The “test” story made me feel physically ill. To be sat in a room with your family and have someone you felt was also family treating you that way. No one reacting. You’d feel crazy and disgusted and so confused. To add the insult that this test was basically blaming her for the forced sexualisation she’d already received from the previous husband? Vile. Throw the whole family away

    • @belgarath6388

@@belgarath6388 yes I know they weren’t aware of the “test” but I’d still need words with the brother and father about how much they noticed at the time, and about paying more attention in the future. Nothing will change how she felt in the moment when no one else was reacting to his behaviour, I only hope the men in her family genuinely didn’t hear a thing.

If anyone's curious about the BIL x sister test, there was an update 7 days ago.
    In summary:
She's much closer to her brother and father now.
Mother apologized, and while it seemed genuine, their relationship is strained (no surprises there).
Still no contact with sister and BIL and it seems sister is pregnant.
BF's family were awesome and they got very close. Also she thinks BF might propose soon.

OP found out the mom was spreading around that OP seduced the sister's husbands and that it was (bold of her fiancee to support her). OP is cutting out mom fully after forgiving her, maintaining no contact with sister and BIL, and trying to maintain a relationship with Dad and brother (they had no idea about the mom spreading lies to family). In a week, I didn’t see one male doctor. The story with the family sabotaging that poor girl really hit me and brought up some painful memories. Not that I’ve ever experienced anything like that soap opera mess, but this is a family dynamic that’s all too common. There’s the “golden child” and the “scapegoat,” OP’s sister is the first and she’s the latter. One child gets sacrificed to try to neutralize all stress and problems occurring in the family.
This kind of stuff doesn’t happen one time or out of nowhere, and I can basically guarantee the OP talking about being a people pleaser is a direct result of spending a lifetime as the family scapegoat. The sister and mother are clearly the ones with serious problems that need to be worked out, but it’s so much easier to exploit the person who did nothing wrong - make them apologize for absolutely no reason - and then when THEY feel better, you’re the one who’s expected to move on. Family dynamics like this are so psychologically damaging.
My heart hurts for her and I hope she gets to feel what it’s like to have a family that really supports you. I’m so glad she had her boyfriend and his family to be there for her throughout all of that, can’t even imagine the emotional whiplash.

There are conservative communities where the assumption is that, if a marriage breaks up, the wife must've been failing in some way, and if a man does something sexually inappropriate, the women around him must've invited it. I get the impression that the only way the sister could make her husband's creepy wandering eye not her fault was to cast her sister as an evil seductress, and there are a lot of mothers out there who would low key contribute to that with a lot of harassment because marriage is *the* mark of feminine success in their eyes.

I get he was trying to potentially deter a perpetrator by it being more than just her there, but like they said, there's always weapons, and it doesn't really matter who you are if someone unsuspectingly punches you in the back of the head then none of that matters; also inducing a traumatic experience into someone and saying "they still trust me" is very delusional.

The aftermath is crucial in that situation. Especially if she was begging him to get up or said ok that’s enough. Otherwise if she just struggled until she got too tired and he got up I don’t think the sole reason to break up with him. She volunteered and she obviously was still super confident in herself to agree to do that in the first place. If she doesn’t want to be with a guy who can overpower her that’s a completely different issue. The only way she was going to understand that was through him overpowering her. If you make sure to communicate that you care for her and were afraid there wasn’t any way you could get through to her then it’s hard not to see it was from love not malice. Even if you switch the genders I expect the man to take that L and agree that they should try not to be so prideful. I’d rather my partner get mad at me for an agreed upon humbling than to get robbed/kidnapped from putting themself in unnecessary danger. Again you can’t just pin someone down to point of traumatizing them, but outside of begging her through tears I don’t see how he was going to open her eyes if he repeatedly communicated his concerns.

At the end, she asked if I’d ever drink like that again. I said no and then she made me soup and helped me to feel better and it worked. I didn’t drink like that again.

When I was like 7 or 8 I stole one of those spinny propeller candy thingies from a Blockbuster and tried to hide it on my back pocket. It was incredibly obvious of course, and the moment we stepped out of the store my dad noticed and I panicked and confessed to my crime. So he took me back into the Blockbuster, up to the teenager at the register and told her “my kid just stole this candy and she’s here to give it back, but will we have to call the police and send her to jail?” At this point I was panicking and crying cuz I was sure 8 year olds in prison don’t have a good time. Apparently the girl at the register thought it was cute and felt bad and started to say it was okay, but my dad gave her one of those pointed dad looks and she had to go “Well, usually we would call the police and criminals go to jail for a loooong time, but I guess this time we’ll let you off the hook.” And I never stole again.

However, I've experienced domestic violence and stalking and in every single situation I reacted a deeply instinctual need to flight or I freeze. I've never fought in a situation where I needed to. I still think back to times where I feel like I should have fought and I just froze. It's scary to realize mentally and physically you might be intimidating and strong but when it comes down to a real life situation where you're in physical danger from another person your reaction is completely different to what you might expect from yourself.
