75 mpx PER SQUARE INCH OF FINAL REPRODUCTION SIZE. This would render a file for print in CMYK of roughly 70 mpx, roughly 50 mpx in RGB. Of course you can render a less precisely rastered image to any size you want, just be aware that compromises are being made that in some reproduction realities are not acceptable. That's the justification for medium format whether in analog film or digital sensor. I bought a D750 to do product photography(woodwork and furniture mostly) on the retirement side with sell sheet (something to place in the clients hand) preparation graphic work offered as well. I purchased my D850 because the resolution of the D750 wasn't high enough for some of the graphics work I needed to do.
Hi James! Thank you for sharing all this! I have used a Danish print service named Monsterprint for the MDF part. The link is here: www.monsterprint.dk/fotoprint/fotoprint-pa-traeplade.html - unfortunately it is in Danish! I have to underline that I have no relation to this company (sponsorship or the like) other than we use them as a sub-contractor and they did good printing to MDF. What their process is and how they do it? I have no idea, but I would imagine that vacuuming somehow is part of the process as there is absolutely no bubbles or wrinkles on the image - it is pressingly flat and even!
It's the same thing if you look at a Monet painting up close it's just a bunch of blobs of color but when you stand back it turns into water lilies or whatever he had painted you can't stick your face in something viewing distance is everything.

The d700 has been said to have the best output of any Nikon. Especially when you pair it with the 180 2.8 lens.

In my experience sharpness is related to focus, aperture and plenty of light rather than a camera setting. So I would give attention to those before worrying about a sharpness setting. YMMV of course.
You can easily print 40x60 sharp as a pin by running your photo's from this camera through gigapixel AI. You could even go larger if you prefer. Today's software for sharpening, noise, and enlargement allows the D700 to compete even with the best mirrorless camera's on the market today.
Yep. The point that I try to get across in this video is that you don't need to do the resolution enhancement of the "low res" image, provided that you have a "normal" viewing distance. Most of us, when presented with a large picture, will naturally take a step back to take it all in.
The largest I dared to print with my D300, which I think has the same 12mp sensor as the D700, was 12"x18". Those look nice.

I'm a little confused here Alan. The D300 is a Dx body and the D700 is an Fx body. Clearly not the same sensor. I believe the D700 and the D3s share the same sensor however. In any case, I shot a D300 for many years and really liked it. I considered it a pro Dx body. The only thing it seemed to have difficulties with was with reddish-purple colors It ruined some of my cactus flower photos......

I have two d700's and I feel no desire to own any other digital camera. Combined with shooting medium format film for my "serious" shots, what else could I need? @@JamesEricGardener well, I have a bunch of lenses for different things. I have some D lenses for when I need autofocus. But my best lens is Zeiss 35mm planar T F/2. It's pricey but amazing. It depends on what you are going to be doing. If you are going to be shooting portraits, then i recommend 105mm 2.5 ais. It is inexpensive but sharp and good 3d rendering. Paired with a 35mm you have environmental and isolated portraits covered. Some might recommend 85mm for portraits, but 85 to me is a little too safe. Meaning it can be used for general photography as well, but a 105 really gives that isolated portrait magic. Just my opinion. A 50mm is a very versatile lens but for me a 35mm is still better overall.

It should work! The D300 has the same resolution albeit on a smaller sensor, so you should be fine printing large as well. What you cannot do (and what I suggest you should not do) is walk very close to the print and study the details, i.e. "violate" the normal viewing distance for a large print. If you do so, then the shortcomings of the 12MP resolution will start to show.

Fantastic video, and gorgeous prints ! I'm curious how much they all cost you and how you made a profit or even got the commission to do them. I still love and use my D700 and D3s. I actually saw a D700 over a year ago on ebay for under €400 with less than 1000 clicks on it - snapped it up and when it arrived it was as if it had just been opened as a brand new camera - super luck. So now I've got a backup for whenever my current D700 dies (I'd imagine many years from now) The D3s is still going strong with 675000 clicks although the shutter was replaced at 635,000 - Im hoping for well over a million clicks. They don't make cameras like that anymore ..
Wow! 400 EUR for an almost new D700 - that must be the deal of the decade! The print shown in the video on MDF is around 180 EUR a piece - of course you get a better price when you order several, but for a single print this is what we paid. For smaller prints I normally set my price at double the printing costs, but I reduce the margin as the size increases, otherwise the prices in my mind become a bit too high. The sale was made through our network (a friend of a friend) and we sell most via such channel although we have an internet shop as well. I think the trick is to get your pictures "out there" in peoples homes, and then their friends will naturally ask "where did you get that from?" and then you suddenly have a self escalating marketing channel, provided of course that people like what you make.
@@frederikboving Very cool, thanks for the information - yes I think word of mouth and selling at a reasonable price to get your advertising built in so to speak seems like a good plan. The photo's and prints look super awesome to me, so I wouldn't doubt yourself on that front, plus the fact that you can offer bespoke images is a great selling point. I've owned many nikons, buying them used cheap from Japan when I see a deal and for me they all have their own personality, for example the much underrated D610 produces better images ,better colour and character to the D750 (which is also a super camera), also feels better in the hand and if you wait, you can pick one up for peanuts as nobody really wants them - but man the images in the right hands are just superb - check out the flickr page for it.. - that's just one example. Being a self confessed nikon fanboy I resolved to own each model at some stage or another - buying great second hand models that have barely been used - they are out there, you just have to wait for the right one, and the right money ! @@hazybrain7 Thank you for subscribing! I have the D750 and I absolutely love it for low light shooting. The AF can literally see in the dark! You have to try it to believe it! I have always stayed clear of the D610 as I thought it was a D750 with a budget AF system and an older EXPEED processor, but of course you need to factor the price into all that. And here the D610 seems ridiculously cheap - around 250 USD on e-bay! Point taken!
I agree, d700 is still relevant and sufficient and thats why i bought 2 units, in 2020....never bother to look for other latest n greatest...12mpx is the sweet spot and more than enough.

Verry informative video. Do you know if merging three 12mp shots with this camera (taken by a super sharp 50mm prime) could provide excellent detail for acrylic prints?
Uh my experience with acrylic print is very limited so I am not able to give a qualified answer unfortunately.
What lenses do you use with your D700? I have some older Nikkor lenses which may have been autofocus film glass, I get good shots but I want to ensure I am getting the best out of it. I only bought the camera a couple of months back so still learning.
Hi Cary, I use a lot of lenses for the D700, but my favorite is the 180 mm F/2.8. But I also have a 24 mm, 50mm, 85 mm, 105mm, 135mm and some zooms like the 35-70mm. So it really depends on what you shoot. I can recommend the Nikon lens simulator imaging.nikon.com/lineup/lens/simulator/ to try out what pros/cons there are shooting at different focal lengths! Hope this helps, otherwise get back to me and I will see what I can do.

@@gashead2 I would say yes, but I have never tested AIS lenses against modern lenses. Some say the AIS lenses are the sharpest ever made, but I have no facts to support this. If you are a few months into photography only, it sounds to me like you have plenty of good glass for now. I would study light (@davidnorton) or composition or the like, rather than worrying about glass for now. I think that will lift your photography much more than a new lens. But with that said, if you got money burning in your pocket, new glass is always a good way to spend it, as glass maintains its value so much better than a camera body.
I do know a great deal about printers as I've done professional output for 2 decades. Assuming a great quality image all you need do is ask the output provider what resolution the media requires. Example 200 PPI pixels per inch. Divide the image pixel width by the required resolution. 4,000 pixels divided by 200 pixels per inch is 20 inches wide for best quality on a 200 PPI media.

I have no ambition to challenge your 20+ years of experience with printing, but would the logic in what you describe be that the larger you print, the more resolution you need? The agenda I am pushing is that larger print means larger viewing distance and hence you can print large with the same resolution as you can print small, provided the small print is sharp.
@@frederikboving I think you did a good job, micro 4/3, ASP-C, Full Frame and Medium Format all have the place when it comes to print resolution based on their respective sensor resolution. The fact that you produced a good print proves that, I simply provided the math that anyone can use.
Now depending on your quality requirements it does get more technical but your post is correct and I agree with your concepts.

@@frederikboving The viewing distance concept is a solid practice. Where you can get into trouble some times is a repurposed print item. A client wants a 25 foot banner of photographic quality that they'll use twice. Once with a minimum viewing distance of 50 foot and later at a gathering with a viewing distance of 3 foot. Ochh! That's some huge file and long print time but still cheaper than 2 banners.

12mp is doable, but don’t even consider the sub par d700. you’ll get better mileage, viewfinder coverage, low light performance and still supported card system with a d610.
Value for money wise I find the D700 hard to beat, provided you find a good copy.

For high megapixel camera, besides the ability to crop, it also has higher dynamic range to recover shadows and highlights when we screw up the shot.

Hi Chang, I think the pixel count is not related to the dynamic range. In general I find that the younger a camera is, the better the dynamic range. I think it is because the technology develops, so the sensors get better and better in terms of dynamic range, but I am no expert. In terms of what dynamic range is and how to measure it, many think that the ability to crank up the ISO to some crazy values is the key. I think it is more related to the cameras ability to capture details in the dark and the bright areas of a motive AT THE SAME TIME. This is the key: at the same time. DXOMARK are not exactly very informative on the subject: www.dxomark.com/glossary/dynamic-range/ to say the least. But it is my impression that they measure the dynamic range in terms of stops, i.e. how many stops can the sensor span across at the same time and till preserve details in both the bright and the dark parts without going blown out in the highs or black in the shades. Hi Dominic, in my experience the magic happens as a combination of the lens and camera. And it is very difficult to test the cameras under the same ambient lighting conditions with the same lenses, so it often becomes a more subjective assessment of what works the best. I have seen others praise the IQ from the D600 sky high, so it just goes to show how many opinions there are out there.

@@frederikboving Yeah, blew my Z7II + FTZ budget for it. The lens and sensor are good. Color science is close to the Nikon, hence I like it. Good SOOC family snapshots, print via the app.
The body is another story. I have to tape over the Mic & Speakers to avoid the dust issue, plus the diopter dial to lock it down. The ON/OFF button is a PITA that often switch to the C instead of the S position. It really needs a hot shoe/hand grip and I chose the latter. EVF isn't that suitable for eyeglass and left-eye dominant photographer, like me (maybe spoiled by the D3 design).
Slip on (using felt inside) lens cap will eventually loose the grip, thus some owners are substituting rubber slip on or hood hat. To use the common pinch type cap, the hood needs to be replaced with something else. Most Nikon flashes are compatible (safe triggering voltage) in Auto and Manual mode.
Only got it a few weeks ago and need more shooting time to know what it is capable of.
@@bfs5113 Wow! That sounds like a lot of quirky stuff for a 4K USD camera! I read the DPreview, and like you they praise the lens and sensor (especially the lens) and then they go on and on about all the quirky stuff they have found during their work with the camera. So I guess you have touched the stars (Leica) but also found out that there is a practical side to reaching nirvana, other than a much lighter wallet. I think I will stay with my D700 / D750 for now and see if the Z6 II should drop in price anytime soon. Take care BFS - and stay safe + happy holidays!

Amen. I couldn't agree with you more. 35 mm film has a relative resolution of 12-16 MP. I have some super megapixel cameras (Nikon 810 and 850, Sony A7R II) but they only give me larger files that clog up my drives. I don't use them very often. Most of my photos go on websites at a shocking 1-2 MP, and they look good enough in that setting. I can print anything I want to with a 12-16 MP camera.
Ha-ha! Amen! Funny you have the A7RII also, that was my biggest disappointment when it comes to image quality: that 42MP did not do anything for IQ at all... I love the A7RII as a video camera - I use it for all my videos, but hardly ever for photos.
@@frederikboving I hardly use my Sony cameras. They are just not as enjoyable to use when compared to Nikon or Canon. I used to do a lot of video work, but now I mostly do stills. I’m retired from my real job so I can pick and choose-and I like taking photos more than shooting video.

Tested the D700 against the D500, different sensor size so had to use different focal lengths to get the same angle of view. So on my computer screen very hard to tell which pic is the D700 or D500. Only when I zoom in very close you can see the resolution difference. Besides that the colors from the D700 were actually nicer and more vivid, so straight from the camera I mean. In LR I could make the pics equally vivid. D700, what a great machine😀

I'm looking to buy between the D700 and D600/610, and I just can't decide. The difference in prices is not much and seems like either I go for D700 colors or D600 resolution, can't have both I guess. Any input from your side to solve this dilemma is very welcome.
You have found one point of differentiation: resolution. I would bring another differentiator to the table: age. The D700 is a much older camera than the D610. My favorite example is Live View, that I find to be cumbersome and quirky on the D700, but - although I do not have the D610 - probably is a much more user friendly version on the D610. Just to give an example, the D700 has two different versions of Live View that you have to choose from. Another thing that bothers me with the D700 is that the viewfinder does not have 100% viewfinder coverage, meaning that I cannot see exactly the framing that I am shooting. The D610 has 100% coverage, and that is really nice if you frame your images carefully before you hit the shutter. And then the D610 has video, which the D700 does not. The D610 is smaller and 200 grams lighter, and it has a slightly larger rear LCD. You can find the full list here: cameradecision.com/compare/Nikon-D700-vs-Nikon-D610 - so I would say that if you like a modern camera that gets the job done, then the D610 is probably the better option. If you like a camera that produces beautiful images, that sometimes looks like paintings, and does so with a small file (12mp) that any computer can handle, then the D700 is your choice. It is a bit like choosing between an old car that will bring a smile on your face, or a newer car that just takes you from A to B comfortably. Hope this helps.

Hello , I now own a Nikon d700 and a sigma 35-70 it was only £30 and my lens wont auto focus (when I press the shutter halfway) am I doing something wrong in the menus or is It just my cheap £30 lens?

Hi Will, bottom left on the front of your camera there is a button that can be in C, S or M. Make sure it is NOT in M. If your lens has the letters "AF" in its name, then it should work. It can also be that the configuration has switched the auto focus off for the shutter - press the button named "AF-ON" instead (sits to the left of the rear command dial) and see if it focuses when you hit that button instead.

sweet spot: 24Mp, coping with anthing larger than f8; 60Mp, anthing larger than f11. This is just theory. In reality, depends on how fussy & cheap the client is.
