- I created this project for an art class at my high school in Chicago. I wanted to capture the beauty I saw in my peers, but it turned into an experiment about our perception of self halfway through when I realized my classmates were having a variety of reactions; reactions that made me smile and made me sad. I hope you enjoy. And I hope you can see the beauty in yourself as well as others.

A lot of people have been saying that the girl at 1:41 is rude, and while how she reacted was rude, I feel bad for her because she reacted in a way where she felt like it was a joke on her. She believes that someone calling her beautiful is a joke, because maybe in the past no one’s ever thought she was beautiful and she has bad self esteem. There’s always a reason for these things.

from my experience, i would immediately think of this as a typical high schooler joke, and I wouldnt be too happy about it.
I find this video heart breaking that you're able to clearly see that people don't see the beauty in themselves and are shocked that someone else can actually see them that way. Kindness cost us nothing and yet we find it difficult to give it away.

Yes, she looks down and to the side, as to escape from the moment, my guess is she`s a person who has her emotions very tightly wrapped, or another way to say it, she has very high and strong walls to keep most out. You can see it starts to breach her wall and then she regains control.....her eyes look like they cry a lot, when she`s alone.

Beauty is a bit like schrodinger's cat, you can't know wether or not it's true or not but it doesn't matter. You must assume both options are correct. And that's the truth, things are simultaneously beautiful and not beautiful, because beauty isn't an real tangible thing you can assume whichever option you like most and it will be as good as the truth. I see all these comments saying "the one reading this is beautiful", but they don't even know how the one reading looks. Yes, beauty is subjective, but these people, or at least some, knew she was doing it because of the views.

It's safe to assume she isn't used to receiving kindness in such a genuine way; very likely she's been hurt by others to a point where she either doesn't think she's deserving of it or assume she's being tricked again or both. Unfortunately, a lot of people come from similar backgrounds.
Despite that, it's always worth the effort to believe beauty in others even if they don't accept it in the moment. We don't know how her story ends, but we can believe she'll carry those words throughout her life, "I think you're beautiful." And the truth is, she's right.

It's crushing when you realize that so many of these kids have never been on the receiving end of a compliment their entire lives.
I’ve done a bit of research on facial expressions and almost every one of these people showed an extremely genuine smile when they were told that. Then some thought about it for a sec and then were a bit uncomfortable lol but the initial raw reactions of happiness were real and were worth all the effort! 😊

All of these kids are truly beautiful. It's so sad that they don't know. I remember the first time I was told I was beautiful: I was half leaning in a hospital bed as I just got better from a life-threatening disease. I thought that moment changed my life.
People have to learn to love themselves more! They are awesome and beautiful and amazing!!
Some don't believe it, others find it strange or embarrassing, some even don't care or respond aggressively. Others are excited as if they had never been told this in their lives. The wide range of reactions there is is incredible. I believe that each one reflects the life of the person individually and socially.

There's a study that these kind of behavior becomes genetic and can be passed down until the 6th generation. Women compliment women a lot. They don't compliment men for fear they'll misconstrue it as romantic attraction, and men don't compliment men for the same reason.

I study human behavior and you can tell when she stutters "Of what?" she hides her face, suppresses a smile, and goes right into "tough badass mode" to deflect it. Even as she threatens the photographer, you can see her face lacks true aggression/there's just that look in her eyes that shows a suppression of longing/positive emotion (which everyone before her expresses easily). "Clearly you're being goofy" to me is her way of expressing disbelief that this was a genuine compliment.
In my opinion, this is someone who has likely never been genuinely called "beautiful" before, and if she has it's usually been from people who have just wanted one thing out of her. Even at the very end of the exchange you can see her kind of linger for more reinforcement that, no, this isn't a joke.

The guzs were objectively far from beautifull, some of the girls were somewhat cute. If she picked people she thought were actually beautifull, she would not have gotten any decent reactions. I love the fact that the girl who said she’d cut the woman recording if she kept calling her beautiful was kept in. The owner wasn’t ashamed of her for that, for she knew deep down that regardless of the girl’s seemingly impregnable walls she erected around herself, she is indeed truly beautiful.💜 No amount of shame will ever hide that fact.

The boy that says „That‘s awkward“ and she answers „it‘s not“ and he simply says „ok“. I think about this a lot. Situations are only awkward if you give them the power to be awkward.

2:51 hit me like a truck, dude. I felt myself being in this guy's shoes, the disbelief that someone thought he was beautiful and the immediate denial. I'll never know for certain how he felt, but with the connection that his expression gave me, I feel his pain as if it were my own.

I was looking for a comment about this dude. I'm a straight male so I can't tell if he is handsome or not, but in my opinion he looks really great and I'd love to look like him. I've seen the disbelieve in his face expression too. That's sad.

@@bernardsoul5186 it's not really like that, the experiment was to take a picture of people she finds beautiful, and she chose these people. the fact they were chosen implies she really finds them beautiful :)
What I find remarkable is how every human being is beautiful in their own way. I know it sounds cheesy and like it's not actually what people mean when they say it but when you think about it enough and actually analyze people's features they always hit several marks of what someone out there finds extremely attractive, be it a minor feature or a big one. I, for one, have noticed that the vast majority of people have really beautiful eyes and smiles.
Fact : When u smile your face becomes more attractive.
The girl that got defensive most likely Is hurting inside. Her calling her beautiful might of triggered something. I know when I get upset my first reaction is to get defensive. I used to be mad all the time but as I got older I finally started healing and now I don't tend to do that any more but on occasion certain things can trigger it for me. She is indeed beautiful. I wish people would teach there children from a young age that they are beautiful and worthy so when they grow up they have confidence in there self to do anything!

1:41 everyone is talking about how rude the girl was but I feel it was like a type of shield. Maybe she was a hard time receiving compliments. MAYBE she doesn’t think the girl meant what she said to her. I feel that maybe it’s hard for her to believe the compliments she receives and that’s why she may have this type of defensive attitude. I’m not saying she has a reason to, because she IS beautiful

Well it's an experiment. She must have sensed it. Sometimes you can really tell if a compliment is genuine or not. Sometimes it's best to give compliments to someone for what he/she's wearing or something good that she's done. That way people won't have to feel insecure about themselves, rather, they'll focus on the things they can do to make their life better and the people around them better. They could take pride in those things no matter what happens to their appearance.
@Ruoshui Liu I agree that it was rude and scary, but everyone has a reason for their actions and decisions, even if it isn’t a good one. I think that the reason here is insecurity, which can be a tough thing to get over. She definitely needs someone to help her with it, though

@@crazy_pyromaniac That's right. It's quite disturbing because we don't hear that often from people. It's basically a threat. Although she didn't mean it literally, it was just her way of saying "shut up, you're lying." Maybe she's used to hearing that from people in her life that's why she uses those words too.
When I was in high school I had school mates and some friends who talked like her. Like saying threats in a joking way. It was funny back then

@@humaidshahid2467 Exactly! I've been called ugly in school most of my life. I had boys that would fake flirt with me then turn around and laugh about it. I had so many trust issues with people calling me beautiful. So, I generally and wholeheartedly know what she's going through.

Isn't it so interesting how people become more beautiful, the moment you tell them they are?
Each person's reactions show how undervalued they were... Where was the love that these incredible people deserved? Where were the people that these wonderful beings deserved?... The greatest sadness in watching this video is knowing that everyone probably didn't believe what they were told. Yes, I'm coming here to comment it 8 years later to say: all these people are beautiful in their own ways, all these people deserve to be beautiful in their own ways, it's not about each person's physique and appearance, it's about each one of them and what they are.
