- Опубліковано 18 вер 2021
- Manichitrathazhu (transl. The Ornate Lock) is a 1993 Indian Malayalam-language epic psychological horror film directed by Fazil, written by Madhu Muttam, and produced by Swargachitra Appachan. The story is inspired by a tragedy that happened in the Alummoottil tharavad, a central Travancore family, in the 19th century. The film stars Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi and Shobana with Nedumudi Venu, Innocent, Vinaya Prasad, K. P. A. C. Lalitha, Sridhar, K. B. Ganesh Kumar, Sudheesh, and Thilakan in supporting roles.
Bhool Bhulaiyaa (transl. Maze) is a 2007 Indian Hindi-language psychological horror comedy film directed by Priyadarshan and produced by Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar under the T-Series Films banner. A remake of the 1993 Malayalam film Manichitrathazhu,[1] the film stars Akshay Kumar, Shiney Ahuja, Vidya Balan, Ameesha Patel, Paresh Rawal, Manoj Joshi, Asrani, Rajpal Yadav and Vikram Gokhale. The film score and soundtrack of the film were composed by Ranjit Barot and Pritam respectively, and the lyrics were written predominantly by Sameer, while Sayeed Quadri wrote one song. The film received universal critical acclaim and was also a huge commercial success. Subsequently the film also attained cult status in Hindi cinema. #Malayalam #Mohanlal #AkshayKumar

The Malayalam Cult Classic. Shobana can't be replaced.
Not even shobhana even mohanlal cant be replaced
@@anilachuthankutty2315 not only shobana mohanlal even suresh gopi can't be replaced. I just mentioned shobana because she was the most important part of the film.
@@frents8099 She is the core of the film !
Every single actor can't be replaced 🥰🥰🥰🥰
What about Thilakan? KPAC Lalitha? They are absolute legends and can never be replaced even in Hollywood
1. Shobana won the National Award for Best Actress for this Manichitrathazhu.
2. Mohanlal enters the movie just before the Intermission, yet he creates the impact.
You forgot to mention about the fantastic national award winning performance by Shobana. 💖
I think it was one of the major difference between original and remake...She has no replacement 💕
There is no need to compare these two films. Manichitrathazhu is a classic film and Akshay kumar's acting is nothing infront of legend mohanlal
But that makes Akshay sir a gr8 actor being able to justify films, which lal sir has done.....I can't find any other actor in Bollywood who can dare to justify the movie better than Akshay sir....
പിന്നല്ലാതെ
Fact💯
Akshay Kumar was hilarious!! Leave justice couldn't even do a decent acting! Horrible. Seems they've taken remake to mock the original one
Ak Tera bap Bhai
Not mentioned Shobana Mam..
She is the soul of this movie . Very poor observation...
He said Shobhana was really good but it was more like a Mohanlal film, he was kinda trying to make a point here, so he sticked to that without going into performance. We associate with manichitrathazhu cz that's our culture, our language, our fav actors, it was ours. For him, as he's not a mallu, it was kinda difficult to relate to the culture and language, it's a hazard to watch an old movie with subtitles, its a given.

Wat review have you watched 😁
It's sad that a lot of North Indins think most of South Indian filims are overly done action movies. And hollywood stereotypes add colour to the "madrasi image". You did a good job on the analysis keep going ❤️.
True
These are the same people who think all South Indians wear colourful clothes and eat idli vada curd rice
Exaggerated humour is a North Indian thing, malayalis lean more towards subtle humour
They have absolutely no right to talk about films, them and the golti industry.
I don't know about others but i personally like all south indian movies even though i couldn't understand the language but i watch south movie in orignal language with subtitles not the dubb version which sounds weired
Felt like you ignored national award winning performance of Sobhana
You nailed it Nona. Being a malayali..i adore Manichitrathazhu..and can't compare it with bhool bhulaiyaa..but now i can understand the perspective of a non-malayali who connects with bhool bhulaiyaa more. Good analysis.
I didn't think it's a good analysis. He just was saying he liked BB. A movie can indeed be analysed but it seems Nona was so scared to compare because he's biased towards BB but Manichithrathazhu is far better than the remakes (it's what you call a movie...others are just..idk what to say...not serious)
@@8dparalleluniverse717 ikr
I still remember watching Manichitrathazhu on release day. The plot and genre was kept suspense and all the promotional posters just had the movie name in crimson against a black background. We knew whe the actors were and who the director (directors ) was, but nothing else. The experience of watching the movie was amazing.
Do you know that the title song of such a content heavy and serious movie is a jolly and upbeat number called 'akkuth ikkuth aana kombil'? And right after that, when you are expecting a jolly, full on comedy movie, you are shell shocked with the story unravelling..... Bloody Brilliant.
The movie essentially had 5 directors. Fazil directed the primary unit and the second unit was directed by his students- Priyadarshan, Sibi Malayil, Siddique and Lal; all block buster directors at the time.
This movie still is my all-time favourite, as each watch reminds me of the first watching- without knowing the theme or having any idea what type of movie it is going to be.
Who all think that the comparison is incomplete without Shobana Ma'am!🤔🤔.
Non- mallu audience will always have problems watching the classics, because it's just doesn't hit their emotions while growing up.
But to be frank, when viewing from a point of a cinephile, the story and character arc was much better in Malayalam version (the original).
Also, emotions need not be compared in the case of remakes.
I think, in this review, Nona was trying so hard to explain why he liked BB more than the original.
(This was just my thoughts, no intention of hurting anyone)
Bhool Bhulaiyya may be good but no one can replace Shobana and Mohanlal especially Shobana she even won National award for her performance . Because of Bhool Bhulaiyya Manichitrathazhu is underated everyone thinks it as original and all the credits and appreciation are given to Bhool Bhulaiyya[ because it is a hindi film ] whereas the original is always ignored [ because it is a malayalam film ]
Yes. That's right
True
Malayalam version was and will always remain the best.
Nona you won’t believe how Malayalis are obsessed with vidamatteen dialogue of Shobhana Mam
I am from northeast india and i have been watching Malayalam movies since childhood … sorry but Nothing can beat the classic, the originality and concepts of Malayalam movies… Bollywood version is good but it doesn’t justify the content and feelings i felt while watching Manichitrathazhu ❤❤❤
What makes Manichithrathazhu a great movie is simple, great direction, acting and screenplay. Every single actor did one of their career best in this film. The songs also add spice to the essence of the movie. I don't think you will need a cultural experience to appreciate such a global metric. Manichithrathazhu has a lot of indigenous things that only a Malayalee might be able to relate to just like Bhool Bhulaiyya, but it nails everything that makes up a good movie, thus makes it better than its hindi counter part. No one who watched the scene by scene remake of 12 angry men would say that the latter is better or I would prefer latter since I grew up watching it. Classics are classics, there is an eerie layer to the original that no remake could ever reproduce. And the performance from Shobana, Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi makes the movie a cult classic and if you watch it again, I'm sure you will understand why.
I think he's saying malayalam is good only for malayalam ppl. He's not realising that language is not a barrier (yes, there's a bit of slang thing...still) for analysing movies. I think he's scared to do that... He's just protecting his emotions with BB. Not doing an unbiased opinion...
The major reason bhool bhulaiya made a big impact is because of the director Priyadarshan. Shobana got national award for that role in Manichithrathazhu and nobody can replace her. Good comparative study 👏👏👏
Priyadarshan is the second unit director of manichitrathazh
Shobhana just wipes floor with all the other actress who done the same role...I wasn't born in 93 but may have watched for the first time in early childhood it scared me not with jump scares but the music and flow movie......Sorry can't bare to watch even best made remake.....
No need of any comparision. We all know manichitrathazhu is the best. It is an emotion. The movie I watched the most, not only me but many many malayalis.
Not just emotion... it's very good as a real movie.. there's artistic content.... Unlike the remakes
Its good that you took time to make a comparative study, but most often Malayalam movies are incomparable. *Manichithrathazhu* is even beyond that...
Yup
Yes
None of the remakes had an actress like Shobhana in it. All those remakes made that final dance sequence look so funny, Shobhana's performance was brilliant and she won the well deserved best actress award as well.
Shocked that you didn’t mention performances; especially that of Shobhana mam’s. I feel you conveniently omitted it as that will make a huge difference between the two.
Well said......someone like Nona who carefully watches scene by scene and not saying any word about Shobhana's acting, its not fair at all...Shobhanas transformation into ghost is the crux in this movie or gem of acting in this wonderful movie...She got national award for that role....If there is an Oscar award for best actress in foreign films, she definitely nails it....
Either nona is haunted by that charatcer(lol) or just making a biased review in favour of hindi one, anyways my dislikefor this...
Bw I watched Akshay kumar scenes, I felt like its disrespect towards Mohanlal character, fair enough...the malayalam one stands out much much above than any other remakes in terms of cast, direction and feel of course...
@@st-qc1ky so true
Mohanlal nailed the auto rickshaw scene 😂
Manichitrathazhu hs so many hidden details in it, even mallus started knowing about it recently.
Malayalee audience will not tolerate exaggerated comedy of Akshay ! Mohanlal in that movie is psychiatrist with good humour sense unlike Akshay who is a comic masquerading as a psychiatrist !!
Yes
100%
Yes exactly... The hindi version too is incomparable... The only thing good about it is hindi one is better than tamil
Why should you tolerate bhool bulaiyya was made for the hindi audience made by the same director...and that too the movie became a blockbuster during a time when akshay wasn't amongst the top 5mstars in the country....
@@17.fardeenahmedfasil-xib85by the same director lol atleast do a research b4 u comment the director of manichithrathzhu is fazil not priyadarshan. and if the audience taste is crap then film also comes crap so why cant we criticize it if the crap is a crap is a crap. and wait u guys still judge a film by its collection grow up dude😂
Being a mallu who grew up in north India. And having watched as many English or Hindi movies as Malayalam growing up. I have to disagree with Nona here, the OG is a masterpiece of a cinema. Bhool bhulaiya while a good movie on its own, falls short when compared to the OG. This not my mallu pride or other ego of sorts speaking. I like to keep an objective view on things, especially when it comes to rating movies.
I think a priyadarshan remake that can stand toe to toe with the OG is Hera Pheri.
But in terms of comedy
Bhool bhulaiya is far better than original
@@mastrammeena328 bcz u cnt relate the comedy in orginal................. Orginal is best
I can totally relate... I just felt everything was over exaggerated which was expected. I never got the feel of the movie as OG.. it took the viewers to a diff env altogether
@@anirudh6386 that's because of the language diff.. I am someone who was born in Kerala and brought up in Delhi.. the biggest fail for me was they tried to copy the exact comics and they got the cues all wrong.. some of it because somethings can't be dubbed from point to point and some purely because you can't match the acting.
Please don't even compare this original masterpiece with the trash remake 🤣🤣
Nona makes a lot of sense na..just listen to him
Which is better? Is that even a question?
Proud to be a malayali...🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽💕
manichathra thazhu was a subtle,heroine-centric ,psychological thriller, and shobhana did a great job.her performance was outstanding
but bhool bulaiyya, which was released 14 years later, was just a usual hero-centric ,over the top, commercial movie (not as much as the tamil version).that's why i love the og version more than the remake.
Tamil version is garbage.
Tamil version with rajnikant was worse
The best part in this video is that dear bro you thoroughly explained SPOTLESSLY as an audian what was going in your mind while watching both the films. A comparison becomes transparent when the one who does it steps in to the shoes of both side audiences. And you have won our hearts by being utmost truthful to your words. Keep rocking brother ! 💪🏼❤️
Malayalam Vere Level
Mohanlal ❤️
Don't compare Iphone with MI phone...🤣 manichithrathaazh is an epic...
Bollywood remake of Malayalam movies is a pure display of what over acting and acting means.
Akshay just exaggerated that's all he can do he can never act like Mohanlal so effortlessly and u didn't even mentioned about vidhya and just told Shobana is good wow what a compliment comparing to vidhya Shobana nailed the role and got national award for it and vidhya try to imitate but like Akshay it was over the top
വിദ്യ മലയാളി അല്ലെ
This chap is on the payroll of the establishment, which is looking to make inroads into Kerala. Don’t expect erudition.
@@anirudh6386 yup
There are many videos on youtube titled, "details you may have missed in Manichitratazhu". Watching those will show you why the original is on another level. Adapting the original to a format that will work for another part of the country is tricky and Priyan has done a good job. But that being said, the original was something else..
Hindi remake was directed by Priyadarsan who is a malayali and one of the second unit directors of the original. He is also a very close friend of Mohanlal.
No Matter what how many remakes come out, original is the one and only epic. The remake film missed the most of hidden details in original one. There are so many hidden details in the original movie but in remakes you can't find that.
Original is always better than remake.Bhool bulaiya was a great remake compared to Tamil chandramukhi but manichithrathazhu was the greatest.Great direction story great acting by shobana and Mohanlal
Me watching your video along with manichitrathazhu in TV 😆
Coincidence
Wish there was more about the perfomance of shobhana mam
An elephant carries the log and the fly sitting on the corner of the log says “phew heavy work.. we carried the log together and made an impact.” This is pretty much how it feels when you compare the original with a cheap remake. However faithful it is. It’s a gut punch and an insult to actually compare the two and do a comparative analysis. The roles of Shobhana, Mohanlal, Thilakan, Suresh Gopi, Innocent, KPAC Lalitha and Nedumudi Venu cannot be compared and contrasted to…. Simply ridiculous and feels unnecessarily forced when putting it up against the Bhool Bhulaiyya travesty. Nona Ji, I enjoy your thoughts and reviews generally, but sorry this was a bridge too far. If you enjoyed Bhool Bhulaiya and it made an impact on you as a kid, that’s fine. You’re welcome to it, but trying to compare it to a far superior and an original film is just a bit too much.
Coz it's our man directing the remake
After watching this, im thinking that any movies wont be remaked in future, because of all ott platform. That will be a good things for our Indian Film Industry
Andhadhun is unfortunately remaked into Malayalam...

Still remember watching the movie in theatre in 1993 n the scene where Mohanlal speaks to the ghost... it was sooo shocking.. later we realise he was speaking to the other personality in Ganga ... still I rewatch that scene in UA-cam.. I bought DVD of bhool bhulayya it’s no way near to the original
90% of bollywood people don't know most Bollywood hits in the 90s are remakes of South
manichithrathazhu background music is amazing, the veena they used is outstanding and classic
True, Johnson sir's BGM, classic
I think nostalgia is standing in your way of an objective analysis of both movies.
My all time favorite movie. I dont even remember number of times that I watched this movie. I heard from somewhere that it still gets high TRP when ever airs on TV.
To me, manichithrathazhu is a family drama-psychological thriller where as bhool bhulaiya was psychological horror comedy genre!
and it was about a clinical situation but in Bollywood it became a ghostly thing.
@@abhilashk.k9929 its same in hindi too
@@NonaPrince Manichitrathazhu is a classic psychological thriller.. The songs are best classic.. Nostalgia periods of Kerala. 😍❤
@@NonaPrince No. The hindi was a not-so serious, funny movie of the original. You can't say a movie is good just because you grew up watching it. The analysis was very untrue. Ppl here generally who comments are saying original is good not because they grew up watching it... it's because of the artistic content.... Technology has nothing to do with it... Original is not a horror movie...they neither intended so
nyc characterize!
I saw both movies... But can never ever compete with Shobana & Mohanlal performance....
Do the 1965 classic 'Chemeen'. It won the President's gold medal and was dubbed in 5 international languages. Do it before Jimmy Cage does it from Austria. And Nona next time you land in Kerala jump on a fishing trawler /boat (from Kochi or Trivandrum or Kozhikode)and have an encounter with the spirit of the universe. You deserve it.
Well said .cant compare both because it depends upon which one u see first.first one always be our best one
Music of Original was a classic effort, both songs and BGM.
Used some of the rare ragas like Ahari and Kundavarali to make the ancient timeframe feeling. MG Radhakrishnan
The BG horrified with just two taps on Mrudanga's right head - Johnson
That was i am stop seeing bollywood movie's. no remakewood movie's 😂
Priyadarshan was also part of the original movie. He served as a second unit director and directed most of the comedy scenes.
I still remember watching manichithrathaazhu at theatres in Dubai & that too when I was in my 10 std with my uncle & his family. The next time I watched with my parents. Both the times it was housefull. Interesting thing almost all my class mates were also there in the theatres with their families. Everyone enjoyed in the theatres as the horror comedy genre was new in movies.
Shobhana mam won national award for this movie
I see bool bulleya and manichitrathazhu its cannot compare. manichitrathazhu is a great awesome movie 🎥 and also anyone cannot do like Shobana character in manichitrathazhu.
Such a biased reaction . And this guy totally avoided Shobanas performance . It shows how serious reaction is this .
Really enjoyed your analysis on a classic and its remakes. I watched Manichitrathazhu as a young child, maybe a bit too young to be watching a psych thriller. Malayalam movies (the good ones) make you believe something like that can happen irl. It would be like if someone were to remake Parasite. Some things transcend language, subtitles etc. Its the multi layered feeling. Not a lot of movies have that kind of impact.
I was with you for watching this movie ❤️🌼
Chandralekha isn't Mohanlal's first comedy movie. He has done Boeing Boeing (Garam Masala - Hindi Remake) before Chandralekha.
He says a lot of not-so-true things. Among many, the one I catched attention was the following: He's saying at that time there's was no much technology but if Manichithrathazhu was done today it'll be like BB.... Like, seriously!!???
Yeah that's stupid.
I loved your analysis. It's all just perspective and the connect . Malayalis will connect more with the original because it was made for them. The hindi version was made for hindi speakers and they connected more to it. If I would see the original now, I wont like it as much as I liked Bhool bhullaiya, because I have seen it before and it is in my language.
Overall, the original is the best and the hindi remake is a brilliant adaptation.
It's exactly a regional, native Malayalam movie.
Each seconds of MANICHITHRATHAZHU really fantastic, but at the same way no one other than a mallu can't understand that..
And one more thing that you need to know is that the most of the comedy scene of the original movie is shoot by priyadarsan only
I heard that priyadrshan used to make Akshay watch malayalm version multiple times to understand the feeling.....you cannot compare and replace malayalam cast with hindi or any other religions.... technology cannot replace talents...
That's the case everywhere like andhadun can't be compared to it's south remakes or any other version.
I know that most of Akshay - Priyadarshan combo movies were Malyalam remakes but Akshay's performance in all of the movies were best
Hera Pheri, Garam Masala, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Chup Chup Ke are emotion of many kids grown in 2000s

The like the line u sent in the end. More than seeing the same movie it’s more important to get that same feel across cultural boundaries ❤.
I do not think these 2 movies can be compared. I enjoyed both for different reasons.
We have seen the movie many times and still enjoys each and every scene bit by bit. I remember my reaction when I saw the climax scene of Manichitrathazhu. It is like "oh ma, what is going to happen now, is he going to be killed", making the audience on toes and then that unexpected twist. Now we all know the climax so now there is no that thrill in it.
Bhool Bhulaiyaa is the best remake.
As a malayali my opinion is Manichitrathazhu’s best remake is hindi ❤Vidhyabalan & Priyadarshan are malayalis & they know the soul of the movie & they did it very well...other remakes are utter flop…One of the fun fact is that Priyadarshan sir was one of the assistant director of Manichitrathazhu😊
This plot related incident happened in an ezhava tharavad of Alumoottil, where the script writer Madhu muttom was born.
Finally some people like you are realising the greatness of Malayalam movies.... do the analysis of Drishyam 1st part and it's Hindi version
Already did
@@NonaPrince really u not even mentioned about shobhana mam she won national award for this cult classic movie whereas all remake actress literally failed to shobhana mam😍💙💙💙💙🔥
You are right. But there is one more film on that category. Oru Vadakkan Veeragadha. Among mainstream movies I believe those two are milestones.
The intresting fact that is , different aspects of the movie like comedy , songs ,etc was handled by well renowned directors as AD to Fazil ❤
The music was better in the original which give more horror feelings than the remake. Sobhana's acting with the horror bgm was much better than remake.
In 1993 this perticular malayalam movie production cost was 20 lakhs and got a collection of 5 Cr.
And I bet you none of the remakes done justice to orginal climax song.
Watch shobana's expression while dancing on climax song.
Loved it...Please do a comparison video on Punjabi House and Chup Chup Ke..
Nona conveniently didn't mention vidya vs sobhana.
The song mere dholna sun from bhool bhulayya was sung by the muscular dove shreya goshal and popular malayalam playback singer MG Sreekumar.
@ansigma 😁. Well. Since shreya reacted to it and accepted it i think it evolved from just an osr reference to an actual thing but yea full credits to korbin.
for us bhool bhulaiyaa was that song, thats it. doesn't even dare to watch it, with that Bollywood masala of a classic
Manichitrathazhu is a classic film... Definitely no remake versions can compete with it... No one can compete with Shobhana, her acting was just out of the world and also Mohanlal sir he is Legendary actor, king of Natural acting
Everyone is saying manichitrathazu is best in front of bhool bhulaiya , But we have attachment with bhool bhulaiya pls don't give hate to it.
Dont compare with mohnlal sir. And manichitrathazhu..

Y u didn't mention Shobana mam's performance... It was Stellar 👍...
Please give kilukkam review. It is one of evergreen comedy movie in malayalam
I feel Vidya did a good job as Manjulika!!You cannot copy another person and she was much much better than Jyothika in Chandramukhi which was over the top in all sense!
Shobana madam was great
@@abijithmadhu1810 Absolutely no doubt about that!!!
Sorry,not even close✨
Now please watch the movie devasuram and Vanaprastham...
You really like it
Nothing can replace manichithrathazhu classic 🔥
I understand the points you are making, Nona! However, purely from just acting/performance point, none of the remakes come even close to the original in any sense. Shobana's performance is mind-blowingly eerie... and her dances, no comparison at all... she is living the character of the split personality. Even rest of the cast in Malayalam original were light years ahead of any other actors in the remakes. I am basically against remakes.... few work, yes like Hera Pheri but most are really unnecessary at least in the current times (expect for those have vested interests in it to capitalise on the success of a blockbuster).
We are having many unsung movies also. Go get em.
One such movie is "Kaiyoppu" 2007 movie, a must watch.
Super ❤️
Your view on bgm of manichitrathazhu was wrong, non of the sound track of hindi came above the original ,the spookiness in manichitrathazhu is the best, maybe for a hindi audience.
hindi version might be good but someone like me who has watched all the remake version ,malayalam still hits the best, Akshay Kumar's overacting comedy scenes are horrible again it might be good for Hindi audience but not for us
Please do watch it again and again...and focus on Shobana only....in each frame she reveals that she is the one!!!!!
