Don't compare Manichithra thazu with any of the remakes... It is the best movie ever made in malayalam without any VFX or anything... I might seen it 30+ times.... each time it looks fresh... It is directed by 3 or 4 directors including priyadershan. but main director is Fazil itself.. It is a must watch movie...

I'm shocked that you didn't know this in the first place, Being a Priyadrashan fan i know that almost all of his hindi films are remakes of his own Malayalam films or his contemporary's. Bdw Phir Hera pheri is heavily inspired from Lock Stock and Two smoking barrells.

Every malayalam remakes are not his own movie. There are some of his movies. For eg, bhul bhulaya dircetor is fazil sir ( fafa father )

Malayalam writer/directors may be even ready for it. However, malayalam movies makers and the viewers have a sync. The viewers want new subject/plot, and when it's on a movie, its wholeheartedly appreciated without any of xyz biassness/sentiments. Hence malayalam movie makers does it and excels.
But do you think bollywood viewers are ready for it? Viewers play a very major role.

Manichithrathazhu is one of those few malayalam movies that I would recommend to almost anyone in this planet.
Manichitrathazhu is a must watch. Mohanlal and sobhana did a great job.
Mohanlal, while usually is a brilliant actor, is completely dwarfed by Shobhana's riveting performance in this movie.
All Priyadarshan hindi films are remakes.

It does say a lot about being relatable to the demographic. The remakes mentioned are well made and for those who have grown watching them, it is going to be impossible to disassociate that while viewing the originals. The local mannerisms, slang , voice modulations and word plays made them the classics that they are, which will be lost in the subtitles.
Sequel of Ramji Rao speaking (named Mannar Mathai speaking) remade by Priyadarshan under name Bhagam Bhag. And Rohit Shetty's Biggest hit 'Golmal' was a remake of Priyadarshan's Malayalam flick "Kakkakkuyil".

Kudos to you, Nona, for your painstaking efforts in promoting South Indian films, including Malayalam films, through your reviews.
However,comparison videos between the original Malyalam,and its remake in Hindi, may not always be apt,because Malayalam films do not have the pan- India reach that Hindi films have,and therefore tend to be made on smaller budgets...and may not,as a result ,have lavish production values that Hindi films have.
Of course, the original Malyalam film may still be superior in writing, content,direction,and music,unless the Hindi remake is done with equal dedication,and passion.

There are may iconic movies in malayalam which are not remade in other industries....One such great movie is "Sandesham"....Sreenivasan, Great Thilakan, Jayaram etc played effortlessly in this movie...it's political-humour movie....and considered as the great political-humorous movie all time in malayalam industry...
Sad thing is all these movies are made 90's or 80's, so not easy to find subtitles for them...
So my advice if you are movie freak and want enjoy great movies in malayalam, try learning malayalam...its worth for sure...

Nona,some of the movies from my childhood were remake of BigB movies😄,but yes lots of malayalam movies been remade in Hindi. Priyadarshan made this move,so it was natural for him.

i went to buy tickets for Dulhan hum le jayenge but couldn't get one and was skeptical about watching Hera Pheri for which tickets were available. Still I bought one and once out of the theatre thanked my stars that i didn't get tickets for Dulhan. also realised it's not that wise to have a preconceived notion. Hera pheri is one of those movies which I would love to watch multiple times.

Garam Masala is a remake of a Mohanlal-Mukesh classic, Boeing-Boeing. Also, the restaurant scene in Garam Masala was taken from another malayalam movie, Aram + Aram = Kinaram. Another mohanlal comedy movie.

Hi. Please watch 2006 Malayalam movie Classmates. It's really one of the best movies in malayalam industry. I definitely believe that had it been released this time, it would have got the critical acclaim that movies like drishyam, joji are getting!
After watching several comments saying "Hera pheri" is one of the best comedy movie Bollywood has ever created, I downloaded it to watch and when I started watching it I was like "What the hell this is Ramjirao speaking !!!"

To be honest with you, this movie haunts me whenever I see it...even though I saw a lot horror flicks in hollywood and others, none of them impress me much as this movie....
And no wonder, Mohanlal nailed it so easily....and proved to mollywood or any other industry, that no one can act like him so easily as he did...

There have also been some Hindi movies that were remade into Malayalam, one I remember is that Amar Akbar Anthony was remade in Malayalam and a more recent one was the brilliant Shool which was also remade here.

Another epic classic , it was a box office hit and record making movie at that time, and it made a re-entry of Mammootty the star...
I watched three bodyguard movies .
My ranking would be
1 malayalam - dileep played the main
2 tamil - vijay was lead
3 hindi - salman actually did look like a bodyguard. That really impressed.
But still something didn't keep me so interested like malayalam. Both remakes added something that's not necessary or was extra than in original that I didn't like fully. But the story was great, that made the impact for sure.
the thing is the main element of bodyguard is that it's a story of a guy who have no body guard elements but think himself as a body guard, that's why siddique opted dileep rather than prithvi or anyone else with good physique. But in remakes they were actual bodyguard physique which eliminated the main element.
Manichitrathazhu is an epic film. Great acting by the legend mohanlal & shobana, suresh gopi etc You should definitely watch it
Bhul bhuliyaa is directed by Priyadarshan who served as the second unit director for the original film.
Not from south but major parts of Hera Pheri 2 was copy of Guy Ritchie film Lock Stock and Two smoking Barrels
There's a remake for 'mannarmathayi speaking' aswell, I have seen it long before don't remember the name, starring Paresh Rawel and Akshay Kumar

Thank you for putting this out there. Mannichitrathazhum is amazing, what makes the originals better is that Malayalam movies use the local culture and lingua franca of the place which Hindi remakes don't pay heed to and so lose out - not to mention the nepo kids not doing justice to original work. But like they say, the biggest flattery is imitation.
"kireedam" was also remade in Hindi. i think the name was 'Gurdish' if I am not wrong.
There are many more to the list l believe . Kyon ki , Garam masala, Khatta meetha, Muskurahat, Dhol, Bhagam bhag etc
Watch Manichithrathazhu, and it's not a full on full comedy movie, but I'm sure you will be impressed to know that a movie like this was released at that time🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️

Bollywood will never know the real feel of this epic movie. The hindi version was very much over acted and even then it was a hit... Imagine! Akshay can never reach Mohanlal's skill levels... And Shobhana can never be replaced. The remaining cast.. A perfect mix.

You could have mentioned the directors of the original versions too. Considering Priyadarshan is a malayali most (non malayalis) otherwise would assume that the originals were also directed by Priyadarshan.

Man you should watch all those movies in malayalam .... especially manichithrathaazhu and bodygaurd. Hindi body gaurd had a lot of unrealistic fight scenes and also a slightly different climax from malayalam.

Bhool bhulaiya original manichithrathazhu was directed by Fazil (father of actor fahad fazil). He is renowned director in malayalam.
Never knew Ramji Rao speaking and Punjabi House was remade into hindi.
And about priyadarshan, he made malayalam movies inspired(coughs..Copied😉) from other languages and then after a while remade that malayalam films into hindi.. great businessman, hardly any originals and still he became successful
