  • The Duke of Edinburgh is dead, in case you hadn't noticed. But there seems to have been discrepancy between the nation's grief levels and those expected of them. A video essay from your good friends at Bob the Fish Productions. God is my help, all others pay cash.

When Diana died, one of the most admirable, yet under appreciated, public service broadcasts came from Channel 4. On the day of the funeral, Channel 4 passed on the coverage and put out a schedule of children's programming all day. In 1997, multi-channels were absolutely not available in all homes. With only five channels on offer to a majority of households, an alternative line-up of content was invaluable to young children who needed to escape the gloom of the not-understandable to them event of Diana's funeral. Channel 4 also excelled in the wake of 9/11. The immediate three days following the event, The Big Breakfast was replaced for the first time by Channel 4 News. But when The Big Breakfast returned the following Monday, the show arguably put out its greatest content ever. The tone was perfect, they produced a week of shows which were beautifully toned down yet still kept a youthful edge whilst explaining the seriousness of what had occurred to its younger audience and offered reassurance and discussion over an event which was even difficult for adults to immediately comprehend the sheer magnitude of. Ed Hall stood-in for those shows, and his approach was superb. He even admitted how difficult it was for everyone involved in a typically light-hearted show to tackle such a world-changing event.

This is the first royal death that I'm old enough to be interested in and personally, I found the disruption fascinating. But then again I found disruption from technical problems exciting too as a kid. Seem to recall a couple of time when Children's BBC was knocked over so hard that they had to pull a couple of rather old cartoons id never heard of out of some cupboard just to fill some of the dead air
Gotta say as well, the calm semi-classical stuff that Radio 6 was playing after the announcement was genuinely excellent

Is it bad that I laughed at 9:48 thinking of the folks who were jamming to that and suddenly wondering what the hell was going on? If so, I apologise.

Also the unfortunate juxtaposition of Jeremy Vine's name and Vanessa Feltz's picture and voice (not an error, she was covering his R2 timeslot that week).

I like how channel 4 got to like 8PM and was like "right, thats enough of this bullshit. Let's own the days ratings with gogglebox while everybody else is going mental over the death of a racist old man"
Based C4, that's why i'll always have affection for them in a way i'll never have affection for post-regional ITV, channel 5 and just about every other channel that didn't show cartoons (except bravo and CNX, loved those)

Do yourself a favour, don’t be a full grown adult who refers to something as being “based”. It’s embarrassing.

Channel 4 fulfilled its public service remit to the letter by providing the alternative to crying over a crusty old racist ;) Very 80s Channel 4 of them in a way... even if it DID involve putting on Gogglebox.

I've 0 ill will about Prince Phillip (and I'm Irish lmao), but I mean I feel like for a TV channel to be off all day for the death of a royal is a bit much

I think you captured the general mood quite nicely there and that was a neat little summary.
I found out on twitter first and then bizarrely via QVC (which...even more weirdly was how I inadvertently found out the queen mother had died years earlier)
As you say, Lord knows how maddening this will all get when the queen goes. I'll probably just lock down and crack on with some long boring project that doesn't involve me engaging with anyone 😂
    Great video as always :)

A nation in mourning as Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, died. Meanwhile in America, two well-known figures died on the same day. DMX and Ramsey Clark. The trio had died.

I had previously commented on The Alma Syndrome about when I was a baby, and my Mum finding out during an early morning feed, but this is the first one I was actually aware of and comprehended, being a now 24 year old man. I found out on my laptop. My girlfriend and I were watching a movie on Netflix, and when it ended, I think I was looking something up about the actress, and when I went to the Microsoft Edge splash page, it was the top story. That's when I immediately tuned onto the linear Television channels, and we had a look at what all of them were doing. I think we did this for 20 minutes before the novelty wore off, and we watched Benidorm on Netflix.
I think that paragraph sums up how people in my generation feel about it, and the Royal Family in general. I think our generation's connection with them is so weak, it boils down to respecting the Queen, and The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The Royal Family is not on a wavelength that appeals to people of our age. When the Queen dies, I think there will be that profound and genuine sadness that was had when Diana passed away. For Charles or Princess Anne? I don't think we will be that sad.

And a year later, I have to add this: Could Forth Bridge have been a dry run for the Queen's death? While they do practice the death coverage of the royals, I have to consider that a lot of what didn't work for Philip's death was actually ironed out by the time we lost the Queen.

Phillip was massively over the top. There was also no thought to the fact it was a Friday night in lockdown - with no pub to go to and no television to watch I was ready to kill myself.
I get that BBC One had to go wall to wall. But BBC Two should have provided an alternative watch given the very nuanced circumstances of it being Friday night and the audience locked in their homes.

The big difference from Diana is also that there was no internet to escape to back in 1997 so all there was was the incessant television coverage (beyond sticking a video on). This time all television and radio going full Phillip for days on end did not really register at all to me. In fact it was a pleasant break from the usual news cycle when I periodically checked in.
Plus we need more obscure dubbed French gangster films starring the late Jean-Paul Belmondo! Remember when BBC1 used to run those? *sigh*

the black screen with the depressed 4 blocks definitely seems like a weird choice, and i think just having the 4 intact with that color scheme would've looked better, though i also think most of the idents with the 4 broken up don't look that good

Great video. [As always.] Intersting to see The Royal Family speaking in past tense in black clothes. on the B.B.C. I.T.V. interviews were up to 10 years old. I.T.V. 2 , 3 and 4 stayed as they were with The Horse racing moved to I.T.V. 4 on the Friday. The U.S. Masters Golf coverage continued on Sky. It was also intersting to note B.B.C. I Player continued as normal. Will that be the case when her majesty The Queen sadly passes. Thank You.

TV went mental for a few days. What will happen when the Queen shuffles off? I think the TV channels will go into somekind of crackpot meltdown. Thank god for Netflix.
