H&N 177 Slugs Review

  • This is a review of the new 177 slugs from H&N.
    I am testing the slugs in 13 and 16 gr on 34m, 75m, and 100 m.
    The settings of the Impact is 134 bar on the reg.
    What I did not make perfectly clear in the video is that the groups shot on 75 and 100 m are the best of MANY attempts. The other attempts were mostly not even close to the ones that I chose for the video, and that is also a reason for my verdict.
    The tuning of the gun while using the H&N slugs was very challenging and while other slugs can be tuned within one single mag, these took several tries, as mentioned in the video.
    A 5 cm group at 100 m might seem ok for some, but when it is the best group of 8, it is uacceptabel.
    All attempts with the 16 gr at 75 and 100 m are done at 907 fps. Higher velocities proved worse as you can see in the video.
    So this also explains why I will not buy them again. The slug that I will compare the 16 gr H&N to is the 15 gr NSA and it can be shot at 980-990 fps. So why chose a slug that is performing its best at 907 fps over that???

    Peter, as always, great video. Yes, you saved me the trouble of testing the H&Ns; too bad as I had high hopes :( Although I liked this format of short and to the point editing, I miss your in depth commentary from your previous videos- either way, very viewable. Thanks for your time and effort, much appreciated!

    Well timed in presenting this Peter. Thank you. I'm still working through those 18g Griffins that I purchased and while I'm generally happy with them ( they hit hard and do expand very well ) I do find that I'm still preferential to the 13.43 KO's. I haven't tried the zans yet. I'm not fx - RTI Prophet Performance with a short'ish 450mm barrel. The KO's- 980's. The 18g Griffins - low 900's.

      You will love the 13 gr from ZAN! The KO's are still great but I like the idea of having different slugs in different weights to choose from.
      Thinking about testing the 20,5 gr NSA in a very near future 😃

    Hey Peter - another great video. I was really hoping for a different result because H&N are my all time favourite, but this means I'll carry on tuning to get my NSA's tighter with my Mk2 600mm. Looking forward to the next one !

      I really hoped that the result would have been better but saddly the whole proces around using the slugs was hard and not that fun.

      I might test the NSA's in one of my next videos. 12.5 - 15 and 20.5 gr. Really excited about the 20 gr since I never tried anything heavier than 16 gr 😃

    Thanks for doing this review. I kind of felt this would be the results coming from the FX. .177 are very picky. I have not been able to order these in the states as they do not even seem to be up for sale. Right now my favorite .177 slug is the 13grn JSB knockout for me. How about you ?

    • @VikingAirgunner
      @VikingAirgunner  2 роки тому +1

      Almost the same here. I have been using the KO's 13.43 gr for a long time with great results, but since I tested the Zan 13 gr they have taken over.
      Agree with the FX liners being picky 😃 Would love to have seen the 16 gr from both Zan and H&N perform well, so the closest well performing slug is the 15 grain NSA.
      I know that H&N are focusing on the european market bcs of the situation right now, but I hope that they will be available in the rest of the world soon - and that they will perform well in other barrels 🤞

    I saw a video yesterday on UA-cam with the South African Gherard guy shooting his Impact M3 700mm .177 cal hitting birds at 200 yards. He was using the H&N .177 cal .20 grain slugs at 930 fps. It would be nice to see you test those just to see if they are really that accurate at least 100 yards? Great video as always!

      Hi Rob
      Kinda funny you should mention it bcs I was just telling a guy in the comments on this video that my plan is to test the 20,5 gr NSA sometime in a very near future 😃
      I saw the video from Gerhard and the results are really great 😎
      In a thread on H&N'S FB he actually told me that the 16 gr are quite sensitive so the 20 gr could be an easier job.
      FX has a 700 mm heavy slug liner commin in 177 so maybe that should be one to wait for 🤔

    Hey Peter, am shooting my Crown Continiuum in 177 now. 700 liner stainless tube and carbon tension tube. Huma moderator.
    Did change original spring guide, can fit 4 gr hammer weight now. Reg on 150. Stock FX transferport, changed to Huma V2 port soon.
    Hammer maxed out, 2.5 mm free play spring system. Huma power spring
    10 gr Zan at 1169 fps did very wel at 50 mtr……..yep I was surprised to. 13 gr Zan at same setting did 1077 fps did around 30 mm at 50 mrt
    The 16 gr Zan did 1012 fps and at 50 mtr around 40 mm. The 20 gr zan at 929 did around 100 mm ……but there where little cloverleaf clusters with flyers till 100 mm. Shots where all at the same reg and hammer setting. Just had no more time. And as it was the first time with the Zan, I wanted a ‘ feel’ how the Crown did.
    Like I said , am waiting for the Huma V2 port. Hope that the Crown will breathe better with a bigger port. And that it will perform better with a lower reg setting.
    I have also the idea that my liner has a rather tight choke which has quite a ‘ breaking’ effect on the 20 gr which has quite a large ‘ bearing’ surface. Also the liner leads up a but more than I like. Specially in the choke area.
    But I will test more seriously when I have the V2 ports. I realy like the 177 slugs and hope I find a good tune for the 20 gr.

    • @VikingAirgunner
      @VikingAirgunner  2 роки тому

      Those are very high velocities - Im sure that your groups will tighten up if you lower it to under 1000 fps for them all 🤔
      As for the dual hole transfer port be aware that your spread will increase quite a bit. With the 700 mm liner Im sure that you can get close to 950-980 fps with the 20 gr with the original transfer port 🙂

    • @andriessluiter4269
      @andriessluiter4269 2 роки тому

      Did do the reg at 160 but with the 20 gr 929/930 was the limit with my Crown. Actualy I removed the hamer weight for a peek dummy and reduced the reg till 135 and the 20 did 910… with much less variation. The V2 ports do very well in my other FXs. Do not have more variation than with my original ports. We will see.

    In my FX i have problems getting the 16 grain H&N running good, but in my Vulcan 3 deal with them much better.
    I am still going to pick up a tin or two of the 13 and 20 grainers too, but my hopes are not high.
    I also very much wonder how that southafrican guy can get them to shoot as good as he do, i have tried the 16 gr ones in my maverick with a reg of 150 and down to 110 and have had little luck.
    Also on my maverick shooting heavy stuff, i can get them to fly fast, but cant seem to get a proper flat shot string on the chrono, and i have tried a hammer a little heavier than the original one too, even another spring.
    All i have left to try is the most heavy hammer i have, but really i do not think that is the problem at all.
    A couple of days ago i got 5 more boxes of the 13 gr Zan from "GP" my storage suitcase are now filled predominantly with zan 13 grainers and 2 - 3 boxes of both the 16 and 20 gr, the H&N and KO slugs are stored in a kitchen cabinet and the Knockouts i of course also have quite a few tins off, also 3 boxes of 12.5 gr NSA.
    The ALU storage suitcase are so heavy i do not dare to use its carry handle, if i drop it on my foot it will be crushed, 21 boxes of ammo do weigh a few kilos.
    Pellets too, TBH that shelf i have them on in the kitchen, i better not put more tins on there :-) the ones i got from you are still in my car, i keep forgetting them, will have to try again today.
    Going to work ( on model railway ) and shooting Sun / Mon though shooting will probably just be on Monday, and the next weekend also look promising, so we might have our July 4 celebration then with lots of BBQ and single malt,,,,, + shooting of course.
    O ! And i have a new 0.,5 L CF tank on the way, it will be fitted with the valve from the FX alu tank, so all the tanks i use are 300 bar

      Hi 🙂
      Sounds exciting with a much new gun! What model did u have in mind?
      Im using the Element Titan on my Impact and the Element Helix 6-24 on the Wildcat. Both are great scope and they give a great view on 100 m. The Titan being the most expensive is a better scope for sure, but the Helix is defenately not bad.
      I only have experience with these and a Hawke Sidewinder so I cant really claim to have enough knowledge about other scope.
      For honest and prof reviews on many different scope I will recommended Cyclops - his chanel has a longer name that I dont remember, but it is the guy with the eye patch.

      @@VikingAirgunner Thank you for replying=) The gun wil be a FX Impact M3 in the 4.5/177 caliber. I have not shot a rifle for 20 years now so i wil have to learn everything all over again, and i never shot with a scope, just iron sights. So i do not know what magnification thats needed for ~100m. Now that you have tested both the Helix and the Titan, would you pay the extra for a Titan over a Helix if you had to buy the scope again? I wil check out Cyclops channel, i found it and it sure has a long name:P

    • @VikingAirgunner
      @VikingAirgunner  2 роки тому

      @@trulsvian Im really happy with the M3 after I returned all components to stock. So accurate and with a near non exciting spread in velocity!
      The tuning of the gun can be a Challenge to learn, but there are a few videos explaining how to do it in a simple way. I will try to give my advice in a video soon on how to tune it, but untill then Ernest Rowe has a great video explaining it. Matt Dubber also explains it.
      If money is not an issue I will take the Titan any day. But depending on what you will use it for. I shoot primarely at 34 m in my yard and even here it outperforms the Helix. Not bcs the Helix is bad, but bcs the Titan is so good 😎

      @@ChristianoMoe nice that you got it working, but can you streach the distance? Many kinds of ammo will perform well at the shorter distances, but when you go to maybe 75 m it will be a different story.

      @@VikingAirgunner never tried further than 50 meters with airguns and I have yet to test the H&N slugs at that distance. I'll try some 100m groups at the range this weekend if the weather permits it. I just started out with airguns after shooting centerfire and rimfire all my life. I actually participated in an ipsc match in København a few years ago 😀 I miss Danmark...

    with slugs you will have more tuning rebarreling and luck if it will work.

    The .177 caliber is very unpredictable and difficult to set up. Those 200-yard shots seem more like marketing than anything else. In addition, all shooters only show the good results and keep the ideal configuration secrets for ourselves. It is normal after a great effort firing 700 shots. Peter good job. I think it's very honest. And I like the .177 cal. THX!

      The only time that I would attempt a 200 y shot was only for pure fun. The difference between 75 and 100 shows that there is a limit to the 177. I used to shoot 125 m but new I rarely do bcs it starts to feel too random. I dont know with the 20 gr in a well tuned gun but I intend to find out 😃
      I share my settings on FB FX 177 Owners and you are welcome to join 🤗
      Thanks for your comment and Best regards
