- Guru [ഗുരു] (transl. Teacher / spiritual guide) is a 1997 Indian Malayalam-language fantasy drama film directed by Rajiv Anchal and written by C. G. Rajendra Babu from a story by Rajeev. Mohanlal plays the lead role, while Suresh Gopi, Madhupal, Sithara, Kaveri, Sreelakshmi, Nedumudi Venu and Sreenivasan appears in supporting roles, and Nassar in a cameo appearance.
The original musical score and songs were composed by Ilaiyaraaja. His symphonic score was conducted and performed by the Budapest Symphony Orchestra, Hungary. This was the first time in Indian cinema, the background score of a film was recorded completely outside the country. Guru was selected as India's official entry to the Oscars for the Best Foreign Language Film category. Guru was the first Malayalam film submitted by India for the Oscar.

Very few people know that this film was loosely based on the short story by H.G. Well's "The Country of the Blind". Also the Director Rajiv Anchal is also a sculptor and he designed the Jatayu sculpture at Jatayu Eart Centre in Kollam. It's the world's largest bird sculpture sprawling over a 15,000 sq ft area.

Even the hardcore Mohanlal fans don’t promote this film too much because some people couldn’t comprehend this movie that well. I watched it as a kid and didn’t like it as I was so used to Mohanlal’s comedy and action roles. But I appreciated this movie better when i rewatched it in my 20’s. The symbolism in the movie is out of the world. Especially that fruit that makes people blind.
Same thing happened to me. I watched it while I was in school, enjoying the best years of one's life happily ignorant about whats happening around the world. Rewatched it after graduation and came to know about the powerful message the film trying to convey. I felt like watching a KG George movie because there is so much to learn from this movie just like anyother KG George's movies. They came up with these kind of concepts in 80's and 90's. Think about it, todays world is so polarised that every one is fighting in the name of God while satan/devil is having last laugh.
Yeah , I must say thanks to Nona, this is a real eye opener for many. I watched this movie when I was a kid and I was literally puzzled and didn't like the movie.I was cursing Doordarshan for playing it at Sunday evening. I rather liked a movie called Sundara killadi by Dileep, which shares a story based on a similar fictional land. But today, I must admit that Guru is truly an amazing movie...

The fruit in the movie was referred to religions ... when a child was born there... they feed him/her with it.... and not giving him/her it completely which makes him/her blind.... similar is the case with religion in this world too....when a child is born in this world a religion is feed on him/her and not completely..... just like that fruit......
And the seed of the fruit is the core of religion, that is the faith. When the outer layer is about traditions and other practices which makes us blind and makes us to see difference in humans, the core in the seed gives us vision of faith..

This is a movie which probably every human should've watched. But instead, as expected, the movie flopped in box office, probably because we all know its true regarding our society but we still choose to continue living the same way.

Kerala society is so aware that you hardly see anyone who are not aware about current news and trends happening around us. I don't think any other state in India has that flexibility.

The movie doesn't say how a woman must live. It only says who a good woman is. You can't be a prostitute or serial killer and claim than you are a good woman. You have the choice to be all that...but don't say that people should view that as "good". Because everyone takes the dark path by choice, no matter how persuading or dark their situations are...
The writer and Director of the film Rajiv Anchal is also the sculptor of the famous JATAYU statue.
When u learn his ideology behind making the sculpture there wuld be no wonder that he made the film. He is such a genius !

The songs from this movie are amazing too!! I ve heard, the orchestra in our land dont perform these songs on stage due to difficulty in recreating the background score.. The original score was done by Budapest Symphony Orchestra from Hungary. They hv used their inherent instruments in it.. And to not mention the brilliance of maestro Ilayaraja ❤
The writting or the movie is great rajiv anjals great work and perfomances of actors in the fictional world did not make over dramattic it was real and natural. Watch sadayam movie of mt vasudevan nairs script won national for the script and great perfomance by mohanlal
If GURU was released today it will even break the records of BAHUBALI

Influence of budhism is there in both
Its a multilayered story and screenplay. One layer is guru's teaching to viewers about how to approach religion and faith. Ilama fruit is a metaphor about religion and faith. When people are so blind about religion and traditions they become dangerous to even themselves, thats the outer layer of the fruit. The seed of fruit symbolises the core of faith. That gives humans their vision.
Guru teaches us to go for the seed when you get the fruit, dont just stop at the outer layer 🙂
Elaama fruit the symbol of Region that always sweets and tasty . And the elaama seed is the guru which is more bitter and taste less that people do not like to have. We all are having Elaama fruits not the seed, thats what we are in blind world.. 👍👍👍 the world class movie GURU..

If u want to watch the true talents of Malayalam cinema u have to watch films of 80s n 90s the only thing that might come as a hurdle for u maybe the technology & the time lag coz it was made in a different era but trust me if u keep watching the charm of these films will draw u into it ! My all time favourites are guru and kala pani. But unfortunately, people couldn't digest it, as it released a long way ahead of it's time.
This is still a really an under appreciated movie.
*Costume* & *Art* *Department* of this Film too deserve applauds . This is a fictional tale that got life . Only difference between male and female costumes were female ones have pleetes and male ones have front opening basically indication of clothes designed based on how both genders urinate . When we speak of Malayalam cinema , this detailing is what we must speak about .

GURU is really a masterpiece..
I feel guru is really underrated movie....back then people didn't appreciate that kind of movies.
This film is exactly a mirror of present world... That wall which obstructs reghuraman's vision is religion, caste, race, money etc...
The change of Raghuraam is something different, it is not at the flip, he was changing and understanding without changing and understanding he is. And the deep meaning dialogues in the first is to make the viewers think one again from the first, and get more or different meanings to one scene or shot. It was a story layering technique, in which so many stories, ideologies, meanings passes to the viewers or read at onece, from one story or even in the shots, due to it's inner meaning and different approach , the movie stand different and it has a different view of direction that is under standing but has high density and surprises in it.

Inside out: depression and emotional maturity.
Snowpierser & Time: capitalism.

I still remember during this period we used to get synopsis of the film in public theaters here in Kerala..(just like we used to get during film festivals nowadays). We had such serious audience then.. But now sadly people are behind mass big budget movies from Telugu/Kannada which has nothing but some good technicians... This movie excited me in the same level like Rashomon.. There are some technical faults but that we can even spot on Kurosawa's movies as well..
