Go for it. I also wanted to play violin in grade school but was told no, you need to play a band instrument, so I wanted to play flute. Not sure why that didn't fly either and wound up playing clarinet thru freshman year. I've always loved the violin. So I started at about age 60. I'm so glad I didn't think I was too old. I love it and enjoy playing just for my own enjoyment - when no one else is around to listen to me practice!

When I was around 20, I decided it’s a really good time to start playing violin😆
After 1 year with a teacher I could play some simple songs and the feeling was amazing! So if you ever wanted to play, it doesn’t matter how old are you, you can still have a lot of fun! 🙂
Now I focus on playing the piano and creating yt piano tutorial videos but violin will always be one of my most favorite instruments.

My partner started the violin a couple of years ago at age 28 :) still going and loves learning! He's working towards grade 4 (UK) at the moment - found it very comical turning up to his grade 1, 2, 3 exams with all these primary aged kids :D

I had every problem you said, bad set up, bad balanced bow, so hard to work with always trembling, fancy collection of shoulder rests 🙈 it did not stop me from playing violin. I was quite lucky my neighbours did not kill me 🎻🎶😁 Some years ago I moved to Vienna, got a better Job and could afford to buy a good violin. I have a very supporting teacher now and make really good progress. I am 56 years now, so never give up 💃🎻😊 Thank you so much for this Video, this is really good advice, I enjoy very much listen to you playing, much love from Austria 🥰🎻❤❤❤

I played the violin when I was a kid. I loved it! But unfortunately I hated carting it around on the bus. So I gave it up. I'm now 50 and my husband mentioned I should take it back up. I have never been able to get the violin out of my head! So I am now looking into purchasing a violin. I'm extremely excited, but I am concerned because I have major neck issues! I enjoy watching your videos and listening to your advice! I love listening to you play! Your music is beautiful! Cheers!!

Been playing the violin since 6th grade (don't ask...it's been a while :D). Put it down for years because I never felt like I was that great at it. Eventually, I realized that it didn't matter whether I was good or not, what mattered was whether I enjoyed it or not, so I picked it back up and primarily just play for my own enjoyment and occasionally do a special musical number in church. I always enjoy videos like these. For the most part, they are review, but the reminder to "relax" is always hugely helpful. Thanks for the video Taylor.
BTW - The one thing that I wish I had been taught when I was younger is that you hold the violin with your chin and shoulder, not with your hand. You support with your hand, but if you are holding (gripping) with your hand, it makes it very difficult to vibrato. It's a small thing that I think a lot of instructors take for granted.

You always give very good very practical advice. Took your advice and invested in a more expensive violin and already I'm struggling a lot less. I'd appreciate a video on how to hold the bow properly as well as keeping the bow straight. There's not a very big space between the frog and the winding in my bow which makes it uncomfortable. My cheaper bow had a bigger space so the thumb finger felt more comfortable there. Any advice?

I’m also amassing a collection of shoulder rests myself. I found that with my acoustic violin, my Wolf Primo is the best option, while my electric 5-string violin is heavy and is most comfortable with an Everest shoulder rest.
I’m still acclimating to playing the violin.
I’m looking to videos like this and others on UA-cam for help as a self-learner. Thank you for your advice! It is greatly appreciated!
(PS: I would love a violin teacher to help me in person, but at this time I’m on a 14-16 hour workday and I practice violin at night on my dinner break, when it is quiet. When the summer is here, and I’m back a normal 8-hour day again, I will be paying a local music school for lessons.)

I know this video is for beginners, and that I have been playing for what will be 12 years, but sometimes it's nice to hear someone else's opinion, haha. Also, on credible violins, when I first began, my mother was sold a violin that was so poorly set up that one of the best luthiers around was incapable of fixing it. We just had to start over, which was very upsetting but helped so much.

I don't find it hard playing the violin. I do find it hard to find the right angle to read the sheet music. Not to mention reading the sheet music, with the way that sheet music is is upsidedown for me compared to the notes of the violin. 😅 My improv violin playing sounds good though.
P.S. Is there any alternative written forms for music than the basic clefs? All the black and white tends to blur together for me.
