Goth music people. I think all Baby bats should watch this video and people who think that Motionless in white and Marilyn Manson is Goth music which it isnt!
They're not goth but they do have that dark image look so I can see why some people think they're 'goth' but they never said they were nor is their music considered gothic. Lol
You're right they're not, but if a goth happens to like them too then there's nothing wrong with that (though Motionless in White are terrible, sorry but not sorry).
Gothic Evil Entries it's not "more metalcore", it is metalcore lol nothing goth about their sound at all. That being said, yes the singer as far as I know stated bands like the cure, joy division, and I think Bauhaus as some music he liked so he probably does enjoy some goth music despite not making goth music.
This whole thing makes me laugh because I'm old and grew up in the 80's. Love that people are arguing about what's "goth" and not. The term goth was not even a common word in those days. Yes I remember hearing it, but mainly it was called new wave. Siouxsie, Bauhaus, the Cure, Echo, JD, Christian Death, DepecheM, the Mary Chain, Smiths, New Order, Sisters, Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil were all very much part of the "darker" side. But, in those days the idea of Yaz playing next to Bauhaus or Erasure on a mix tape with Bad Religion or XTC was not an uncommon thing. It was way less mainstream in those days and anything "alternative" was celebrated with black clothes, a weird haircut and attitude. It's all become so lame now. The thing that is called "Goth" these days is way more indicative of metal. Nowhere near where the original artists intended. History lesson concluded. You may all reply with your hateful comments. I await them with nothing. Cheers
True. And it wasn't even called "goth" but "cold wave". "Goth" was refering to the "Batcave" music style with such group instances like The Stray Cats. Very funny when you compare to the definition today.
It is true that Goth wasn't wildly used in the 80s to describe this music and it was just lumped into the big umbrella term "(New) Wave". However, the usage of the word "Gothic Rock" can be traced back into the late 70s as it was used by the british press to describe the mood and athmosphere of Joy Divions' music (which today aren't even considered as a Goth band but more as its precursors). But nobody used the term outside of media and music reviews until maybe the mid to late 80s (there is some BBC radio show heer on yotube, called "Gothic" dating from 1987 to back it up). But then there were regions where the word hasn't caught on until the mid to late 90s. Where I come from (German speaking area of europe) people didn't like to call themselves Goths, they were known as "Waver". In the end it doesn't really matter when it became named goth. I see labels more as helpful tags that enable you to find similiar bands faster or as a way to connect with people sharing similiar musical tastes; given the label isn't being misuesed as it is now and therefore makes it really hard to find new bands I might like either online or in record stores. The latter often integrate Gothic into the Heavy Metal CD shelf and it's likely that only 20% of the CDs are from actual Wave or Post-Punk groups. And many clubs in Europa started to tag their club events as "Gothic" and "Darkwave", yet play "Industrial", Metal and Techno. I am actually too young to have whitnessed the 80s, but have read a lot on this topic (I am sure you have better expierences with the old scene as me). I personally think this whole mainstream pseudo-gothic thing started in the early 90s, when after Grunge it became suddenly cool and edgy to pretend to be a social Outcast. And most people thought of Goths as stereotypical loners, who hide in their cold cellar to weep about how unfair the world is. The "Industrial" Metal, Nu Metal and "Dark" Electro trend made everything worse as some people thought "if it sounds heavy and the lyrics are full of angst and the bandmembers dress in black then it must be Goth!". That close minded thinking really damaged the music scene. It puzzles me how anyone can think of it as an evolution or progression when a once diverse and huge music movement like New Wave has turned into Pop Punk, Metal and Techno music, which never had to do anything with it in the first place. Nothing against Metal, I really like to listen to it too sometimes (I don't limit myself to just one genre), but it just isn't the same as Wave and Goth and never will be.
I went to a lot of concerts and did a lot of nightclubbing in the 80's and you're right, I didn't hear the term "Goth" until the end of the decade. Here in the US bands like Bauhaus, Joy Division, Sisters of Mercy, Specimen, Dead Can Dance, Cabaret Voltaire etc. were loosely referred to as "Artpunk" and then "Death Rock" but most people who listened to that kind of music didn't really care about labels or being exclusively part of one 'scene' back then.. Everything from Einsturzende Neubaten to Yello was lumped together into the category of "College Rock" because for years College Radio stations were the only places you could hear those bands on the airwaves. New Wave was a term invented by the record labels to promote bands like The Talking Heads, Blondie, Devo and others out of the original New York Punk scene. (Yes, those bands used to be called punk in the late 70s) However, the term Punk had a bad rep in the mainstream as violent etc. so the labels figured "New Wave" would sell better and they were right. It became a catch all phrase for any commercial electronic pop.
Original Goth came from the Batcave club in London which was open from 1982 to 1985, and where rock and rockabilly groups started to produce first. The darker sound was introduced by bands like Bauhaus and was great to fit the place. Batcave became a genre which once mixed with post-punk and other influences became goth music. Dark became darker, borrowed Robert Smith fashion style (The Cure was not especially goth), and themes derived from vampires, creatures and stuff. Christian Death and Fields of the Nephilim were among the first to move their lyrics towards mystic satanism - though it already existed before - see Marc Almond and Soft Cell for instance. Bauhaus, Siouxsie, etc. remained borderline and addressed other, more standard topics. SoM totally recused being associated with goth and got booed at some of their concerts, though they are one of the most iconic and best dark rock groups of that period imho. Much later artists like Marylin Manson redefined themselves as goth (though the music style isn't the same at all) based on the satanism references, but this is totally a different story.
I'm from the same generation and I mostly agree with you. Here in the States especially, a distinction between bands and fitting them into categories didn't really occur, because most of the bands that were 'left of the dial' to coin a song title from The Replacements, were considered New Wave. Back in the 80's, there were your top 40 formatted hard rock stations that would play the same period's 'Metal/' Hard Rock bands, which later included all the ridiculous Hair Bands. Then there were the other radio stations, which were much fewer that would play a lot of period U.K bands and U.S 'college rock.' Although technically, these bands varied, it seemed that they were all pretty much lumped under the term New Wave or 'Post Modern' rock. I remember hearing the word Alternative thrown around, but I don't think that really came into being until 1990.
The Cure- A Night Like This, Bauhaus- She's In Parties, Star Industry- The Spirits Within, The Sisters of Mercy- Marian, Siouxsie and the Banshees- Sin In My Heart, Specimen- Indestrutible, Christian Death- Romeo's Distress, Fear Cult- If You're Watching, London After Midnight- Sacrifice, Fields of the Nephilim- Preacher Man
My top ten favorite "goth" artists below even though some artists on this list have harshly criticized the controversial and sometimes inaccurate label. Christian Death Dead Can Dance Sisters of Mercy Bauhaus Siouxsie and The Banshees The Cure Mission UK The Cult The Birthday Party Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds Bubbling under: Shadow Project, Sex Gang Children, The Cramps, Joy Division, Peter Murphy, Love and Rockets, The Creatures, Cocteau Twins
I'm here because i recall listening to a song when I was like 12 that I can only assume was a popular song among goth people because it gaves off every single feeling that everything goth does. I'm trying to find music that brings that feeling back
Really good list. I would have gone with top 10 of: 10. Siouxsie and the Banshees 9. Leitmotiv 8. Bauhaus 7. Cruxshadows 6. Killing Time 5. The Cure 4. Sisters of Mercy 3. Empire Hideous 2. Bleib Modern (Quite a new band though, I think formed after this video) 1. Type O Negative (I know... very metal but I love them)
Great list, I really like Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Nosferatu(uk), Siouxsie and creatures project, Cure etc.. If you can get ahold of the original Goth Box with the cd's and the movie you can't go wrong with that. I was in school like 20 years ago. :) Still love these great bands though!

Anyone who starts with Nina Hagen and Siouxsie is OK with me. Some of those I haven't heard of but I like: Lydia Lunch, Christian Death (Rozz Williams version only), Shadow Project, Eva O (and Super Heroines), Lene Lovich, Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Kommunity FK, 45 Grave/Penis Fly Trap, the Plasmatics.

Specimen were kind of a "Joke" band. They were the house band along with the just as awful Alien Sex Fiend for the Bat Cave in England in the early 80's. And anyone who ever attended the Bat Cave will proclaim it as a punk club not the G word :) Just some history.
Born in the 70's and a goth in the 80's, I never heard of "Star Industry". Sounds like Sister's of Mercy. I gotta check them out. I think the last band that caught my eye was "She wants revenge" (only their first CD/albulm) in 2004. Thanks for the upload.
Good list. Check out Cemetery (Chicago band), They Feed At Night, 13th Chime, Swans, Solemn Novena, Play Dead, Nosferatu, Killing Joke, Ding An Sich, Danse Society, Children on Stun, Actifed, etc.
Great list and of old and new , so hard to put into a top ten adore the Nephilim , but the cure at 10 and Siouxsie at 6 , is hard to swallow , no mention of the Damned or Gene loves jezebel or The death cult , and for the record I hung out with Star industry years ago at a festival , all great guys , just don't ask about the roadie and his dog! :-)
Love the list and wouldn't argue at all...there are many others I think could be included that are equally as good but then again, it's all about personal taste.
Mine would be London after midnight- Claire's horrors Fields of the nephilim- at the gates of silent memory Joy division- love will tear us apart again Alien sex fiend- dead and buried Christian death- cervix couch Sousixe and the banchees- dazzle The mission- severina Cruxshadows- winter born Bauhaus- dark entries Sisters of mercy- flood part 1
Saw the Fields many times way back in the 80s.JB's in Dudley,Porterhouse in Retford,Rock City Nottingham.Supported by our mates Crazyhead. You missed Every New Dead Ghost off the list.Lee Hunt mate where are you?
I need some help on to know who I am like goth, emo, scene, punk, etc. I love bands like botdf, falling in reverse, weezer, rage against the machine, hole.. so yeah (not me currently in my photo btw)
So I am somewhat confused. The best definition I have of Goth rock is: a subgenre of Rock which uses dark atmospheres with medium tempo, clean vocals, ussual rock instrumentation with ocassional use of synths and electronics. Would this be correct? O.o
Perhaps not "GOTH" but in the same vein (pun intended). Other than the aforementioned in this thread-try The Cranes. The Lucy Show. The Church.Vicious Pink (just for fun). Cocteau Twins. The Swans. Tones on Tail (Bastard child of Bauhaus!). The Creatures (Siouxsie side project, but stop after Boomerang!) I could go on, but memory fails me. Enjoy these little gems!
Malaise (swedish goth band) seems cool 2)...Project Pitchfork, 2012's With Sympathy by Ministry, Orgy, The Birthday Massacre, and Phantogram may not all be goth but they r pretty cool 2
Your're welcome...

I'm trying to find music that brings that feeling back
Yes, I love your choices a lot better than most top ten goth bands videos. Yours was and is by far the best!🙃
YES , perfect choices, especially number one. You definitely have sophisticated taste when it comes to your music.
I’m just starting goth and this was helpful. It helped me find new wonderful songs ☺️💃
If you want a fucking great gothic band listen to The Birthday Massacre all of their songs are pure masterpiece
I recommend a band called "The Tears Of Blood", they're a death rock band and have an album called Caminho Obscuro. They're fucking good.
Great band choices! I especially love The Cure and The Sisters of Mercy!
This is by far one of the best lists I've seen. Finally someone who actually knows what goth is!
Fucking awesome video!
If you want a fucking great gothic band listen to The Birthday Massacre all of their songs are pure masterpiece
Awesome mix, good to see some of these names.
I came here just to see you included Fields of the Nephilim and it’s on the first place. They’re awesome!
Really good list. I would have gone with top 10 of:
10. Siouxsie and the Banshees
9. Leitmotiv
8. Bauhaus
7. Cruxshadows
6. Killing Time
5. The Cure
4. Sisters of Mercy
3. Empire Hideous

Diamanda Galas isn't gothic, a punk or even a rocker at all-- she's a performance artist and a LGBT activist.
Sex Gang Children and A.S.F your the first to mention. Nice. Peace
the cure sisters of mercy
I have to absolutely agree with the top listing for Goth bands. In my opinion, Fields Of The Nephilim is in no doubt the best Goth band to have emerged. That's my biased opinion.
1. Joy Division
2. Sisters of Mercy
3. Fields of the Nephilim
4. The Cure
5. Siouxsie and the Banshees

@asddf asdqqwe This is the OPs list, they can list any goth band/song they want. Not every goth has to like specific bands to be goth. That is some stupid elitist shit. I don't care for Souxsie and the Banshees, doesn't make me less of a goth.
All excellent bands. My all time #1 will always be Sopor Aeternus. Cannot be more Goth than Anna-Varney Cantodea
Good list, I love all those bands, Nosferatu would have been another good one to add if you chose to make a bigger list sometime. :)
Cracking list, maybe would have changed the order slightly, but glad you've got The Nephilim at no 1. Was also a massive fan of Joy Division, The Mission and Christian Death...
Hey all, I am a Dirge Metal freak and I was interested on a few bands to see if these were some that you liked. Going from terms of least to most heavy: Moonspell, Type O Negative and Evoken. Ill try to monitor this because I am just starting to get into this. Oh BTW if you are going to listen, with Moonspell listen to the song Opium because they vary greatly.
can you list the songs you used? by the way, AWESOME list, just made me even more proud to be a goth
Sister Of Mercy is the king of Goth !
Nts, nothing is like Pornography and Faith by The Cure
I love them but I feel that people mainly only care for them out of all these other Goth bands which makes them not my 1st favorite band
Oh, I am so glad you mentioned Specimen. Only wished it was Sharp Teeth or the Beauty of Poison.
Specimen were kind of a "Joke" band. They were the house band along with the just as awful Alien Sex Fiend for the Bat Cave in England in the early 80's. And anyone who ever attended the Bat Cave will proclaim it as a punk club not the G word :) Just some history.
Freakin' awesome. Thanks for making this video - brought back memories. These are most of my faves, as well.
Christian death is my all time favorite goth band
Yes! Great, really liked the clip ! Music is the greatest invention of mankind isn't it? I'm so chuffed to be a musician!
Im a metal head and I have different tastes. I love dark aesthetics, my own is.. And i LOVE this 💜🖤
Born in the 70's and a goth in the 80's, I never heard of "Star Industry". Sounds like Sister's of Mercy. I gotta check them out. I think the last band that caught my eye was "She wants revenge" (only their first CD/albulm) in 2004. Thanks for the upload.
Nah, Star Industry is just standard euro stuff.
Nosferatu is a very good band in my opinion, give it a shot. Nice list, liked most of those bands

I was wondering when fields of the neph would come up ;)
Love the list and wouldn't argue at all...there are many others I think could be included that are equally as good but then again, it's all about personal taste.
Makes me wish i was you. It goes deep. It goes deeper still this touch
And the smile
And the shake of your head.
For me The cure is goth and always will be....I loved your post.
