  • IN THIS VIDEO I show you a simple way to test your sensors, then show you where you shouldn't place them..... and then I encourage you to DO IT ANYWAY. :-D
    THIS METHOD IS EASY ... but keep in mind; .. you have to have sensors! There is NO WAY to bypass them. For me, mounting them up top is MUCH easier than the original spot. No alignment issues, no worries. But this is my choice. YOU can do what you think is right, but this will help you replace your sensors and get your garage door closing properly.
    Thanks to those that liked the video or subscribed! I have more fix-it videos on the way!
    I do mostly Disney videos.. but I fix things as well!! After suffering through the other videos here regarding this.... one using an oscilloscope? .. the other a circuit board? really guys?, I decided to post my own.
    In clear English, layman terms (like "Cut" and "Splice") and TO THE POINT. *FOR EXPERIMENTING ONLY!* ((::wink::wink::nudge::nudge:: know what I mean? ;-) )) Do the right thing and hire a professional to ... splice a couple wires and charge you $140 to do it!! :-)

    Finally, someone with a logical, simple way to test sensors without taking down the unit. Thank you for recording and sharing this. I am tired of garage door repairman taking a guess - process of elimination on my dollar! I just saved $600 and was told it was most likely the logic board because that's what they have been seeing, and I might as well get a new unit, because the logic board has been on back order for months. I asked, is there a way to check the sensors separately, and was told we cannot because the logic board isn't recognizing the sensors. SAME excuse from two different companies. UGH!!!!!!! My sensors work, thanks to this test video, all I did was replaced all the wiring that leads to the unit, and BAM! It all works. $10 worth of 100 ft of OEM Liftmaster sensor wiring. However, I am out the $65 x 2 service calls from the two repairman (lazy or incompetent) looking to make the company MONEY!

      It's just crazy what some of these companies charge, and take guesses at . I suppose it's how they make a living. I'm glad UA-cam gives all of us a place to where we can help each other with small DIY projects. I'm happy to hear it helped and you only had to do a little "snip! snip! snip!" to get it done! ;-) Have a great day. - Dan in Carlsbad CA

    Thank you all! I did this video 4 years ago and my sensors still work great! No snow, rain, cold, heat, sun, earthquakes.. or carelessness, will misalign them now. I HAVE TO CONFESS HOWEVER: the main reason I put the sensors up top is because I like to pull an Indiana Jones when I run out my garage door. I press the button in my garage and RUN... If the sensors are 6" off the floor, they catch the whip on my side and it ruins the entire experience! So with this, I can roll under the door... and I even have time to grab my fallen fedora at the last second! 😀😉😅

      I just had a new chamberlain installed about 6 mos ago. But I noticed they used my old wires and spliced in the sensors to that wire. My wire is about 25 years old too. You think it could be that? I know its not the sensors because I did what this guy suggested and the door opens and closes fine. I finally just taped the sensors together!

    I have a two car garage, with two Sears/Craftsman openers that were in the house when I bought it, 25 years ago. I've updated the openers with rolling code remotes but otherwise have done nothing to them. One of the garage doors has sensors, and the other doesn't. The one that has sensors is the one I use most often, and it's recently given me a little bit of intermittent problem with closing, which I have attributed either to the sensors themselves, or the wiring to the sensors, but a little bit of jiggling with the wiring and sensor alignment has kept it working.
    Looking at this video has made me curious, and I'm gonna check out the difference in wiring between the two openers because one of them has never had sensors since I've lived in this home, at least not in the normal location, nor in any other visible part of my garage, and that opener works fine.

      Nice! I hope you find the Issue. Likely a loose wire. I'm bummed Sears went out of business... at least in every city around me. Hands down Craftsman tools are the best ever built and at Sears, you could shop for them and hold them in your hands. You can still buy them online and Stanley/Black & Decker owns the brand now, but having them in-hand while shopping was great.

  • @HowToDoitright

    So I have a weird problem that my garage door keeps closing even if somebody comes in between the sensor, it will not stop and keeps closing. I see it as a safety issue in case a kid comes in the middle. The door will not stop. I do have sensors and they sent something as I can feel a little hesitation on the door, but it keeps on closing what could be the issue?

    • @DisneyDan
      @DisneyDan  4 місяці тому

      If your sensors are working (you can test using my method), then this issue is above my pay grade. :-) Hold out your hands as it closes and carefully grab the bottom of the door, as it lowers. It SHOULD start backing up. As it should if anything is in the way (I wouldn't recommend using a child to test this! ;-) ) . It is weird because if the sensors aren't working, it shouldn't close at all.
      One idea... maybe your door button INSIDE the garage is stuck? Try disconnecting that. You can override the entire thing by holding down that button you have in the garage (not on the unit, likely next to the door that goes into your home). So if that is somehow defective or has the wires crossed, maybe that's it? But back to 'weird', if that's it, your door shouldn't even open. Maybe try the same thing with the sensors by disconnecting them temporarily to see what happens. You'll likely get an error with that however.
      Like I said, this is above my pay grade... meaning I'm not a door tech, but I am a computer tech. If all still doesn't work properly, you may have to call a professional or if it's cheaper, install an entirely new unit yourself... if you're so inclined.
      Good Luck!

      I wish! They don't just complete the circuit, they confirm their own existence before closing or opening it. It's really strange and believe me, I tried. You have to have the sensors. I've seen workarounds making your own computer board hack, but it's SO much easier just to buy the sensors. and again, makes no sense, I know. - Dan

    Just curious has anyone had their garage door open or close randomly after doing this by any chance? I’ve had it do it twice now since doing this little trick and I’m hoping it’s something else causing it. It’s not the remote I’ve disconnected that ability.

    • @DisneyDan
      @DisneyDan  5 місяців тому

      Hey there! Yeah... having your door open by itself in the middle of the night, or whenever... would be a huge issue. In the 4 years I posted this, I've had nothing like that or heard of it. Many years ago I did find an issue with a neighbor who's garage door opener somehow opened mine a few times, accidently. Which seems impossible. I mean there's a bajillion code combos.
      Personally, I'd double check your wires from the door opener on your wall that you can press to open, or disconnect it. Then new batteries in the remotes, then be sure the remotes aren't in your pocket ;-)
      Another thing, you can set your garage door opener sensitivity AND where it ends up stopping, using a couple set screws on it. Look that up for your model. Maybe it's closing too hard into the floor, then opens itself for safety? Seems a stretch, but just another thing to test. Then ... maybe the sensors are defective? Take a week to completely disconnect the sensors and open and close manually (a pain, I know) and if it still does it, then there may be a sensor issue. check those wires as well of course.
      Then with the sensors, does any random light get into them? a window or garage light? Some have put electrical tape between the sensor eyes. Putting them together, then taping. One even used a toilet paper roll. :-)
      Good luck finding the issue!

As well, but SURE nothing is in the way of your sensors and be sure they don't wiggle when you open your door.... be sure the screws are tight on the sensors. You may also want to clean the clear lenses on each. Good luck to you!

    I just had a garage technician out because my garage door will not go down unless I hold the wall switch until its all the way down. Remotes will open it when I'm coming home but not when I'm leaving going down. Nor, will the wall switch bring it down with one push. He was in my garage for about half a minute looking at it and said it might be the sensors needed adjustment and wanted $195 to do it. He said the sensors cost $150 and he wasn't going to do a job where he made $50. Do you believe this world? I said I was going to get a second opinion.

    • @DisneyDan
      @DisneyDan  5 років тому +1

      You really just need to order sensors online like I did. they will cost you no more than $25 on Amazon.com. Just look up your model and reference that on Amazon. You can then just cut the wires on the old ones, and put these in. It's very very easy to do. You'll just have to splice the wires. Cut the old ones, use a screw driver to remove, install the new ones and if you think you can splice a wire (expose the metal wire part), and twist them together... you can do this! Just be sure to use electrical tape or plastic caps to cover the bare exposed wires you twisted together. It's truly not that hard.

    • @DisneyDan
      @DisneyDan  10 місяців тому +3

      Thank you and I know exactly why it didn't work. I had one defective sensor. I replaced them and it works perfectly. It may have looked like I had two green lights, but I didn't. The light was reflecting on the left one so it may have seemed that way.
      As well, it's NOT rigged up to omit the sensors. The sensors are connected.
      As for "code", that's for contractors doing the install. They are bound by regulations and codes. For me? I can do whatever I want in my own home. Stupid or not. IF I sell my home, then an inspector should ask to change it back, meanwhile, there's no code that doesn't allow me to do stupid installs in my own home. As for dangerous? For who? I can stand under the door and if it comes in contact with a cardboard box, it will back off because of the resistance. It's fine and works great.
      In my video I CLEARLY tell people to install the sensors the "correct" way. I did it the stupid way and it works great for ME. Have a nice day...

      @DisneyDan  3 роки тому +1

      The orange one?? Would you be referring to the lights on the sensors? If both are green and it still won't work for you, then you likely have a wire issue or you can still have defective sensors. Try connecting them with shorter wires directly to the garage door opener... just like I do here, and see if they work then. If wiring isn't the problem, and you have new sensors, then something would be wrong with the electronics in your opener. Good luck!

    Removing your photoelectric sensor from their required location is NOT wise. It's a $40 part that will prevent a much more expensive problem in the future.

      It's not a required location if you're the homeowner doing the work yourself. At least not in CA here for a private residence. It's our home to do what we want inside. If we were building a brand new garage , then installing electrical, then it "may" be required.

    Luv it cut that crap out. This is The only real solution. Brand new $10,000 garage door and opener nothing but problems. Design just to give the installer unlimited service call money. One time a spider web blocked it but it's always something even the lights are green and it doesn't work. I did basically the same thing though I used a bar instead of tape with the bolts to kind of hold them down they make that plumbing tape or you can use I happen to have some electrical mounting brackets that fit perfectly but you know that thing on the back of car stereo with the holes in it to strap it to the body that works. Anything you can fabricate with holes with the exact spacing and it could be really sturdy and this is what I did. I hate these stupid sensors

    Sunlight hits one sensor preventing the door from closing. I rather have an actual fix over what your video shows

    • @DisneyDan
      @DisneyDan  Рік тому +2

      That's a great idea! Try moving your sensor back... i.e., more left or right, until it's out of the sun. As well, you can move your sensors UP more on the wall. They don't have to be inches from the floor to work properly. I had the same issue with the sun and my solution works perfectly for me and I don't recommend it, as said on my video. 😉😊 It's been 4 years and I've had no issues at all. Good luck :-)

    Or idk you could have just replaced the defective sensors and left them where they are supposed to be installed.

    • @DisneyDan
      @DisneyDan  Рік тому

      True but that creates it's own difficulties. Installation is touchy because you have to line up the sensors perfectly, then like with my garage, the sunsets hit those sensors and screw them up. Regardless, I'm with you... you can do that or however you feel like doing it. for me, my sensors are high and dry in the garage. No rain. No snow. No lights. No bumping them... No worries. :-)

      The sensors cause more problems than they are worth. With sunlight hitting them wrongly and with dumb things set in the garage in front of them, and at times them just going out of alignment, it just didn't work well for me personally. You're welcome to do it any way you wish. The video just shows how to test them at the unit and as noted, I'm not responsible for the stupid things people do. I chose to be stupid and I'm good with the way I installed it. :-)

    • @DisneyDan
      @DisneyDan  Рік тому +1

      Hi there! Yes. It will stop when the door touches anything. IF you leave the eyes where they are , those eyes don't see your car until your TIRES cross the eyes which means the door can still hit your hood or trunk. :-) But yes, most modern garage doors will open or stop if they touch something. Try it yourself!

    You may think homeowners don't have to worry about regulations, the problem is if you go to sell your home, and an inspection is done, you can in fact find yourself in hot water for something like this. Just do it the right way, why would you want to bypass safety protocols?

    • @DisneyDan
      @DisneyDan  3 роки тому +3

      No one is going to get in trouble for doing this and the garage door will still reverse if coming in contact with something, as noted. Using this type of system doesn't require a permit from any state agency so it's not a legal issue. Saying someone would be in hot water for this is like saying the same if someone decides not to use a Smoke Alarm in their home. It's a great idea and I wouldn't go without one, but no agency is going to harass you regarding changes you make to it.. any home inspection is done by paid services not the state and if they find it, it's an easy fix if it's requested by a buyer. Thank you.

    • @DisneyDan
      @DisneyDan  Рік тому +3

      Not true. UL325's purpose is to regulate the sale of the GDO to ensure "... that the operator shall be provided with a means for connection of an external entrapment-sensing device". It doesn't not regulate how a consumer chooses to install these devices in their home. As well, if you're a garage door tech, then YOU are bound by state regulations ensuring that YOU install the devices in a particular way. US , the home user, can install or modify these devices as we choose without regulation or code... These codes are set up to protect the general public mostly in public places. For the home, manufacturers must only provide us the means and UL 325 regulates that.
      The only time it may become an issue is when we sell our homes and IF a home inspector notes it, which of course, is a quick fix. I'd put them back anyway if I sold my home.
      There's no laws against being an idiot with devices installed in my own home and as stated in my video, please be an idiot at your own risk. This works well for me personally and I'm not breaking any laws doing it. Just the law of natural selection if it ever kills me. :-)
