Thank you very, very much. I am just finishing my wood panel covered fence gate like yours. My is 20 feet and I lift it vertically. Those straps you mentioned were key to my final assembly. Who would have thought the 1½" size would fit so well!
Thank you so much for this video! This is exactly the type of privacy gate I want to use for my driveway. The details and links to materials is really helpful.
I want to thank you for doing this gate and for making this video especially. I used this video as a guide to build this gate myself. I ordered a shed and my gate opening was too small so I built this. I got the gate from tractor supply, the hooks from lowes and wood from a local store. I cut a picket so the gate will swing both ways as well. I have a few pickets left and tomorrow after work it will be done since dinner was more tempting than finishing. Again, thank you so much for all the work that went into showing us this!
This is perfect! I wanted a very DIY and cheap way to make a 10-foot gate to replace my sagging/collapsing wooden gate as a hold-over until I have money to redo my entire property fence. I found a Wilco/TSC farm gate and thought, what if I reuse the pickets that I already have and attach to it? And lo and behold, you have done it with the same thing in mind!
Steve, thanks for uploading this walkthrough. This is almost exactly the setup I am doing also. I came here looking for ideas on gate wheel setups. But was pleasantly surprised to see an uneven driveway, corral gate with pickets and a sprung wheel. VERY helpful stuff here. Going out now to work on mine.
Thanks for the detailed video. I've attached fence panels to dog kennels before using conduit straps. Works well. I have a heavy metal gate across my property and I was researching gate wheels. Love your ingenuity in how you rigged the wheel. I think it'll work for mine. I have the same latch you have. Cheers!
Thanks for putting together this video! Im planning out a sliding gate with an automatic opener and the idea to adding wood to a farm gate is such a money saver!
I had the idea to use a farm gate with pickets, came searching to see if it was possible. Will save a lot of $ vs a welded custom gate. Thanks for posting.
This is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you ima show my dad. He is wanting to build a new fence but couldn't find a good sturdy long lasting way to build it. Most require welding or hundreds of screws or lots of wood yours is the most cost effective I seen.
HEY STEVE, A TIP FOR YOU ,THE TOP J BOLT SEE IF YOU CAN FLIP IT TO POINT DOWN SO THAT NOBODY CAN PULL UP THE GATE AND TAKE OFF WITH IT, YOU JUST NEVER KNOW THESE DAYS, A GROUP OF GUYS CAN COME WITH A TRUCK AND PULL THAT GATE RIGHT UP AND OUT AND BE GONE
Yea Lee, I have had a few notice and comment. I did this on purpose because of some geometry I had to figure out with my uneven driveway. I have so much weight on it now that its not going to be lifted without a 2 ton floor jack. Way too heavy with an angle. You are right though. I put the top one facing down out on our hunting lease. Thanks for watching. Mine is still working great. Steve
Thank you for the video. I really like the idea of using the conduit hangers. I have already purchased a 10' gate for my project and mounted a solid wheel to it. I was like you trying to decide how to mount the privacy fence to it. Now I just have to figure out what kind of latch I want to use.
This vid very helpful-I'm planning to put barn doors on stable not really designed for typical doors. I had already figured out that I would use gates (there are about a dozen of all sizes located on property, not being used) and some sort of ply boards (west facing opening so rain pouring into stable is a serious issue) and with your vid, assembly will be easy. Thanks!
I have an overall driveway width of 27 ft. I just installed a 16 ft for the main driveway, and a 12 ft for the RV access. Same gate that you have. This was helpful. I was just figuring out my options thank you for sharing.
Thanks for sharing. I'm probably going to do my 3 gates just like this except I am going to screw the wood to the post instead of condiut one hole straps! Thanks again!
I just finished this same project. I was able to use a different mount for wheel. I pet a cut 2x4 between wheel mount and metal post inside the U bolt.
Great idea! My wheel mount method is still working but I plan to update it using U bolts . I will have a video on the update once done. Thanks for the idea. Steve
I update my wheel mount recently with 2x6 and u-bolts. You gave me the idea. Its much more rigid now, Thanks. I have an update to the video coming out very soon. Steve
Great video! Thank you for sharing your gate project. The through bolt hinge brackets was a good idea for longevity and you're right about making it easier to adjust in the future if needed. I especially like the pneumatic caster wheel with the built in suspension. That's the first tie I've seen that style of latch. I wonder if there would be any easy way to add a lock the could be easy opened from the outside when needed. Thanks again for the great video!
I would suggest that you install another horizontal board further up from the top of the gates because the pickets are unsupported unless you would like to see the pickets moving all over the place in time.
This design may solve a huge problem for me. You are so good at showing how something is made. I’m acquiring the parts now for the 1/4 wave ground plane antenna. Could you please reply with total price of everything for the fence or close to it? Thank you.
Hey, if nobody mentioned it your gate is not hung on the J-bolts properly. How you have it done now the gate can be lifted right off the J-bolts an opened. Spin your top j-bolt 180° and you’ll be good to go. Great video overall,👍
Yes someone has mentioned that. I do spin the top bolt down at our hunting lease. This gate is way too heavy for someone to lift with this amount of boards on it. They would need a 2 ton floor jack to budge it. I used a floor jack at the other end while building for support until I mounted the latch in the correct position. It is working just fine at this time. One of the best DIY projects that I have ever done. Thanks for watching.
@@hamradioportable1630 yeah i am going to need a 16 foot gate, just measured it. The gate we have now is a sliding gate because the driveway is sloped big time. I would have to swing in and the wheel wouldn’t reach the ground for sure until close to being latched. I wonder if this is even possible with my situation.
Nothing too special except the clamps that came from Home Depot. You should be able to see the item number in the video. I will look into it. My gate is still working great. Thanks for watching. Steve
Thanks for the video. I put an offer in on a fixer upper house that has a fence on one side and the neighbor has a fence on the other side right by the driveway at nd the driveway goes right through the rest of the area I'd like to fence in. It's in a somewhat bad area so I'd like to park in the back so people aren't able to tell when someone's home and I'd like to fence in the yard so my family members can bring their dogs over. The only solution is to either fence in a very small section going up to the garage or have a gate going across the driveway and put up a fence behind the garage
From the 6x6 post to the 4x4 post where the latch is I measure 145.5 inches. Keep in mind you have some adjustment with the type of hinges that I used. Hope this helps. My gate is still working great. Steve
Mine has been fine. Very minimal. Don't want to add any more weight than necessary. Some aluminum angle iron painted brown on the inside could be an option i f it was needed.
True, in a farm location with no wood pickets on it. Too much weight on the hinges with the added wood. Someone would need a 2 ton floor jack. That's what I used while building until I mounted the support wheel.
Measurements between post will depend on the hinges you use on the 6x6 post for the metal gate. Mount the gate before you decide where to put the post with the latch. That's what I did. The crucial measurement is between the metal gate and the post with the latch. Because of the type of latch I used, that distance is 2 7/8". The latch provides the measurements also. Good luck, mine is still working great.
5/16 x 1" bolt with wood threads. Use the largest that will fit thru the hole on the clamp. Easily found at Lowe's / Home Depot in the nuts and bolts section. Hope that helps. Steve
Not only is it a great video, but I appreciate the direct approach with no fluff. Thank you sir!

This may be a dumb question but can you bring that gap a little closer where the hinges are? It looks wide from the video
What is securing the straps to the 2x4? Is it threaded bolts or wood screws? Thanks
Hex head wood screw.

Not much at all.

Hello, was just wondering what type/size of screws were used for the EMT Strap to the 2x4?
1/4 lag bolts
Your pickets will warp at the top , you have to have a 2x4 at the top

How far down are the lag screws holding on the conduit straps on the 2x4
An inch or so. Enough to give the lag screw a good bite.

3/8 I think
I wonder how well the wheel would roll on a gravel driveway. It might cause some issues when it's been raining heavily
It does. We ended up pouring concrete to fix that problem lol
