When I first started in the goth scene in 6th grade I was really attracted to nu and death rock and despised cyber goth, now I have my second cyberlox ponytail and I’ve never been happier!
I never really grouped pin up and goth together, I mean growing up I saw some similarities but not too many. where I'm from we just always called people in that scene rockabillies or like horror punk people
Kacie W it's roots are in Victorian SciFi art and novels (Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, and Mary Shelley being the most well known influences), and victorian reenactment. Not goth. The actual term was coined in 1987 by K.W. Jeter about as a tongue in cheer word for historical SciFi. I certainly enjoy the Gothic spin on steampunk, but let's not give credit where it isn't due.
Rose Tyler steampunk is just gears cogs and stuff look fancy but not in the true fashion of the 1700s if you were you'd be wearing tons of dresses and stuff
I am a punk and I actually didnt know this. Dead again, I am also a fairly new punk, soooo... I don't quite know everything about it yet. Nor have i built up my punk closet to where i want it to be.
I actually thought most of these were pretty accurate and spot on.....but I will never forgive or forget the Death rock hair cone style like wtf was that
ViolaDoll sweetie pinup and punk aren't even goth. and pastel and steampunk are only derived from goth. whoever made this just threw a bunch of random styles together and called it goth.
Its all about what the Goth community generates and there is such a thing as Gothic Pinup and Gothabilly which are VERY much Goth & Pinup. Its all just another "sub-genre" like Pastel Goth which is Harajuku fashion.
The pastel goth one is usually more horror inspired with like creepy doll looks etc... but i think they overall did pretty good on these other than gothic lolita.
Punk isn't even the same thing as goth, nor is steampunk. And cybergoth and pastel goth both EVOLVED from goth but aren't the same thing. I think the creator of this video should've done some more research.
Can I just say this? I don't dye my hair, get tattoos and have piercings because I think I'm 'Emo or Goth' I have all these things because that's how I see BEAUTY.
Same. I don't have any tattoos, but I love piercings and dying my hair different colors and dressing dark, along with doing dark make up. Everyone calls me emo or goth or scene though. Idk. I don't like being put in a category like that. I'm just me. 😂
Kind of disappointed about all the negative comments about certain styles. My favourite thing about being goth is that you can base a look of a certain style and make it your own.
Exactly. Its like what everyone says, goths talk quite a lot about being open minded, yet they are just as close minded as everyone else when it comes to fashion (and music but thats another topic). Goth is supposed to be accepting of abnormal concepts, non traditional customs, etc. but when it comes to fashion, why do so many of you have your nose up your ass? I wear what I want to wear and I will always be a goth because its concept and components will forever resonate within myself, fashion or not, ever since I was a very young girl. I cannot deny what I am. Yet all I hear from other goths when talking about this matter is "Eww pink?" "Eww branded clothes?" etc etc. Why? Its pure hypocrisy and utter horse shit and you all know it. Just STOP IT already. I don't care if you made it or you bought it, if it looks great, it looks great! However, back to the video; the clothes in this video, well, they explain the concept of these subgenres at least to those that have never seen it. IMO, all the clothes were kind of off if you wanted to portray that subset entirely. But it does the job more or less. I think this is a great beginners guide to types of goths for those not goths and an entertaining video to boot.
punk, romantic, batcave, lolita and trad goth are definetely my favorites !! romantic and lolita have such a cool energy with all the frills and lace, and then punk, trad goth and batcave have a more rebelious, 80s/90s goth look
Okay okay. I am Pastel/Nu goth and this video is... great. The model is beautiful. But the outfits were okay. They seemed very costume like. The Lolita one with the dress and shoes were great. But then the wig and the bow. The dress was so plain? And the umbrella just very costume like. Also the pastel goth was okay but the spiders? And don't get me started on the pin up. But I think maybe sometime you should get people who actually dress in these styles everyday. But fantastic video, is living for the music.
No, no we don't. The wig is styled in a way that really only those doing old school Gothic Lolita would wear it. The bow was okay but not big enough. Where was the jewelry? The gloves? The dress needed more details on it. Even simple Lolita dresses with no print have a lot of ruffles and detail regardless of the style. And those were eh. And NO ONE does their lip makeup like that. No one.
those styles were all genre of goth. punk might be where it started, and the rest of them are just different types of goth. had it been 40 years of alternative style, you would expect to see grunge, hippie, metalhead and all the different types of styles within that category, and probably more types of punk, as well as.
@J A oh you mean the name? This style is called like goth is a person who wears this style and if you meant the one that I showed it's like a haunted doll 😂 but I like it
When I was a little girl (I think 4 or 5 years old) and a goth would pass by, my mother would tell me to ignore them and walk away, that they must be outta their mind or something. Now, I'm just sick of people saying this kind of stuff.
I really like these one too. And if you love music, please meet a little of my work from here, of the the brazilian dark forests. ua-cam.com/video/xLtrxplRUSk/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/CWnjv3xD7_U/v-deo.html
They need to do a part two and part 3 because there are way more Goth fashion types than that. It would fill up two pages if you were to write them all down. There's Pirate Goth, Mermaid Goth, Tron Goth, Ancient Egyptian Goth, Nazi Goth, Angel Goth, Hydra Goth, Matrix Goth, Sith Goth and Monster High Goth and Phantom of the Opera Goth.
Pastel goth and Nu goth have a lot of crossover, I think. They're on the rim of the subculture, though I believe the influence of artists like Melanie Martinez and Tim Burton and their pastel-hued horror worlds helped to really build that aesthetic as a whole. As for the pin-up... I wonder if they meant rockabilly? There are gothic rockabillies out there, but I agree, the one featured was not goth in the least.
This is a very good video....... but the Gothic Lolita section was misrepresented. I understand that this video probably had a budget, so you probably couldn't get a Gothic Lolita coord for cheap. But I just thought I would say that the makeup was not at all what gothic Lolita is, it looked more like a living doll makeup than a Gothic lolita makeup, to be honest.
As a Lolita the make-up kinda got me .The outfit matched all the guidelines in terms of silhouette and skin coverage. They were going for, I think, an "old school" look which is what would have been in production / on the street at that time period. During that era Lolitas went plain-faced (no cosmetics) or minimal and make-up was only a solid element 2010 and forward as Sweet Lolita overshadowed Gothic Lolita.
@Leanna Rudin "Celestia Ludenberg from Danganronpa" is a bad comparison, as that is at best a costume and may mislead the unfamiliar into thinking cosplay and gothloli fashion are related.
I think everything Lolita is shit. Real Lolita is misrepresented and fake. The real Lolita is the book by Vladimir Nabokov. That's not even close to today's "Lolita".
I am certainly not trying to be nitpicky. I like that this video doesn't portray gothic in a negative manner, however, it is my belief, as well as the belief of many others, that a few of these aren't goth at all. Pinup, for instance, is definitely not gothic and has nothing to do with gothic. It's true that some goths take aspects of other styles and incorporate them into their own personal style, but it is definitely not gothic to be pinup. While the gothic style and music did evolve from punk, punk is not gothic either. Pastel goth may have the word goth in it, but it is not generally gothic, though like with pinup, a goth may incorporate elements of any of these styles into their own style. I would say the basic goth styles would be Bat Cave/Trad Goth, Death Rock, and romantic, although as previously stated, a lot of us take what we like from other styles and mix them with the gothic style.
There are also two or three other styles mentioned that, while closely related to goth aren't goth at all, but I just don't want to be too long-winded about it.
Not to mention what she was wearing is referred to as Rockabilly (or Psychobilly, I'm not so great at determining when one becomes the other) if I am not mistaken. Pin up would be more traditional pin up clothing and prints, whereas Rockabilly is giving those traditional cuts a more modern twist. Really it's like 3 parts pin up and 1 part goth.
John Tate, since your comment doesn't show on here and you're obviously incredibly immature and ignorant, I am only acknowledging you this once. I think what you said shows how hateful and ignorant you are. The kind of attention one gets when they dress differently is generally not very positive, so, no, people do not generally dress goth for attention. That theory, frankly, is stupid, and so is the theory that people just get over "this phase" when they get older. You have serious issues and, instead of judging a person based on their personality, you take one look and make douchy assumptions. If you are indeed an adult, I pity you.
Jeez, i was Goth in the late 90's and i loved the damn video..all those styles are supposed to be added to "Goth" i'm pretty sure Nu and Cyber aren't a style, they are a qualifier added to something like Cyber raver or Cyber goth.. pinup and Lolita style are styles on their own but were ment to be added to "goth" as a qualifier in this video.. And props to them for coming up with one single outfit for each style, no need to point out every little detail, i got it, it's just an idea of what it looks like.. (for those who obv didn't get it) you can pretty much goth\darken up anything and make it look pretty.. i think that the Goth culture came with an era just as Punk did and as much as some people get all offended when "posers" dilute their precious culture, it's mostly a sub style now, the true era has passed.. and just like punk is never dead, neither is goth but it's just been borrowed as an esthetic trend and it's OKAY, i'm not offended, so neither should you..
Night_Core_ Music Lolita originates from a Spanish word that means " sexy young" A Lolita is a Spanish hooker who looks like a child to attract older men. Lolita is kinda gross if you think it over...
Haha this is so right xD I started with the romantic period, then went sort of cyber (for a short while) before going lolita, then steampunk and then I ended up at pinup/rockabilly (still there). Oh man, this is a blast to the past xD
I was a mix of grunge ang goth as a kid. My fav outfit was a nirvana shirt my aunt gave me, i usually put on all of my rings and some ripped jeans. Even tho my aesthetic is different now, i love that outfit
Dude. Chill. People enjoy things in different ways. How exactly does one properly practice the subculture? I though subcultures formed of many people with similar mindsets and interests. Personally, I've been trying to learn more about the goth subculture but my attempts have proved fruitless.
get rekt I agree. It seems everyone now is going around calling themselves "goth" when they don't even practice the subculture or anything. They think dressing in black and acting depressed will do the trick. I fucking hate posers
If you're so upset about people not understanding the subculture then maybe you should tell them about it? Like I said in my last comment 'Personally, I've been trying to learn more about the goth subculture but my attempts have proved fruitless'. If you don't want to do that, then stop gatekeeping. All you're going to achieve with that is making people feel like they can't participate in something they feel at home in because they don't participate in the way you think they should.
heyitsduzliv MSP my god can you learn to type properly first? Btw lolita can only be considered goth if its gothic lolita. And by all hell it does not look like that.

The hell does pin-up have to do with goth style?
There is a type of pin up that is considered gothic.
phan trash pinup was very popular in an era. So rightly there was pinup goths.
There is a part of goths that are also vintage. But what they showed was just classic pin up…Really bad video...
I never really grouped pin up and goth together, I mean growing up I saw some similarities but not too many. where I'm from we just always called people in that scene rockabillies or like horror punk people
I thought it was like a psychobilly style not goth
Steampunk is really a thing of it's own now. It has goth roots of course but it's not really goth anymore.
true
It was classified as goth back then though.
Correct me if I'm wrong but.... wasn't steampunk like really popular in the Victorian era?
Kacie W it's roots are in Victorian SciFi art and novels (Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, and Mary Shelley being the most well known influences), and victorian reenactment. Not goth. The actual term was coined in 1987 by K.W. Jeter about as a tongue in cheer word for historical SciFi. I certainly enjoy the Gothic spin on steampunk, but let's not give credit where it isn't due.
Kacie W fuk u
I think the steampunk outfit wasn't very representatiave of what steampunk can be.

Title: 40 years of goth style
The first one: punk
Because it started with punk- BatCave, which became goth, was the first spin off. She gave punk credit where credit was due!
Goth is rooted in punk.
I am a punk and I actually didnt know this. Dead again, I am also a fairly new punk, soooo... I don't quite know everything about it yet. Nor have i built up my punk closet to where i want it to be.
No ,Morticia ,kiddo
Gothsubculture came from Punk tho
Romantic is my favourite, her dress was absolutely beautiful, and Pastel and Nu were quite lovely as well
Cats believe in the power of Friendship I love it too, she looks like a Goth Version of Lili from Tekken
I love the outfit and the v bangs for the romantic goth.
lol anything imitating our cultures and called nu should be ostracized
I actually thought most of these were pretty accurate and spot on.....but I will never forgive or forget the Death rock hair cone style like wtf was that
Viola this I agree with.
I feel you! I was like wtf too!
But.. Honestly if it's not Bat Cave, Industrial, or EBM I don't really consider it Goth.
Romantic Goth style is so pretty, I love it!
That´s the one I liked the most either
It does look a little like a costume from party city, bu if it was a better material it would've been great.

Can I just say this?
I don't dye my hair, get tattoos and have piercings because I think I'm 'Emo or Goth' I have all these things because that's how I see BEAUTY.
This right here.
Dead Wifi and?
Most people see it that way. Saying goth or w.e is just a way of labeling.
Dead Wifi oh, that's cool
I think this is a great beginners guide to types of goths for those not goths and an entertaining video to boot.
i know right instead of being cyber, punk, others style you can make youre own style
well said
same here ^^
No, you can't. The definition of style is to appear a specific way. Many of these, by definition, are not goth.
punk, romantic, batcave, lolita and trad goth are definetely my favorites !! romantic and lolita have such a cool energy with all the frills and lace, and then punk, trad goth and batcave have a more rebelious, 80s/90s goth look
But fantastic video, is living for the music.
that's how goth lolitas dress for like meetups and stuff
No, no we don't. The wig is styled in a way that really only those doing old school Gothic Lolita would wear it. The bow was okay but not big enough. Where was the jewelry? The gloves? The dress needed more details on it. Even simple Lolita dresses with no print have a lot of ruffles and detail regardless of the style. And those were eh. And NO ONE does their lip makeup like that. No one.
i thought it was more gothabilly than pin up
Im a pastel/nu goth/lolita

those styles were all genre of goth. punk might be where it started, and the rest of them are just different types of goth. had it been 40 years of alternative style, you would expect to see grunge, hippie, metalhead and all the different types of styles within that category, and probably more types of punk, as well as.

Romantic and Nu Goth is the best style. Pastel (2:48) and Pin-Up (2:27) aren't really Goth...
How dare you! I'm a mixture of all goths and first of all! A GOTH DOESN'T HAVE TO WEAR BLACK!

I love this video!
My favorite styles are Romantic, Cyber Lolita and Steampunk
This is a very good video....... but the Gothic Lolita section was misrepresented. I understand that this video probably had a budget, so you probably couldn't get a Gothic Lolita coord for cheap. But I just thought I would say that the makeup was not at all what gothic Lolita is, it looked more like a living doll makeup than a Gothic lolita makeup, to be honest.
As a Lolita the make-up kinda got me .The outfit matched all the guidelines in terms of silhouette and skin coverage. They were going for, I think, an "old school" look which is what would have been in production / on the street at that time period. During that era Lolitas went plain-faced (no cosmetics) or minimal and make-up was only a solid element 2010 and forward as Sweet Lolita overshadowed Gothic Lolita.
the lolita outfit was not great but the makeup was awful.
Ikr the gothic Lolita makeup was actually cringey
@Leanna Rudin "Celestia Ludenberg from Danganronpa" is a bad comparison, as that is at best a costume and may mislead the unfamiliar into thinking cosplay and gothloli fashion are related.
I think everything Lolita is shit. Real Lolita is misrepresented and fake. The real Lolita is the book by Vladimir Nabokov. That's not even close to today's "Lolita".
Loved the romantic one 😱
I agree. It does look more rockabilly. I can usually tell the difference, but it's so hard for me to try to put into words ^.^

Sarah Fore don't fucking call yourself goth unless you practice the subculture
Dude. Chill.
People enjoy things in different ways.
How exactly does one properly practice the subculture? I though subcultures formed of many people with similar mindsets and interests.
Personally, I've been trying to learn more about the goth subculture but my attempts have proved fruitless.
get rekt And this is an example of why some people don't try to embrace other lifestyles they feel a calling to. Your attitude is fucking horrendous.
get rekt I agree.
