Changed rings on a smoking Honda 200X(3 wheel) by myself when I was about 12 - 14 though I can't remember exact age. I knew the timing had to be reset or maintained if I took the head and cylinder off so I made 2 alignment marks on the cam gears and the chain then I maintained the timing position on the crank by keeping tension on the chain during cylinder removal and finally zip tied it up tight while I inspected piston and cylinder walls and swapped the rings. Needless to say when it fired back up I was quite pleased with myself considering I didn't have a manual and it was my first 4 stroke operation(had done a 2 stroke previously). It ran well until I traded it later for a CR80.

Yes sure, even when the cam is locked in place and the crankshaft on the right point , there is a possibility that access belt length be placed between the cam pulley to crank shaft pulley , and if this is the case you may have bad timing that can cause engine to run bad, or does not turn on at all, so when you mark the pulleys , you need to ensure the same numbers of tooth is between the pulleys , if is not you can twist the crankshaft very little so you match the length, the other fact is over time the belt extended very little in length and when you put a new belt you may mess up the time by length of a teeth , so it wise to mark the pulleys and make sure right number of tooth is in between

Hey, this is a really helpful video. Can I just ask, what is the point of the markings on the cam belt? I understand why it’s important to mark the position of the cam pulleys against the engine block before removing the old belt (so if either of the pullies slip, they can be returned to their previous position) but I don’t understand why the belt needs to be marked? Assuming the cam pullies are in the correct position, does it matter what teeth on the belt align with those on the pulley? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated 😊
