How To Fix Your Snare Sound | Glen Sobel
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 тра 2024
- Did you know you can get an epic, full snare sound without changing your gear? In this full lesson, Glen Sobel (who plays with Alice Cooper and Hollywood Vampires) shares his secrets to mastering how your snare sounds without changing out the drum or altering your heads.
Glen - or ‘king of the snare’ in this video - says that five different people can play the same drum and that drum will sound different from one person to the next. That’s because a drummer’s touch plays a huge role in the sound, and this is something that many drummers tend to overlook.
Stick position, stick angle, the spot you hit, and playing consistency are all major factors. Your snare height, snare angle and seat height can also affect how your sticks make contact with the drum. Believe it or not, these all make a bigger difference in your sound than you may think.
In this lesson, you’ll learn how to control and master your snare sound, how to play with a ‘relaxed intensity’, and some tips on being employable as a rock drummer.
Enjoy!

Great drummer, and seems like a great dude! Glad you guys posted this.
❤
glen was my rock drum teacher for a hot minute at the l.a. music academy (lama) back about 20(!) years now. just a cool, nice guy who could play some mean drums. glad to see him still rockin' it. so many great teachers i had back then!
DRUMEO more guys like this, he explains perfectly, gives it to ya straight, doesn't play 5 gallon bucket boring speed rolls every 3 seconds. He's so simplistic it awesome
This episode is hands down the most informative session I've seen outta watching about 20-25 of these. No bs no name dropping no ego straight up information shared
Caught one of Glen's sticks a few years back. Definitely a treasured possession. The greatest rock drummer around today for me.
Glen Sobel is such an entertaining drummer!!
I've seen Glen play with Alice many times and met him once before a show. Amazing drummer, showman and a (no more mister) nice guy.
First time I heard Glenn play years ago...I new he was special...one of my all-time favorite drummers...great video... really enjoyed it...thx✌️
it helps me al lot in making my snare drum sounds better
Glad it was helpful. :)
Glen is so awesome. I did not know how bad-ass he was until I saw him live. After playing a 1.5 hour set with Alice Cooper, he then played the Motley Crue set for another 1.5 hours+. Tommy Lee had nothing but great things to say about Glen on that tour. Super stamina!
Gotta shout out Glen... I will be applying all of this to my crap drumming, but in my normal life as a bassist he has been really encouraging to me and playing with him a handful of times has been an amazing experience... talk about a freight train! The consistency of this man's playing is unreal; you have to experience it in person!
Great lesson! Lots of down-to-earth, good topics regarding snare sound. Thanks!
i love the drum sound and especially the added hall on that snare makes it sound phantastic. it has lots of crack but also fullness in the sound
This guy is such a California, middle age pro rocker. Dig it.
Those cymbals sounds amazing too! A run down of them would be nice!
Let's pay homage to the creator of this spectacular drum piece - The Great Neal Smith!!
YES !!!!! THIS IS THIS , RELAX-INTENS !!! BRAVO AND THANK YOU !!!!
Great lesson, thanks Drumeo and Glen 🤘🏽
❤🙂
Glen! You are the best@! Thanks for all your inspiration and talent! I My first concert ( before both our times ) was Alice Cooper at Greensboro back in the ........'s LOL. Awesome job, I will keep the faith and learn all I can from you! I live for live shows. Love the atmosphere of a real audience! Peace brother!
Awesome! Really helpful🤘👍! Thanks again guys!
Awesome! Glad it was helpful for you. 🙂
The fucking camera up when he moves his finger up the snare is the most masterful editing on Drumeo to date. How smoooooth.
Outstanding!!! Lucky enough to see him in Montgomery Al with Alice!
Love me some Glenn Sobel. Just saw him at Rockville and next let’s down.
Glen IS a Monster! Great Stuff!!!
amazing drummer
LOVE a crisp snare. 😘
Loved his work Jesse Strange, sounds like a machine!
The incredibly talented drummer and musician Mr. Sobel. Great video. Btw, watch the first song on the video at 0.5 speed in settings, he is flawless.
master of drumming, one of the best on planet earth.
Glen has that STAR quality...looks, attitude, playing...no drummers ever say, "Dude...let's break down Glen Sobel" just like they dont Kenny Arnoff, but as working drummers...these guys are THE model! You're a star as a hired gun...one word tho: CON--SIS--TENT --magic secret. Glen gets rock drumming and a lot of what he says gets glossed over by different style players who DONT get ROCK drumming...it is an art like fusion or jazz or... Another guy that GOT IT was Bobby Rondinelli...check out his stuff w Rainbow, especially Jealous Lover, I Surrender & Stone Cold...of course anything by Cozy Powell
Very interesting and good video! I'm a big fan of Glen! I actually also usually hit(my sweet spot) slightly above the middle of the head, works great for me!
He lives for drum set 👏♥️
great vid guys!
Saw him fill in for an injured Tommy Lee during the Crüe's farewell tour. His style is different than Tommy's, so that was a bit of a bummer, but the guy can run circles around him technically. He gave a solid performance during the Alice Cooper set (which was the opening act, but totally stole the show).
Awesome you got to also experience his snare sound in person. 🙂
That a guy has a playing Hot for Teacher , the right way with the triplets, accents and everything else with the floor Bass Drum !!! Something to admire!!
Time-stamp?
Very good musician
🤩Glen Sobel🥁⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Very Good for rock and metal 🏌️
Started following him down the rabbit hole in 1972!
Very good
👍👍👍
bass drum sounds amazing!!!!!!
You are a great drummer
Impressive, but can it sound like ST. Anger?
🤔
nothing will ever compare to st anger!!!!!
Hahaha, hit a clothes dryers 😂🤣😂
Yes. Simply replace your snare head with sheetrock.
ludwig vistalite 14x5,5, clear ambassador on top, high tuning, no snare wires.
Neil Smith (original Alice Cooper drummer) is the reason I took up drums 45 years ago so I was pretty critical when I saw Glen during the "first Motley Crue final tour", with Alice warming up. As much as I didn't want to except it, Glen was amazing! Great feel, proper homage to the original, and interjection of individuality. As was the whole Alice Cooper band. I have seen Alice's bands at least six or seven times after Alice bailed on his original band and by far Glen is the best drummer since Neil and the whole current band is better than any I've heard since the original, and Alice is singing better than I've ever heard him.
Totally agree with you about Glen being far and away the best drummer since Neil Smith. Would also say that no-one has come close to the amazing DD on bass!
Thinking about drum tracks in "Tony MacAlpine - Madness"...amazing technique, I love that album!
I used to live on cannon av in abbosford 1989/90 best time ever🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦👏👏👏👏🥁🥁
Awesome! I've always wondered, what type of cameras are being used to record? They rock!
Currently, we use all Sony Cameras. We use the A7Rii, A6500, A6300 and Sony RX0ii's.
Cooler than a polar bears nad sack, deffo an inspiration ;)
What a beast.
Chad Gracey's been doing the 'control shot' for decades now. Listen to Secret Samadhi. I love 'em!
That was cool
I would love to see Daniel Adair from Nickelback on drumeo someday! I've always liked his style
It helps to know some of the advice he’s giving I’ve all ready been working on. Lol
5:15 - 5:27 ... He didn't get the joke HAHA LOL Depp IS a pirate
Damn them toms sound killer
Invite Jason Bonham someday
The Sabian HHxs sound amazing, anyone know the sizes & types?
I would love for you guys at drumeo to have Eric Hernandez on i think I speak for a lot of people here when I say he is a great performer and an amazing drummer I’ve tried to play things like him but it doesn’t have the sound no one can feel like him only one man can and that’s the man himself but I for one would love to see him on here for a couple lessons
Cool

Great video! Glen is 100% on point!. Chops are great but you have to be able to groove and keep it minimal. I've gotten a ton of jobs because I'm able to hold a groove and be simplistic. I've stolen jobs that way too. Unintentionally of course. He's also right about listening to everything and learning new. I grew up in a home where jazz and blues were on all the time. I was also listening to everything from new wave to metal to RnB, classic rock, old school sould and funk. The bottom line is that the more you know and can adapt, the more work you'll get.
when you are a drummer, your very second thinking is MY SNARE SOUNDS LIKE SHIT its helping me lot, thank you
vocês conseguiriam trazer ? Dave weckl?
One of the best sounding snares I've ever had is my 14x6.5 star walnut. Worst, pearl maple 14x8.
Drumeo is like the Joe Rogan Experience podcast... but for drummers

Of course, who replaced him after 10 years ..

What are the sticks that Glen is using? I'm really interested in the grips.
Bob Barnes he’s endorsed by Vater sticks and it’s their Vater stick wrap. The stuff is great. I use Vater and the grip myself. No blisters and no hand fatigue!
drumfanatik316 thank you. I plan on checking them out!
Does anyone knows where can i find that version of "billion dollar babies"? I tried with "remastered" but didn't work ...
What is the first song he is playing? I recognize it but I have no idea what the name of the song is
Brad G .

Thanks! This song rips!!
“Billion Dollar Babies” by Alice Cooper.
BOURBON STREET, when's the reunion? Congrats Glen keep kicking Arse.
I want this for SNARE sounds improvement
I'm kinda confused how to pull this off in electronic drums...🤔
Your ability to draw different sounds out of the instrument will be more limited by the instrument, but you can focus on exaggerating your touch to keep it fresh when you transfer it to the acoustic kit
3rd
My very first concert was Alice Cooper.
Interesting. His thumbs are red from that drum grip. I don't know how in the world that caught my attention 🤷
I hit my leg sometimes too
oh guys, my rock taste began from Billion dollar babies and Hey stoopid. defore I listened to Ace of base and Dr.Alban
Every pair of pants(-1) and shorts I own has drumming wear from left hand lol
Impressive but can he play Back in Black?
Tape on laptops camera. Glen knows whats going on.
Glen Sobel looks like a young Peter Criss
Late to the partybut.... does he look like Ryan Gosling?!
Ok I guess I'm backwards. I have 5 kits and only one snare lol
Second
Pro tip, lose the dog tags... 👍😂👍
I always do rimshots but my main prob is my snare is detuning very fast the srcews comes loose 😱😱😱 otherwise love youre prog👏👏👏👏🥁🥁🥁🥁🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻
Billion dollar babies now ya talking. Neil Smith
Nothing against him personally, but this "showy" brand of playing is just so corny. Sometimes he's just slowly holding his left hand up in the air for no reason. Ok..you could do that I guess. Why though?
Because it’s fun to do.
I think he's in a rock band, so...
What’s wrong with this guys face 😂
Stranglehold- Ted Nugent
Sorry, I won't take technical advice from a guy who can't hold his sticks.
