  • Flushed with success against the Byzantine and Persian Empires, the Arabian forces now seek to push west into North Africa, across the Maghreb, and onwards to the Atlantic. Despite going through two civil wars, the Islamic Empire by 709 C.E. will stretch from the Atlantic to the Indus River.

Thank you for calling them "Romans." This is historically accurate. The Eastern Empire and its citizens called themselves "Roman." Even up until 1453 there was no longer an Eastern Empire outside of the Theodosian Walls when Constantinople fell to the House of Osman. "Byzantine" was not used until a few hundred years ago. It was Western European bias and prejudice because "Rome wouldn't fall to Muslims," but they did. Even today in Romania, they strongly consider themselves the remnants of the Eastern Empire and "Roman." Romanian is a Romance language. They claim to trace their origins back to Trajan's conquest of Dacia.

My admirations to the video. It's a very comprehensive one. In fact, this is one the best videos on history topics I have ever seen. Coming from Bulgaria, I have always been interested in the history of Byzantine and Southeast Europe but I lacked a detailed knowledge about the history of the Arabs and the Middle East. I realize that the founders of the First Bulgarian Empire took advantage of the problems Constantinopole had with the Arabs and now I'm just "connecting the dots" and filling the gaps in my knowledge of the bigger picture in the 7th century... Thank you once again.

But to the deeds of second khaliph (approx 9th minute), someone (don't remember the name) who was friend if Umar went to his house in the evening. Umar put out a candle and fired another one. When the friend asked why you did that, khaliph said "I was working thus using candle from "bait-ul-mol" (that is publicly funded); when you came it's a personal matter not public so I used the candle of my own".

Excellent excellent job, thank you. I am Persian. I remember as a young boy I lived in the small of Nahavand, as you mentioned, was a battleground, perhaps the last battle of the Persian king. Yazgerd the 3rd. I remember as a boys, one day I was playing "kick-the-can" with schoolmate, sadly it was human skulls! We had to cross an ancient cemetery, now shallow, on way home from school!! 😢

Yeah that’s right - in 1973 or 76 can’t remember. In 97 I was traveling in Egypt from Luxor down to Abu Simbel in a transport convoy (you needed military escort to go that far south) and I must have listened to this song half a dozen times. It was especially good when the sun came up off the desert.

No my friend, it is trivial and often political and hypocritical differences that cause problems between groups of people who, in truth, actually have much, much more in common than they do differences. A lesson we may never learn sadly.

It can be said that Navahand was the final nail in the Persian coffin. From there on road Eastward was open. Feel sorry for the Persian culture as the Arabs weren't very kind considering Zoroastorians as infidels and destroying their tamples and holly books. Today Indian Iranis and Parsis are what's left of Zorostorianism, other than very small Gabr minority in Iran that somehow was able to survive.

Refreshingly neutral and academic. One common mistake however is the idea that Muslims pay less taxes. The opposite in fact is the truth. Muslims pay more taxes! The special tax for non Muslims is less than what Muslims pay. In many cases a lot less than what a Muslim has to pay. Also a lot of nuances are lost regarding the internal struggles after the death of Uthman RA but that too can be easily forgiven given the great effort put into this work.
