Here we go BMW fans, this one’s for you!
We’ve got our hands on the new BMW M3 Touring, and it’s going head-to-head against the incredible BMW M8! The question is, can the BMW M8 put its power down in some truly awful drag race conditions?
Before we find out, let’s check out the stats. We’ve got Mat in the M3 Touring, which is housing a 3-litre twin-turbo straight six under the bonnet that can put down 510hp and 650Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox, and it’s relatively heavy, weighing in at 1,865kg. If you’re looking to pick one up, the price starts from £87,000.
Then alongside it, we have the BMW M8. Lift up the bonnet and you’ll find a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 under the bonnet, which is good for 625hp and 750Nm. So it’s up on power compared to the M3, but it’s also well up on weight, tipping the scales at 2,100kg! It’ll also leave a bigger dent in your bank balance, with the price starting from £142,000!

pretty amazing that the editors were able to get a 12s drag race into a 35s race.

@@Tony-oz7os the m8 is going straight to 4th gear, if that didn't happen the m3 would lose without a problem.
It's not absurdly fast, it has a V8 and 525hp, it should be faster but it isn't THAT FAST.

Matt responds faster to the starter, it is a big difference in reaction time too.
Well the other guy is a racing driver so I imagine he knows how to get the best out of the car

@@MrStevieMcquadelmao. Only thing he is a professional at is sleeping on the drop. You go when hands start dropping and not when they are at down position.

I get the same issue of the car short shifting into 4th in the wet, the best launch I have seen in the wet is putting tc back on, also Pzero delete

Top tip from an F90 M5 owner: just start in manual mode, 2nd gear in 4WD, much better launches in the wet...

Gearbox settings were actually different on the two cars chekc those 3 little bars
The m3 was on the most aggressive and performance oriented setup
And also it seems that the m8 had "efficient" setting for the engine during the drage races. 4:50 6:20
Gearbox settings was all wrong in the M8!!!!!!!
@@SamueleDiRusciowhy does it keep it in comfort and efficient mode when launch control is active? Thought it would default to the most aggressive settings whilst active.

This test is a complete flop
I tried in all settings and that was the best launch I could get out of it. When the car is too stiff the shift super aggressive it doesn’t help in the wet. That being said there was very little difference in all settings. In the dry it would have been different.

The M8.and the M5 it was related too are known to have temperamental launch control, even in the dry. The M3 on the other hand is epic off the line.

103,000 pounds for a Bmw M3. Just woah. Prices are soaring now a days. Somone told me approximately 55 years ago they thought 35 cents a letre was a lot.
Have you seeing the M770i, or the XM price? IMO, those prices are ridiculous.
It’s still called an M3 but let’s be honest cars nowadays are so beyond their historic versions. This stuff was super car performance 30 years ago

It's ugly and over priced. Get a RS4 Performance, save £20k and you also have a much better car. What I did.
@@mauricetoussaint7283why would anyone do that the m3 is faster and far better looking. U obviously have never seen a m3 with an adro kit and grille,CSL grille, or Vorstiener grille. I don't like wagons but I've seen some epic aftermarket kits with lowered suspension for the m3 touring. I think the new frozen colors from BMW look the best especially frozen black or white
Not to mention its interior is on another level the carbon fiber bucket seats and overall design looks more expensive then audi for this gen of BMWs. Theres a reason it cost more

Interesting how much of a price difference exists between such similar overall performance. The M3 is the sweet spot in expenditure for sure.
M8 Convertible is really meant to a weekend blast in my opinion. M8 coupe and gran coupe for actual racing considering they are faster than the M5 and have better launch control compared to the M5.
It’s harder to put the power down in the m8 . The m8 needs a driver mod

All M8 come with Xdrive. There is no such thing called RWD M8, just like there isn't a thing called RWD M5 for the last gen.

@@jkliao6486 so 4wheel burn out? The very definition of XDrive means it should b able to handle that torque even in the snow. Besides, isn't it the same XDrive and gearbox in the M3 Touring?

I think the reason why the RS6 struggled against that M3 is because they didn't swap the sides of the road in that race!

@@gripshaft Nope thats a rolling race, I meant a rolling start drag race. It is similar but usually they roll at around 10 or 15kmph to the start line then floor it

It seemed that when Sam was in manual mode for shifting with the paddles, he was able to let it rev out just a little higher before each gear change. I’ve noticed this with my car: when it’s in auto gear-changing mode, it changes gears at 7000 rpm vs when I’m using my paddle-shifters, I am able to rev out my engine to 7500 rpm, gaining just a little more power before I’m forced to change gears. Horrible for your mounts and your transmission though if you do it too much. Make sure to check your oil levels as well.
