      Would be a nice touch, but actually wouldn’t extend the life of a fence. This fence in particular, will rot off at ground level because she used 4x4 posts. Oh, and I’ve been building fences for over 40 years.

Guys, while I'd desperately see everyone in a mask (properly worn) to help mitigate COVID spread, to the point of mandate, I will strongly encourage you to follow David's advice and wear a respirator when spraying. And cutting MDF, or sanding, anything that produces fine particles that will cause lung problems.

    It is beautiful. Don't know how much wind you get at this location, but it's usually advisable to leave air gaps between slats to allow air to flow through the fence rather than creating a solid barrier. Doesn't take much wind pressure (psi) over hundreds of thousands of square inches to put tons of force on it.

    If the horizontal boarding was done half in one side and the other on the opposite side maybe with a bit more overlap you could benefit from the reduced "wing" effect of the whole fence, also reducing wet spots with the enhanced ventilation and still have the occultation intended.

    With regards to the top cap rail, cutting the butt ends at a 45 degree makes the joint better as the wood will shrink and the gap will be less obvious.

  • @dorandan100
    @dorandan100 3 роки тому

    Good Looking! Only change I would consider would have been using a rounded or champferred top rail to keep water (or snow for us mountain folk) from pooling. If you look at older fences like mine, it's the flat top rails that split & rot long before any other fence boards. I do like the look.

    Using the spacer, I would have to start at the bottom and rest the spacer on the bottom board while attaching the top board. If I did it the way you did, I wouldn't get very many boards up, let alone getting them up level.
    I think the template method is perhaps the best way of doing it, but I would want two templates; one on each side so that I could put the boards in place, and then just go down the line and nail them.
