Though Colour My World was released in three early 70s, it got a a resurgence of airtime in 1978 after guitarist Terry Kath accidentally killed himself. This was one of the songs that featured Terry Kath on lead vocals. Note, I don't know why they always used the British spelling of "colour" since Chicago was an American band, but they did.
You hit the nail on the head when you said this is the difference with professionals/veterans/serious artists. The thing that carried Chicago for decades thru many different sounds and styles were their arrangements. In this song, tbh no one part (melody, horns, rhythm) is stand-alone awesome, but the sum of the parts is just, well yeah yummy. 😂 Chicago overall has fantastic arrangements, which have fueled their success thru the decades.
One of the most prolific bands in history. Something like 19 original albums plus various "greatest hits". Want to talk about a very deep rabbit hole? You found it. The level of talent on the stage is truly amazing. Their later work started gravitating toward bubblegum and pop, but anything prior to 1977 is great. They had MULTIPLE albums where every song is a banger whereas most groups are happy if they even put together ONE. Saturday In The Park, Does Anyone Know What Time It Is and 25 Or 6 to 4 will get you on your way
Being a Trumpet player at 17, Chicago was the go to band we all loved BECAUSE of the horns. All the marching bands in the 1970's, high school and college, were playing Chicago tunes at halftime and in basketball band. At Michigan State University, we did an entire Chicago halftime show, and formed the big Chicago script trademark on the field. I was right in front at the bottom of the "A." I got on national TV for a few seconds. My dad had seen me on TV that way, and he told me later...that was a magic moment when dad got excited his son was on national TV.😂 We had played the same show at the University of Illinois, in the rain mind you, and the one of the Chicago Newspapers had put our band on the front page Sunday paper forming the Chicago Script. Boy was the Illinois Band pissed off hahahhaha
Love this, Chicago, Moody Blues and Blood, Sweat, and Tears, got me with High School, especially Music Appreciation, shocked the teacher and earned me top grades.
The brass instrument is a flugelhorn, basically a cross between a trumpet and a French horn. It has a mellower sound than a regular trumpet. For more great flugelhorn music check out Chuck Mangione. He has a number of great tunes such as Feels So Good, Hill Where the Lord Hides, Land of Make Believe, and Bellavia.
Love how into Chicago you are. We had an embarrassment if riches in the 70's with innovative music and Chicago was a pioneer in their musical diversity. Nice to watch younger reactors appreciating baby boomer music. !!! Thanks for the memories! 😊❤
My favorite Chicago is… Saturday in the Park. Typical Saturday in Central Park, NYC. I’ve seen them live so many times. So talented. And they’ve been together for 50+ years. ❤
You should check out what many consider their magnum opus, "Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon," a medley featuring the hits "Make Me Smile" and "Colour My World."
From my town Chicago. Love these guys . Following them for awhile . A little before my time. So many great tunes . Color My World, Just You And Me, Beginnings, Saturday In The Park , If You Leave Me Now and so many others. Ill be typing for hours. Peter Cetera, Terry Kath and Robert Lamm were all greart singers.
Love Color My World, but everything by them. I was at UConn in 1970, and they gave a free concert on campus when they were still called Chicago Transit Authority.
Possibly an Emin trumpet rather than c. Its a half note down from the F horn better known as French horn. I played the e min for marching as opposed to the cumbersome French when marching as a French player
Chicago's legendary years are while their founding guitarist Terry Kath was alive. Chicago Transit Authority through Chicago XI is the rabbit hole you wanna live through. Start off with the first album (a monster double LP), first disc, first side, first track and let Terry blow you away on "Introduction" appropriately named for the band introducing their new sound to the world! Follow that up on the same album with "Poem 58" and get down with nine minutes of PURE FUNK!
Went to see Chicago live at Soldier Field in 1970. Was going to hospital corps school at Great Lakes Naval Training Center. Good memories, thanks. Darn, that was 54 years ago, gettin’ old.
This is from a TV special Chicago at Caribou Ranch in the Colorado Rockies. I remember watching it when I was in HS, Here is another song from that same special - Al Green backed by Chicago singing "Tired of Being Alone". You can see how much they are enjoying playing and seem blown away by the Rev.'s singing and it is fire ua-cam.com/video/i-F4janxKEw/v-deo.htmlsi=KXY4EU3WEkKEbTo6
That is a Hincke-horn. There's also a Jing-Tingler and a Floo-Floober. The keyboardist is playing an Electro Who-Cardio Floox. Pretty advanced for their time. Hope this helps explain.
I know you like uplifting fun music. Here's one you'll adore. It's Cinderella Shelter Me. The official music video has cameos of Lil Richard. Its gor the great gospel feel. Thank you. You're precious.
TV special at a ranch in Colorado. Recording their 6th album, which had a different, for them, laid back western sound. All Green joined them for the special.
Britt, been watching ur stuff Fer awhile. Hay dude, love you Bro. Your man is fortunate as well you. I'm white as hell, no prejudice here!! You're proof that we all can get along and "every" color has SO much in common! Love all you guys!!❤😂😊
The flugelhorn (/ˈfluːɡəlhɔːrn/), also spelled fluegelhorn, flugel horn, or flügelhorn, is a brass instrument that resembles the trumpet and cornet but has a wider, more conical bore. Like trumpets and cornets, most flugelhorns are pitched in B♭, though some are in C. It is a type of valved bugle, developed in Germany in the early 19th century from a traditional English valveless bugle. The first version of a valved bugle was sold by Heinrich Stölzel in Berlin in 1828. syrating in the 1960's or so, it became used as a jazz instrument for a sweeter sound...the trumpet is more brash or bright sounding, , the cornet, played exactly the same as a trumpet, is shorter length wise, and has a darker tone, and the Flugel Horn has even a more sweeter darker tone.
I love early Chicago best. But this is my favorite Chicago song. One huge difference on the official studio recording is the drum part at the end of this one. You get a little of it here live. Not the same. However this live version is still awesome. ❤
You should check out Leonid and Friends, the biggest Chicago fans, which is a Russian cover band. Check them out, this is a good one --- Aint Nobody Leonid Friends Chaka Khan and Rufus
There's a band called Leonid and Friends that specializes in covering Chicago, among other groups. They literally blew my mind on how dead on they sound like Chicago. Check em out.
As Chicago moved more towards ballads and away from their strengths, I thought that they'd keep their core music alive. This was early in their transition and I still liked their music
As a Chicago fan since the early 70s (I was 9 when my cousin got me into them). There are basically 3 eras of Chicago... The original Chicago(with the late Terry Kath), the pop Chicago(featuring Peter Cetera), and the new Chicago(after Peter left). I love all three versions though the pop early 80s was my least favorite as they used the horns at a minimum... Thank beautiful ❤
This is one of my favorite break-up songs because it's so positive. She's gone by hall and oates, the utter devestation of love. Sail on the commodores, heartbroken but philosophical leading to a sense of freedom. I will survive Gloria gaynor, she finds her inner strength. Second hand news by fleetwood mac, I know it's over but hey if your ever feeling horny I'm your boy...ballseyest ever.
BEHIND THE SCENES......Imagine (given the size and complexity of this band) trying to coordinate paractices, tour dates, wives, kids, life ALL WITHOUT INTERNET.
They are so good. This is great take to watch and it is not even the one that wound up on the studio track. Very similar to the finished product though.
This is 1 deep rabbit hole youve dropped into Chicago has 26 studio and 7 live albums and is still touring and releasing songs. So far youve only done early Chicago with Terry kath . After he passed from an accidental gun shot they got a bit softer and have some of the most romantic songs you will ever hear. Im sure peter Cetera the bass player will have you inducting them into the PDC once you hear songs like Your a hard Habit to Break,Your the Inspiration or Its Hard for me to say Im sorry Bye the way they just recently did a special on PBS this year live and it was fantastic
Danny Seraphine became a good friend of Igor Javad-Zade, the drummer for Leonid & Friends who have done a number of great covers of Chicago songs (including FSED: see ua-cam.com/video/xwYV4H9rU6o/v-deo.html ).
What a phenomenal recording session. Note all played together with real instruments. No digital, sampling, etc., etc., etc.
The instrument is the Fluglehorn. The best known Fluglehorn song of all time is "Feel so Good" by Chuck Mangione.
Chuck is one of my all time favorites! Brings back good memories
Saw Mangione in Amarillo Civic Center back in the late 70s. Great show.
The wider bore of the Flugelhorn gives it a darker and more mellow tone over the Trumpet’s more brassy sound.
@bobsylvester88 it's also more difficult to keep it intonation, so it takes a better lip to play it than a Trumpet. Not French Horn difficult, though.
@@farfromperfek interesting!
If you haven't heard " Colour My World " that's mandatory. That song must have been played 50% of all the Wedding's back in the 70's.
My wedding song in 1974.

I’ve seen them 3x in concert. Always amazing!
One of Chicago's best... you should check out the song "Make me Smile"... Terry Kath on vocals.
The album version. The vocals are legendary.
My fave
Chicago! One of my all-time favs. Thanks for sharing, Britt. I hope you have a great week.
IMHO this is best break-up song I've ever heard. He's feeling stronger everyday after their break-up. Chicago is rabbit hole with a deep bottom. 😁
Chicago always seems to give the listener this wall of sound which is great all the different sections marry so well together

It's great to see them play this live in studio (with Dolly in the rain), but the final studio version is even better.
Love this, Chicago, Moody Blues and Blood, Sweat, and Tears, got me with High School, especially Music Appreciation, shocked the teacher and earned me top grades.
Before the unfortunate death of guitarist, Terry Kath.....Chicago was a force. Their 70s work is phenomenal.
Too soft for me
Great reaction! Chicago's horns are legend.
Yes they are!

The great Peter Cetera singing lead vocals. Not too many bands with this much musical versatility.

Epic group! Love this song. Give a listen to Saturday in the Park and Only the Beginning.
I haven't heard this in so very long! 1973... I was 12. Oh man, now I need to go dig into my Chicago catalog...
Flugal horn, body of a trumpet, bell of a french horn
Love Color My World, but everything by them. I was at UConn in 1970, and they gave a free concert on campus when they were still called Chicago Transit Authority.
Horns are part of the "Chicago Sound"-Chicago, Earth, Wind, and Fire, The Buckinghams, The Ides of March, to name a few.
Yes, you should have heard them live, wow!
Britt first time seeing you. Lovely voice! This is one of those feel good songs when you need a lift!
great song, great choice, great band !
Possibly an Emin trumpet rather than c. Its a half note down from the F horn better known as French horn. I played the e min for marching as opposed to the cumbersome French when marching as a French player

Fantastic song from my youth. 👍

One of the best bands ever! I remember growing up on Chicago. It was dad when Terry Cath passed away.
Never heard this track live, only studio. And I’ve been a lifelong Chicago fan!
Thanks Britt, love listening to your reactions
If possible, you might want to give "Color My World" a listen. You'll hear a different side to Chicago.
That whole album is classic !!!!!
I’ll check it out!
My absolute favorite out of so many really good tracks from Chicago
Rev. Jim Ignatowski?
I like how this song builds.
I am pretty certain this is my favorite Chicago song. So hard to choose!
I just LOVE your hairstyle. It sings ‘JOY’ to me. I know it sounds odd, but that’s what I feel when I see you with it. ❤

Great band Brit ,More than a feeling ,Amanda also super songs
It’s hard to beat 70’s Chicago.
Yummy?! 😂😂❤ You are too wonderful, Britt!
Friends running track in college warmed up to this song
This is why it's so important every school has music classes.
I feel like Journey used this song for the basis of "feelin that way"
Anyone else hear how similar they are at the end?
Its always fun to see video of Terry Kath
Glad you enjoyed it
