I think cables fall into the “they need to be good enough” category. You don’t need a million dollar cable but you also don’t want the cheapest one you can find.

Well….if the player hears/feels a difference that’s all that matters. I am an audiophile and Without Question the worst discussion when talking to audiophiles is whether or not expensive cables make any difference….otherwise normal people suddenly grow fangs and hate anyone who disagrees with them. For guitar I like my Mogami but also have a new cloth covered Fender cable that seems similar. Again if you like a certain cable then use it and tell everyone to shut up.

The differences in copper diameter, jacket thickness, cable length,, plug material and construction, and then the actual construction of the cable in manufacturing all make minute differences...but if the jack you're plugging into on your venue provided backline 10 year old hot rod deluxe is dirty or poorly constructed then those small differences in your cable might make a big difference.

I remember reading an article years ago about Jimi Hendrix using coiled (curly) cables, and why he thought they were better for "his sound". The condensed version of the story is, Jimi felt that a coiled cable removed more high frequencies from his Strat tone, because they are so high piercing. It makes sense to me, because it's a very long cable coiled. He noticed it raised his mid range considerably, and he liked that sound on a Strat. Go look at pictures of him playing. Most always his cable is a coiled "curly" cable. Great for Strat & maybe Tele's, but can't imagine what they do to Les Paul's. Cheers

Whether the cable matters or not really only comes into play when the venue or location is not good. Bad power, florescent lighting, and neon tube transformers can all be detected by bad cables. The better cable will help with some of these situations. Price and quality are not always related. Good is not always expensive.

Last cable I bought, and still use with my bass is a Vox branded, 20ft white coily cable that goes into one side of my pedal board. I use Mogami patch cables, and a 15ft Mogami as a return to my amp. I have the gold Jack's on the coily cable so sometimes I go straight to my amp and it's a super clean, and transparent signal. My other cables are fine for my pedals as long as I've been playing, 30 years or so, I've never had a 100% transparent tone through a pedal board. As long as I can clamp down 85% of the 60c hum I'm happy. On loud stages I always used a noise gate anyway.

There's something to be said for "Look for the Weakest Link" in your gear. Spending $100 for a cable and then plugging it into a Pedalboard where all the connecting cables are 15 cents each isn't much of a test. BUT..... take any number of high-end cables and plug your bass directly into a high-end TUNER and you can visually SEE the difference in a nano second. Cables matter.....unless you use pedal boards. At that point, all bets are off.

That being said, I like Tour Gear Designs patch cables for the size and shape of the heads, and because they have C-shape cables (where both heads point in the same direction) and S-shape cables (where they point in opposite directions). I also like the feel and build quality of Rattlesnake Cables, out of Montana.

Great video as always. My philosophy with any purchase is simple.... get the best quality for my actual needs (many don't accurately assess what their actual needs are though) within the budget I have to spend. Yup, that simple. And depending on what my budget is, that can often be quite different end product purchases.
So as it stands now, my cables are always "what gets consistently good reviews but isn't stupidly expensive". LOL So I never buy the cheapest, but generally mid-range.
I don't gig. I don't play in a band. I play at home (and by myself), to relax and just enjoy the music. Family, friends, whoever, that's fine if they are around, but I don't play to "entertain" others.... except the Mrs.
On another note, yes cables do make a difference. Sometimes it is worth it, other times not so much. We see the same with all other electronic cables, stereo and speaker cables, and so on. Cheers!

I never put too much thought into it outside of recording. I mainly aim for durability. I prefer angle (instrument) to straight (amp). There was a brand called "pighog" I tried and the cables seemed really good for the price, and they had what a lot of companies are trying now days with the extra thick jacketing to give more protection. Problem I ran into is that the jacketing was just a hair too think to connect properly when plugged into my CS 55 P or Road Worn 50s Tele with the old school cup jack. (no issues obviously on the split coil AVS 57 P) So I went back to the old Fender braided I've always used because I know they work and I get good life out of them. I'll check these out. Always looking for something new to try that's made here.

Bad cables do make a difference, good ones don't. Why would they? There are absolutely no reasons and if there are differences they are so nuanced that you cannot tell them apart.
Unless you make the cables to be different and put a filter in them...

  • @lindelholden5465
    @lindelholden5465 2 роки тому

Guitar cables all have some factor of impedance or resistance that can vary between cables. In general the longer the cable the more resistance it will have. I have heard that guitar cables also have some capacitance, but I have never measured that so can't verify that. But I do know a resistor and a capacitor make a filter that could filter out some of the frequencies in the guitar signal going to the amp. This can be good or bad depending on what you like. I can't tell, but Baxter might be hearing a real sound difference between cables.

A couple years ago I was at a jam session and a guy grabbed my cheap cable by accident, I guess, and left his Monster brand cable, so I took it so I’d have a long cable still. I told one of his friends so that we could swap back but never heard about it again after that.
I wasn’t interested in expensive cables up until then but I’m sold now
I can’t tell that much different on a six string, especially with multiple pedals. Where I notice a huge difference is with bass guitar
I have an old Crate practice bass amp and a lower end Ibanez bass. When I use a cheap guitar center brand cable the bass and amp sound as cheap as you’d expect but switch to the monster cable and suddenly it sounds rich and full and the dynamics are more sensitive!
Also the Monster brand cable feels more substantial and durable than the cheaper cables that I normally buy.
I really wish wireless sounded good and wasn’t so expensive! I’d love to be free to jump and spin without getting tangled!

I make my own: Just get good quality bulk cable and good quality connectors and you're good to go. Most "bad" cables are those that are made with poor quality components that break down under constant use. Capacitance issues don't really impact the overall sound unless you have longer (instrument) cable runs of more than 18.5 feet. I understand why you need top-notch cabling for FOH and such, but at some point you have to determine cost/benefit ratio when your a not a pro out there on the road.

I went on their website and they mention they solder their cables, but the word gymnastics in the description of the product never explicitly mentions if they manufacture the _actual_ cables nor do they mention the OEM for the actual cables (they do mention that they use G&H connectors). For all we know these are Mogami (or possibly G&H) cables...nothing wrong with that, but not being transparent about this basic information makes me iffy about buying from them...also note that at $60 for a 15-foot cable they haven't specified if they are noiseless plugs (my guess is that they're not)...again, i get that people have strong opinions about noiseless vs traditional plugs but my point is that i shouldn't have to guess what they are.

Check out Rattlesnake cables. 100% made in USA, they also use the dragon skin outer sheath, and their jack ends are amazing. Super high quality cables

Hand made cables? Do they mine and then melt the metal to do the cables? Or do they just buy the wires in china, the jacks from china, and then assemble them in the US?

Those eight dollar Reverb branded cables they used to sell before they got bought out were all I needed. Now I need something else that's cheap but good.

Would you put Geostar tires on a Ferrari? Nope. So you need to use good cables in your rig.

For years I used cheapo cables that barely did the job. Mostly because I didn't think there was a real difference. Then I started using Divine Noise cables and that's all I've used for years now. Very happy with their quality and really don't need anything else, but I might have to take a look at Runway Audio, just because Baxter and Jonathan couldn't bite through them :D

After a gig a about 10 years ago there was a left over Mogami cable. It didn't belong to any of my band mates. I asked the few people who were left, and no. I still have it and it's my main cable.

Whatever happened to those half-coiled/half-straight cables that were popular in the 80s? The Clash used them!

I use higher quality cloth covered cables. They don't kink or get tangled; and they take stepping on better than rubber. I also ONLY buy the brightest, ugliest or girly looking colors (neon pink is my fave) because I hosted a barroom open jam for 6 years and discovered that black cables look like everybody else's and loaning one at a jam that is black is frequently like giving one away. Hand a man a bright neon pink cable and that sucker is coming back home tonight! Downside? I have actually had guys refuse to play through a pink cable...really. After having a nice Ibanez 335 style stolen off the stage after gig, I nearly painted every piece of gear bright pink. (it was in a black hard case) I came to my senses after painting three guitar cases and one mic stand. But I will NEVER feel comfortable with black stage gear...bar stages are dark with deep shadows, surrounded by drunken people sans inhibitions and, well, some folk will snatch your stuff. But it's damned hard to cross even a seriously dark barroom carrying a bright pink Martin D28 guitar without someone noticing.

I have not figured out what kind of cable to get.... seems like they all fail or buzz at some time...... have not seen much correlation between cost and function yet.

Bought cheap cables for years, also spent years trying to figure out what was happening to my guitars and amps. Broke down and bought Planet Waves guitar and amp cables. Haven't bought cables in years and they never let me down.

Although I'm open to the possibility that a cable makes a little bit of difference, I don't really think it's enough to care about. I use whatever cables that happen to be laying around at home and an old Line 6 wireless when I play out. I just adjust the tone controls on my amp and make it sound the way I want it depending upon the room. Yeah, I'm a simpleton.

I think cables can matter a lot more than a lot of other things that people freak out about. For example I bet a cable matter more than tone wood on and elecric.
