I had been using vinegar in a spray bottle for weeds between bricks. It worked, but had to do it a few times a season. Best done when there’s no rain forecast for the day. Most of you can’t do this but I own a “make your own” wine store. I bring home a batch of wine, 23 to 25 litres of Pino Grigio, and leave it in the sun for a day. I now have enough weed killer to cover my large gravel driveway. Costs me $40 a year and works like Roundup. (careful, it kills everything)
Wil try this. Apperently weed killer is 3 times the amount I would have used to buy the salt and vinegar. I already have the dishwasher. Thanks a lot of love from South Africa. ❤️❤️❤️🙏🏿
Great video. I've used the same process on weeds coming through the paver bricks in my patio. It works well but needs to be applied a few times a season.
Black Belt tip. Add salt to gallon of vinegar shake and bake shake style. Add salt dish soap to mixture shake and bake shake style again. Add mixture to sprayer container.
Can’t wait to try this. When the weeds die, do you leave them, weed whack them, or what? Our driveway cracks are very thin and it’s very difficult to pull weeds from these areas. Thanks for the video!

I’m planning to salt the EArth on my patio Rock garden. I want nothing to grow for years on that area only! I’m wondering How many years will it grow back?
I have used and it does burn some weeds to the ground, however they will come back up from the roots. I imagine that it might eventually work with some weeds if you spray them several times. Some weeds it doesn't ever slow down. I sprayed some large hemlock weeds with this stuff and it did nothing.
What you saw in the video is all I sprayed. I made sure to coat the entire weed. It works best on a hot sunny day. You will start seeing results in a few hours.
I’ve never sprayed my beds, only hardscape like pavers and driveways. Vinegar will break down in the soil, but it will lower the pH of the soil (raise acidity), making it less suitable for some plants. If you choose to spray it in beds, don’t use the salt. As the effects from the salt can be longer lasting and more damaging to future growth.
It works on some weeds, but not others. For the most part, it just burns the leaves, but doesn't actually kill the weed, unless you drown it. It's pretty much a waste of time and money, and you'll have to repeat the application very often.
Salt deteriorates concrete and pavers in my experience. Have you noticed any degradation of your courtyard? It also looks like it has stained your pavers. Does that disappear over time?
People dump lots of salt on their driveway/walkways in the winter.......The amount of salt he's using in this weed killer is so minuscule it would do nothing to concrete.
You are surely right about salt on concrete when over the years it is over done (such as in winter by snow) in particular when it is older or low quality mix. My assumption would be that a discoloration could occur from too much vinegar. Possibly when it is applied when it is too hot because the water evaporates too fast and too much of the mixture remains on the surface?
@@AbbyPenny First off, thanks for this! Speaking of pavers, with all due respect, you have way too many weeds growing between them! I think you'll have a LOT fewer if you actually deal with what appears to be non-existent sand between your pavers... Polymeric is a good choice but make sure you READ the directions/instructions first, or you could end up with a BIG mess on the surface of your pavers! Alternatively, and since you want to seal the pavers themselves, first replace the missing sand between your pavers, then seal both the sand and the pavers in one step.
We live in UK and will give this a try next year because i think the winter rain will wash it off. Is it mostly suited to small leafy weeds, or do you think it'll work well on brambles? I've brushed strong weed killer on brambles to hopefully kill their roots but prefer to use something kinder to the environment. Appreciate your advice. Thanks for a great video 😊
@@analogkidabc we didn't try it sorry. I bought some Roundup and SBK for tree stumps, which both worked so I've used a bit of that on weeds. With brambles, saplings, large weeds it's best to chop them at the base and quickly apply the weed killer as concentrate to the cut end rather than spray. Saves it going everywhere and gets straight to the root 😊 let me know if you have any luck
The salt might create a problem!! Get an old pot and fill it with dirt and lightly spray it with solution...let it rest for a week..then water it and plant grass seeds in it and see what happens!!! Grass seed isn't cheap to waste....good luck!!
It figures that they’d still be pushing Roundup when this does the same thing. In San Jose, the water district recommends Roundup and says the mesh under liners are bad for the environment.
I may have missed it, but how do you mix for a spray bottle?? What I need to spray is not a big area, so I don't need a sprayer like shown in your video. I really want to try this method. Thanks for your tips!
Just cut the recipe down, it doesnt have to be that specific.. in a spray bottle id go with 2tbsp salt and just a squeeze or tsp of soap and fill the rest with vinegar. You should use the 30% acidity vinegar sold at Lowes and Home Depot. The household vinegar is 5%
My husband uses that too on dandelions and other invasive weeds. He burns the core of the weed, and the mature flowers with the white clusters ready to be dispersed by the wind, with a small propane barbecue tank and the nozzle it came with. It works very well.
@@tslavens3092 … No! It is also not to be recommended where weeds grow directly on walls. For weeds like shown in this video it is a very tiring process if you have a larger surface to do. Spraying is much easier and less time consuming.
I made sure to hit the base of the plant as well as the top. It is very effective. I then just brushed the plants with a broom to clean them up. It was much easier than hand pulling them.
If you get to the root it can kill it, but it largely just kills the main plant. The salt can finish it off, but be careful using the salt in areas you intend to replant. I only use the salt on hardscapes.
DO NOT use the vinegar for cooking after you use it as an herbicide. It may be cross contaminated with other things depending on the container you use to mix and apply it. Also, if you use the recipe from this video it will have dish soap and/or salt.
Do not use the salt in a mixture where you want to maintain other plants. The salt can impair the soil quality, kill wanted plants and prevent new growth. Here is more information about using a vinegar based solution (no salt): www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=extension.umd.edu/sites/default/files/_docs/programs/ipmnet/Vinegar-AnAlternativeToGlyphosate-UMD-Smith-Fiola-and-Gill.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwikwZXk_tjpAhVlRN8KHSezDSsQFjADegQIAxAB&usg=AOvVaw1epsiyw-unuiTX2jlAbAhz
Thanks very much for putting together this video. I am wondering how replacing table salt with Epsom salt would affect this solution's efficacy for better or worse or not make any difference in the efficacy? Thank you again ☺️
Just a heads up. That salt will render your soil useless for decades. Walkways sure but don't underestimate the damage those salts will do to soil structure.

Does it stain concrete or brick?
Not that I’ve seen, but it may be worth testing on a small area before wider application.
This works great! Easy to make, easy to use, and effective. Thank you!
I live near a beach can I just use saltwater
What is the ratio of cinder salt soap.
Will it work on ivy?
Will it kill the turf? I sprayed free glyphosate weed killer made of salt and acid which call Richgro week killer. Anyone can advise!
Yes, acid and/or salt will kill grass/turf.
If I use this solution , on the soil to kill , can I plant , tomato and pepper after the weeds disappear.
The vinegar is acidic which will lower the pH of the soil. Test the soil afterwards to see if the pH is in line with what you are planting.
Salt deteriorates concrete and pavers in my experience. Have you noticed any degradation of your courtyard? It also looks like it has stained your pavers. Does that disappear over time?
We didn't notice any issues from the salt. We never sealed the pavers. A new coat of sealant would make them look like new.
@@analogkidabc if you do try vinegar, it's apparently worth getting the strongest white vinegar, some of it is very diluted
After removing all the weeds from a particular area with this solution after 2 weeks maybe can you plant grass ?
The salt might create a problem!! Get an old pot and fill it with dirt and lightly spray it with solution...let it rest for a week..then water it and plant grass seeds in it and see what happens!!! Grass seed isn't cheap to waste....good luck!!
It figures that they’d still be pushing Roundup when this does the same thing.
In San Jose, the water district recommends Roundup and says the mesh under liners are bad for the environment.
How do you get rid of the dried weed after???
I used a hard bristle shop/push broom then vacuumed the piles with a shop vacuum.
I use 1 1/2 cup's Epsom salt instead of regular salt ! That way you can get magnesium in your soils .
But it also helps the weeds grow…
I may have missed it, but how do you mix for a spray bottle?? What I need to spray is not a big area, so I don't need a sprayer like shown in your video. I really want to try this method. Thanks for your tips!
Just cut the recipe down, it doesnt have to be that specific.. in a spray bottle id go with 2tbsp salt and just a squeeze or tsp of soap and fill the rest with vinegar. You should use the 30% acidity vinegar sold at Lowes and Home Depot. The household vinegar is 5%
I use a torch, flame thrower type and nothing survives.
My husband uses that too on dandelions and other invasive weeds. He burns the core of the weed, and the mature flowers with the white clusters ready to be dispersed by the wind, with a small propane barbecue tank and the nozzle it came with. It works very well.
That does work.
Does it kill them for the whole season?
@@tslavens3092 … No! It is also not to be recommended where weeds grow directly on walls. For weeds like shown in this video it is a very tiring process if you have a larger surface to do. Spraying is much easier and less time consuming.
I tried that in my city once. It didn't go well. In fact, I'm typing to you from the afterlife.
What about the roots of the weeds. Seems all weeds are dead from the top. Is this weeds will grow again next time because of the roots left under?
I made sure to hit the base of the plant as well as the top. It is very effective. I then just brushed the plants with a broom to clean them up. It was much easier than hand pulling them.
Plain vinegar. Sprayer. No salt, no soap. Been using plain vinegar for years and it works great!
Nope
We have also used plain vinegar for years and it always works. I don’t know why people are rubbishing your comment.
How many % is plain vinegar?
@@au3399 It's usually 5%. Walmart sells cleaning vinegar with a higher concentration, 10%, as I recall.
how long does it stink?
First time gardening. After the weed is dead, how do you remove it from the cracks?
I used a large hard bristle broom to sweep them up.
@@AbbyPenny Thank you!
Can you use Epsom salt?
have you tried making lavender or bottlebrush plant tea and spray it?
bottle brush tea?
I used this but although it killed the growth it didn’t kill the plant that just grew back
It does work; do this on a sunny not too windy day; better if the next day is to be sunny also.
So then how did you remove all the dead weeds after you killed them?
I used a rigid bristle shop broom to sweep them up. Worked great!!
@@AbbyPenny good idea!
Why not mix it all first and then put in the sprayer?
Does the vinegar mess up the seals in the sprayer?
I didn't notice any problems with the sprayer seals. I made sure to wash everything out thoroughly after use.
@@AbbyPennyThanks
@@AbbyPenny ... Exactly, being lazy is murder for all tools.
Great message and let us hope more folks learn to avoid poisons and chemical.
PonziZombieKiller
How is this not both a poison and a chemical?
Several chemicals!
water, salt, vinegar. All Chemicals.
@danielbrowniel highly toxic
Does it kill the root? Or does the plant regrow again?
If you get to the root it can kill it, but it largely just kills the main plant. The salt can finish it off, but be careful using the salt in areas you intend to replant. I only use the salt on hardscapes.
Heck yeah, I'm on it!
Is vinegar then healthy to be used in our food?
DO NOT use the vinegar for cooking after you use it as an herbicide. It may be cross contaminated with other things depending on the container you use to mix and apply it. Also, if you use the recipe from this video it will have dish soap and/or salt.
Can i use this in cotton crop feild becoz there is to much weed thanks
Do not use the salt in a mixture where you want to maintain other plants. The salt can impair the soil quality, kill wanted plants and prevent new growth.
Here is more information about using a vinegar based solution (no salt):

I skipped the salt and soap. I just weed whacked them flush to the dirt then sprayed the exposed flesh.
so how do you get rid of the dead weeds?
They will simply rot
Thanks very much for putting together this video. I am wondering how replacing table salt with Epsom salt would affect this solution's efficacy for better or worse or not make any difference in the efficacy? Thank you again ☺️
By all means, give it a try with Epsom salt and let us know how you got on. Would be very interested in your results 👍👍
You can get the same outcome with straight cleaning vinegar. Adding the dish soap is a good idea.....thx.
Thanks for watching!
Just use boiling water. It cooks the roots and seeds. For years I have been doing this, have no weeds.
Thank you, have to try. I have mix border and struggling because of weeds
Once you kill the weeds, do you leave it there or pull them out
I use a hard bristle push broom to sweep them up once they fully die.
Just a heads up. That salt will render your soil useless for decades. Walkways sure but don't underestimate the damage those salts will do to soil structure.
