    I see gate sag and rot on the pickets due to direct ground contact in your future...other than that, cool looking design.

    This video is old, so you may have found a different solution or found your way to open from the outside just fine, but we're going to try a pull knob: National Hardware N109-070 Gate Latch Cable Pull, 40", Black
    This video also taught my husband about tools he didn't know about, so I feel like our upcoming Lowes trip is about to be more expensive 😂

      Looks like that's made to do pretty much the same thing! The spring return feature is nice as I have to push/pull the wire back through manually. No big deal just could be better

    Well I'm impressed with your fence. It really looks nice and is different that the style that is commonly put up around where I live. My only question is why did you cut the pickets and not just got for a 6' fence height? I've become a fan of metal posts (sch 40 galvanized) because I've found you install once and it should be good for 50 years or more. Wooden 4x4's 10-15 years is about all you can get.

    • @ProjectBilld
      @ProjectBilld  3 роки тому

      Thanks! Our hoa wouldn't let it be any taller. I really wanted the flat top capped look so I would have had to cut the pickets either way. And I hear you about the fence posts, I've seen lots of 4x4s rot off. I'll have to look into metal posts for the future

  • @RuedaLibreMotoAdventure

    Not enough screws penetration in the boards, no way!, always should be screwed from picket to post or rail not the other way around, looks pretty today not so sure in a few years

    • @ProjectBilld
      @ProjectBilld  11 місяців тому +1

      Seems like you missed a few details. The pickets are screwed from both sides and the screws come within a quarter inch of sticking out the otherside. It's been almost 4 years since I built the fence and it's still pretty

    • @ProjectBilld
      @ProjectBilld  6 місяців тому +1

      Gotcha. If I had to replace one I'd probably cut the picket in half so I'd have room to slide it out. For replacing it I'd dig out under it a little and leave it shorter than before, just long enough it fits under the top rails.

    • @ProjectBilld

    Instead of having to put in the wire to open the gate from the other side
    You could have but the latch at the top
    So you can reach your hand over and open it

    • @ProjectBilld
      @ProjectBilld  4 роки тому +1

      I've been thinking about this one for a little while and the problem I could see with that someone would be able to push the gate open far enough at the bottom to get through

    • @theangrygamer1137
      @theangrygamer1137 4 роки тому

      True
      However your gate is designed to look like the rest of the fence. If someone did find the gate and wanted in,
      the wire sticking out will be found before that person will realise that going under is a possibility.
      If you are worried about the gate being able to get under using a second latch at the bottom will solve that issue, then add wire and attached it to the first latch at the top so the gate can open.

  • @JonnieMazda

    My overly complicated solution to opening the gate from the outside with the latch still in the middle would be to cut out a 2"x2"x4" piece of wood out of the top rail on the inside of the fence section with the latch. Then reattach it with a small hinge that allow it to lift up. Then attach the latch wire to it. From the outside it will look exactly the same and when you use the gate it appears as if you are just putting your left hand on the fence to brace yourself and pushing the gate open with your right hand when in reality your left hand is actually secretly lifting up on the back of the top rail. Almost reminiscent of tilting a specific book on a bookshelf to open a hidden door.
    Also I feel like you should add the metal brackets to the the gate so it matches the rest of the fence. While they aren't needed since the gate isn't attached to the 4x4's it will make it even less obvious that something is different about that section.
    Fence and gate is great as is though. Keep up the good work!

    • @ProjectBilld
      @ProjectBilld  4 роки тому

      Nice idea! Would be fun to make. And I am planning to add fake brackets to the top but I need to cut them in half and grind them smooth so they don't interfere with the posts on the side. Just haven't gotten around to doing that yet

  • @fixitfern5339
    @fixitfern5339 Рік тому

    Never seen anyone screw the pickets from the back side, why? You screw picket to the 2x4. From the front side always.

    • @ProjectBilld
      @ProjectBilld  Рік тому

      I screwed from both sides. Was a bit of overkill as I never want the pickets to pop off. I see way to many fences with the pickets popping off

    • @ProjectBilld

      No problems with wind to this point. As the boards dried they shrunk a little so there are 1/2 to 1 inch gaps between them that keep it from acting as a sail
