I have been using the same weed killing mixture for years, although when I mix it its without salt and I just use cheap dishsoap and about half the dishsoap amount as I use the vinegar and it works in a day or two to kill its target, plus a little tip is to heat up as you mix it. I use a pyrex glass measuring cup and a microwave, it blends together better( just warm it up a little) the soap only allows the vinegar to stick. I mixed normal strength vinegar with salt and some dishwashing liquid. I spayed a mixture of weeds. By the next day most weeds looked dead but the weed grasses were still fairly green. I'll check them tomorrow. Compared with normal weed killer, I would say this is superior. Boiling water sounds an expensive alternative if you have a lot of weeds. Cool idea... or try skipping the vinegar altogether in this recipe and use water with salt and soap. I'm going to try using Hypochlorous acid and compare that to other methods.
The only way to get rid of weeds is to pull them out by the roots. Roundup and this mix will only kill the tops for about 2-3 weeks. After that, weeds will come back from the roots.
I’ve used just plain vinegar spray on weeds, it works temporarily. Temporarily is ok for an easy and natural weed control on patio, walkways, along house etc.

However I do have some thistle that came from the farm across the street and I'm thinking of using the boiling water technique on the thistle AKA cow grass. Anyway happy gardening thank you so much I really appreciate it in your grass is gorgeous.
If you have the extra money and want to kill the grass and weeds within the same area like me, I’d sprinkle salt all over the area, and then spray the mixture as well for double double killer! ;) gonna try it today!
It may work but the following year I got even more grass. I think the higher PH in the dirt just added the nutrients it needed to grow. Being this is acidic it adds to the PH levels.
I had heard that vinegar was a good weed killer, so I got some and tried it, and the first time, it worked great! But it never worked after that. So I'm thinking now that the first time there must have been a little salt already on the ground, like road salt or something, which wasn't there the second time. So anyhow, we have plenty of salt, and I've just added the vinegar to my shopping cart at You-Know-Where!
HI I use this on weeds in my sidewalks and borders -but not in my lawn. If you put salt on your lawn nothing will grow not even grass. It is great for weeds and poison ivy on the edges of large backyards shouldering wooded areas and rock walls.
I have used this formulation a number of times. It does quickly burn off the surface growth. Sadly, it doesn't harm the root systems, so it all will grow back very quickly. Repeated applications do change the soil, particularly adding the salt. That's fine for gravel areas, no so good if there are other plants. RoundUp is superior as it kills the roots. I know this is an unpopular thing to say but reality is reality. Pulling weeds, not breaking off the tops, is the only green way to remove weeds. All the lazy solutions have issues.
Try boiling hot water. Buy a big thrrmos with a pour spout, fill it with boiling hot water and the start hunting the weeds. The water basically blanches the green top layer off as the hot water then follows the stem down towards the root and cooks it. Repeat as needed.
Thanks for the advice. I need to spray a large area that has been planted out with sapling trees. I want to thin the grass around them. Would this mixture effect the trees?
I'm a novice at this but, I tried it, using 10% vinegar. I had some grass/weeds that were quite long and tightly together. The places where it was tightly together, I pushed by spray nozzle into the center, but some I could not reach. Some of the weeds (don't know names) were not effected. Some of the grass was not effected. But, by the next day, I saw sharp results from the effected ones. A week later, the uneffected grass was still tall and green. I'm going to weed wack the areas down and re-apply.
UPDATE: I redid my grass/weeds this morning at sunup. I used 30% Vinegar, salt, dish soap. by this afternoon (2pm), the weeds and grass was all brown. Every area I had sprayed. Granted, I may have overdone the amount I sprayed, but it worked. I ended up using about 3/4 of the solution over a calculated 20-25 sq feet. This was after I weed wacked the area down to nubbins.
It doesnt kill the root but🎉 is a great temporary with combo of hand weeding and rake digging. Salt will leave soil unhabital to microbes and future plant growth so be mindful of this
The dish soap, any kind really, the brand does NOT matter (no, really) not only helps the substrate adhere to the plant structures above the soil, but it helps to break the surface tension in the soil and for some of the liquid spray to penetrate below to the roots. You get extra insurance on the use of your time if you allow some of the mixture to penetrate into the soil. Even so, and just like insecticidal soaps and pesticide chemicals against aphids, you MUST return again for at least one more application in about five or six days...no more! In the case of the aphids, you now are killing any tiny hatchlings that were protected by egg cases last time you sprayed, but in the case of unwanted grasses and weeds, the first application is probably not enough to kill the roots entirely, especially if the soil were subsequently drenched by rain or your own watering. You need to return in a few days, say a week at most, and this time drench the soil right at the base of the original, but now almost dead, weed and grass.
Definitely trying this and not too long from now. I will just wait for some hotter days and here in S.W. Missouri, there will be many hotter days coming our way!
I have used this and it does burn some weeds, however most of them come back up from the roots. With some plants like Hemlock it doesn't do anything. I sprayed some of this stuff thickly on some hemlock plants and it didn't even make them wilt.
Tried this last year. Didn't work. It did kill the surface leaves but after a few days they just came right back. I tried spraying daily over the same area...nope...they just grew back. Don't waste your time.
Tried the mirimichi green stuff for a fall reno. The weeds and grass comes back unless its young plants. It doesnt kill to the roots. And that first gen gci blueheat aint doing your yard justice.

Thanks for the advice. I need to spray a large area that has been planted out with sapling trees. I want to thin the grass around them. Would this mixture effect the trees?
@@kenkenny4238 leave out the salt it will harm your trees an soil
“Quick tip” 😂. Thanks for all the great advice and humor man!
I definitely notice how heat and sun speeds up weed killers. If it's really hot the vegetation will be brown in days.
Definitely trying this and not too long from now. I will just wait for some hotter days and here in S.W. Missouri, there will be many hotter days coming our way!
New Sponsor? Jet's Pizza! BBQ Chicken is my favorite!
I'm his sponsor🤣 That's my shirt!
So you are saying it doesn’t lead to heart problems after repeated shots?
I'm gonna try this for my back yard Reno
I am trying this tomorrow!
Epsom salt is Magnesium Sulfate it will not help kill weeds, it will actually help them grow
"Always wear your rubbers" 😂
Remember, too, that salt lasts FOREVER on the ground and rain will spread it around. Good luck.
how does this do with blackberry plants?
Will try on my allotment in the UK thanks dude
Going to try it
I'm not saying you look like 1984 Michael Jackson with that glove on, but... I'm guessing you moonwalk in the kitchen with socks on.
Definitely gonna try…pulling weeds ain’t fun…thanks for the tip ❤
Iforgot to mention that you need vinegar with a higher acidity than normal household vinegar
You don’t have to
Wednesday and Thursday were brutal in Indiana. Too hot for me to even spray. I missed out. The 30% vinegar worked a little better last time I used it.
I had to try this. I live in the high desert.
I have used this and it does burn some weeds, however most of them come back up from the roots. With some plants like Hemlock it doesn't do anything. I sprayed some of this stuff thickly on some hemlock plants and it didn't even make them wilt.
Thanks for the tip, going to use this.
Thanks definitely trying this!
I am going to try this . Thank you for the Idea .
Yup, it works! The question now is... are you gonna leave it as is or rip it up anyway? :-)
Ha I will probably rip it out anyway 🤪
This is probably a dumb question but what do you do after the grass and what not is dead? Still yank it out? Let it go?
I will try this. Thank you.
I was about to go bunnings but watched this first & what do ya know I already have all these things 😊
Hello, thank you for the excellent idea. I am struggling with my grass. I just moved to this house and the grass has been absolutely abandoned so we have more weed than grass😢
I have 2 pets and kids. What do you think should I spray almost every where. It would kill the few grass I have right?
ROUNDUP is Glyphosate fella. What is the best weed killer that does not heart the grass.
What do you do when you have round weeds that have yellow flowers from the center of the plant. They are really right among the good grass. How do I prevent killing the good grass ?? Thanks
I'm trying this v right now, thanks bro!!
Natria Weed & Grass Control works well. Has some level of root kill.
Thank you for sharing, will definitely try it.
My recipe is 1 cup vinwgar, 1 cup salt and 1 squirt of Dawn dish soap. Fill with water. Killed the weeds quickly and they didn’t come back.
"Always wear your rubbers" I can think of at least 3 instances where you forgot to Justin...🤣😂🤣😂
Whoopsie daisy 😬😬😂😂😂
@@TheLawnWhisperer that's what I said with my first one...😁
Worried that the salt may rust the metal mechanism in the sprayer.
Also mix equal amounts of vinegar and gin, have you ever seen anything growing under an evergreen.
Fire stick works great for this job as well
