How to Paint Metal Patio Chairs (Step-by-Step!!)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 лип 2024
- Do you need to paint your rusted metal patio chairs and get them looking like new? This video shows how to refurbish metal patio chairs in less than one day. It took us about 2 hours to get our chairs looking awesome. You'll need to scrape the metal with a wire brush and then use a random orbital sander. The sander helps smooth out the old paint. I used 60 grit then 120 grit. After the sanding, wash down the chair with water and a sponge. Let the chair dry and move onto the painting. I used Rust-Oleum oil rubbed bronze spray paint with primer.

I know this is an old video but THAN YOU for making this video and for making it in real time and actually talking. So many videos are sped up and just writing on the screen or are like 30 seconds long. Thank you so much. This is the only helpful video I found
Turn it upside down and paint the bottom first. That way you don’t have freshly painted surface pressing against your work surface. Also if you paint the bottom last if the paint runs you have ruined the visible top. Otherwise great video. Thanks!
Thanks Estela, you can definitely do this project. The prep is important but after you get the chair ready the painting is super easy.
I was considering buying a new set, even though my lawn furniture is only about 3 years old. Your video showed me that hey, I can do this! YAY! Thank you! Fixing instead of trashing now :)
I am working on my rusted metal balcony. I cleaned with white vinegar (leave it overnight) the rust is 90% gone. I scraped today the remaining rust with wire brush and paints are peeling off. I clean up the mess, applied rustoleum rust removal (for stubborn rust) and will check tomorrow and hopefully all rust should be gone so I can apply rustoleum combined primer and enamel. But It is a good idea to use the orbital to get a smooth finish of the surface. I am glad that you showed this video. It helps a lot. I will sand this first to get the smooth finish and clean/dry the surface.
Great for repurposing the same furniture if you want to change or keep the same color paint. Excellent easy step by step to doing this!!
I am such a visual learning...this helped a lot! I knew it was easy but this clarified the importance of 'clearing all loose partials" as well as the sweeping action...can 10 inches away..ect.
Let the projects begin!
Suzanne
can't wait to see your project, keep me posted
Thanks for taking the time to put this helpful DIY together. I was going to paint with a brush but the spray paint has a much better finish.
I’m so glad I came across this video today. I was contemplating on selling my beautiful set that really needs to be repainted. I’ve had it for years, but it is so well-made and still in such great shape just a little ugly looking your video was straightforward and so easy to follow. I’ve just changed my mind and I am going to save myself some money, and repaint Thanks so much.
Thanks for the simple video with details on products. I just purchased 4 very nice "used" matched and cushioned outdoor chairs from a ReStore near me. The metal was originally painted a dark green. Watching your process was very helpful - I know exactly what to do. Again the details (grit# & exact type of spray paint) are especially helpful!
Awesome find at the Restore, lots of good stuff there. Let me know how your chairs make out
We've got a bunch of patio chairs to paint and this video gives me a good idea on the sander, paint and the process. Thank you.
Thanks for the tips. I used enough spray paint to cover the outer visible areas. I didn’t paint inside where the cushions go bc you won’t see that area. I saved spray paint. Thanks for tips.
I found a metal table and chair set in the trash It's in good shape it just needs paint job thank you for your video
Very helpful, my patio furniture was almost identical, but joints at screws were rusted where fasteners were missing. Had to sand by hand as I don't own orbital sander. I used paint/primer combo from Rust-Oleum 2x to avoid having to coat twice.
Awesome thanks. Will do my two chairs this weekend.
Great video!! I have been thinking about spray paining 2 metal chairs I have but I was too afraid to mess it up, but after seeing how simple it seems on your video I will give it a try. Thanks!
I love your videos, the way you explain things is perfect for a leiman like myself
Thanks for the tips using the wire brush and safety using the buffer
Loved your video, especially all the helpful inputs like wood under the chair, etc...I am off to my hardware store to buy the material..thank you!
Thank you so much! Learned how and I feel confident now. Excellent video and to the point. Thanks again!
Spray paint is great and is nice and easy to use. I just finished painting a metal mesh patio table and chairs with Rust-Oleum spray paint and it came out well. However, I think I got as much paint on the tarp as I did on the metal. Rust-Oleum makes regular brush on paint that comes in a can. Next time I will try this paint with a brush and/or roller for this type of job but might use it in combination with spray paint for difficult to reach areas with a brush. I should save a little money but more importantly save time.
I love how you say “slash” .. ha, I do that, too, and don’t hear it too often ✌🏼
Love the Barbie Jeep !!! Great video
I just bought a used patio set, and thanks to you I know how to bring LIFE back to it!! Thanks again my friend for posting!!
+Ms2cute Williams awesome, keep me posted on your progress. Sometimes those old sets are built better than the new ones!
Ms2cute Williams I just purchased one today used. wish me luck!🤞
I'm going to paint my vintage off-white patio set to oiled bronze, like a pro now, thanks to you! Can't wait for the weather to warm up! Thank you!
Thanks it's helped a lot since I want to repaint my bed frame
Excellent video! I think I can do this thanks to your thorough explanation.
Thanks for sharing. I'm about to start my own using your tips.
I found this video to be my life saver. So, I bought this expensive backyard furniture. My family used to eat our summer breakfast out back. After winter, I noticed my table and chairs started to rust. I didn't want to get rid of it because I paid too much for it. Your video helped me so much to restore my yard furniture. Though you did it for chairs, I will see if you taught on how treat the table. If not, could you suggest how to restore the table? Good job!
Thank you for a great detailed tutorial! I need to fix my patio swing and this will definitely be helpful!
+claucantu100 glad it helped, love those old school patio swings in the summer
Will definitely help me on my next project. Thank you for sharing.
glad to help
Thank you. Going to do this today. Great video.
Thank you Jeff. Great Video. Like the detail on the tools. Just what I was looking for. Many Thanks
Bobi Siembieda thanks. The tools certainly make the project quicker :D
I'm upcycling a patio set. My chairs are aluminum with the plastic bands. Wasn't sure about the plastic bands on the chairs. This helped me a lot. Thank you for posting!
Yes, same for me! I have 5 patio chairs that need a refresh and I was concerned about the plastic bands, too. Good to know this product is safe for that material as well.
Great job explaininng how to paint metal patio furniture! Looking forward to watching more of your videos! Just discovered your channel!
Thank, for your amazing advice, I am planning on restoring a wine rack
Thanks for your tips. Very helpful
Great video! Just what I was looking for!
Helpful. I have ideas to repair an old glider. Now if the weather here would become nice. It's been either way too hot or stormy this summer. Maybe after this storm it will be cooler.
Wow! Someone who can explain something without dragging it all out with info that is unnecessary! Awesome job keeping the video moving. I get so disgusted with other videos that give life history and unnecessary comment and speaking in s l o o o o w w motion! Thanks!!
thank you, we feel the same way and like keeping things to the point...life is short

I’ve got 6 almost identical chairs that I’m about to redo. I was afraid to change colors from brown to black because of the plastic seat bands. But after watching your video I’m going to do it! Any update on how yours lasted would be appreciated. Thanks!
Thanks. Very helpful
Thank you, easy way to learn.
This video was so helpful! I am planning on re painting a bench tomorrow but was wondering if that brand of paint comes in different finishes other than metallic
Great video! Thanks for the helpful tip!

You rock! Thank you.
Would be great to see a before and after at the beginning and end of the clip
Great ideas Sheilah, I'm all about making things easier since I'm not getting younger for some reason :)
Do you know generally how long before they will need to be repainted using this method?
Very helpful
Thanks for this straight forward tutorial. I noticed the straps on the chair you painted. Have you ever had to tighten straps like those or have any recommendations on how to do that?
I am also going to use a table to raise it up higher to make it easier on my back.
I have a porch swing to paint. Do I need to scrap all of the paint even when it is not coming off or work only rusted parts? Thanks a lot.
Thanks. I painted old black wrought iron table and four chairs with Rust-oleum Aged Copper exterior spray paint/primer . Turned out great. Took eight spray bottles but still cheaper than purchasing new furniture.
that's my favorite paint, the aged copper...or oil rubbed bronze. It's a fun project and definitely saves money!! Thanks for sharing your success :)
What if you do have the sand machine? Can you just use the sand?
Great tips for help thanks
Glad it helped Amarjeet Kalkat
This was so helpful...I thought I couldn’t fix my chairs because of the plastic webbing.
I will try this. Very good tutorial. Nice Barbie car. 😂
A neighbor threw out 2 perfectly fine chairs except for a few small rust spots. Biking by I saw them brought them home. Thanks I hope I can find that paint here in Montreal Canada. Can I just sand by hand don’t have a fancy sander like you? Judy in Montreal Québec,Canada.
Great tips, thanks!
Thanks for watching mollyluise :)
Very cool, thanks.
Hope the tips help
Any suggestions if the paint drips or splotches? I tried to keep the can about 8" away, but it still dripped. Thank you for your help
Great vid! You should also do one for restoring the matching patio table...? How do u remove the glass and retore the hardware?
Wouldn't it be easer just to mask the glass?
Minute 4:11 I love the Jeep 🚙☺️
Nice video!
Nice!!! Thanx Jeff
Edgar Ramirez my pleasure to help buddy :D
Thank you👍🏻
I love painting but when it comes to oil paints, I shy off. Do I need to seal it after painting or spray? Thank you so much for sharing :)
Thank you so much for making this video. Do you know how many cans are needed to paint 4 of those chairs?
thanks; very helpful
Diletha Kemp glad to help any time :D
One or two comments. You did a great job! Do you teach ? You are an excellent teacher. One suggestion: Next time show finished product. I was excited to see it after you were doing such a pro job. Plus I liked the color and wanted to see if overall. This video was also very valuable for me to learn that I could paint plastic. I have some other metal chairs in which the whole seat (attached in a kind of sloop to frame) are (I think) plastic. They may be part fabric? Anyway, sorry I can't send a photo....but I am wondering if I could paint that. I am also wondering if the paint comes off at all if you are sitting on painted plastic? Thanks for this extremely valuable chair painting video!
I noticed that you sanded only the area where you'd removed peeling paint. Is it not necessary to sand the remainder so that paint will stick well? Love the idea of not having to, but wanting to double check before starting our project.
The set that we have was given to us (they were throwing it out). It is metal and has been painted over twice I believe on top of the original. Therefore, from what I can tell there are 3 layers of paint on this table and chairs set. Any tips for this??
Thanks and great video!!
Thanks
Great video! Do I need to seal the paint? What would I use?
Does same process work for cast aluminum furniture? Thanks!
I think this is a very good video too. Very descriptive without being complicated. What state do you live in. looks like a nice neighborhood...
I dont have an orbit sander..will do by hand..what kid of sandpaper do you recommend..how many cans of spray for 6 chairs?
Is there any chance of the new dried paint rubbing off on new chair cushions?
Very helpful! Do you have an estimate of how many chairs like what you show a can will cover?
Do you need to protect any nuts and bolts on the underside of the furniture before painting?
Can I use this to protect a brand new cast aluminum set I will be getting delivered in the next few weeks?
What do you do to prevent all the little mist particles from flying onto your house or cars etc
Oh no! I painted mine counter-clockwise! Lol. J/k. Great video.
Thank you, I was afraid I’d have to take off all the old paint!
if the furniture is new, do you still have to sand it before painting it?
Thanks!
We use acid on rust. Great educational video.
Are you supposed to sand every surface or only the ones that look rusty and chipped?
