It's not all that unusual for Crime Families to be well known to the public. Falcone is roughly equivalent to what John Gotti was in New York City in the 80's. Literally EVERYONE in the city knew Gotti was the boss of the Gambino Crime Family, that he was responsible for some really terrible crimes, and that he was incredibly rich because of those crimes. But because he carefully positioned his underlings and made sure his name was never written in black and white on anything incriminating, the NYPD and the FBI could never pin anything on him directly while he was the Boss of the Family from 1983 until 1992 - when they finally managed to record incriminating statements. Prior to his conviction he was called "The Teflon Don." Gotti was loved by the people of Ozone Park, Queens - the neighborhood where he lived - often organizing carnivals and block parties and helping out the people of the neighborhood when they were down on their luck. So the news proclaiming the ascendance of a new crime boss on the 6 o'clock news is not entirely unprecedented, and I'm sure in a city like Gothom even less so.
