Simon has a whole series of videos on his channel using his stamping foam and he answers any question you can possibly think of for getting great results. It's a good idea to watch them. He uses all sorts of mediums on the sponge as far as coloring, and uses everything you can think of for the texture impressions. The things that stuck with me about using it are: (1) Simon tapes the foam to a stamping block that is slightly larger than the foam, it evens out the pressure when making impressions, (2) you have to work FAST with it! Have all your tools at the ready, heat the foam and *immediately* press it against the surface you want to make an impression of and use a very firm even pressure. No hesitating! (3) as far as using water, Simon uses a continuous fine spray mister, holds the stamp away from about 12 inches or so, and gives the foam 2-3 quick downward sprays using a smooth sweeping motion. No hosing down the foam, you just want to gently dampen it. That's how to get best results.
Most of the time he sprays it once.
This is not a new tool. This tool was popular 20-30 years ago. We would make impressions off of anything ad everything. The only difference was, we didn’t use water until the third or fourth imprint from the same inking. I think one trick is to make the impression as soon as you can after heating. The hotter the tool, the better the impression.
Have fun.
Used a children’s bath toy as a substitute for it, too. Magic blocks? I have it still, but not the packaging. Have used it over the years, too. Frequently use it to get the obverse I think it’s called of my stamps - if u press your stamp into it, u have sort of the silhouette. I’m thinking it was a Posh product last time Ranger marketed it? I just don’t remember clearly! TFS.
I agree. This is not new but it is fun to revisit the oldies but goodies.
Yup - Clearsnap made them. They made Color Box pigment inks too.
@@99zanne Clearsnap.
@@ebriggs3498 Yes, and I still use my color box pigment inks and pads. Not all of the pads have held up, but the reinkers have, and I use uninked pads with those. I’m carefully not thinking how long ago I bought those! I still have a few of their stamps, too, but I have mostly unmounted them. TY.
Frond is what the palm leaf is called.
I love watching you try new things.
I used this foam pad with snowflakes impressed for my Christmas thank you notes. I found it worked best for me not using any water but stamped directly to paper. Speed is also a factor. Quickly moving from heated pad to object to be pressed. Fun tool to work with! Also, Simon mists his foam very lightly from about 15” inches or so and 3 times.
I have been playing with this a bit now and really like it! There are so many options to try. 😀 I think it works best when attached to a firm surface like an acrylic block, dye inks applied evenly and a light misting with water. Natasha Foote has a super video using 3D embossing folders with the foam and layers of ink that yield a great result. Thanks for sharing your experiments!! 🙏🏼😀💗
Love the palm frond, including the first one! I have some original Magic Stamps someone gave me - same product but blue - and also got the new foam from Ranger. It’s really fun, and water doesn’t have to be used - just like any stamp!
I like impressing the edges for patterned stripes. You can even impress more than one edge at a time so you can go back and forth with alternating stripes without stopping to make a new impression. Efficient though I get inky hands (the badge of a stamper).
Great tips, Justine - thanks! Here's another tip: an empty (cleaned) nasal spray bottle gives VERY fine mist, just enough for a good impression.
Thx 4 that!! I have a couplw of old ones somewhere thx!
So good to see the experiments, including the ones that didn't work well. Most videos only share the best results, which can cause the rest of us to give up when we have "epic fails" instead of instant successes.
Personally, I thought the "fails" could be utilized too. No waste!! lol.
OMG Justine WOW. I’ve watched Simon use his stamping foam and the results was perfection and I am always in awe of his creation…but have thought gosh I’d never be able to do that!!! Well my dear you so have changed my thinking majorly and it’s for a lot of reasons!! You tried it for the first time on video…..doesn’t get any more tried and true than this and got to see exactly what happens and why and the fix……your foam stamping pieces are magnificent I am so in jaw dropping awe. I mean you’ve always been up front about everything and so I knew this share was either going to be a Thumbs up or a thumbs down or a well not a bad thing but not sure how often I’ll use so maybe a pass…..so thanks you for all you did a the way you did it as I’m sold and being a die hard scrapper I totally can see making beautiful background etc……I just love your ways of sharing for, you are so gosh dar brilliant and ingenious and you’ve thought of everything!! Thanks for your Outstanding Tutorial and sharing your Tremendously Terrific Tips, Tricks & Techniques!! I truly hope Simon sees your video because he’s so genuine and I think he’ll love watching you…ummm maybe he’s already a viewer of yours. LOL!! YOU so ROCK!!!!
Joan Smith
I remember doing this technique years ago with fun foam, obviously it's thinner than this but it works brilliantly and I used to stick it on an acrylic block with a bit of glue stick.
I've been waiting for this exact video for 4 years.
I had some 3×3 blocks of this foam stuck in my craft supplies. I tried carving stamps out of it & put it back in the drawer. This foam is used in all sorts of packaging & places. Keep your eyes open I have amassed a strange collection of shapes & sizes.
I purchased this tool the first time I saw Simon using it. I have yet to use it. You have given me inspiration, Justine. Your experiments are all useable. Even the first one. Thank you so much for this video. ❤️🇨🇦
I liked the texture of my sweater! And my mosaic table top, the cork tile on my wall,.... it's quite addictive.
Simon tapes his foam to a stamp block - helps get even pressure when you make he impression 🙂
And don’t forget to experiment with Both sides of your embossing folders!
BTW, I LOVE 💕 that you didn’t just show results that you liked the most. Kudos!
I'm not sure about Simon's version of foam stamps but I still have the 8 packs of blue stamping foam that does the same thing. It's a product that came out about 10 years ago and mine are still in great condition. I am able to use both sides of mine. Regular household objects like buttons, string, textured glass or plates make great backgrounds. backgrounds as well. I also found that the thin fun foam can also be heated and impressed although that's a little more permanent in that the texture doesn't completely fade when reheated. Enjoy. They're a lot of fun and good for kids (with supervision of course).
Thanks for sharing Justine. You reminded me to use a craft supply I've had a lot of fun with in the past.
I have an old PartyLite Candle jar that hold my paintbrushes, it has a woodgrain texture ... hmmm with that work? Yes! Yes it does!
I also use one of my grandmothers old crystal pickle dishes as a watercolour paint palette, it has a very interesting design on the bottom. [The "facing up side is smooth and clear and gives an excellent view of the colours while in use]. That also works great with this foam.
So add glass and crystal to the list of items to make impressions from.
2:29 Word you're looking for is "frond". These look fantastic; product seems very versatile.
The"leaf" of a palm tree is a frond great video.
I did buy this but haven’t used it yet, although I’m anxious to do so. Simon now often uses a loop of tape to attach a (thin-ish) stamp block, the same size or slightly larger, to one side of the foam, so he gets more even pressure when stamping, although sometimes uneven pressure is more interesting. Boy, was that sentence run-on and convoluted!
There was something like this a while ago and I used it a little. This is a new and improved version. I don’t have the old one, but will probably get this new one. Thanks for sharing your experiments with us.
I love this tool, you just want to try everything. The distress sprayer gives more abstract. Try one of those ultra fine mister sprays if you want a touch more detail control
I figured out that the finer the water mist the better the results. The Distress sprayer is not fine enough. Simon uses a fine mist sprayer.
Hi Justine. I did buy these after I saw Simon Hurley using them. I didn’t have success the first time but will try again but I know they’re definitely worth it. Thank you for your video. It was very helpful. Happy Valentine’s Day and happy crafting. 😊❤️
great video!! thanks for using my Mandala stencil! funny I resisted buying it and I also have a video planned in a few weeks... great techniques shown!
Hi Justine. Hello from Southern Ontario! I enjoy watching your videos. Just learned you are a fellow Canadian.
You are from Northern Canada? I did not know that. I am from Alberta , Canada. :) I really enjoy your videos. You are very clear and honest.
Beautiful backgrounds 🥰 great demo Justin ❤ thanks for sharing and have fun playing with your new tool Hugs xx
I bought them a while back and haven't used them. Now I will for sure.
Great demo! Thank you for testing all of those materials and methods for me! I've had those foams for quite awhile now, but I tend to forget I have them and how useful they are. Now you've got me wanting to "play" with them again. 😎
Hi Justine I love your video I have a few ideas if you would like to try them. Eg. Fork lay it down and then press firmly/ slotted spoon with drainage holes in it press firmly/ mini portable plastic fan push onto foam/ cane basket push firmly down onto item. Interesting fake plants 🪴 look nice too.
Hi Justine OKK I just did it!! I clicked on your Link to Ellen Hutson LLC and bought the Stamping Foam I'm so excited ....so Again Thanks so much for your Tried and True Share. YOU MADE MY DAY!! OH YES YOU SO ROCK!!!!
HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!!!!
Joan Smith
Thanks so much for this video. I have been wondering if this really works. You answered a lot of my questions.
Everything old is new again it seems! Don’t know if you can still find them but they used to make this foam in shapes for kids to play with and it worked the same way. I have circles and triangles and squares, etc. If interested you might look in the toy section of Target or Walmart to see if this still exists. Maybe Amazon…didn’t think to look. Some stamp company sold a rectangle cut into shapes that fit together like a jigsaw puzzle.
Thanks for the detailed review of this foam! I have been debating on whether to purchase, and you have convinced me it’s a good versatile tool.
Justine, try it with lace, paper doilies, and die cuts. Works great.
Perfect timing! Mine is being delivered this week. Thanks so much for all the helpful hints!🙂❤️
Thanks so much for the great ideas using this type of product - endless possibilities and a lot of fun! 😀 Have been looking at it for a while and wanted to try it, but wasn’t sure how good I would be with it. Apparently you can also do the same (same heat and reheat process) with the black back of Rangers Cut n Dry, so will give that a try first as I have some.
Great tool! Thank you for sharing. 😊
I think this tool looks like it could be a lot of fun, just to play around with, like you said just to play with…. Coming to you today from Washington state
Thanks, Justine. Great to see your ideas. One other thought:it might be great on a gel plate, so the design is no longer reversed.
Justine, I love the stamping foam so much that I bought 10 bags of them! I only got one of the recent heart shape one. I wanted to see how I liked that style before committing to it. #yourethebestjustine
I love this! I think your video is the clearest in showing how to use this in different ways. Watching you play with this, and making backgrounds, is one of my ways to relax my mind and/or try to get out of a rut. I keep lots of paper on hand for it. The expense of the paper pays off in the end. (Especially the Specialty Stamping paper! Distress blinding on it is soooo smooth). What paper are you using? and PS: is that shirt the kind that has the thumb hole thing? It’s really cute with the sleeve turned up!
been considering buying this but didn't want another unused tool in my room but I think this is a go for it tool
I love stamping foam. Unpredictable isn't always bad! I found less water is best.
I watched the creator of this foam demonstrate the tool and I do not remember him using water before stamping. i have used the tool, myself, and also, did not use water and it worked much better than what I say on this video.
This was so fun, thank you so much for sharing, I've seen that product before but like you, I had a bunch of questions, so thank you so much for your amazing review! 😊
Years ago I bought a Colorbox Magic Stamp foam. It does not say to spritz water before stamping. I wonder if you would have had more distinct results with the Simon Hurley foam if you didn't use water spritzing.
That's the brand name I have. I just couldn't remember Colorbox and was too lazy to get up and find my package.
Simon uses an acrylic block on the back of the stamping foam to make a good impression
Justine, I don’t remember who it was, but I seem to remember someone using Simon’s tool, where they spritzed the water into the air and waved the foam tool through it. It might have been a dream🤣 but I think when I have time I’m going to try it. I love your honest review😀
I wonder if I could line it up correctly if I can emboss lightly moistened cardstock with embossing folder...then use the foam in the exact same spot on the folder to get the deboss impression add a different color ink to it and press.
If it can be done... wouldn't it color the un inked areas of the embossed cardstock?
Follow me?
I hope I texted that out right.
Wonderful video! How do I find the bonus 3 technique video? Thank you.
Perfect for shabby chic looks. When using metallic ink it might make vintage images beautifully.
Way cool...thanksfor sharing. Definitely worth it.
I am enjoying it!!
From watching Simon Hurley’s videos, I think he put the ink on by just gently rubbing the ink pad always going in the same direction and not putting on so much ink.
I don’t this foam one that Simon H released but I have that’s blue that I have had for years and it is fun to use, I never use water on it and the results are still great. Thank you for the tutorial. Btw I live in concord Ontario. Where do you get your crafting supplies from, as shipping can get expensive.
I don’t live in Canada anymore. I usually just bought from the states though
Do you have to spray it w/ water?
Justine, Simon went around his house and lay it on a throw pillow, on the back of a chair, on a cable knit sweater - he uses a very fine mist sprayer - once one pad wears out, which takes quite a while to happen, you have a new pad to work with - and by the way, where in Canada are you from - I was born and raised in Sudbury, Ontario, then moved to Kitchener, Ontario and now live in Florida - my family are all back in Canada - some are in BC, Alberta, Ontario, Nova Scotia
Good evening. Where in Florida do u live? I grew up in Largo (not key Largo), Florida. I now live in Oregon. Have a great night.
@@amyfouts9781 Wow - I am on St Petersburg, FL
I know where st. Petersburg is. Wow. How cool. How long have u lived in st. Petersburg? I haven't lived in Florida 4 almost 21 years (since I got married). Largo is 30 minutes away from st. Petersburg. Nice 2 meet u neighbor.
@@amyfouts9781 this is my 51st year to live here
Great experiments with Simon Hurley's Stamping Foam.
Do you have to spray It with water?
I think I need tgese, they look too fun xxx
You know what I think??? lol I think that everything old is new again. These foam blocks are not a Simon Hurley creation, in fact I bought a set of two (exactly the same, except the color) over 20 YEARS AGO! I think Simon was just a tot back then! Basically what this tells me is that old crafting supplies never die...they just get shoved in the back of a drawer until someone years later realizes how wonderful they were!! So don't throw your old stuff away...stick it in a drawer somewhere...you'll never know! I went into my basement and found my old foam blocks, they both still had the last design I molded into them. Heated them up and they work as good as new! Oh and btw, if you're not sure you want to spend the $7 for these...ANY craft store foam sheets will do this, it just happens to be a property of the craft foam! The neat thing is, that if you get a thinner "thickness" (say a sheet that is 1/2 - 1/4 inch thick, the detail will be more pronounced. And since foam craft sheets come in many different sizes, you are not limited to the size of the block. AND...lastly...if you're not a fan...you are only out say .85 instead of $7. Toss it, or better yet, use it for something else. I love it when this happens....and it makes me wonder what else I've got hidden in one of my drawers will come back next. Maybe my rainbow sponges by Dee Grunig...who knows? lol God Bless!
These particular ones are his creation, that doesn't mean it is a original idea. He touched on this when he released them, talking about how stamping foam had been available from ranger earlier but had been discontinued and how he wanted to use and improve the product
I've found the same. That the thin fun foam gets a deeper, more pronounced impression. I also have the blue Colorbox Magic Stamping Foam. Mine are about 10 years old and still work great. Love it when craft supplies make a come back. Only the really good ones do.
My heat tool doesn't have a low setting. Would you think a hair dryer would be a better option?
I'm using it with a normal heat tool and it seems to be doing just fine
This looks like fun!
Simon Hurley uses it by sticking it on to a stamping block with double sided tape. Much easier to stamp that way.
Do you have to spray the block with water every time, or will it stamp with just the ink? What would happen if you used a blending solution with shimmer spray in it?
I often use it without water
Wow, love it!
I love it!
Now I need to find me some Simon Hurley Stamping Foam and a Palm Frond. I only see one problem - i live in Scotland UK, so neither readily available here! 😂
The thin fun foam works just as well. You heat it up until you see the texture get a little puffy and then be ready to impress instantly. The impressions I got from fun foam were really deep and seem to be permanent. I wasn't able to erase the texture by reheating. Because the fun foam is so thin have it down on a Teflon sheet or other heat protective surface like a silicone mat while heating and be ready to press a stamp or embossing folder into it immediately. To use it, tape it to an acrylic block and stamp away. You can also use it on a Gelli plate as it works with acrylic paint as well. Just wipe the acrylic paint off with a damp cloth when you're done stamping.
I have had a pack I would say at least a year now and have never opened them. I wish they were just a bit bigger so they would cover a card front.
You can always use a decorative border to make it look like it covers the entire front
@@twistedbambi2370 Never thought of that. TY
How is this foam called?
Hi
Can you kindly tell the names of pink inks that were used in embossing folder and stencil. Thanks
Victorian velvet and Milled Lavender
@@justinehovey thank you 😊
The tool is ool but do you always have to spritz? Can you just stamp it in just ink?
You are just fine without water
Do you have to use Distress inks or will it work with other types (pigment, dye, etc.)?
Dye inks are fine.
What is the tool called, and where do you get them?
Link is in the video description :) stamp foam
A must have lol thank you
Simon Hurley does not jam the ink into his foam block and uses a super fine mister for his water. Try this and see what your results are.
It's called a palm frond. I think I just might have to invest in this thing!
Waar kan ik dit aanschaffen
Looks like fun!
We had these years ago but they were blue.
I still have mine - sealed in a plastic container.
🍭 So when you say you held your water sprayer really far away... are you talking in the next room, or how far away really 😶
If I create "my own" stamp I truly love and would use like 100 times, then I'm only paying $7 for the stamping foam ? Seriously ... that's 7 cents each use ! damn that's a serious bargain !!!
I could see myself trying out every kitchen tool to see what kind of effect I get on a card. Way Cool ! After watching a few more videos about the stamping foam I'm going to Amazon and check out this product over there 🙃
🙋 Great Nana in se OK usa
I paid 4.99 plus tax n shipping but I bought other stuff so shipping would be divided n got 4 so it’s less than 7.00. I have not used mine yet.
It's seems like fun.
I’m not sure I have the patience!
Cool!
Actually I've had great results...secret seems to be less water...just a mist will do. This is an old product as many have said... can't figure why people seem to think this young guy has created something new! It certainly is fun to play with...
"This young guy" is one of the major players in the crafting business and one of Rangers greatest stars.
He even said that he didn't come up with the concept himself but that he revamped an old product of theirs, since ranger actually stopped selling them.
Palm frond ;)
It's a frond.
FYI, palm fronds
In case you really care, it’s a palm frond! :-)
Kinda useful..but not that ok like i want perfect shades
The way you apply the ink is causing most of your problems
I think you’re putting too much water on it. Simon uses a fine mist spray. :)
Less is more, less ink and less water
No
You are using way to much water, plus a finer mist works much better
I dont like the results.
Justine, try it with lace, paper doilies, and die cuts. Works great.
