  • The Queen is Dead, and on her dress the polka-dots collide. The media has been preparing for this for years, if not decades, so they better way have pulled it off. Who excelled? Who disgraced themselves? (spoiler: no-one, really, and the two right-wing idiot news channels) How did we make it through ten punishing days without losing our tiny minds? Did we? Find out, or don't!

Really good overview. The things that stick out to me are probably the things too minor to mention, but are now in my memory:
    1. Andrew Marr on LBC breaking down in tears as he announced the news.
    2. The fact that Channel 5 announced the death of the Queen with a shot of two policemen attending outside the opening and closing gates of Balmoral.
    3. The Royal Mint website going down because people were overthinking that their money would be worthless on the death of The Queen.
    4. Relief/Horror over Boris Johnson's eulogy. Relief that he wasn't PM, horror over Liz Truss' speech.
    5. The 5 minutes we didn't know if he was going to be Charles III
    6. And finally, the Pres Café debacle over the continuity announcers not being 'middle class' and 'too ethnic'

Very well put together Matthew, I had been waiting to see what you would do from within minutes of the news breaking. For me it was an odd day, I was on airport standby and sat in the crew room at Manchester Airport, we had the TV on and it was on BBC1. I don't remember it cutting from Bargain Hunt to the news as I wasn't really watching it but then those of us who were on standby became hooked watching it and chatting, working out what was going on. A few of us, myself included admitted around 3pm that she must have gone as it was pretty clear that the Beeb were trying to ready us and soften the blow. We were all chatting away just after half six and as the screen showed a flag at half mast I shouted out "oh s*** here we go" and well, there it was. As for the aftermath, I was on holiday for most of the week of mourning and only got home the day before the Funeral, ended up being called out to operate that day so missed it...

Well put together. GB News was a car crash, but nowhere near as much as Talk. Alistair Stewart did the best with what he was given, which wasn't a row of beans.
Channel 5's Emoji Movie was, in defence, part of a strategy to provide an alternative service to younger viewers. Channel 4 did exactly the same thing for Diana.
There's also a new problem now and that's Statmuxing. If both Channels 4 and 5 broadcast the funeral, the same pictures would be going out, simultaneously, on five channels. This is why BBCs 3 and 4 simply shut down rather than take the news broadcast.
I'm not sure how much the BBC knew during the afternoon, in any case it was blatantly obvious from the statement itself and the fact that the family were flying up that "This Is It."

An excellent documentary, alongside the ones for Philip and Diana. I was one of the five per cent, even if I had wanted to I felt so ill I wouldn’t have been able to lift my head up for long enough, so my memory is mainly watching how the networks turned The Queue into something less like a memorial and more like live from the Big Brother House. I really did half expect the BBC to employ the BB announcer to do some “Day 3 in The Queue. David Beckham is about half way to the front sharing his Greggs custard doughnuts but Holly and Phil have caused a ruckus by using the press line instead.”
The other main feeling I got was Paddington will never be the same again. Once you become the Grim Reaper it is hard to go back again.

Not sure it’s quite accurate to say ‘lessons had been learned’ from the DofE. Yes, BBC simulcast the news across its channels for fewer hours but this has more to do with the time of the announcement (6.30pm compared with 12ish last time). In both cases BBC2 stopped simulcasting at 6am the following day. I think also the fact there was a full expectation that HM would be blanket coverage for a time plus the level of public engagement with the news compared with HRH meant that people didn’t really notice BBC2 losing an evening’s prime time programmes (or indeed ITV, C4 and C5). In every other respect, coverage was far more saturated than for HRH. In fact BBC1 went more or less back to normal after 24 hours then. In HM’s case they didn’t show a normal programme til the Sunday night. The low level of complaints (some 600 compared to 100,000) shows this largely reflected the public mood or at least its expectation. Anyway, great account of an historic 10 days for broadcasting and this nation and Commonwealth.

I think some lessons were learnt. ITV stayed with the aftermath of the funeral for good couple of hours whereas the BBC came off pretty swiftly via that legendary sign-off by Kirsty Young, went to the news, I think ran a highlights programme after that, then showed Paddington 2 which I thought was unusually inspired scheduling from the BBC.

Excellent video. I'd actually missed all of this at the time, having decided that Netflix and UA-cam were infinitely more preferable options than watching a plethora of talking heads talking b*ll*cks for days on end, before I buggered off to France on my bike for a few days to escape it all.
We'll be going through it all again in a few years, but by then the BBC (if it hasn't been defunded) will have half a day of special programmes on the actual day on BBC1, followed a few days later by the funeral, and nothing else... ITV will have about two hours in between Loose Women and Tipping Point... Channels 4 and 5 will mention it in passing, and hopefully the likes of TalkB*ll*cksTV and GBeebies will be distant,. unpleasant memories.

I think that was what caused the 'punishment' from the RadioTimes more than anything, because they might highlight a series in their pages and then be the ones who would get the complaints from the viewers when only two episodes got shown!
