Don’t let the stereotypical image of metalheads fool you. A lot of metal musicians are highly intelligent people, and many metal subgenres are extremely technical and require some serious musicianship. Metal vocals are an instrument as well- check out Will Ramos from Lorna Shore.

Very cool test for this specific use case -- i think almost a 1 of a kind video.
I'd love this with some live drums onstage to get a sense of how the bleed comes through. That's a big ask, I know, but I think that'd be especially helpful when assessing condenser mics.
I *love* these mic shootouts! Thank you sweetwater, and thank you to the testers!

I think something that’s commonly overlooked with vocal mic shoots outs is not necessarily the sound of the mic but actually how much spill gets into the mic onstage. Especially in smaller venues in front of a drum kit , the spill can totally ruin a great vocal tone if you have to cut out top end cymbal frequencies from it .

David is a BEAST. One of the best vocalists around and a super nice guy, to boot. Had the pleasure of touring with him last year and he did amazing things for us. The M80 sounds good in a static environment but I've never had a mic want to feedback more than that one...

Wait until a singer brings his / her own no-name Chineseium wireless mic to your venue and asks to use it... I expected it to be sub par, but OMFG, it was quite literally unusable. The venue mics were Sennheiser 935 wired mics (we had no wireless mics). The Chinesium thing was thin & harsh, and the feedback was uncontrollable at concert volume, no matter what you did on the board. Sad part is, I'm pretty sure that to this day, the guy just thinks we were incompetent on the sound board and that his mic is fine.

Gotta say, I really love what I was hearing from that Austrian Audio OD505. The SM58 sounded dull compared to pretty much all the other mics. Still a great mic to have but it was put up against a bunch of other great sounding mics. The XM8500 - the $25 mic in the bunch - surprised me the most at how great it sounded here. I actually preferred it to the SM58.

A professional vocalist and artist. You can hear him adapt to what he is hearing without the music. He could make any microphone work. That is the difference between someone with and without experience. Knowing what you can do, adapting on the fly, and not withering in the moment. So many so-called artists in my studio could not do that. Impressive, even though the music is not my cup of tea. I stopped on the video because I now have a metal band in the studio looking for insight. Thank you very much for doing this. Cheers!

👍👌⚡thanks, very interesting. Different technologies, under extreme voice conditions, as if I don't use mics either than in a smooth way for my voice, I can hear very different results depending the mic choice, that can't be found if this kind of test is not listen attentively with studio headphones. I've a dynamic old Shure for sure🤗, and low price studio condensers, also a hand condenser Sennheiser , all that material is low price, I can't buy a more expensive one only if this add a very higher sound quality. So the first condenser capsule one is my choice here, I will go have a more detailed look, price, that's the first problem for me, as I have lot of parts to buy before, as going to modular and semi modular movable studio. Thanks for this particular screaming voices. I'm fan of OTYKEN traditional and siberian screaming band, so experiencing how the mic can interfere with hard demand is very instructive to study the way natural voices and instruments can make profit from different technologies.👌💚🧡🙏😎

As reading the comments, I wonder is most people either hear the big differences between the mics here. I'm not familiar with screaming voices, but I can appreciate ho this guy is testing his musical voice with the different mics here. Very good stuff, I appreciate. Some people are saying this is not metal voice, but, and this not extreme use, meaning for me they are not musicians but mic's cells destroyers💥. Screaming in a mic is the art to not destroy your instrument as musician!💫🤗 As I were tenn lol of years ago, Metal was Shure in the mouth, but the best ones were real musicians taking lot of care to the sound quality. But depend of the quality you can add as a singer, and also, taking care to frequencies interferences, in wich, having different mics for different situations on stage or with harmonics from other instruments, is necessary. But most peoples comments go as always, technical, band pass response, and so, but what the hear is not listened at all in the comment's results. I think this is a real problem actually for Music, as the technology is going over Music Art, and low price giving access to noise makers. In that I'm finding I've no limitation to my exigence, that's my problem, but dissociates from the small internet crowd , seems😵🙀😺👌🤗🙋🙏🧡💚

I could watch these comparison videos for days on end but I always feel like I can only properly test a mic and how it actually would sound with me if it has been around the block for a couple of times. Especially with something more pricy like the Neumann KMS 105, loved it straight out of the box no problemo, but I would've loved to inspect the sound of a used one. find this always very hard to decide plus it's kinda creepy to straight up ask "you can I use your mic please for a sec, I see you have properly abused it for years" 🤣 very thankful for this video though, I feel like with more and more extreme vocals being portrayed in our modern times and people realizing there's something else besides the SM58 we truly need more content like this to make a well informed financial decision. mics become your companions. I've had my trusty studio TLM 103 for 19 years now and I have high hopes that it may outlive me and become the companion of either my loud niece or my own kids one day :D

Overall, I think most of them could do quite well, I didn’t like the sE, Neumann, DPA or the Behringer. I would probably use something like a 47 for this actually. (prone to being wrong if I were to hear all the different possibilities) but overall, I don’t think within a certain range the microphone is the factor that makes the difference.

Good test. My only criticism is that from 10kHz up is the last octave and basically useless for vocals. On the bottom end, a rolloff cuts handling noise, plosive whumps and low freq bleed through. 20Hz flat response is asking for trouble in the real world. The host's focus on freq range importance, imo, is a bit misguided. The midrange rise is more important to the sound. I think I would go for the Sennheiser.

Screaming and fry in metal is a very low volume sound. So needing an "extreme" mic is a misnomer. Supercardiod makes sense. These vocal effects in this video should not be called metal, they should be called grunto. I wont listen to music with that grunto style and I know a lot of other metal fans wont either.
