    car timing belt removal on Volkswagen golf 1.4 petrol engine
    do this at your own risk take your time always triple check your marks and triple check again use lots of tippex
    it will be satisfying to do a major job and get it right and save lots of money so good luck and have fun
    A timing belt, timing chain or cam belt is a part of an internal combustion engine that synchronizes the rotation of the crankshaft and the camshaft(s) so that the engine's valves open and close at the proper times during each cylinder's intake and exhaust strokes. In an interference engine the timing belt or chain is also critical to preventing the piston from striking the valves. A timing belt is a belt that usually features teeth on the inside surface, while a timing chain is a roller chain.
    Timing belts must be replaced at the manufacturer's recommended distance and/or time periods. Failure to replace the belt can result in complete breakdown or catastrophic engine failure, especially in interference engines.[4] The owner's manual maintenance schedule is the source of timing belt replacement intervals, typically every 60,000 to 80,000 miles

    I’m doing one of these at the moment, the smaller belt had shredded it’s teeth so the exhaust cam had stopped turning, it looks like it’s only bent two valves, I’m happy now I know how to time it Back up again, thanks for taking the time to help 👍👍

    I watched this because a friend with a polo, same engine asked to see why the belt was squeaking. So I got the covers off and the plastic lower idler wheel fell out in 3 pieces, looking like melted cheese and a big pile of plastic dust. The belt was running on the inner bearing of the broken wheel. He’s been using it like this for weeks. The belt was perfect 😂. Dead lucky, but the two cam wheels wouldn’t line up by just over 1 tooth so might have found the cause of the lumpy idle and borderline emissions. So thanks again.

    Thanks mate. I used this for my 1.4L polo. Similar layout. Mine was the 3 pulley version. One thing that happened was that my main cambelt tensioner was set to the marker point then moved slightly when I started the engine. I think it just rotated to it’s more natural position over the bolt when I started it. It’s only moved about 3/4 mm but everything sounds good (moved to a slight over tensioned). Thanks for video definitely the best out there. Subscribed.

    I did the timing belt change in my Ibiza yesterday. It works fine, but I have only one question - is it normal that this "arrow" from main belt tensioner is moving during the work?
    You can see it at 33:35 .
    I assume that it is caused by changing of the force on the timing drive (because there is compression in the engine) and that it is normal response of the tensioner - do I think correctly?

    Should tensioners and idles be torqued in the right tension (20Nm or 50Nm)? Isn’t there risk for bearing overheating and therefore for failure if torqued too much?

      Yeah I watched your video and it gave confidence that I can change it. Thanks for that. I have done other automotive repairs but never timing belt work due to fear to break the engine.
      That torque issue came in Gates technical bullet.

    Great instructional video! I was looking for a leak in my vw golf 4, looking pretty much exactly like yours.
    Now i did found it was the water pump but wanted to make sure before removing the belt etc. However, i removed the bottom pulley and forgot to attach it before i started the engine.. After replacing timing belt kit and water pump on a Vauxhall Zafira 1.8 16v petrol automatic, car idle is surging up and down continuously. I removed timing belt cover again and timing belt alignment seems to be spot on. I replaced coil pack, but this did not help. I did not disconnect battery when replacing timing belt, wonder if I may have ruined the ECU.
    Initially, I found it difficult to loosen the t-belt tensioner retaining bolt. Instead of using a hex, I used a torx and rounded area off. I then forcefully, tried to hammer in a hex socket.
    Appreciate if you could give me any suggestions why idle is surging up and down continuously after replacing t-belt ( confident that belt is spot on and not a tooth out).
    Thank you

      Hi mate double check that the marks are definitely aligned even half a tooth can make the engine do that and you don't want the belt too tight you should be abel 2 turn it 180 degrees i'd say your belt is too tight double check that and get back to me thanks

    Hi there! I have just done this on a 1.6 16v with DBW, the later engines with the coilpack.
    The car started making noises, I thought at first it was the gearbox, very similar sound to a milk float, it turned out to be a shattered idler.
    I replaced the belt, and I have done belts and engine conversions before, so I was not worried about doing it wrong.
    But since I have done it, there is a nasty tapping sound coming from the engine.
    I triple checked timing before starting it, and I re-done it while checking TDC on cyl 1 and it was all ok, it all turns over ok.
    It still taps however.
    personally I felt the tension point was too low, what do you think the problem could be?
    I wondered if you could tell me if it was bent valves in your experience, it idles ok and revs ok too, and by only turning over by hand, it seems like there is plenty of compression on each cylinder.
    I had the engine jacked up, and I wondered if I could have scavenged air into the pickup pipe..
    Have you had any other issues after changing these belts, or do you have any advice to offer?
    Thanks for your great videos, I watched them before starting this, everything was done the same as in your video and all of your advice aligns correctly with the technical guides and the leaflet in the belt kit.

      hi mate first thing to do is check your belt is not too tight I've seen it when people put belt on too tight and it's cause the engine to rattle and shake if it's all ok it sounds like you're not getting enough oil to the top of your engine but obviously it is very difficult to make that I'm only going off what you said if it is an oil problem check that the oil feed pipe in the sump is not blocked

    I got the same engine and had the timing belt kit changed, but now I have an error Camshaft sensor G40 and Crankshaft sensor G28 incorrect correlation. I changed it at a mechanic. The idle of the car is rough now..

    • @bodgitandleggitgarage
      @bodgitandleggitgarage  8 років тому

      hi mate I doubt it very much that both senses have done at the same time it is possible but very unlikely I would double check the timing marks make sure it has not slip

    • @uniculCSM
      @uniculCSM 8 років тому

      Yeah, I think so, or maybe is more tensioned than normal (can that be the case?). I changet the Crankshaft Position Sensor G28 just in case, and the error is still there!

    • @bodgitandleggitgarage
      @bodgitandleggitgarage  8 років тому

      normally when the belt is too tight the engine vibrates quite a lot car driving ok or is it just idling bad I would double check the marks just to make sure them first

      I have a 1.4 golf with head sent away, nd just picked up the timing belt kit and service parts yesterday. So onto this job next wed's oe thursday. Then I have a 2.0 fsi to do as well with camchain and adjuster. Anyway can you tell me about the socket for crank. I think you said 11 point. and if you did, didn't you mean to say 12 point? Also where do you get the new crank bolt from? Did you change the bolt in your vid?

    • @bodgitandleggitgarage
      @bodgitandleggitgarage  8 років тому

      +James Barratt hi mate seems like you've got your hands full with that on lol yes I did mean to say twelve sided as a crankshaft Bolt it is not a stretch bolt you don't need to replace it

      great. i have some other questions. i have an electric impact wrench
      that can supply 320 Nm of torque, is that enough power to do all the
      stuff in the video? secondly, i tried to find the right timing belt for
      my golf and i found there are two types for the mk4 1.4 16v, how do i
      know which is the right one? my golf has an AHW engine. thanks.

    • @bodgitandleggitgarage
      @bodgitandleggitgarage  8 років тому

      +sexehtaiga hi that impact gun you have I don't think will be powerful enough to take out the bottom crank bolt as regards getting the right timing belt for your car I don't know as I cannot see your car your best bet is to go to the local motor factors and get them to check it out from the number plate of the chassis number of your car

    • @bodgitandleggitgarage
      @bodgitandleggitgarage  8 років тому

      hi mate you've got to potential problems one is the clutch and the other is the gearbox it's hard for me to say exactly which one it is but you definitely have one of them problems

    • @bodgitandleggitgarage
      @bodgitandleggitgarage  8 років тому

      +bodgit and leggit garage if I had to guess without seeing the car I'd say your clutch is the problem only way you can really tell make sure you've got no leaks on the clutch line if you haven't then he looks like you're going to have to take the gearbox off to check it hope this helps thanks for watching
