  • Ever wonder how much It might cost to restore your first generation Firebird? We plan to show every step of the process and list out all the parts and costs involved minus labor of course because we are a DIY channel and labor isn’t included. We have a 1968 Firebird that will getting every nut and bolt removed and every system inspected and refurbished as needed. In addition to that it will be done in a two car garage proving that you could do the same. We have completed the body shell and tallied up the cost thus far and it was a little more then I guessed. .

    Just bought a 68, and was wanting to know how you would fix the trunk lock cylinder hole that's been wallered out? Don't want to buy a new tail panel because the original is in great shape.

    • @VinylVillageGarage
      @VinylVillageGarage  2 роки тому +1

      Depends how bad the hole is, hammer & dolly. With some files and reshape it. Now if it’s destroyed, two thoughts first weld a plug over the hole and go electric actuator to release the latch or what I would probably do cut out from a good new or used tail panel and weld it back in as repair section. If you need it I have a tail panel I would be willing to cut up for you. Just let me know.

      @@VinylVillageGarage thanks for the advice. I'm not a body guy but want to restore the car as much as possible by myself, the hole isn't that bad. Just looks like someone removed it by pushing it in so a new cylinder won't fit. Will try the hammer and dolly. Thanks, love the channel.

    So my guess of $5000 was only off by 160 bucks, lol. How times have changed. Back when I was restoring my 69 in 1982 for the first time, my mom asked if wanted a class ring or something else? She bought me quarter panels for 75 bucks each. Bodywork and paint job total 800 bucks. Hopefully starting the next restore in a couple years. Enjoy watching and learning from your videos. Keep up good work, have a great Labor Day weekend all!

      I live on the south side Greenwood area, i have done a few small items for people in the past but for the most part I just build cars for me and share the journey, the great pumpkin here is a once in a lifetime opportunity for someone else to have a car built by me. It was one of those perfect time and place things. I don’t feel I will do it again at this point in my life. Not to say in the future if the UA-cams turned into a nice revenue generator and I could purchase a larger repair shop that would be a game changer, and even a career changer too for me. I have a question for you. I'm about to start a project similar to this one. I'm looking at the option to buy a complete floor with frame rail instead of buying all the piece to make one. What is your opinion about those ? Is it worth the money ? Never done any real metal work to a car before.

    • @VinylVillageGarage
      @VinylVillageGarage  2 роки тому +3

      I have debated the complete floor from firewall to tail panel even for this car. I didn’t because I was hoping to reuse the frame rails and as we know now I didn’t. Both
      Ways have pros and cons really. Since I don’t have any experience with the complete floor with frame rails I can’t give you a accurate opinion if that is the way to go. I will share that I have purchased items like the complete convertible rocker panel and the outer skin was mislocated 1/4”’to far forward had to drill out the spot welds and reposition it. Plus while it was apart I learned the entire inside was bare metal no coating whatsoever… not cool. With that said I can only assume maybe there might be issues like that buying it preassembled or it might be perfect wish I could tell you. The advantages, the rails should be in the correct position, it should
      Have clean spot welds and secured. That
      Might be the way to go for the first timer. I know that doesn’t give you clear answer what to do but hopefully a little insight from my experience.
