One day I received a particularly disturbing phone call from my boss while I was at home. I played my yoga video and did the full hour and a half. Upon finishing I felt I could cope with anything coming my way. The sense of wellness, harmony and happiness was so overwhelming that to this day, I remember it as one of the best of my life.
This practice is my morning ritual. I feel so alive afterwards. The moving meditative journey is hypnotic and a mental clarity. It’s an absolute full-body/mind high. Exhilarating. It has saved my body, mind, soul from the inner turmoil I’ve experienced the majority of my life. I am 32, and almost a year of consistent practice has completely transformed me. I hope to study in Mysore one day with R. Sharath Jois. “The teacher will appear when the student is ready.” I practice and pray every day that that day will come soon 🙏🏼 😊 Happy practicing, my fellow yogis!
I had really bad back pain started slowly( I was 33 y o) then with time gotten worse by the time I was 37 y o couldn’t sleep at night and I am not an idiot to go to hospital so I started ashtanga yoga at home using my iPad didn’t go to any classes. Well after my back pain went away forever with my flue and other things that used to bother me now even my flues lasts only couple of days ☺️ I’m 47 now still doing yoga and I love it ❤

When Maty and Chuck opened Yogaworks on Montana, I began my morning in Chuck's class, primary series. Hard to believe I actually do all those poses. Was fortunate to do my teacher training with Maty and Lisa Walford. I am celebrating 40 years of teaching yoga this year thanks to the many fantastic teachers I was able to study with. Maty 's aura was so bright that she graduated life early from this incarnation. I am forever grateful to have been one of their 1st generation of students. Nothing nowadays can come close to that level of authenticity. Thank you .
Such a gift to find this vintage primary series video with early influencers. I came to yoga in 1998, discovered Ashtanga in 2001 and became a teacher in 2003. I had the good fortune to take several workshops with Jois in the early 00’s. So much has changed since this was shot with the popularity and glamorizing of this ancient practice. Coming across and experiencing this in all simplicity brought the light back with roots.
after practicing for many years.....this reinforces why i do yoga....you can't thing of anything other than breathing if you focus properly....therefore stress is busted for sure.....mind is clear and present....amazing yoga!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yoga is the practice of connecting the body with the mind to achieve being in the present with concentration and focus for inner balance of the five primary elements and the balancing of yin and yang or Shiva shakti. It's a conversation with God.
AMAZING ! IF one does this sequence every day - for sure that person will be like A Terminator.. Unbreakable !... just watching this gives me goose bumps !
Honesty is very important. Having said that there are many yoga styles that say nothing of the sort. I had a stroke in a Hot Yoga Class. You be the judge :)
Ashtanga is at the root of original yoga pracitice and a very disciplined routine. For most, the primary series will suffice for the rest if their lives, and that is wonderful. Part of our practice is letting go of comparison and developing your practice for yourself and improve for yourself. Pattabhi Jois and many of his compatriots in India will not allow you to continue beyond Surya Namaskar it your form and breath is without mastery. The Astanga series, in its disciplined and most pure form, is very demanding, esp as performed here with demonstration of palms together and high dristi.
Wow, this brings back so many memories. In the 00s, after the birth of my second child, I started practicing Bikram yoga. I was naturally flexible so I progressed very quickly and soon grew bored of the same 26 poses. Yoga blogs introduced me to Ashtanga. At the time there was only one Ashtanga teacher in Atlanta, John Meredith, so I began practicing with him. I still remember the very first class i took 'Intro to Primary'. My arms have never been so tired and sore. But I was hooked. I practiced reguarly with him for about a year and a half. The binds and bends came easily to me, but strength was always a struggle (as were mula bandha and uddiyada bandha!). I was able to jump in and out of poses, but never did I ever land as lightly and with such control as these yogis. I was just trying out second series when circumstances dictated that i had to return to full-time work. The studio was about thirty minutes away from my house, and full Primary takes about an hour and a half, so practicing with John was pretty much a half-day commitment which I was unable to sustain. I switched to distance running with yoga at home as a supplement to my running. I tried to keep up Primary at home, but with two young kids and without the yoga community, I just couldn't. Fifteen years later and I have lost much of my flexibility due to running injuries and frozen shoulder after an injury at the gym. But watching this lovely practice brings back all the good memories of that time in my life.
The Bikram 26 pose class is the beginner's class. He learned from Ghosh, and Ghosh also had an intermediate and advanced level series. Tony Sanchez has resources to teach them all. But to say the 26 pose class was boring so you had to change to another school is odd. It's the same as Ashtanga yoga primary series in that it's where one starts, but more levels do follow that.
I know your comment is old, but having dealt with frozen shoulder I know how painful and frustrating that is. For me, what worked was getting back to Ashtanga, because the sun salutes opened up the chest and shoulders. My frozen shoulder was a result of collapsing into my chest when I slept on my side. The muscles had shortened. By stretching the chest, the problem disappeared. I hope this helps someone.
I swear i dont feel this way with any other kind of yoga. I LOVE Pattabhi Jois's style so much. Its not just about how exhausted light and great my body feels, but its the mental training that makes me feel confident and stronger after im done. Thank you very very much for uploading and sharing this video ♥ Namaste
Yoga is a gift from God to mankind. Through Yoga practise, anyone can work towards physical, mental, moral and spiritual perfection. This video demonstrates a form of Hatha Yoga, which is a physical form of Yoga involving stretches, balances, and other physical challenges. This type of Yoga is probably the most familiar to the general public, although there are many other types of Yoga, such as meditation, Pranayama (control of breathing), and chanting. In fact, anything can be Yoga, if it is done yogically, that is with full concentration on the present moment and action, full devotion and humility, and no thought for the future results. Yoga as such is the true religion, and all religious practises have aspects of Yoga integrated within them. A particular method of Hatha Yoga is shown here, call Ashtanga Yoga. This is perhaps the most vigorous and arduous of Hatha practises. It aims to stretch and flex all parts of the body in all directions. As practitioners advance, it introduces difficult internal muscle controls, breathe controls, a reining in and control of the senses, until the whole being is poised and controlled, including the mind, which is stilled and one pointed. Dedicated and determined practise of this Yoga give a strong lithe youthful body which is never over muscular or disproportionally developed. The lungs breathe deep and strong. The cardiovascular system is smooth and steady. Digestion and elimination is rendered quick and complete. The senses become acute. The mind becomes sharp and concentrated, and memory is steadily improved. The practitioner gradually realises his or her fullest potential. I send my love and respect to the late great guru featured in this film, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, and to his guru Sri Krishnamacharya, who both together created this ingenious system. Let us practise fully and daily and all is coming.
Guruji's voice is a lovely guide in these dark, lonely days. I don't care if I never get out of first series, this is a beautiful, challenging place to be. No need to compare! These are all highly advanced students/teachers and your practice is all yours.
If all this looks unbelievably advanced and something you could never do, take heart. I started out not being able to do much of anything, but after years of astanga I could do 98% of what you see here as well as these guys do it. The key is practice 6 days a week, eat very little, and cut out running and other activities that tighten muscles. No form of yoga will make you flexible and strong faster than astanga. On the other hand, you must know how to practice to avoid hurting yourself, which is a real possibility with this yoga.
Searencia Its process eat less. If you start ashtanga 6 days a week your body change every day , month and you dont need a lot food. But its automaticaly process if you keep practice :-) Good luck
Max Czenszak i just wonder if one has a twisted spine (born to be) or a spine that is not straight as normal (after recover from accident), can they start practiicing from the very basis and gradually up to this level?
宗思 sik Yes, slowly slowly you can start practice. Dont think to much about levels of yoga. Every one have own level. Yoga is not only asana its inner practice of spiritual life. Keep practice and be happy with love.
Vande Gurunam Charanaravinde Sandarashita swatma sukhava bhode Nishreyase Jangalakaya Mane Samsara halahala mohashantiye Abahu Purushakaram Shankachakra Asi Dharinam Sahasra Shirasam Swetam Pranamami Patanjalim Om I respectfully bow to the lotus feet of my teacher, who teaches the knowledge of the Self that awakens us to great happiness, who is the Jungle Physician and dispeller of the poison of conditioned existence. Taking the form of a man up to the hands, holding a conch, a discus, and a sword and having a thousand heads of white light, Patanjali, I bow to you.
As an Indian living in America, I have always been offended by the way yoga is practiced all around. The most "liberal" of people do things like dog yoga and goat yoga ... if that's not a racist joke, I don't know what is. This video changed my mind about yoga in America. After so many years, this video made me realize that there are good and serious people everywhere. I wish videos like this were more widely known. Thank you for uploading this.
@Reid Pierce for me for sure, I did some kind yoga and it is the best that I found. Because has some kind os degrees. I think this kink of methodology can help us to get better without teacher. Because is always the same exercises. But one day I will looking for one teacher for maybe adjust some mistakes.
Check out Bryan Kest. He trained under Pattabhi Jois and does Ashtanga based sequences with longer holds to build strength, and classes of various lengths. He's an amazing teacher and it helps to support your Mysore style practice.
GRACIAS-GRACIAS. Felicitaciones.
Well, despite the disclaimer/warning, I'm still going to use this at home. I'm moving to a part of the country where the closest yoga studio is an hour away, and there's one girl locally who does classes at the Y, but I'm kind of a snob about my practice. There's no guarantee she practices this kind of yoga. I've been to classes that leave me unfulfilled in terms of relaxation and physical demand. I'm glad this is up. It will help my home practice.
No words for this. This was the first time I did this practice in my life. I am completely new to yoga, I have been practicing only since last december, nothing before. This class was amazing. Of course, I was not able to do all the poses, and I cannot do the fancy, strong transitions. But, best 80 minutes for a long time!
Zsuzsanna Benkó did you manage the jumps? im new as well and wonder how long it takes till jumping through.

haha, naah, I did not, also, I am not sure I will ever be able to... I have a very bad left ankle, which prevents me from jumps. So I step back and step up! :)
Én is ezzel a videóval kezdtem, aztán találtam egy termet, ahol hagyományos módon oktatnak budapesten heti 6szor minden reggel mindenki a saját ütemében csinálja a sorozatot, ameddig megy neki addig az ászanáig gyakorol. Nekem sokat segített a közös mégis egyéni gyakorlás
I am suffering from hair fall but I have always noticed if I practice yoga n pranayama the hair fall has been reduced to almost nil..truly yoga connects you with your inner soul n gives you peace.. mostly Shirshasana has been very helpful controlling hair fall
I am in love with❤️Ashtanga, although every day I feel it’s new. Perhaps this is more of a daily practice of internal (ethereal) flossing, releasing/cleaning out the hidden tarter of conditioned programming/downloads of the emotional & mental reactions to life, that have built up over the years, keeping ourselves stuck in old patterns. All I know, from my experience, is...this yoga practice has perfect Healing benefits, in divine time. Trust the process😍
watching this video I have learned more than I have in my Moksha yoga class. Moksha yoga, Canada has got it all wrong. Now I know what commercialization of yoga means.
I know of other places that have it all wrong too. I had to walk of a class when we were instructed to do jumping Jack's with rubber bands around our ankles... the "teachers" making it up as they go along. Needless to say... but I'm saying it... I was asked to not come back.
Watching Sri K. Pattabhi Jois guide us through the Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga is truly awe-inspiring! His dedication, wisdom, and passion for yoga are a shining example for all of us on our journey. Let's remember that progress is a process, and each step on our mat is a step towards growth and self-discovery. Keep breathing, keep flowing, and keep believing in yourself.

We are Indian should feel proud the yoga which is invented in INDIA. Great thing is that whole world accepted that yoga is only one to connect our body and mind together to feel and to be happy and also live longer happily. And I request every single Indian who lives not only in India but also all over the world follow yoga every single day or at least 5 days in a week. Promote yoga 🙏🙏👏👏
@@yogaveera the video was released in 1993 and has been uploaded to various channels over the years. I even have the dvd of this and secondary series from the 1993 taping.

What a blessing to have this video and doing practice just hearing his voice ❤ Thank you for the people who recorded and it’s helping millions of people😊 I’m grateful!
Im back to watch again because today is my practical teaching exam. The long wait to become a Yog- teacher is so soon this video is my deepest motivation right. now I'm in Rishikesh Tapovan❤❤
Kelly Watts for us it's free from since time immemorial , passed on from one sage to another and to masses. At 4 i joined group of kids who were trained by our guru for free for few years. The first gift i received from my dad was a book on yoga at 8. For me it's look so odd to see how it's been commercialized. 40 EUR / hour !!?! For one session... that too by those who just treat it like a gymnastics.
ASMRyouVEGANyet? No its not racist. It's an observation and an accurate one. That is a sad trait of much of white culture. (Btw I am of pure Aryan features, and pure Aryan ethnicity except for part Cherokee. I have observed thus trait of my ethnicity since early childhood sadly.)
sriram seshadri I believe this to be a trait from the fallen angels envy esp wound up in white groups more than others? Read the Book Of Enoch? Peace and wholeness to you.
I don’t find this video very instructional. Yes, I see them doing the poses but there’s a lot to be broken down about each pose and there’s no explanation about the correct form
I’m new to Ashtanga and I just began a Mysore class a few weeks ago. This video has been a tremendous resource and source of inspiration. His counts are slower so I have to hold the poses longer than I would with my own breath but its the best challenge to follow this, keeps me from getting lazy with my at home practice.
Best yoga video I have ever seen. I am completely fascinated and intrigued. Lucky are those who got to learn from this man. Wish I knew of a teacher like this in modern day LA.
Go to an ashtanga yola shala, or look up Manju Jois. He is his son and brought ashtanga to the US first. He travels the world teaching and he's wonderful.
I tried this everyday on my 3rd week now after one and half year of practice the Video of Praniti almost similar to this video and I manage to do half 🤣😂🤣🤸🏻♂️of the whole session
Thank you for this video posting. Its good to see Americas best Ashtanga Yoga teachers as then were then and now. Sri Jois was a master guru of guru's.
I think humanity is very lucky that teachers like him has been incarnated here to share this beautiful practice and information about body, soul and mind. In this universe i hope i am lucky enough to learn also valuable information near along great teachers and share them to everyone ❤
GUYS and girls remember it is very important to follow proper technique and breathing procedure. Knowledge of right postures and inhaling and exhaling is extremely critical and important or you can damage your body. Kindly pay attention to moves and teacher's instructions . infact I suggest if you are new to this first just watch it a few times and carefully listen to instructions and rhythm of movements and breathing pattern and understand. Then only physically practice.
This is a great video to show you perfect form. I think my next practice will be much much better after having seen this. I don't think I'll get to their smoothness but my attention will be in the right places
Tnx a lot for this video! It's really helpful for beginner primary level practitioners, such as myself, to see exactly how fluid changes in postures are and how they are done more easily.
Natalie, this practice happens over time. So, if you start slowly with modified positions and transitions it's VERY pleasant and relaxing. Joyful even. In my opinion, if you aren't smiling you aren't doing it right.
Wow, what discipline these practioners have. I have attempted this practice many times and each time is different. Today a feeling of frustration over came me as I was not as strong as other times but with persistence and dedication all is possible! I will aim at making this a consistent, if not daily practice! Thank you for the upload, metta and namaste 🌹
I tried this a week ago and only made it through 40 mins. Tried again today and finished it. It was super challenging and i loved it! I have a lot of room for growth 😁
This is not meant as a class to begin with. This is solely for demonstration. But if you finished, you must be practicing already? This is a very advanced practice. The students here spent years getting to this level. Be careful.
Thank you very much for sharing this… I am a beginner and am making progress, but seeing ideal form is very helpful; on video, I can really look without staring at classmates...
Thank you for sharing! It is so great to hear Guruji's voice again. I was blessed to have studied with him shortly before he passed away. This video has inspired me to get back into a regular Full Primary Series practice. Much gratitude!
I am currently taking a Yoga elective at my college. Now that I see where the instructor has us headed I realize the mistake I've made. Just joking. This is great motivation and gives you a reason to stick to it even when you don't feel like it.
Love love love this! Thanks for uploading. I really feel the difference right after doing it. I love yoga especially when the master himself is teaching!
Today I practiced till 42 after that i feel like better to do it tomorrow as most of the twists will come after immense practice... But I'm happy that i can do till 40 and this is my second time practice with this video... 1 and a half year back I was not able to do 15 mins practice with this😇
Exactly the same point for me too so I just watched the rest! So inspired to study their transitions and breathing but my body needs to learn to cooperate more.
The practice is mostly being narrated in English by the guru, with his very distinctive accent. The influence of Sanskrit is basically only on loan words, such as maharajah.

Guruji's voice is a lovely guide in these dark, lonely days. I don't care if I never get out of first series, this is a beautiful, challenging place to be. No need to compare! These are all highly advanced students/teachers and your practice is all yours.
ASTANGGA THE BEST ❤
If all this looks unbelievably advanced and something you could never do, take heart. I started out not being able to do much of anything, but after years of astanga I could do 98% of what you see here as well as these guys do it. The key is practice 6 days a week, eat very little, and cut out running and other activities that tighten muscles. No form of yoga will make you flexible and strong faster than astanga. On the other hand, you must know how to practice to avoid hurting yourself, which is a real possibility with this yoga.
Why eat very little?
Max Czenszak thanks for your reply. then I dont worry too much, thank you!
Wow this is crazy! The transitions are so smooth from one position to the next. Its great to see what is possible, very inspiring.
Agreed.. they are not jumping as crazy.. a lot of awareness and many hours of practice there.
@@VanezzaRoca many years of daily practice there
A rare moment in time. A master level teacher, and what is now modern day masters in training. Love the training

He was ~78 years old when this was shot
This is what makes UA-cam great! Thanks so much for posting and keeping it here, Adam. ❤

This is how Yoga needs to be practiced,it's a sadhana
Jois didn't believe that yoga had to be a certain traditional way. That's why he created Ashtanga and brought it to the world.
Those people aren't liberal. They're just masochistic nationalists.
I v been doing this every day. I usually stop at 48 minutes, getting better every day wishing to get the end some day.
@Reid Pierce I v been trying, and I will keep doing until do that. I will get it.😄😄
@Reid Pierce for me for sure, I did some kind yoga and it is the best that I found. Because has some kind os degrees. I think this kink of methodology can help us to get better without teacher. Because is always the same exercises. But one day I will looking for one teacher for maybe adjust some mistakes.
I stop at 18 minutes
Check out Bryan Kest. He trained under Pattabhi Jois and does Ashtanga based sequences with longer holds to build strength, and classes of various lengths. He's an amazing teacher and it helps to support your Mysore style practice.
@@catherineshaw1122 tks for the recommendation!! I will search that name.
This is perfection at its best!! Best teacher and amazing students. Years of practice.
Wow!. The strength required for this practice boggles my mind.
Iris McKenney don’t you mean the flexibility
@@paulhenrythegreat That too, but the abdominal and arm strength required for Ashtanga yoga capture my attention.
@@paulhenrythegreat no. These people are strong
@@Bayo106 these people spent years doing this practice. When some of them began, they could only do the sun salutes before they had to quit.
Just keep in mind, they spent years practicing this series.

One of my favorite yoga instructors studied with Sri Pattabhi Jois. It’s really wonderful to see abs hear his voice. I really enjoy Ashtanga.

Call me to untangle you
No words for this. This was the first time I did this practice in my life. I am completely new to yoga, I have been practicing only since last december, nothing before. This class was amazing. Of course, I was not able to do all the poses, and I cannot do the fancy, strong transitions. But, best 80 minutes for a long time!
Zsuzsanna Benkó you need supervicion of a instructor. You cant do this alone....
I did it on my own, paid attention to alignment and I am very well self-educated :)
Bendiciones!!
I know of other places that have it all wrong too. I had to walk of a class when we were instructed to do jumping Jack's with rubber bands around our ankles... the "teachers" making it up as they go along. Needless to say... but I'm saying it... I was asked to not come back.
And it's sad very sad that the word yoga is used to describe asanas
@@TheJanakulkarni isn't yoga partly about the asanas?
Watching Sri K. Pattabhi Jois guide us through the Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga is truly awe-inspiring! His dedication, wisdom, and passion for yoga are a shining example for all of us on our journey. Let's remember that progress is a process, and each step on our mat is a step towards growth and self-discovery. Keep breathing, keep flowing, and keep believing in yourself.
I have watched this video in VHS many times. It break my heart that one of them was my teacher and now she is gone. RIP Matt E.
Maty Ezraty, she was remarkable. Can't believe she's gone.

Awesome free Mysore class. Better instructions then going to a studio that does not guide you through the practice. And this is free! Awesome. 👧🏻☕️

I don’t find this video very instructional. Yes, I see them doing the poses but there’s a lot to be broken down about each pose and there’s no explanation about the correct form
This was one of the best yoga i have seen, thanks to my young yoga guru to share this video 👏 Big Namaste to Sr. Pattabhi Jois !
Thank you. I'm enjoying learning from the master himself.
Best yoga video I have ever seen. I am completely fascinated and intrigued. Lucky are those who got to learn from this man. Wish I knew of a teacher like this in modern day LA.

Rightly said yoga can heal serious illnesses if we do it in proper way

Tnx a lot for this video! It's really helpful for beginner primary level practitioners, such as myself, to see exactly how fluid changes in postures are and how they are done more easily.
