The golden ball is a reference to fight club, stair scene is from Jacob's Ladder, taking off the shoe was from No Country for Old Men, and the driving scene is from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The scene with Denji and Katana clashing is from a Japanese horror comedy movie. Same with the scene where Denji looks horrified and Power walks up behind him

Fun and spoiler free fact! The first few minutes of the episode where Denji is dreading to walk up to the door is ACTUALLY just footage of the average Studio MAPPA employee walking to the office knowing that their schedule will be crazy due to them having animating so many high quality animes this season😌and if you pay ckose attention, you will hear them whisper "I hope that once I am done I will get enough free time to spend with my family"
The author, Tatsuki Fujimoto, is a mad-man who also loves western movies. For example in the first Vol. (I believe) Fujimoto wrote in the author's note *I love Texas Chainsaw Massacre.*
He's like Hirohiko Araki (author of JoJo's), but instead of western fashion he loves western cinema

Someone might of said it already, but in Shouen Jump there’s a group of manga called the “Dark Trio”, which is made up of CSM, JJK, and Hell’s Paradise since they have similar dark, gore themes. On top of that the three series are being animated by Mappa. From what I’ve heard the authors of JJK and CSM are fans of each other’s work.
Is Hell’s Paradise worth checking out? Haven’t heard of it but looks somewhat interesting

@@tonydigital808 Hell's paradise is really good, and it's made by one of Fujimoto's editors. I believe he did the editing work for Fire Punch, and when the series was done, he peaced out to create Hell's Paradise.

people on twitter have pointed on that pretty much every shot of the opening was a movie reference.
it was either a movie reference, a Fujimoto reference, or an anime reference lol

I'm glad they got the Big Lebowski reference in the opening credit sequence, there are number of other film references in that op e.g. pulp fiction, No Country for old men. 😀

@@Jl-qg5xz I'm well aware but this is their very first time watching a "recent" seasonal anime (iirc). Most reactors dealing with anime series usually pick at least a couple of seasonal titles to follow as they debut, but the Normies never really tried that approach (which prevented them from taking advantage of the momentum, imo). So it's really refreshing to see them start a brand new show along with the rest of the anime community. Let's hope for this to be the beginning of a new trend (so let's make sure to show them some love)! Especially since I'm sure they would *love* certain new seasonal series. Like Spy x Family.

This first episode really showcases why the manga author Fujimoto is so beloved: simple but not too simple, to the point writing with no fluff, that leaves you wanting more. He also throws you for a loop ALOT & whenever you think you can predict where the story goes, Fujimoto's like "Nope you thought wrong." As a lover of the manga i cannot wait to see the future reactions to some of the more crazy episodes later on.
The comparison to Denji and a Dog is one of the big themes in the series, it’s sad/happy/gory as hell, but absolutely heartbreaking and incredible this show is an absolute gem already, so glad your watching! 🪚🪚🔥🔥🙏🙏
Looked up how much USD Denji owed the yakuza. Bruh, if I liquidated all my life's income... I think I'd still have a rough time saving $258,037.32 in 2022. This isn't even counting living expenses or economic downturns!

Mickey is right. The OP has a LOT of references to other movies, mainly because Fujimoto, the creator, is a MASSIVE cinephile. The man, ADORES movies.

Mickey is spot on, THe author is a cinema geek so you will find many tributes in the show, also the manga panels are structured like movie storyboards

I'm so happy Mickey noticed the Lebowski reference! The intro has a bunch of movie references in it too not just that one! there's Pulp Fiction, the Ring and No Country for Old Men too!!!. I love the manga and this first episode was fantastic! the only negative I have is that they decided to slap a 3D model of chainsaw man in there for the main action sequence when everything else was so beautifully animated (and MAPPA have shown they can hand animate amazing fight sequences with JJK). It's disappointing but I'll let it slide because the story will be able to carry it past that one nitpick.
I understand what your saying but imagine it being hard to animate three moving chainsaws (2 in his hands and his head) simultaneously in 2D animation. I thought it looked decent from what I have seen.
But hey, people can't say it's carried by the animation.
It's hard to draw a chainsaw man in motion lol. unless you're ufotable.

It's funny that you mentioned Quentin Tarantino after Denji killed the Zombie Devil, because Fujimoto's works (not only Chainsaw Man) really feel like if Tarantino was a mangaka. Not to the point where it feels like a copy, I don't mean that. But Chainsaw Man really has a similar vibe most of the time to Tarantino's works if you ask me, when it comes to action, twists, how the characters interact with each other and the comedy.
The mangaka is explicitly a massive western movie fan who includes tons of references and inspiration from schlocky films.
I think you guys are the only reactors I saw who actually got the Lebowski reference with the bowling balls. Huge props!

This show is so good. After 3 episodes, it's my favorite show off all time already. It's been decades since I last was so giddy and excited by some piece of fiction. The last show I remember coming even close was Suzumiya Haruhi no yuuutsu.
Might not be everyones cup of tea, but I hope everyone finds something that gives them as much joy as this show has done for me.
Dear Mickey: You're not wrong. The mangaka of Chainsaw Man (Tatsuki Fujimoto) is a cinephile, and he's so in love with movies that every manga he drew always got that "cinematic camera shot" feel. As if he's drawing a movie. He also loves to pay tribute to movie directors and actors in his manga.
Anyways, i watch the normies since i was in highschool (now i'm 24), so believe me when i say you guys are going to LOVE this anime.
fun fact for Chris chainsaw man is actually inspired by FLCL, the author described chainsaw man as a "Wicked version of FLCL".
It is inspired by other manga like Abara and especially Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Fujimoto himself confirmed that Denji's hybrid form is inspired by Leatherface

I'm actually really glad this episode aired apparently uncensored. When an anime episode first comes out, most of the time, it's censored for broadcast on Japanese TV, and excessive blood definitely qualifies for that censorship. They remove the censorship in the Blu-Ray release. But this episode aired without any of the typical censorship you would expect.

The devils in this series is based on fear. For example: fear of chainsaw (chainsaw devil), fear of knives (Blade devil), fear of tomato (tomato devil).
The more scary the phobia/fear is, the stronger the devil. The tomato in the beginning is weak because its rare for people to fear tomatoes
