- The Unicorn in Captivity (one of seven woven hangings popularly known as the Unicorn Tapestries or the Hunt of the Unicorn), 1495-1505, South Netherlandish, wool, silk, silver, and gilt (The Cloisters, The Metropolitan Museum of Art). Created by Beth Harris and Steven Zucker.
I've had the privilege of viewing these twice in my life...I can't wait to see them again...
what nobody remarks here is that the unicorn is wounded. wounds from the capture.
I know your comment is from 4 years ago but I just had to tell you the insight
That’s actually pomegranate juice falling on the unicorn
You can see more juice dripping
Crust resurrected is often referred to as the bridegroom
Perhaps the realism of the flowers was thought necessary because people of the time were more intimately connected to the plant life around them.
The lion is Yahushuah, the unicorn is the bride and the lamb is the child of God.
recently saw the series of tapestries 'the lady and the unicorn'. took a relative who prefers all things russian. she was in tears at the amazing beauty and detail. me? i was speechless.

I watch ALL of your videos and am a long time subscriber and need to express my thanks EXCEPT I CRINGE WHEN YOU INTERRUPT EACH OTHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Happily, we've gotten better about that. This is an old video, we did do too much interrupting early on-too much excitement and impatience. Recently, we've made some progress in remaking older videos and so you should hear less and less interrupting. Thanks for being in touch.
Smarthistory Regardless, flaws or not, it's a brilliant series!
Excellent video. Thank you.
I think the perspective gives a lot of clues. The way i see it the unicorn is being viewed by the owner from a 2nd story window as a captured prize. I see it almost as a picture in a locket worn around the neck. All the hassle of the hunt for this...
Looks like their are small bite marks with small droplets of blood, maybe it represents stolen purity in captivity...unpure beings stealing the magical life force of the unicorn
Wow, I've seen these images so often, but never stopped to really think about them...
Venture Bros anybody????
Yeah. That episode got 'mature content' so fast.....a good episode.
Hmm... Seed and blood from the pomogranate, what can be more obvious... The chain and round fence look to me like the umbilical code and its womb. It is a baby unicorn perhaps?
I enjoy the whimsy of this, but the unicorn's face weirds me out a little... human-like eyes, massive nostril, decidedly flat mouth.. Idk. I do like the whispy details of his hair, though. The two traditions are one in the same: Christ is the bridgegroom of the church who willingly allowed himself to be "captured." This is one of the more interesting ways of portraying the narrative.
My favorite work of art ! I have to see it in person at least once a year ❤
i actualy have a machine made replica of this tapestry on my wall, albeit a lot smaller its a beautiful one for sure loved learning more about it
Anne of Aquatein must have loved this gift for her castle home's stone walls `...ONE'S SYMBOL OF PURITY, WILLING FIDELITY OF COMMITMENT TO LOVE
I find this tapestry very sad, poor unicorn 😢
💐💐👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
What kind of is it on???

Now hear me out, long shot i know, but what if..... the artist just wanted to make a unicorn and that's it
That might make some sense in the 20th or 21st centuries but it makes less sense in the late 15th century. Think about the extravagant cost of producing such a finely crafted tapestry. In addition, this textile would have required a workshop of highly skilled people, so the idea of a single artist doesn't really work here.
@@smarthistory-art-history Ah, makes sense
Why paint it if it is not real?
+Javier Ruiz Why would you only want to paint mundane things, that you see everyday, when you can let loose your imagination and really express yourself?
How about religious figures, are they real?
thats called creativity bro
Why read fiction if it's not real? Why watch films if they're not real? Why have dreams when asleep if they're not real? Etc.
So all paintings in the world should only be of real things? Why do you dream things that don't exist? Thank god not everyone in the world thinks like you.
Poor unicorn 😢
