The D&D story has ANOTHER update!!
Tldr: she said that the DM had been an asshole before and everytime she confronted him, he did the same thing to ask her how he could regain her trust and friendship, so now she said it was up to him to find ways to do it. He called a week later and start calling her selfish and other things, lol she left the D&D group but was planning on start a new one with her girlfriends

Having run/played dnd for now 10 years, she’s probably better off making an Afab table. My new group has me and 2 dudes whose schedules tend to never line up so it’s only ever one of them at a time, the rest of the table is afab and it’s the first table that has a uniform vision in terms of what we want from the game and the play styles we appreciate, I barely had to touch on rpg safety tools with them cause it was just assumed anything of a genuinely horrific or graphic nature would be veiled at least and the concept of red light or a stop button was simple enough.

She figured out he always waited for someone else to tell him how to fix his problems and never actually worked on being better. She told him thats how he can gain trust back by doing it himself and actually wanting to make their friendship better snd stronger and he went off on her calling her selfish and apparently spent the whole conversation yelling at her. Ya, I remember hearing about this one a couple years ago on another channel. It is mind-boggling the way some men think. They justify their actions by blaming-shifting all their mistakes and insecurities onto others.
Even, for the sake of argument, he wasn't in the wrong with his past relationships (doubtful) he needs to seriously self-reflect, heal, and grow as a person. Not, become whatever the hell he turned into. It's just sad and pathetic. If you can't clean up your own mess, then don't start throwing crap.

About the last story. I've gone to therapy for the first time at 39, after my partner pestering me for 10 years about it. I didn't even contemplate it, i just thought it was a bogus and a waste of time and money, and i just needed to tough it out. Well, i broke down and ended up with crippling anxiety. Yay. Went to therapy (on top of the meds im taking) and was surprised that it was nothing like what i thought it was. I thought it was an old man analyzing everything i said and pointing fingers. In reality, it was about giving me tools to deal with life. I'm glad i finally gave in and agreed to go.

There's a high chance he stepped in the relationship with the idea that they could have independent lives while being together. 3 years would signify he has done things for her that she enjoyed or kept the relationship going.
It's not lack of respect, it's the idea that he likes who he is and thought she liked who he was. She didn't like that he lied, and he doesn't feel like he should spend money on something he doesn't want to attend. 52:14 about the D&D story. I’m currently at a table with three women and two guys, and the DM is also male. And the DM specifically put out a advert on Facebook for women to play at his table because he wanted his wife to feel comfortable when she was playing. He and I are friends from high school so he messaged me directly and I was more than happy to play since I didn’t have a table at the time! But part of why I like sitting at his table is because he takes care of the people at his table. It’s wild to me that there’s still so much sexism in the DND/nerd community.

I didn't feel like it ended with all the piece in place. He may have done something that caused court ordered volunteering....he probably made up an elaborate story that he tells everyone so that they don't see him in a bad light....but he doesn't want people to think he's this amazing person either. So that's why he says "but I'm still a bad person." Which makes me think he's still hiding something big. He also laughed and asked her what she meant when she asked if it was court ordered....which makes me think he was gauging how much she knew. Glad OP is out of that relationship, it's all seems really shady.

I had one DM (a fellow woman) question every single decision I made in character and then get upset when my character didn’t forgive an NPC from her past who abandoned her. Like, I truly didn’t believe it was in character for my character to forgive him, but the DM wanted it to get resolved immediately and them to start having a positive father-daughter dynamic again, and it was so exhausting and invalidating. I ended up leaving that campaign bc I didn’t feel like I had any agency and that she just wanted us all to like the NPCs she liked and follow the “correct” story she had built up in her head.

The last story has a pretty important final update you missed. The guy was eventually diagnosed with schizotypal personality disorder.
A key features of that condition is an inability to make or maintain close relationships, as the person doesn't understand the components that build them or keep them together. Sufferers are often described as strange or odd, because the way they perceive things, especially social interactions and bonds, doesn't make any sense to neurotypicals. They often have extreme anxiety and find it hard to trust people, as they find it hard to understand or trust others' motivations (and outsiders obviously see their motivations and logic as bizarre as a result).
Dude seems like a pretty cut n dry case based on how he acted: doesn't know how to trust his GF with (to us) innocuous information based on previous negative experience with people, he doesn't understand the differences between those situations, he doesn't understand WHY she sees it as weird he won't tell her, and he doesn't understand why she feels she can't trust HIM as a result. Cue anxiety, cue more loss of trust, cue more anxiety, cue cutting and running because being able to move past this would require him in therapy which he refused to do at the time because (as the last update says) he was scared of being definitively labelled with something. In his own words he has since "bit the bullet", but is not in regular therapy.

Wrt the perfume story, i feel like ppl are glossing over the fact that not only did she have the money for it and the boyfriend only found out she wanted it bc she SAID she was going to buy it, but she REPEATEDLY asked if he was sure bc she could afford it with him repeatedly assuring her that she could spend that money elsewhere and she only relented when he told her he already bought/wrapped it.
I dont doubt theres ppl who would still insist shes a spoiled brat/gold digger throwing a tantrum even if they got the full context, but i have a feeling his friends&mom got some malformed story about what happened from him rather than that. Like the part of that story that makes me angriest is that he butted in on her plans and INSISTED on handling it in spite of her and THEN dropped the ball and doubled down and make her out to be the bad guy like she wasnt prepared to get it on her own

ikr? Every bit of that story just underscored how immature this guy was and why the best move for op was to move on without him. It's possible he'll grow out of that behavior, but it's equally possible that he won't. If that's how he deals with stuff - even at age 20 - the guy is seriously underbaked. And while people op's age are always like, "But I LOVE him!" the truth is that they'll move on and find someone they "love" equally as much if not more. The world's a big place and it's full of a lot of people who won't drop the ball, gaslight you for their failings, and lie to people around them to frame you and avoid taking responsibility for their actions.
The "love" op felt for this guy is actually love for the person she imagined him to be, not the person he actually is. It's hard to make that distinction when you're on the inside of a relationship but being able to recognize when it's happening is such an important skill to develop.

I say that, but I personally have had horrendous experiences with therapy with not just myself, but some friends and family members (one even resulting in a therapist losing their license). Not wanting to go to therapy isn't necessarily about believeing that "I'm perfect, I don't need help". It can also just stem from not feeling comfortable opening up to people (which the bf clearly has problems with). He's afraid of the proffessional help. The 2 proffessionals I had to see for my own issues were, well, proffessional. They don't tell you you're "weird", in fact a good therapist and doctor will ask YOU why YOU think everyone else will think you're weird. Never once put me down or called me odd or weird, always asked the other way around why I think what I'm doing is wrong or weird. Cause newsflash, nothing was wrong, just different and lots of people think different things are "weird".
If a proffessional doctor is putting you down, drop them. But you're not gonna know unless you try.

As someone who is neurodivergent myself, I feel for the last guy. I think a lot of us believe that we're bad people and unfortunately that can be a self-fulfilling thought. Pre-therapy I was convinced I was evil and that anything I did that was "good" was just me covering it up super well. This resulted in me lashing out whenever anyone complemented me on my character, since I felt like I had tricked them into liking me. Thankfully I stayed in therapy, but there was a struggle at first as I had to trust that the therapist was trying to help me change my behaviors, and not force me to change who I was.
That doesn't mean I was a great person to be around at the time, and Shayne is right when he clocks the behavior as disrespectful. I lost some friends at the time because my behavior was negatively impacting them. While being neurodivergent (on the spectrum, schizotypal, etc.) can provide an explanation for the behavior, it does not excuse it. I've rekindled a connection with some of the people that I hurt during that time (which I realize is a really mature move on their part) but I understand the people who never want to see me again.

I totally agree. Regardless of what neuro differences he has (personally I read him as potentially antisocial/ sociopathic) he isn't inherently a bad person, but his actions that help or harm other people do make his character. It's incredibly sad/ frustrating to see him acknowledge what he's done wrong in the relationship but choose to continue his patterns and not disrupt the cycle when he's given an opportunity to. I hope this isn't the case in the future and that something is convincing enough for him to at least dip his toes in the water instead of running away scared like he did this time

As someone who prides themselves on trying to be a *good* DM, I get so excited if my players have a lucky night for rolling. The goal of a Dnd game is to tell a fun story together, it's a cooperative storytelling game; the point of the DM is to set up the players to succeed! If the players are rolling well, then use it to your advantage to make the story even cooler!!

    • @johnplaysgames3120
      @johnplaysgames3120 4 місяці тому +8

I started playing with a new group a couple years ago and the DM had more of a "me vs the players" attitude toward the game, like his goal was to "win" against us rather than to tell a good story. It wasn't great. Battle after battle, if we were defeating one of his monsters, he'd magically teleport the baddie away just before we won (even if the monster didn't have magic, he'd just teleport them away with no explanation). It was a deeply unsatisfying way to play, but the DM couldn't bear to "lose." And, like a lot of bad DMs, he had a habit of railroading us through his story rather than letting the group have any agency. If we chose to go a direction that wasn't in his one-track itinerary, there'd suddenly be a huge undefeatable monster or eldritch abomination that we'd have to run from or die. He would also get offended if someone pointed out a rule mistake, get all sulky about it, and punish the players with whatever came next. And that was just the basic stuff. It got a lot worse and, eventually, I just left the group because it stopped being fun.
Unfortunately, not all tables are great. Like they say, D&D tables are like therapists; sometimes you have to go through a few before you find the right fit.
