I love how Lisa LIng interviews. She is non-judgmental, humble and kind. You can tell she made everyone comfortable with the story she wanted to tell.
Well said! She seems easy to talk to and very kind. She listens and hears and asks questions that allow the person to tell their story in safety.
I was a teen mom. Less that ideal but not the end of the world. Finished school. Now I'm an RN and mother of a college grad

I was a teen mom and had 4 children by 22. Started college at 34 while working full time and I am a licensed social worker and still married to my hs sweetheart and father to my children. If it wasn't for him, I could never have fullfilled my dream of higher education and my dream career. It is the exception. I was tired of being so poor. But, I also see my friends who were married older than us and more than half are divorced. Just happens who you marry and the willingness to work on sustaining a marriage. I know others may have big issues and can't continue in a marriage. Kathleen
@jollymollyramram9702 I had my husband as support. He was 19 when we married. And, you are correct that many other people don't have that even. I'm a social worker and see so much dysfunction in a person's psychosocial. It's hard to understand how some people even function at a level to survive. It's hard for me to pat myself on the back most times. But, I am a very strong and persistent person who came from a home with an alcoholic parent. I see so much worse in other families. Thanks. Older men need to hold younger men to accountability when they create children. That's the only way young men are going to change and be responsible fathers.

I understand teen pregnancy but not the idea that every time a 17 year old is pregnant they necessarily need to have a child. There are other perfectly acceptable options on the table.
The older men are doing the same thing the younger men are doing.

Yeah, I had to skip past the first 20 minutes because it was like watching the first episode all over again. I was sad we didn't get to actually see the two sisters from the last episode, I was especially interested in the younger sister who took the initiative to get on birth control right after her baby was born

The one who actually created a win-win situation, the child is happy and well looked after and she can also grow and mature is Sophie. She seems to understand things at a different level.
I know, and what's crazy is Sophie actually came from an affluent family, so money wasn't the issues, but she clearly understood she couldn't go on to do what she wanted to do as far as going to college Etc .
I have a hard time understanding why the other girls with zero money and zero help decided to chose to keep their kids ???
You don't NEED to keep this baby. You do have options 🤦♀️
@@mariec3527 @blue8710 i think we're forgetting here that the fact that sophie came from an affluent family also gave her better options when it came to adoption, if you think about any of the other babies of the other families portrayed getting even the remote chance of being adopted by such a nice and affluent family as teo was, those chances are slim to none. they would most likely be placed in foster care and be children of the system, being passed around until they turned 18. the fact that sophie's family was wealthy gave her the privilege of choosing, for 'certain', a better life for her child, and that's something we don't talk about and acknowledge enough.
I wonder if the other girls even was told about open adoption being an option for them. The other girls probably thought they would never see their kids again.
I think Latonya answered why she, along with many other teen moms, kept her child. "That's the person who's gonna love you, and be there when you need...". They don't grasp the reality, and they are young enough to have magical thinking, that this baby is going to supply all their emotional needs.
Sophie is selfish, spoiled and privileged.

Yes. A simulated experience. They still haven't made it to the expenses part. Diapers, formula, and whatnot. A teenager could never fathom what it truly means to be a mother.

I had my son at 17 years old and immediately got on birth control after I had him. There was no way in hell I was going to risk getting pregnant again.
Right like girl huh 🤔🤣 She really blew me talmbout she still was gonna be able to do what she wanted when the baby comes.
When the grandmother states "you gotta do what you gotta do" when referring to using food stamps, just shows how little her family cares about showing teenagers how important it is to not get pregnant when you're a teenager. Everyone makes mistakes but after Latonya had her first baby, she clearly didn't care as to whether she got pregnant again or not. Young ladies NEED to be taught how little many teenage boys don't care about getting girls pregnant and helping them financially. This is why so many people end up living in poverty.

I was shocked too. Those are the numbers you’d expect from a much poorer country. Thankfully the numbers have dropped since this was produced.
When I was in high school nobody was having babies. Some people had abortions, but 0 teen moms. I live in Ontario, Canada, so maybe it's just bad in the states 🤷🏼♀️

The couple that adopted were very nice, they let her be apart of the babies life. ❤
They technically didn't "let" her. Agreeing to an open adoption, you have to adhere to certain guidelines such as number of visits, frequency, duration, all of it prior to approval of the adoption. Granted, each open adoption is different. & I agree with you, they're still very nice people. Seems they live close, & no matter the minimum amount of time Sophie is scheduled to spend with him, it does seem they have an open door policy, where she's allowed over as often as she'd like.
My brother has 2 adopted children, 1 open & 1 closed. The closed one is just that. The birth mother selected the adoptive parents (my brother & SIL) but has had no contact or information since finalization.
For the open adoption, they are required to take my nephew on 1 annual visit to the birth mother. She lives out of state several hours away, & there is an organized gathering for all the birth parents & adoptive parents, along with the children, of course, to get together. They make the visit part of a family vacation, stopping off to see his birth mother before going to the beach, or some other family getaway.
I often worry about how these 2 differences in one family will affect them each when they're older. The 2 adoptees also have an older brother biologically born to my brother & SIL. We almost lost both the baby & my SIL when she was in labor & a hysterectomy was necessary to save her life. Adoption was a beautiful way for them to give siblings to their 1st born & to have the family they've always dreamed of.
@@MK-285 yes, 🥲 I understand the ends and outs of adoption. Well they will be family, at the end of the day, we all are. I suspect they will have their own feelings about it, and want to know who they came from, as for as "blood related mattes", which is understandable. That is a beautiful story, and thank God she made it, sounds like a close call 😬. Seems like you have a nice family 😊 💖.
Love and the word of God will make all the difference.

@annmcdonald7713 well as I'm sure you're correct because every situation may b different, in my brother's case, they cannot.
@MK-285 legal there are no laws to stop any adoptive parents from closing an adoption. Bio parents have absolutely no legal rights to the children they give up. Not a single right. So your brothers situation is only a choice. Just Google adoption laws
My daughter was teen mom, she did wonderful job and is now married to an awesome man.
That girl with the 2 babies had a younger sister that also had a baby. She was living in the home with the girl and her boyfriend. I wish they would have given an update on her as well.
They did. They broke up.
I completely understand. I got pregnant at 14 and back in my day in Texas they kicked me out of school when they found out. They said I was a bad example for other kids . I'm 62 now

Sofie, I felt the same way. I was not prepared for my parents to raise my child as their own, with me also still in the house. My daughter is now 23 and getting married.

Sophie not only showed great love to her son by giving him up for an open adoption, but she showed great love for herself. I’m sure her decision was very difficult, but in my opinion, made the correct choice.

I was so emotional watching what an incredible story.
You like to believe that adoption is perfect but those kids grow up feeling all type of ways and literally most end up effing up because of it. It’s almost like they feel they aren’t good enough for the life the adopted family gives because they come from their mom. Some end up bypassing this but it’s traumatic for the child the entire childhood

Man does this bring back memories. I was 17 when I gave birth. It was the hardest day of my life. I looked at my newborn son and promised him he would never struggle like I did. He would never want for anything. I was going to prove I could do it. I worked 2 jobs and made sure he had everything. Dad took off. So no child support. But I figured it all out. By 23 I bought my first home. Owned my vehicle and was working my way up the line in 2 careers. He was well taken care of with no help from the government or the father. This just kills me to watch. I didn't even know where to look at the ultrasound.
this is great but how are you? it takes a lot of sacrifice to work two jobs and raise a child. people need help.
That's great you did it on your own. But for those who need help there is nothing wrong with forcing the dad to support financially through child support. Or taking government assistance for a few years.
It would be great if you started a program, so others can learn how you did it, so they can do it too.

I thinked the state should go after the fathers of this kids for support to lessen the burden on govt. .. there are so many changes that our govt should do when it comes to giving assistance.. just saying. One unwanted pregnancy is understandble but another one??
They do. If your on assistance in my state they require you to give the dad name and they make the dad take a DNA test. Once paternity is established they put the father on child support. Regardless if mom wants to or not. Love it. It holds the man responsible and don’t put the burden on the state.
This is a true example of education and class difference. Sophie & LaTonya prove what opportunity and support cam do to change the outcome of your life. You see how mature Sophie is compared to LaToya.
And yet Sophie dropped out of college because of the loss she feels for her son. Latonya is a nurse who went through trials and came out on top.
It's a full-time job maintaining that Portland image. Dreads, beads, crochet scarves, patched clothing, bohemian grunge decor. 🤘

With ebt she should also be getting WIC which gives formula and extra for the baby. I received WIc from the time I was 6 months and received food for myself then switched to the baby!!
I'm sorry but Brianna getting pregnant at 14, what type of parent allows their 12 year old daughter to have a boyfriend!! To see what she was going through having a child at 15 and then to have another one soon after !!!!
