    It’s the best fanedit out there in terms of one movie extended edition runtime. Book accurate in story, tone, and character, while still maintaining a sound cinematic narrative, and it matches LOTR in look and feel. It’s my go to for viewing the hobbit now, and now I can finally add it to my LOTR 12 hour marathons.

  • @rockerdax
    @rockerdax Рік тому +25

    I just wanna say that after reading the book for the first time, I chose this fan-edit as my first way to experience the movie adaptation. You say that certain scenes feel very "truncated", but I'd like to assure you that to somebody who's never seen the full-length Hobbit trilogy, M4's edit felt incredibly natural. I had no idea the warg scene was supposed to be longer, or the dwarfs heading up to fight Azog. That's actually really surprising to me, because those scenes felt long enough as is.
    The only thing that felt weird and out of place in M4's edit were the Orcs. They come out of nowhere, without explanation. Seeing them become the main villains at the climax made no sense. But M4 was trying to have a very book-accurate film, and the Orcs don't appear at all in the book, so I guess he did his best with what he was aiming for.

    • @order42show
      @order42show  Рік тому

      Very interesting! And that truncated feeling may be because of me wanting certain things from the adaptation - I think with The Hobbit in particular, there are so many different fan-edits out there that what it really comes down to are the choices the editor makes as far as which scenes to include and which to remove. M4’s edit continually gets talked about as one of the best.
      It might be interesting to revisit the edits to come to a definitive “this is the best” decision.
      Either way, I’m glad you enjoyed it!

    • @MetallicAddict15
      @MetallicAddict15 Рік тому +4

      That's my one small gripe with the M4 edit as well. Still, there are a couple of elements foreshadowing the coming of the Orcs throughout the movie:
      - Orc sounds before the Company enters Goblintown
      - The Warg chase after Goblintown and again before Mirkwood
      - Gandalf seeing the symbol of the Eye of Sauron in Mirkwood and deciding to leave the Company because of it; and then of course returning right before the Battle of the Five Armies
      But that's about it. To be fair, this is a shortcoming of the source material as well. The battle feels quite random because we don't know about anything that's going on beyond Bilbo's perspective. I can't fault the editor for this: they had nothing good to work with that could have set up the Orc army's arrival without re-introducing the (IMO unnecessary) Azog plotline at least partially. I think this is as good as it gets if you're sticking to the book as closely as possible.

      @@MetallicAddict15 You get it! I like your analysis. There's also another very minor hint I kept, Beorn mysteriously tells Gandalf about Orcs and how "their numbers are growing..." when they're in his lodge. But still, while these hints are "enough" to explain the existence of Orcs to the audience so it's not a foreign concept, it is not enough to explain *why* there's so many marching towards the mountain. Balin does introduce this idea that "every soul in Middle Earth will know, the dragon is dead," which I like, and the Azog marching scene does hint at the audience why they're going, but it would be better to have some more set up before this happens. Maybe a scene with Beorn and Gandalf talking about the Orcs more in detail, and then when Gandalf sees the red eye there could be an audio flashback to something from that conversation. It would also help his disappearance.
      In the book the army came mostly to get revenge for the death of the Goblin king, but I think that's too far fetched in a fan edit so that's why I like shifting it to them just wanting to capture Erebor. Same for Gandalf's disappearance, technically he went to fight off the Necromancer in the book, but in the movie you can skip that and instead tie in his disappearance to the Orc army

      @@order42show I prefer the M4 cut - it's certainly the most book-faithful of the several fan edits I've watched and flows very well in my opinion. As I recall it, the Maple Films cut had a few jarring scene transitions and left in a few things that I'd rather see gone, whereas I thought the transitions in the M4 cut were pretty seamless. However, even though some of the backstory and expanded material that was filmed didn't fit into a good book adaptation, that stuff was too enjoyable and too pretty to just be discarded. Therefore I personally would recommend watching the M4 cut in conjunction with the Maple Films short feature "Durin's Folk and the Hill of Sorcery", which takes much of this material and weaves it into a coherent hour-long narrative which stands on its own as an interesting side story.

    I wasn't a huge fan of the intermission and some cuts felt a little too abrupt, but otherwise this will likely be the way I'll be revisiting the films from now on. I always knew there was a good film in there somewhere.

    Solid video! It’s kind if heartening that instead of abandoning The Hobbit films, fan editors apply their own visions to make more book-faithful versions, and making them more coherent as films. That’s different to how I felt back in 2015, when earlier edits used pirated footage which I took umbrage against.
    The one fan edit I have watched the most and would personally swear by are the Chris Hartwell cuts. The focus on Bilbo and Thorin, removal of unwanted comedic and action beats, the escalation from light-hearted adventure to more serious fantasy war film is clearer, and improved pacing was revelatory. Even though the trilogy structure is still in place, these edits make these films into the ONLY versions of the trilogy that should exist. Having said that, I still need to watch the M4 Edit for that purer book-to-film experience, which should also be an option for fans.

    • @order42show
      @order42show  Рік тому

      It’s so strange though - part of the reason why there’s so many (and there are a LOT) is because people don’t always agree on what should be left in and what should be taken out. My biggest issue is that you only have the extended version to work with - it’s not like you can insert new footage, you know?
      It’s cool that you found one you like! I recently reread The Hobbit and became even more impressed with M4’s edit and Maple Films’ version. (I’ve also done a LOT of Hobbit videos, so I’m almost Hobbit-ed out!)

I didn't like the fact that they showed us the entire battle of the five honorees of her over 6 hours or ever how many hours it was the extended version google gets knocked out about a third of the way through the battle and he wasn't even near Thorin or any of the doors he was off on one of the hills Raven Hill guarding the flank he put on the ring got knocked on the head and was invisible and unconscious for hours Until somebody actually happened to start calling his name he woke up and took off the ring he said oh I'm here i'm here so we never did see what happened in the battle he was not unconscious and I liked it liked it I liked the ambiguity of not knowing what happened until he found out the 3rd helium feeling had been killed and how they were somewhat say their bodies were saved By Bjorn. that Dane was now kingdom of the mountain the other thing that I hated about the Peter Jackson films is that glamouring and orcrest were also Elvin Blaze that were supposed to glow blue I just like sting and they did not add that to any of the movies It was stupid it was lore that should have been left in the movies Every album blade that came out of gondolin should have glowed blue that was their nature they were supposed to alert the elves that they were orchestra round they were designed to cut through the thick webs of Angolans children the same children that we found in Sheila the same children that we found in the spiders of Merckwood who were I believe she loves children Or at least closely related to her. just pet peeves mind about the movie other than that I like the first movie was good it created the right atmosphere for the movie I didn't like the stuff with Rattagas too much I mean it didn't mind it but it was happy about it same thing with the White Council stuff was okay and then I'm going to Galdo Gore shouldn't have been shown I know they wanted to get Christopher Lee and him Mckellen and Kate pledge it together again along with Keego weaving to revise their roles and it was cool but it wasn't seen in the book it wasn't until later in The Hobbit I mean the Lord of the Rings we found out what happened at the Council of Arron or I think maybe Gandalf told Frodo when he was talking about the Lord of the Ren to him at what happened with Gollum and so on and so forth but we didn't see the moon in the book we heard about it we heard that something happened but we didn't know what at the time Just a kind of kind of go away for a while and that he would be back before the end. and the barred with the Black Arrow whoever said the arrow was made of iron iron is black but doesn't have to be that thick be much thinner lighter I just painted black maybe the tip was black who knows but I didn't like the fact that it was a huge bolt of firing off of ballista that bothered me a lot Cause it wasn't described that way by Tolkien In the book. and he wasn't on the top of a tower to shoot it smoke he shot from the ground I wish one of the aspects of the above bar that he would have played up was the fact that he seemed to be reluctant participant in the Battle of the five armies to begin with Was him enthralled and thorough just the three of them interacting trying to figure out how we're going to vote up the spoils of smaug's treasure Because some did belong to Dale some did belong to Thranduel the gems were theirs they should have gotten them back and the rest should have been long to the dwarfs it was a nice text by below to do the architecture for his 114th part of the share of the fall treasure I mean you get a miserable crook coat out of it you got a small chest of gold a small chest of silver and maybe whatever could have been salvaged from the troll horde on the way back to Hobbiton because there were more swords there were more jewels and treasures and stuff like that gold that the trolls had found that had some have been taken and the rest was buried by I believe Ballin and Wallen and some of the other dwarfs before they left.

      The link to M4’s edit is in the description. You can also just put “m4 hobbit edit” into your search engine.

    He shouldn't have cut the stone giants

      Oh, you like those? In the book, it seems more like a metaphor, not a literal “stone giants were fighting” sort of thing. I think it is cool-looking, but I can see why he cut it out. To each their own!

      @@order42show I don't disagree that in the book it's slightly ambiguous if they are literal, but going by the literal letter of the book should cause them to remain.

      Well, that’s the great thing about fan-edits, right? Like…people leave in and take out what they wish. I don’t know if there will ever be a definitive edit of these movies, but it’s fun to see all these different takes.
