  • On a road trip towards Alice Springs from Adelaide on the famous Stuart Highway, we were lucky enough to just pull into a road house for lunch at the exact time these three giants were ready to pull out. Sounded like rolling thunder. Amazing sight to see.

    An old timer I made friends with when I lived in The Alice, used to drive those monsters back in the day when the Stuart Highway was a track of bull dust and he pulled five cattle trailers. He showed me pictures he said were of him doing that job. Said they could never stop or the cattle would die - they needed the air always moving by them or they got too hot. Said he put the truck in the lowest gear and got out to stretch and take a leak with the truck following the ruts on down the road. Interesting stories for sure.

      They used to do the same when on station land with the gates. Stop, open the gate , put the truck in low and wait till the truck 'drove' thru and shut the gate again, then walk a bit beside it having a smoke. Aussie ingenuity.

      In the 70's Baldock's had couple of yellow square cabin trucks (not shaped like today's trucks) back loading to Alice Springs overloaded with bagged copper concentrate from Peko Mine. Noel the camel guy was one of the driver's. Top speed 30km/hrs down hill... to check the tyres on two trailers would tie steering wheel to maintain straight line, going up an incline jump out and tap the tyres for flats. Their story how true was quietly acknowledged yes.

    In the 60's and early 70's it was nothing to see road trains with 5 plus trailers. And the highway from Darwin to Alice Springs was a 1.2 bitumen lane "road". Made by the AMERICANS and Aussies during the WW2 era ..... it took ONLY 6 months....close to 1000 miles long. It was very hard and dangerous to pass said road trains. Many airstrip place along side of it !

    Looked like the trailers were empty, judging by the way the first and second rigs accelerated once on the road. But big respect to these guys, I drove articulated trucks in the UK many years ago, a mere one 40ft trailer running at 38 tonnes gross. I bet those three trailer rigs and the dollies weight more than that empty.

    Not a single head of cattle to be seen looking out from those crates. Obviously these guys were going to load up at some isolated cattle station.
    Loaded each trailer goes around 40-45 tonnes (volume loading) -- now THAT is impressive to see ------------ a FULLY LOADED LIFT-OFF of about 130-140 tonnes !!!
    That's when the awesome power of these engines and the skill of the drivers becomes VERY APPARENT.

      Gregg, diesel is about $1:40 a litre in the cities but these isolated roadhouses in the middle of nowhere it can go up to $2 a litre. If you notice on the 3rd truck, mounted under the trailers are cylinders. They're extra fuel tanks that can be pumped back to the prime mover so he can go extra distance on cheaper fuel.

      the road train licence has existed for decades. It's known as the MC, short of Multi Combination. HC is Heavy Combination, which is for only one truck and trailer. Step 1 is to get an international driver's licence. Then you would have to study Australian road laws. Once you have that, then you can get the learner's permit for MC, then take the test. There are some mine sites in Australia that don't use regular Cat or Komatsu heavy dump trucks. They use 250 tonne quad road trains instead

      Bruh, you are full of it. Immigration IS possible, just ask the thousands of Kiwis working here in Aus. As for licensing, an International Drivers License, covers most small vehicles, and with a US CDL, you could test for a MC or HC real easy.

    • @remarcsd
      @remarcsd 3 роки тому

      Nope, nope, and nope. Its simply efficient in the same way that rail trains are efficient (would you say that a long freight train is a sign of not enough locomotives, drivers or of greed?).
      Most people don't understand the size of Australia and the size of the cattle and sheep stations, Although most of the big ones have been broken up now, but Victoria River Downs (VRD) in the Northern Territory, called The Big Run, the largest in the world in its heyday, was around 10 million acres, it was bigger than some of the countries in Europe. It's nowhere near that now, and is not even the biggest in Australia, that is Anna Creek Station in South Australia, around 5.8 million acres, but that is 5 million acres bigger than the lauded King Ranch in Texas (which rather amusingly on its website calls itself one of the largest ranches in the world, technically correct, as Australia doesn't have ranches, it has stations. But the list of the largest stations in Australia on Wikipedia lists 73 stations, all of which are bigger than King Ranch).
      With big stations comes big distances and empty roads, so there is less need to limit the size of the trucks for traffic safety purposes. Road trains with more than two trailers are generally not allowed in the state capitals (Darwin is the exception I believe). Victoria and Tasmania basically don't have them at all and its very limited for three trailer sets in New South Wales, so they are seen mostly in Queensland, Northern Territory, Western Australia, and South Australia.
