When I was a teenager (I was born in DC in 71 & grew up on Route 1 right outside of the city) Chicago was 1 of those bands you didn’t dare admit to liking….well a lot of time has passed & this song & “Feeling Stronger Everyday” are both just reeeaaally good songs 🤷🏼‍♂️🖤I mean good is good ya know?

The group, Chicago started in the late 60s - and had quite a combination of
instruments blending together. Of the original 7 members: 1) Peter Cetera
    - was lead singer in many of their songs. He wrote some of the music, and he
also played bass guitar. 2) Terry Kath - played lead guitar, and actually was
lead singer in a few of their songs. His guitar-playing was noticed by Jimi
Hendrix who spoke very highly of him. Terry Kath's voice was quite unique
also - he was a fan of Ray Charles, and when he sings you might notice that it
sounds kind of like Charles. 3) Robert Lamm - played keyboard, and was the
lead singer on many of their songs. Lamm wrote many of their songs and was
gifted in songwriting. 4) Danny Seraphine - drummer. He definitely could play
the drums! 5) Walter Parazaider played the saxophone. 6) Lee Loughnane -
trumpet player. 7) James Pankow - trombone player who also wrote some of
their songs as well. Each musician wasn't limited to the instruments that I had
just stated, but those instruments were the ones they played the most. The band
has had many changes over the years and decades, and exist until now: 11/12/23.
They have had 37 albums from late 60s until this date of 11/12/2023. There is a
current Russian group that plays many Chicago songs, and they play them very
well. That group is called 'Leonid and Friends'. Leonid and Friends also play
a few 'Earth, Wind, and Fire' songs - and they do it very well! Enough said.

I want to start off by saying that Terry was a great guitar player. But the rest of the band where also very talented. I know that the band thought about quitting after Terry died. But when you experience a tragic and unexpected death people have what can be seen as strange reactions. It should be obvious that Chicago still had a heart and soul or it would not still be functioning. Chicago is a band and their sound comes from the interaction of the many different instruments and voices in the band. Their latest CD , Born for This, is great. The last Chicago concert that I saw was in 2021. It was fantastic and I noticed many "younger' people in the crowd. Yes I do remember Chicago when it first started. I was 16 when Chicago was formed. Chicago great then great today!

Julio, don’t feel bad for not having heard of Chicago before this. I’m 60 years old, and I’m always “discovering” bands that I wish I’d discovered years earlier. There’s only so much time in the day, and music is infinite.
The fact that you have the desire and musical sensibilities to explore the infinite landscape of music is a blessing which will serve you well during your hopefully long and happy life.
Btw, I’ve been an AC/DC fan since High Voltage.
    Rock on, brother! 🤙

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!! Not the cut out Make me smile. It is just the first and last part of "Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon" . They also cut another song from the middle of it called Colour My World ."Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon" studio version is 13 minutes but I recommend the live tanglewood version which you have to check to see that it is 14 Minutes. There are cut up versions of it also.

Blood Sweat and Tears started a genre of horn bands in the late sixties. After Chicago's success, the funk movement arrived with the Brecker Brothers and others. Chicago's arrangements, guided by Terry Kath's voice and guitar, were extraordinary. Peter Cetera on bass and vocals was great, too. Their whole vibe changed when Davis Foster entered the picture and put Cetera singing power ballads above the horns. This album was their best.

Well Brecker Brothers is a name not many people bring up. Kinda sad when that's who us musicians in that time period were listening to and learning from. Still listen to the "Heavy Metal Be-Bop" album today.

I'm 45 years old. They were one of my favorite bands in '86. Karate Kid II. Peter Cetera was the sole lead singer then. Chicago 17. But anyway, after Terry Kath died in 1978, the band went more pop. I love early Chicago, with Terry Kath. Solid rock with a horn section. BRILLIANT!🤗🤙🤘🙌👏👏👏👏

Chicago was an amazing band. Terry Kath sang lead on this one, and was the guitar player for Chicago. Sadly he died in 1978. If you like rockers, listen to pre 1975 Chicago. Later Chicago was good, but mostly sang ballads. I prefer the early Chicago. More rockers than ballads, but their early ballads were quite beautiful. Everyone's favorite being "Color My World, also sung by terry Kath. Rockers...Free, Question 67 or 68, Lowdown (not the Boz Scaggs song), Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is, and you have to listen to Beginnings, a masterpiece. Can't go wrong with early Chicago.

This is actually the single version of the song. The album version is a 7 song suite known as "Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon". The single version takes the opening song "Make Me Smile" and adds the song "Now More Than Ever" to the end. "Now More Than Ever" is a sort of reprise of "Make Me Smile". Personally, I prefer the "Ballet". If you want some incredible guitar work, watch the Tanglewood concert version of it.

Terry Kath was their fantastic guitar player & singer on this song. Sadly Terry died in 70s from a gun accident. When They lost Terry they lost the soul of their band. Chicago songs to check out from their FIRST album when they were still called "Chicago Transit Authority" Track 1 on that album is called "Introduction" That song will take you thru the whole genre of just who Chicago is in one great song. Another song on that same album is their cover of "I'm A Man" !! After that album they shortened their name to just "Chicago" & dropped fantastic songs on the music scene like "25 or 6 to 4" & "I Just Want To Be Free" Try those to start.

Oh, my Dude! Thank You for reacting to this... Actually, the guitar solo is longer on the original LP. I have been a drummer since 1974 (12 years old) and I had the Original 'Chicago Transit Authority'' album that came out in 1969... Terry Kath is lead vocal and guitar on this song. He died from a gun cleaning accident back in 1977, I think? RIP ~ After he died the band became less Jazz/Rock and became more known for their love song ballads in the '80s... lol Thanks for taking the time to do this, great honest reaction, highly entertaining! 😃😃😃

Hey Raymond. I'm Steve, Class of 1970, St Catherine of Genoa grade school, Chicago. Someone brought a radio on the last day of school; sitting on the front steps, we heard Make Me Smile for the first time. (WLS, or WCFL!!) Awesome tune!
Drummer Danny Seraphine challenged my nascent playing like no one else I had heard up to that point. (Of course, I later heard Tower of Power, EWF, etc.) Took me awhile to figure out the MMSmile solo! Mike Madden, Peter Kennedy, Phil Pajak, Jack Butler, Chris Pajak and I got to jamming on Chicago tunes after that!
The original line-up is top shelf. God bless!

Terry Kath, on vocals and guitar, was irreplaceable. His tragic, accidental, death rocked Chicago. The group continues playing to this day. I have seen them four or five times. Just not quite the same. He was the soul of the group.

They play Chicago better than Chicago ever played as a tribute to their love and admiration for the music. I have to listen every day for the high they breathe into the music.
