Terry Kath is one of the most underrated guitarists/artists ever. He was fenomilal! So sad he never really got the notoriety he deserved. It seems that only through YT that he's finally getting some exposure to more people, which is great.
He gets his notoriety from me he was one of my inspirations to start playing the guitar in the 70s. Along with Robin trower. And acoustic genius of Leo kottke..
The first lineup was formed at DePaul University when Terry Kath would hang in the music department and met several members of the future band, and Terry brought them all together. He was the only member that didn't have a formal music education.
There are 7 members: guitar, keyboards, bass, drums, and the 3 horns. Yes, that was an edit; this track is part of a larger suit called "Ballet for a Girl in Buchanon," running about 13 minutes and change. Another part of that suite is "Colour my World," with Terry Kath singing lead on that one as well. The single was an edit too, as the label took the end of the suite and spiced it onto the end of the guitar solo to make it more radio-friendly. I wasn't crazy about that, but the single was a hit.
You're right; there was an edit. The two parts are the beginning and end of a long piece called "Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon". Written by trombonist Jim Pankow.
Chicago is a big band - when I remember right, they moved from pure Jazz to their massive hit: If you leave me now (with a different formation - a kind of commercial 70's Doo-Wop).
They were not “pure Jazz”… they self-described as “A Rock Band with Horns”, but they certainly had elements of jazz sensibilities plus - Marching Band ! (And yes, even today some of their early hits still enjoy widespread appeal as marching band arrangements)
I'm sure I heard Chicago when I was a child but they splashed onto my consciousness with their trilogy of 80s songs (You're the Inspiration/Hard Habit to Break/Hard to Say I'm Sorry) and I became a fan. Those 80s songs will always be so nostalgic for me but I think I love their 70s stuff more. For those interested, there was a great documentary on Chicago done several years ago called "Now More Than Ever: The History of Chicago" that can be caught on Pluto TV for those interested. Really worth the watch if you're a fan of this amazing band. I saw them in 2022 and though only three of the original members are still in the band, it's still a great concert if you get a chance to see them. Music, especially great music, is timeless.
saw Chicago live in the 80's. fantastic. But, Chicago AND Earth, Wind and Fire did joint concerts, where they took turns but also played together at beginning and end. Two full bands with 'similar' music, 2 full horn sections, 2-4 keyboardists, 2-4 lead singers, 4 drummers/percussion, 2 apex bassists and 2 lead guitarists. etc. Together foing the greatest hits of both bands. Look.. Them.. Up!!
That's such a fun performance. And it's always great to see you noticing the music and just the reality of it because of your former experience. #RIP TerryKath.
As a counterpoint to this song, Chicago's "Colour My World", though short, is a must hear. With an amazing flute intro and outro and heart felt vocal by Terry Kath, it is an under rated classic. It was also the theme song to my Jr Prom. Check it out! You won't be sorry!!
I grew up just around the corner from DePaul University school of music in the Lakeview district of Chicago. Which is where Chicago basically formed. There was a hot dog joint called Demon Dogs which was owned by one of the bands managers. The walls were full of Chicago memorabilia, gold records etc. The band would pop in there quite often in the 70's.
One of the greatest (and most prolific) bands to ever take the stage. Its amazing how many artists say that one of their big influences was Chicago. Not surprising though since you had a band full of true musicians and not a bunch of electronics
Make Me Smile. Yes That was an edit. They cut out about 9 minutes of the song. Chicago never recorded a song called "Make Me Smile" They recorded a song called ... Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon ...that is over 12 minutes long. Make me Smile is a 3 minute cutout by the record company that is the beginning with the end spliced on. They also cut out another 3 minute part called Colour My World. The best version is ..."Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon" live (Tanglewood 1970) just be sure it is 14 minutes to get the whole song. Terry was on FIRE in that concert. ua-cam.com/video/iFWdkBvxDoA/v-deo.html&pp=ygUsYmFsbGV0IGZvciBhIGdpcmwgaW4gYnVjaGFubm9uIGNoaWNhZ28gbGl2ZSA%3D
This is from the album Chicago II, IMHO their best album ever. It's a concept album which was a thing back then. It's meant to be listened to all at once. There are so many songs on this album that were hits on the radio. The album is also notable for the many different and unique endings to the songs. This was a 2 LP album and one whole side is a suite of songs called Ballet for a Girl in Buchannen that is just fantastic. Robert Lamm wrote most of the songs for this group.
I mentioned thus in a comment to your reaction to "25 or 6 to 4" that this was a song that was sung by the late great Terry Kath. His vocals are so soulful. This rendition seems shortened to me somehow. Next, try the song "Colour My World," also sung by Kath.
That 1970 concert at Tanglewood is "out of sight", like, really groovy! The era of "Chicago Transit Authority" which this concert represents was the best period for the band. They were definitely firing on all cylinders in those days, unlike in later years.
I know what it sounded like back when I listened to it on my stereo in the 70s. That feeling comes through in your video and I appreciate you reacting to this fun song. Another great band with an amazing horn section is Blood, Sweat, and Tears. They even use a Tuba for the bass part in a few songs. My suggestion would be “God Bless the Children.”
Again, by design, the brass had their own sections to this song. Unfortunately because of his untimely passing, Terry Kath, the guitar player and singer departed from the band too soon. He gave the group that edginess with his voice and guitar. I think this might be my favorite of theirs. Saw them a number of times in the late 60's ,early 70's.
That's Terry Kath in lead vocals and guitar, RIP. No he's not about to pass gas. What is actually doing was turning around to conduct the finale of the song. He is an underrated guitarist, but he was given one of the nicest compliments. In an interview with legendary Jimi Hendrix, Jimi is quoted as saying that he felt Terry Kath was the best guitarist in the world.
All of us young people had great hair in the 70s! Long and thick. I saw them in concert in the 70s. They sound great live. Check out "Colour my World" one of their most beautiful songs.
Chicago was simply fabulous. Terry Kath was top notch and left us way too soon. So many great songs from them. Another beautiful and very different song is Colour My World. So beautiful.
Live versions are always better after you hear the actual studio recording. Just a helpful hint... :-) T PS: Yes...edit as the actual song was broken up in two parts on the Chicago II album. Listen to side 2 in full and you'll be floored!
U reacted to 25or 6 to 4 first then the tanglewood july '71 live concert footage which maybe why sound is low.Chicago first 3 double albums which includes Terry Kath were the Best before the gun incident led to RIP.
I've played a lot of Chicago songs, 25 to 6 to 4, and make me smile. does any body know what time it is, beginnings, I play drums and this is fun music to play, This is the music i grew up on.
This is part of a seven-movement suite titled "Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon", written by trombone player James Pankow, appearing on Chicago's second album. James wrote it for a girl in West Virginia he was dating when he wrote the suite. The record label at the time of the release in 1970 joined together the opening and closing movements, "Make Me Smile" and "Now More Than Ever" (a reprise of "Make Me Smile") to release a single of "Make Me Smile" that sounded as a complete song. At 5:55 you noticed the video has an edit. Whoever made the concert video you watched did a similar edit to the show recorded at Tanglewood in 1970. You should listen to the entire suite, which also includes Terry Kath's lead vocal on "Colour My World": ua-cam.com/video/xgM4xSIShYw/v-deo.html/
If you want to know the song for a parent of a daughter, Little One & its prelude. The drummer & a guy from Rufus wrote it & it is the very last TerryKath song sung. And the Keifer Sutherland raised his daughter.
There is a Awesome documentary called THE TERRY KATH EXPERIENCE where the daughter tries to track down the guitar 🎸 on the video you watched. Great Band and Great Reaction!! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
I would love to see you react to studio versions more often, if that were something you would consider. It really gives you a better understanding of the song itself, then you get to enjoy the riffing and adjustments they make for live performances. That said I do enjoy your reactions, keep 'em coming!
hey baby girl react to more chicago with the other vocalist peter cetera the bass player has a high nice range you'll love his singing chicago had the luxury of having three lead vocalist on any given song !
Britt, Since you love brass, I suggest a group called Chase. They have a popular song called Get It On and an amazing instrumental in Open Up Wide. Please react soon
Too bad you didn't watch it from the beginning. The way they come into the song was spectacular. A look inside the early days of Chicago....when they were hungry!
That's only when they don't play the whole "Ballad for a Girl in Buchanan". I've seen in concert over 20 time from the early 70s until last year. Sometimes they play the whole Ballad. Other time they just play the 2 movements "Make Me Smile/ More Than Ever ". The AM single hit was even a more edited version of "Make Me Smile/ More Than Ever ", so it was short enough for AM radio play.
Fact is, this wasn't their best performance of the song at all. What is better live? The end of the song suite Color My World/Now More Than Ever. I think there's only one UA-cam with that title.
Chicago was an amazing live band. But when you have a bad recording, play the album version. The album cut of 25 or 6 to 4 and Make me Smile are awesome. However you did get the right live version of 25 or 6 to 4. Maybe it’s a copyright issue?
No, because the whole song that is on the album and they are recreating at this concert has several movements and is close to 20 minutes long and includes "Colour My World". Sometimes, in concert they play the whole Ballad. Other times, they play like this edited version shows.
Finally covering Terry Kath on lead vocals! The soul in his voice is mesmerizing.
He's emulating Ray Charles.
I think that Terry Kath was the heart and soul of Chicago. They never sounded the same after Terry passed away,
Terry Kath is one of the most underrated guitarists/artists ever. He was fenomilal! So sad he never really got the notoriety he deserved. It seems that only through YT that he's finally getting some exposure to more people, which is great.
I agree. It’s just a horrible tragic story.Kath lives 🙏🤘🏻🌹
Have you seen the documentary on his life?

Phenomenal
He gets his notoriety from me he was one of my inspirations to start playing the guitar in the 70s. Along with Robin trower. And acoustic genius of Leo kottke..
@@SIR-DanielHunter Those are some great artists that you have drawn inspiration from. I'm happy to hear that Terry Kath is one of them
The first lineup was formed at DePaul University when Terry Kath would hang in the music department and met several members of the future band, and Terry brought them all together. He was the only member that didn't have a formal music education.
When Terry Kath passed, the heart and soul of Chicago left the building.
The best version of the band Chicago imho. Terry's short life was just tragic. Gone too soon.
Chicago was a horn section accompanied by an amazing rock band. Check out the band Blood, Sweat and Tears

I think I was in grade school, and my aunt got my brother and I tickets to see Chicago. It was the first concert we had ever been to. Amazing !
Yep. We played this in marching band. Fun.
A lot of people in the industry consider Chicago to be the best group of musicians who ever got together, based on pure talent
Chicago is a big band - when I remember right, they moved from pure Jazz to their massive hit: If you leave me now (with a different formation - a kind of commercial 70's Doo-Wop).

“Color My World” a beauty from them, too.

Now do you see why Terry Kath was called the "White Ray Charles"
II’ve heard it as “sang like Ray Charles, played guitar like Jimi Hendrix,” though personally I’d say his style is quite different.
That's such a fun performance. And it's always great to see you noticing the music and just the reality of it because of your former experience. #RIP TerryKath.
The wonderful brass made Chicago sound shiny.
I remember back in the day when these great songs came on our one speaker portable radios at the park or beach. Great music lives forever.
I have seen them many times in concert. Excellent! One of my first was Chicago and the Beach Boys. They came together at the end and sang together.
My absolute favorite Chicago song period! That's saying alot because they have a bucket full of hits. The bucket is rather large as well...
As a counterpoint to this song, Chicago's "Colour My World", though short, is a must hear. With an amazing flute intro and outro and heart felt vocal by Terry Kath, it is an under rated classic. It was also the theme song to my Jr Prom. Check it out! You won't be sorry!!

Chicago was Rock & Roll's version of the Big Bands of the 40s. Amazing instrumentals.
Terry Kath was from another planet!
This is from the album Chicago II, IMHO their best album ever. It's a concept album which was a thing back then. It's meant to be listened to all at once. The late Terry Kath, was an incredible vocalist !
Chicago is just great musicians coming together.
Do yourself a solid and listen to the studio version, too. Thanks!
Get this ALBUM... Chicago Transit Authority, 1969.
Britt, youre hilarious! Terry often turned his back to the audience to finish off the song, not a "fart"!!! Lol😂😂❤
Yet another example of why you should listen to the studio versions. Music is about sound not seeing what someone looks like.
They still tour...go see them this summer with EW&F they put on a fantastic show!
Thanks for continuing with Chicago! Keep digging! 70's are the best!
You bet!
Terry KATH sings like RAY CHARLES ! Please do BEGGININGS by Chicago next !
That's Terry Kath in lead vocals and guitar, RIP. No he's not about to pass gas. What is actually doing was turning around to conduct the finale of the song. Chicago rocks!
All of us young people had great hair in the 70s! Long and thick. I saw them in concert in the 70s. They sound great live. Check out "Colour my World" one of their most beautiful songs.
Chicago and Toto were really cool in the 80's because they brought brass into everything
Go back and listen to full version. 😊
This song is just part of a series of songs on the album Chicago II. That's the edit you heard. Side 2 of Chicago II. Color My World is part of it.
Chicago was simply fabulous. Terry Kath was top notch and left us way too soon. So many great songs from them. Another beautiful and very different song is Colour My World. So beautiful.
Glad you enjoyed it
baby girl is because chicago songs are catchy and universal and also great musicians !
Live versions are always better after you hear the actual studio recording. Just a helpful hint... :-) T PS: Yes...edit as the actual song was broken up in two parts on the Chicago II album. Listen to side 2 in full and you'll be floored!
One of my all time favorite bands. Terry Kath was an awesome guitarist and vocalist. 😅
Couldn't agree more!
Brought a smile to my morning

Been watching you for a while now. You’re reaching your stride. The personality is coming through the screen. Keep it up, kid.
I appreciate that!

Sounds like an AM radio.Studio version way better
If you want to know the song for a parent of a daughter, Little One & its prelude. The drummer & a guy from Rufus wrote it & it is the very last TerryKath song sung. And the Keifer Sutherland raised his daughter.
Check out ‘I’m a Man” next. No horns but crazy percussion and a real banger.
There is a Awesome documentary called THE TERRY KATH EXPERIENCE where the daughter tries to track down the guitar 🎸 on the video you watched. Great Band and Great Reaction!! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
Terry kath guitarist did a song called tell me. Get the one that shows his face.
I would love to see you react to studio versions more often, if that were something you would consider. Of all the slang that came out of th'60s GROOVEY was the last one I expected to survive like it has. 😂
Greatest guitarist ever, Terry Kath.
Yeah!
❤️🔥 Terry RIP
I hadn't heard the live version but a minute was enough.
Kath was a frustrated lead guitarist. Wished they would rock out more!
When you’re done with 70’s Chicago check out some 80s stuff …you might like Hard to say I’m sorry, and Hard habit to break….power ballads
Love your aww ha at 1:43.
Terry Kath's vocals for me exceeded Peter Cetera. Yes, he was a fantastic guitarist but his vocals are just so soulful and amazing.
hey baby girl react to more chicago with the other vocalist peter cetera the bass player has a high nice range you'll love his singing chicago had the luxury of having three lead vocalist on any given song !
25 or 6 to 4 I believe is the previous Chicago song that you reacted to. Odd title little hard to remember.
The video sound is indeed low, yes, but please revisit this with the studio version. It'll be worth your while. Such a great recording!
Will do!
, Keep early Chicago coming...
Fantastic !
Thank you! Cheers!
Terry Kath was the White Ray Charles
At the six minute mark . . . . . NOT an edit. I have been to several Chicago concerts, this is exactly the way that they performed.
Chicago is good live, but you REALLY need to hear their musicianship on their studio recordings when properly mixed!
Terry Kath rock and roll God.
🙂↔️
brit--do the studio version...you'll get great audio!
❤️🔥staying❤️🔥
So sad that Terry Kath accidentally killed himself, this band sure went through some shit!!!!!!
🫤🫤🫤🫤
The audio is way better
Hello again if you like Chicago ? you need to listen to these Russian copy cats - Questions 67 & 68 - Chicago (Leonid & Friends cover)

Fact is, this wasn't their best performance of the song at all. What is better live? The end of the song suite Color My World/Now More Than Ever. I think there's only one UA-cam with that title.
Is he gonna fart? LOL
No Sade?
Terry Kath was Hendrix’s favorite guitarist and said Terry was better than him.
